I am professor of Conservation and Restoration of Works of Art and Painting, and i have to say, quite honestly, that this videos from Mark Carder are one of the best ( if not the best ), more intuitive and accurate ways of teaching oil painting.
Really a gem of a teacher, very comprehensible videos, extremely well organized methode of painting and one of the best ways of using color to paint, witch is using the primary ones more exhaustively darkening and brightened them with burnt umber and withe. Just like students learn a lot of times in Art School with the Zorn palette ( not exactely like the one used here, but the simplified principle is the same ), but normally is just a palette and then they are teached about others, with a lot more " fabricated" colors with other pigments in their composition that the students tend to be stuck with for years on.
    Great channel, indeed !

I'm NOT a professor just yet, but I can write English correctly, but put that to one side for a moment. OK, the artist paints a picture and sells it. That means the painting goes into an unknown "lighting environment" The lighting could be the same or worse than the artist had when he painted the picture. I paint in a "warm daylight" environment. That means it give's off a little bit of yellow. I've sold lots of my oil paintings and not once has a customer ever complained about the colours not being right. So all your viewers can rest. They don't have to worry if there's a tiny tinge of blue on the chin or nose. The average customer doesn't notice or care.
With regards to the "Flesh Tone" that came in a tube. As I said I'm not a professor yet, but my common sense tells me two things. First the paint company is trying to sell more tubes of paint. They know lots of people have trouble with flesh tones. So they're giving the customer what he wants. The next point is the "Flesh Tone" is a starting point, just like any other tube of paint is a starting point. You buy the tube of paint, and then modify the colour with another colour. Am I statin' the bleedin' obvious ............. Yes I think so
I check my colours, with a piece of paper. I paint the paper with a sample of what I think is the correct colour and then place it right next to my painting. I can see perfectly well if the colour matches or not.

Yes,@@charlestaylor6279 , you are not a professor yet. And you are right "the paint company is trying to sell more tubes of paint" giving the painting students (costumers) what they want while A PROFESSOR WILL GIVE THEM WHAT THEY NEED - to never get in dispair for not having more flesh tone tubes to finish or begins any work, for exemple - TO LEARN AND EVOLVE.

The classical, traditional method is to simplify the many millions of tones into three basic tones. 1.) the color 2.) color in the light and 3.) color in the shadow. All the variants of these are mixed from those basic three. Any hyper-colorants (freckles, red patches, bleached spots, rosy lips - those are all done after the entire head/face/figure is rendered.

marte thompson classical tradition of whom? At least where I come from in our classical tradition that is Greek and later it got connected with the Italian Renaissance.. we used to say a painter is should not be a person that likes gossiping and he should not depict the little moles and freckles or even skin discoloration on his painting. Cause the paintings will stay for the years to come and it's bad to show a skin problem or something about the person in the many later generations that will see it. So we said it should be clean of any bad type of gossiping/judgmental ideas.

Stelios Kapet It’s not about being judgmental, it’s about depicting reality as it is without glamorizing it. Sure, if your intention is to make it as beautiful as you can then you can twist reality a bit to your liking, but keep in mind that not everyone has the same ideals of beauty (many think that freckles are beautiful, for example) and that not everyone has the same intent behind their work.

This and some other YT vids helped my painting skills jump from nothing to something very decent in a matter of 6 months. This video is what gave me my eyes for painting something...another youtuber gave me the process of building the painting. My personal experience with the tools gave me the skills to bring it all together lol.
That moment I realized that the skin wasn't white or black but the reflection color....it's a mental block that has to be removed in order to paint better. We must get out of our assumptions and paint what we actually see!

I took up oil painting as an impromptu hobby to fill up some deficits in my life. I can recall attempting to copy Bob Ross' style and failing miserably, further discouraging any attempts for a few years. Upon finding this channel and the website my understanding of the art has exploded in just a week, and I'm making considerable progress between paintings. I'm talking clear improvements from piece to piece, I've been blowing myself away stroke by stroke. This truly is the method for beginners if you want to learn how to do it the right way.

I've been watching many oil painting vids, this one and others for about 1 month. Yesterday I took 5 hrs on corel painter to draw my first DIGITAL oil painting (1 layer, no special modifications or erasing)
I could not get the colors right for nothing, they were close but I know it was missing some pinks and greys. I gave myself a 5/10 and went to sleep. I woke up and looked at it again, it came out a bit better than I thought for my first painting (ok I know I never painted in my life but I also never digital painted in my life lol) I give it a 6/10.
I am happy to say that all of these skills/advice are transferable to digital painting. I am self taught btw. For my first digital painting, it looks alright but I want it to look more REAL!!! getting the color right. (I know its digital I could probably just use layers to do so but I want it to be as raw as possible. I am not painting to be professional, I am painting to see what solutions I make when I paint.)
corel has a color mixer although i still don't fully understand it lol.

Having painted portraits in Africa for 10 years I learned something from sculptor Dylan Lewis who sculpts incredible wildlife. Lewis studied anatomy for years and is head and shoulders above all animal sculptors because he doesn’t sculpt the skin he sculpts what is underneath it; the viscera. The viscera beneath skin in all humans is in shades of red and pink. This comes through black skin because skin is ultimately translucent. Paying attention to the visceral layer first and then what covers it is IMO essential.

*I'm hoping this is the way to submit questions to your Q&A segments*
Why do some artists prefer to use Cobalt Blue over French Ultramarine (and vice versa)? What are the quintessential differences between those 2 pigments and what makes 1 a better choice than the other?
    Thank you, Mark.

    • @mellamoarts
      @mellamoarts 6 лет назад

I would wager that the artists who prefer cobalt are more advanced painters with specific needs/techniques they've developed through years of experience. French Ultramarine is a darker and warmer blue whereas Cobalt is a cooler/green bias blue. For general use, if you're just beginning or are implementing a limited pallet, I would say go for French Ultramarine as it is better for general color mixing.

    • @psgouros

Ultramarine tends to be more transparent than cobalt. It’s easier to get a clean blue tone with the cobalt.
However, ultramarine and burnt umber are almost perfect complementary colors and the darkest. Together they make a great approximation of black that is more versatile than simple black paint.

Many thanks. Clarity is your gift.
I came across a different color theory yesterday--it's more of a triangle and has cyan, magenta, and yellow, I believe. I tried it with a few bright colors in acrylic though I usually paint in oils. It worked.
Do you know about this at all? If so, what do you make of it? I'm nervous to waste paint but wonder if it would work painting flesh tones.

I've used the CYM Palette for landscapes. I don't know why you couldn't use it for portraits but I haven't tried it yet (transparent yellow by W&N or Rembrandt, Permanent Rose, and thalo blue). I would add the burnt umber.

Photo realistic portraits can be printed from photos nowadays. Camera Obscura vis-à-vis Vermeer would've been better than photos for example.

I'm trying to come up with fresh tones for a painting, where the portrait is a lightly colorized sepia photo .Based on the age of the subject( my Mother, age 24) I'm looking back on photos of her at this age.Needless to say ,it will be a challenge .She is 87 now.

Very debatable. You need a very good photo to paint natural skin tones, otherwise it's very easy to get dirty skin tones just by copying the colours from the photo. For this reason, some system of mixing skin tones is very logical. For the same reason, the artist must be able to interpret the colours that he sees in order to get what will be beautiful and natural.

Thank you so much for sharing your expertise and experience! Through your videos, I have finally found the best approach to work with colour. Either from live, or as I figure out the best approach in planning a colour composition. On that point, have you got any videos where you discuss basic notions of colour theory or colour theory schools of thoughts?

I actually bought one of those "flesh tone " colors and when i tried to use it in a portrait it just did not match any colors i was trying to get. The only thing i could use it for would be to lighten up a color. Anyways im still learning to mix flesh tones so thank you for the help

Would it be easier to start painting with the lightest colour first in order to reference the other colours to it? I have a habit, when painting a person with white skin, to keep their skin as light as possible when in fact it can be alot darker like this video shows. Great video.
