I highly admire the ability to paint realistic portraits knowing that your art may survive you for centuries.
I gives your life a sense that a banker or anyone rich by idly exploiting others cannot have.

I have attended many portrait painting lessons with Johnnie Liliedahl, Linda Coulter in grisaille, and John Gutcher in grisaille, and I feel more comfortable in obtaining a simple desired finished portrait using your technique. It seems that overtime one seems to become a jack of all trades but a master of none in learning so many techniques but finding the one that allows your excel and stay with one method for portraits.

amazing. just amazing! I haven't done a portrait in a long time, but I'm happy to see that you are teaching my style of layering the colors and paint what you see in terms of shapes made with colors , not necessarily painting a face, but it will produce a better face if you just paint what you see.

I was doing a digital painting no layers no undo...(I am learning) Two things I didn't have right... the color... it was off and the eyes....took me 2 hrs to get the basics and 3 hrs to fix it up lol. Great learning experience. When i messed up the eye I was like "damn I kinda suck at this" but its good to see even pros make those mistakes.

A great tutorial. Very talented. I would like to see some more information on the various skin tone mixtures used on the model's skin. Is it all just visual comparisons against the original or just some recognised methodology . Also, any amateur would be panicking and rushing fearing the paint is going to dry out. Is it as simple as a squirt of water ?

Soft edges initially then add harder edges later. I've not heard that before. I'm guessing it's a feature of the medium. As a (would-be) watercolourist, I think the process is very different - less opportunity to adjust.

I would love you to paint a young girl , about seven years old, with blond hair, with lots of highlights... NO dark brown at all. Is that possible? In other words , all my grandchildren are blond, ...And I would love to learn to paint them with your help. I adore your work, your tutorials, your comments and advice. Thanks a lot! I adore you! Just moved near Antwerp and next door there is a fine academie and was exceptionnally authorized to follow the painting lessons right away. No need to tell how happy I am. But since corona shutdown here, NO lessons for five weeks... I could cry non stop. So I decided to invest all my time in mixing during my spare time, correct fleshtones , very smooth with correct tone and value. Thanks for all your help! You mean an awful lot to me!

I wonder how important contrasts are to you between foreground and background.
As in this picture, the girl's hair is a rich brown against a black background this makes it difficult to seperate her off from what is going on behind her, its much less of a problem in a photograph than in painting, also she looks quite made up wearing make-up, which can give the skin a...plastic look, which will come over in a painting as well i'd say
