  • In today's video we will finally be mixing colors! We will begin a 2 part color study. Let me first define what I mean by "color study". What this means is to practice the art of mixing colors to achieve a desired effect. This is not a way to, or path to creating a final painting (or at least it is not meant to be).
That being said, color study will be all about the skin tone mixtures, and tomorrow's will be about the big picture.

Yupari, that was another incredible study, I really like the you lay down your large shapes, with their tonal values, and their placement, related to the planes of the face. I find myself getting into trouble when I attempt to put in the details of the eyes, nose, and mouth, without developing the forms first. Your sharing the details on how you mix your skin values were clear and easy to follow. Thank you, and I will be looking so forward to the next studies. Yupari, I sent you a couple of images of the painting that I am struggling with of my granddaughter on your Instagram account, hoping that you could give me some help, but, I have not heard anything back yet. I understand how busy your schedule is, but hopefully, I will receive a reply. I am a very happy Patreon supporter of your efforts to help us, thank you,
    MSG Leum

Really interesting, never been taught to do a colour study, I also like how you use SG + AC, I never know how to use green in flesh tones. I usually use emerauld green and get a neutral, so I'm definitely going to try your method. Thanks again for an eye opener.

One little idea from me. You could make a small sticker on top to emphasize your lesson agenda.. So that viewers don't thing this is about anything other than strictly color mixing.

Great color study , very helpful seeing your method an approach to the light blending of these plains. Color theory for me is a beautiful science that I'm getting better at , coming from a system of minimal palettes and drafting.
Many thx also for you awesome ability for verbal instruction , and explanation.

Why wouldn't you need to get the hair color massed in, at the same time your doing the skin tones in the face, as I think the face color has to be judged (and maybe adjusted if necessary) against the dark hair, instead of against the light toned canvas you transferred the drawing to?

Your help with these color tips are making my dream of painting a good portrait someday less stressful. Normally mouth & striations of the iris are problem areas. Until now. My son has black hair & his eyelashes are black long & curly. Now look at his picture he is all man. 10 year in the military takes the boy out quick. He finally had a baby so I am painting them. However he looks like a man until the eyelashes. I tried graying out his dark lashes made them shorter made the curl much straighter. No matter what I do he looks like a girl or spider legs. How do you overcome this & keep his best features real? Thanks for any help
