  • Let's think in 3 dimensions today. With this portrait painting we will be pretending that we are sculpting a large block of clay. We will establish the placement of the head with charcoal, and then jump right into paint. Each shape of color will represent a specific angle with respect to the light source. Working from general to specific, our focus is NEVER about COPYING the model. Rather, we INTERPRET visual information and create a painting.

Really fluent and efficient your way of showing how you paint. Actually the way you see the artwork is accesible. I love when you name the colors each time you do one, and how your palette is organised with tones, the basic color you use.The use of the fan brush. it's generous , i am happy to recieve it.

I have never done any portrait painting but having watched Yupari today has inspired me to give it a try. His techniques and explanations for the different shades /tones /highlights etc make it appear to be within my reach and I intend to give it my best shot. Thank you Yupari, you have converted me and I shall watch your future tutorials with avid interest. Tom Ahern.

It is very clear to follow since you paint your portrait like a sculptor. I sculpted before, so I totally get it. When I get more confidant with oil, I will follow your demo to paint the same portrait you painted. Thank you for boosting my confidence. What seems monumental, you made it do-able.😀

Thank you so much for your mentor ship, Yupari. I would like to begin by complimenting you on this portrait. I think that many people feel uncomfortable being photographed as in this, she seems a bit stoic, however, your painting exhibits an expression of that is soft and contemplative, a far better interpretation the subject.
Your ability to teach while you paint gives the student the aid of creating the art form while learning the technique your share verbally. As you know, many artists learn visually so, it’s the best of both.
You also, at times, talk about your personal experience and challenges the encourage your fans to move through the process with less struggle such as freeing your mind from getting too detailed or focused on the end result.
I truly like your style and your pace. I look forward to viewing more of your videos and thank you, thank you from those of us who are quarantined during these sad and anxious times. ❤️

Yupari, really enjoy your portrait demo, esp the build up of the planes using a diff paint mixture for each, and the very detailed work in the eyes. (I've never confused what the pupil is, I think because whenever I go to the eye doctor, he dilates my pupils with drops, so they enlarge in size and he can better see inside my eyes.) The highlights on anything is where the light bounces off the object back at the viewer, so in this portrait with the light striking the model's head from the upper front left, and the eyeball basically being a protruding sphere, the highlight, if visible, would hit the upper left side of each pupil, just below the cast shadow from the eyelid, and there might also be transmitted light through the eye lens, illuminating the iris on the opposite side of the pupil from the highlight, and that transmitted light will help give the eye it's dome round turning of form. Thanks for the vid. Nicely painted!! I thought her forehead was too high and the light too centered but it looks fine.
