- Let's think in 3 dimensions today. With this portrait painting we will be pretending that we are sculpting a large block of clay. We will establish the placement of the head with charcoal, and then jump right into paint. Each shape of color will represent a specific angle with respect to the light source. Working from general to specific, our focus is NEVER about COPYING the model. Rather, we INTERPRET visual information and create a painting.

This is the probably the best alla prima portriat tutorial on RUclips.
Man in terms of clarity of explanation and brushwork you are head and shoulders above the others.
I really appreciate your descriptions as you move throughout the various planes and structures of the face as you paint. So helpful. Thank you.
I love how u explain WHY we do certain things and WHAT IT MEANS when we do these things. it really really helps. my favorite art channel.
I'm binge watching your vids cause I'm working on a portrait and need all the tips I can get. She looks so alive in your painting, like about to move. You have amazing skills Yupari.
You are a fantastic teacher. Thank you so much for this video. How generous of you!!
Thank you for your kind words! I’m so glad that you enjoy my videos 😊
Great video as usual. When I first saw the finished painting I wanted to turn down the saturation and contrast, but then I thought about Rembrandt.
Really fluent and efficient your way of showing how you paint. Actually the way you see the artwork is accesible. I love when you name the colors each time you do one, and how your palette is organised with tones, the basic color you use.The use of the fan brush. it's generous , i am happy to recieve it.
I have never done any portrait painting but having watched Yupari today has inspired me to give it a try. His techniques and explanations for the different shades /tones /highlights etc make it appear to be within my reach and I intend to give it my best shot. Thank you Yupari, you have converted me and I shall watch your future tutorials with avid interest. Tom Ahern.

I’ve watched a tremendous amount of videos of oil painting but this by far is the best video I’ve seen ! It really helped me distinguish important shapes and not think of details as much in the beginning. Thank you so so much
So many thanks for showing your process from the very beginning, along with your (very soothing) commentary. Especially valuable for me was encouragement not to be vigilant about likeness while laying in larger color shapes. Going to get back to it, Thank You for your generosity and teaching skill!
Great video! Absolutely one of your best. Such generosity will surely bring its own reward...respect!
You are literally the best
I did this and it turned out awesome

love your long portrait demos! Just great!
Excellent video! As an amateur artist with no actual art training, my artwork looked good, but I had been struggling with creating the 3d look. Thank you so much for explaining the process step by step. I learned so much just watching this video. Thanks again. Hugs
It's nice to see how you've progressed over the years! Bravo!
Yupari, you are a wonderful teacher. You don't look old enough to be as knowledgable and good an artist as you are. You're very inspirational, and make me want to try painting again. Thank you so much for your videos.
Thank you so much for this valuable lesson; I will paint along with you on my next portrait.
Your method and descriptions provide clear and logical instruction. Thank you!!!
Bravo! Fabulous work and excellent tutorial! Thanks for posting!
Wonderful video & such helpful techniques. Was feeling anxious about how a commissioned portrait was going and you saying not to be disheartened at the early stages of your painting and not to expect it to be perfect yet really helped and encouraged me. Thank you.
Your paintings help me with doing portraits. Thank you so much for the videos!
Amazing how these shapes and planes come together to form the portrait. Check you so much color sharing the process.
great video Yupari!!! beautiful painting as well!!!
I rarely do traditional paintings but I watch videos like this because I want my digital paintings to look traditional lol
Apart from being a very successful artist , you are an excellent instructor. You are so clear in your explanations that it is a treat to learn. I started learning oil painting about a year ago after retiring from the Indian Army. Absolutely wonderful. Thanks.... Colonel Kanwar, India
Fantastic video, very useful and well presented. The eyes construction section was great. Thank you.
Thank you so much for your demo!!!
It is very clear to follow since you paint your portrait like a sculptor. I sculpted before, so I totally get it. When I get more confidant with oil, I will follow your demo to paint the same portrait you painted. Thank you for boosting my confidence. What seems monumental, you made it do-able.😀
Thank you very much for sharing this invaluable teachings...God bless you and give you Peace and Love..!!!!

You have my thanks also. I am painting and drawing alongside your videos. A full frame still of the model would be useful for me to take a screen shot and then make a print of.
The fact that you keep a photo of the model on the screen while painting is essential.
YES, that would truly be so helpful!!
Finally!!! A process video that makes perfect sense. I learned so much from this. Thank you. Subscribed.
Another way you can remember the difference between the iris and the pupil is that an iris is also a flower. They come in different colors like the iris in the eye.
I didn’t know! Thank you for the insights 😊
I really enjoy watching your demonstration and listening to your painting experience.
really enjoy your paintings , was going to give up but after watching and learning has given me the encouragement to continue thank you

Amazing painting! God bless
An excellent, excellent video that I saved to my liked video to watch again. Thank you for the talk through and the whys you did change colors.
That photo and model are beautiful. Thank you so much for this video.
Thank you so much for your mentor ship, Yupari. I would like to begin by complimenting you on this portrait. I think that many people feel uncomfortable being photographed as in this, she seems a bit stoic, however, your painting exhibits an expression of that is soft and contemplative, a far better interpretation the subject.
Your ability to teach while you paint gives the student the aid of creating the art form while learning the technique your share verbally. As you know, many artists learn visually so, it’s the best of both.
You also, at times, talk about your personal experience and challenges the encourage your fans to move through the process with less struggle such as freeing your mind from getting too detailed or focused on the end result.
I truly like your style and your pace. I look forward to viewing more of your videos and thank you, thank you from those of us who are quarantined during these sad and anxious times. ❤️
Yupari it was a real treat to watch and learn from you. Thank you and I am looking forward to more.

Just learning art, so, I am extra grateful for you as a teacher. I lead a meditation for World Peace, based on the premise of the "Prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi . . . ."It is in giving that we receive . . . " May all that your knowledge and generosity that you share here , gives us, come back to you thousandfold. So very many Blessings to you. I just got to stop watching the "Daily Yupari" long enough to actually put PAINT ON A CANVAS!!! Thanks again!!

Nice one, thanks man.
Thank you for this video. This is the tutorial I need right now 😊
best art channel ever!!
This was excellent,,, Thank you.
ps,,, it's amazing how the alizarin permanent is so versatile.
Yupari, really enjoy your portrait demo, esp the build up of the planes using a diff paint mixture for each, and the very detailed work in the eyes. (I've never confused what the pupil is, I think because whenever I go to the eye doctor, he dilates my pupils with drops, so they enlarge in size and he can better see inside my eyes.) The highlights on anything is where the light bounces off the object back at the viewer, so in this portrait with the light striking the model's head from the upper front left, and the eyeball basically being a protruding sphere, the highlight, if visible, would hit the upper left side of each pupil, just below the cast shadow from the eyelid, and there might also be transmitted light through the eye lens, illuminating the iris on the opposite side of the pupil from the highlight, and that transmitted light will help give the eye it's dome round turning of form. Thanks for the vid. Nicely painted!! I thought her forehead was too high and the light too centered but it looks fine.
Awesome!
Really good video. Thanks a lot
Good video, as always, with a very good "intimate" commentary.
Thank you. This is so helpful!!
