  • In this week's portrait painting video let's explore a very affordable color palette. This palette is a modification of the Zorn palette.
    Zorn Palette: Lead White, Cadmium Red, Yellow Ochre, Ivory Black
    Cheapest Palette: Titanium White, Venetian Red, Yellow Ochre, Ivory Black
    Now, the major difference is in the white. With titanium white it only takes a tiny bit to raise the value exponentially. It can be used in place of lead white with appropriate mixing. The venetian red is a dulled down version of cadmium red (in my opinion), but it does create wonderful warm tones.
    If you would like to see more of my artwork, please follow/check out my Instagram page at: / yuparifineart
    If you would like to contact me or commission a painting, here is a link to my website: www.yuparifine...
    The materials used in this video are listed below,
    Canvas: 11x14” Cotton canvas toned with burnt umber oil paint (the tone was allowed to dry over the span of a few weeks prior to this video)
    Oil Paints:
    Winsor & Newton- Titanium White
    Winsor & Newton- Venetian Red
    Gamblin- Yellow Ochre
    Winsor & Newton- Ivory Black
    Mineral Spirits: Mona Lisa brand
    Charcoal: Nitram Fusain Charcoal
    Brushes Used:
    Master's Touch size 6 filbert bristle synthetic mix (the drawing brush)
    Master’s Touch Size 1 Round and 0 Round (the tiny orange brush)
    Princeton Summit 2 Round 6100R (the green one)
    Master's Touch Size 6 Flat Bristle Brush and 4 filbert
    Princeton Catalyst Polytip Bristle Size 4 Filbert

    This is an excellent video for any aspiring portrait artist. I watched it through once to get a feel for it and then played it again as I painted along. I paused it a few times to make sure I was on the right track and my final painting was pretty good. Thoroughly recommended.

    That is all I would ever like to be able to do! Your example here shows you don't have to be getting in there REAL tight...with like a 2 hair brush to get a pretty accurate image to present itself and to be on your way to painting thing NOT only the way one person sees it, but to captivating what nobody could deny is the intended image..good job You! Limited pallet, brushes..yeah!

    Now I know why there are more portrait artists using oil paints than acrylic paints; I am struggling with using acrylic for portraits - probably because of two things: 1) oil paints allow for far longer time to get the details right; 2) I spend about a third of my time keeping the acrylic paint wet (both on the palette and on the canvas)! I am currently using the Artelier unlockable paints (with several types of mediums for acrylic paints).
    Please feel free to prove me wrong about portrait artists using oil vs acrylic paints!
    Great video - thank you for sharing! Your video has just encouraged me to go back to using oil paints.

    This is the palette the Swedish painter Anders Zorn (1860-1920) was known to use, although some substitute a deeper cad red for the Vermillion (cad red light). I've wondered why Zorn didn't go with a dark blue in lieu of ivory black, which would have expanded his range in the greens without too much sacrifice of a dark value like black.

    • @TheLMack
      @TheLMack 5 лет назад

      My guess would be that Zorn wasn't merely trying to use less colors, but to limit the actual range of color. His result is a warm palette and warm paintings. He could have used dark blue, but his goal was probably to limit the cool tones.

    Thank you so much for sharing your painting tips and style and techniques! One thing I've noticed in several of your portraits....when drawing the center line on the head (for the facial features)...shouldn't that center line follow the CURVE of the head? The center line is only flat when the subject is looking straight ahead, with no tilt at all. Just my observation from years of painting portraits.

    • @rusted_ursa
      @rusted_ursa 3 года назад +1

      Sorry for being a year late, but he mentioned that it was vine charcoal. My experience with vine is that it goes on in a very fine layer, making it easier to erase or cover up.
