  • Here is a very interesting oil painting technique I used for years... Grisaille. All it is, is having the underpainting as tones of grey. Let this dry and add multiples of layers of colour to the desired effect. You will be surprised how the finished skin tones are so different to the other technique... straight colour. Loving having the chance to share all that I know with oils with you over the months/years to come.

    Here is a Material list for you: I tend to use a mix of Artist's quality Windsor & Newton and Michael Harding paints. The latter being my favourite choice as he makes them like the old masters did many years ago.
    Please note: if you are just starting out, and price of materials are an issue, I would recommend the Windsor & Newton *Winton series... these have the same quality pigment as the Winsor & Newton Artists series but less of it, there are more fillers and extenders in them but the quality is still there at a smaller cost... just click on any link below and search for them as the cheaper option. The more expensive option below, the benefits are, they last longer as they are super rich in pigment and they are amazing to work with.

    Perfect tutorial of course. I was hoping to find a fast way to simply quickly glaze clear flesh tones over a monochromatic portrait's flesh areas so that I could paint a portrait every few work days as a small business. I can do good likenesses in graphite but want to switch over to oils for the open wet paint time and the color. Is this possible, and if so, thanks for any help.

    Thanks for this nformative video. Question, are you painting with oil directly over graphite? I sketch Bargue plates with graphite and charcoal, and wanted to try applying the atelier technique with oil. I assumed I couldn't paint over a sketch as graphite will show through especially in lighter values. Thanks.

    • @DavePortersArt
      @DavePortersArt  6 месяцев назад +1

      Hi there, thrilled you found the video informative. To answer your question... I draw the outline with a HB graphite pencil, then I ghost this by rubbing over lightly with a Faber Castel Kneadable Eraser. I do know of artists that spray over a loose Charcoal drawing, and then paint over it... so it can be done. Best to try it out to see if that way suits you. all the very best 🙏
