Can't wait to see the video of the platinum one! Can you tell us whether the dimensions - specifically thickness - have changed on the 321 Speedmaster vs the standard 1861 equipped one? Thank you as always for these great videos!
So nice to see such a young head of product development. Watchmaking has a bright future thankfully. He's talking about a time 1941, 49, 57 when he wasn't even born! None of us were. Must be amazing to take forward such legacy. And such a beautiful movement from Omega. Great video Alexander.
Thank you great video. You finally cleared up all the fog confusion and myths surrounding the moon watch movement. After watching this I finally understand to evolution of the movement.
One thing is reading about it, but seeing it, is just a treat for all of us, really enjoy the video can't wait for the one on the steel version, amazing Job Alex, I love how you compartmentalize the history and the story, not even the 500-page book about the moon watch I got is so captivating. cheers
Fantastic video, I really enjoyed and it was great learning the history of this iconic movement and watch! I do have to say, and to no fault of Omega given it's recreating essentially 1940's technology, it's hard to ignore the poor tolerance (by today's contemporary standards) of -1 to 11 seconds a day on a new watch you can buy today. I guess it's same as buying an exact replica of a 1950's car and you learn to love it for all faults and quirks.
I can tell you there are very few manufacturers working at such a level. Omega really pushes the limits and delivers top notch results and quality in everything the brand does. I don’t want to blame competitors, but I’d highly recommend them to wake up... 😉
Such a great story and such a beautiful, iconic watch. I still believe it is the best chronograph design ever. Strangely I prefer the more modern "twisted" lug design over the original, but that bracelet is so cool.
Very insightful and detail history of the Calibre 321. Mechanical beauty is getting rare in this digital and connected world of ours these days. Hope Omega will will recreate more historical movement in the future. Great work Alexander and the team at Watch Advisor.
This was very informative! Thanks for the history lesson on the Omega Speedmaster Professional moonwatch, with Original movement and modern interpretation of today! Truly something to be proud!!
a really cool video with a lot of detailed information for every watch fan about one of the most iconic watches/movements ever. you simply know how to do it, alexander! 👍🏼
The 861 had more parts than the 1861, so the differences aren't only in the copper coating compared to the radium coating, that's for sure. In 861, several levers (dial side) are split with additional screws to attach them rather than single block construction of several levers on the 1861 movement, so I could say the 1861 movement is more rigid than the 861.
Great program Alex, easily one of your best! This is the best presentation I've seen explaining the progression of the Speedmaster movements, it clears up a lot of questions in my mind. Thanks for your work here. I know it's outside of the scope of this program but perhaps in a future show, you could show some details on the latest calibre they're developing for the Speedy. (I believe it's the 3861) Perhaps some of your contacts from Omega could help?
Thank you very much for this wonderful feedback! I am happy, happy... The 3861 - the new Master Chronometer certified 1861 - will be subject of an own video. There is so much to say about that it would not have fitted in this one...
@@WatchAdvisor absolutely. A quick question is there any information about the 50th anniversary of the apollo 13 snoopy speedmaster? When will we be seeing the first glimpse of it & I presume this will have the 321 movement?
Dankeschön Alexander! Excellent video. It was fascinating to learn about the 321 movement and it’s different iterations and how it is applied to the Speedmaster. I look forward to the steel version because of course very few of us could ever afford a Platinum watch. This is superb technology and if I may be so bold, the Speedmaster is the chronograph to own for a true watch collector.
Platinum or steel this is not the question! The Speedmaster is ,as you said, THE chronograph ... no other is loaded with so much history and emotions...
Yesssss you have to!! Omega is pushing the limits and showing what can be done. People like Gregory Kissling and his team are driving forces behind the scene...
WatchAdvisor so my watches before consisted of Casio, breil, citizen...but my first proper watch was the Omega seamaster diver 300 co-axial master chronograph in blue then I got a Longines 1832 moonphase watch for a more elegant look. Now I hope a Moonwatch next.
I love these type of watch related videos. Awesome job! Rolex may be the marketing kind but I argue that Omega is leagues ahead from a technical perspective!
Besides what we have been showing in this video with the lineup of all the iconic Speedmaster calibres and the 1:1 reedition of the Calibre 321, today all Omega's calibres withstand magnetic fields up to at least 15.000 Gauss. All fully assembled, ready to sell Omega watches must pass the Master Chronometer certification independently done my METAS, the Federal Institute of Metrology. If you are curious, please click here to download the entire testing procedure: www.metas.ch/metas/en/home/dok/rechtliches/Zertifizierung_Uhren.html When you now compare Omega to any other brand you have to take this under consideration, since I doubt that any competitor today would pass this tough testing procedure. By the way: the testing by METAS is open to any watch manufacturer ...
Hello, first time subscriber! I just happen to be fortunate enough to own the 1962 Omega Seamaster manual wind chronograph caliber 321. Currently being serviced, waiting with anticipation for it's return.
Welcome on Watchadvisor! who is doing the service? Omega? Your AD? That’s a wonderful chronograph you have! I can imagine waiting to get it back feels like an eternity ...
@@WatchAdvisor I wanted Omega to do it but, I found out they would polish the case and remove the patina. So I went with my local watch repair shop that I have trusted with a few other watches that I have.
To correct my original posting, I was told from the watch repair shop that I actually have a 1961 Omega Seamaster. Only in production for 1 year, awesome!
Fantastic Alexander, great presentation! thank you. Just got back from La Chaux de Fond! I loved it. Drove past Zenith but obviously it was closed on Sunday. Next time 👍
Thank you! Yes, they are always closed on Sunday... And visits are still not possible. They recently told me that they want to start again in August...
Fantastic video! My local AD may have one coming in mid to late August! Only 1,000 will be produced each year, I wonder how many they have produced in 2020 since they closed the factory for awhile due to COVID. Keep up the good work!
I enjoyed this video so much, I loved seeing the comparison between the 1861 and the 1863. I had no idea that there was a polymer delrin brake in the 1861. I would love to see a video with the 3861 included. I’m certain omega are going to update the stainless steel speedmasters with this. Keep up these great videos!
What a great video, thanks for putting this together. I’m really impressed by the many fascinating background details here. I’ve been looking at purchasing a Moonwatch for a long time, but never found a perfect configuration. This has now changed - all boxes ticked. I‘ll need to sell a watch or two, but this one has my name on it, already on the list at my AD :-)
I am happy to read this! Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us... Please let me know if you have any questions. I keep my fingers crossed 🤞🏻 that your Speedmaster will very soon be on your wrist...
@@WatchAdvisor thank you. This may be a silly question, but do you know if Omega sells explosion pictures in high resolution of their movements? I would love to have a framed explosion picture of the 321 on the wall (as the animation in this video).
Alexander another excellent presentation, as usual. :-) It is very educational, I appreciate how your questions bought out more information the Omega Engineer. Both of you are impressive. Now for the important stuff - 1) will it be available in green. 2) how many watches do you own. ( I'm jealous) I'm having an Aussie legion tonight...Bundy and Rum...it's cold and raining.
Great insights! Didn’t know about the accuracy of -1 / +11, which makes sense, but I would have hoped for a better result. And that it takes 2 days for 1 movement to build let the price doesn’t seem to be from the moon anymore... With regard to production capacity it adds up to max. 920 movements for me. 8 employees, 230 work days (considering 25 days of vacation). What would have been interesting: for how long is Omega planning to produce that caliber...?
The accuracy could of course have been improved, but to stay loyal to what it was Omega choose to stick to -1/+11. This entire project is based on the principle to be as authentic as possible. There will be approximately 1000 calibres 321 produced and assembled per year. This makes these two Speedmasters to the cherry on the cake 🍰.
I think the takeaway is that even the regular Speedy is an amazing piece with a great movement. I am glad they introduced a higher Tier for a demanding and monetary equipped minority. Good business done by omega
@@WatchAdvisor yes i did have a speedy professional, loved the manual wind but felt thet watch sat too large on my smaller wrists. I sold it but now am looking to get a first omega in space!
@WatchAdvisor no, no need anymore, I've just purchased a Speedmaster 3861 😁😁😁 what a watch, it's so much more beautiful than in the VDO so sexy. Love your channel
Now I can see how the new cal.321 is quite reasonable. Its a very beautiful chronograph mechanism with a very high level of finishing. New question, how is Breguet's Lemania different from Omega's Lemania. Putting the slight disappoint of Breguet moving their production to Lemania, I really want to know Breguet's chronograph. Btw, after reading few comments, it definitely sounds interesting cause Dornbluth is a very traditional family brand.
It's the same, though some may have higher frequency or more power reserve, otherwise most of them (the architectural or gear count) is the same. Omega used to have the used the lemania movements in their chronograph even until 70s like the Omega speedy automatic chronometer 125th anniversary, which now used in Breguet type XXI/XX if I recall. I think the one that lemania didn't use on the Breguet watch is only the call 5100 (omega 1045 if I recall, forgot the cal no. ) , which now, made by ETA, rebranded as C01 movement for tissot, Mido, and several other low mid brands of swatchgroup.
Great Video, please see also Video of Horological Society of New York with Bernhard Stoeber giving an inside of the work of Albert Piguet (creator of calibre 321) of Lemania in the Vallee de Joux, Switzerland
15:40 Eugene Cernan's NASA-issued 105.003 chronograph (NASA #28) became his lucky charm as he wore it on Gemini IX (June 1966), Apollo 10 (May 1969) and Apollo 17 (December 1972). On Apollo 10 & 17, Cernan always wore this 105.003 on a steel mesh JB Champion bracelet and on the three Apollo 17 lunar EVAs wore it underneath his Apollo A7LB spacesuit, over his left forearm he wore a NASA-issued 105.012-66 (NASA #67) Speedmaster exposed to the dusty & radiation lunar environment of outer space during more than 22 hours ! #MoonwatchUniverse
1:12 on the left quiet large piece of lunar meteorite, probably "Dar-Al-Gani 400" stone-achondrite meteorite ? At such a high retail price, it's probably advisable to get a real 1960s PreMoon caliber 321 Speedmaster like the 105.003 or the 105.012 Moonwatches
This lunar meteorite will play a major role in the video going online very soon about the platinum version of the Speedmaster equipped with the Calibre 321.
İf some how the omega which Buzz wear on the moon will be found. What do you say the auction price will be? İ guess it will triple the paul newman daytona.
I really like Omega as a brand but I am not a real fan of chronographs in general. My all time favourite is definetely the Seamaster Aqua Terra. Still, very interesting insight.
WATCHUNTER BANGLA If you like the Speedmaster, if you are ready to spend the money and if you can buy the chronograph do it. Don’t wait, since time is too precious to be measured with the wrong watch 😉
I really appreciate in depth videos about the movements and their evolution in time. On the other hand I'm disappointed to hear nothing about the 3861 :(. Finally, am I the only only one who finds the 1861 overhyped? Compared to the 7750 architecture, is there even any advantage?
We will later also present the 3861. This would have been too much information for this video... So please stay tuned to discover this calibre later this year. The 1861 is what it is... The hand-wound calibre of the moon watch... The 7750 is an automatic chronograph calibre only. The latter does not mean that it is a less good calibre - in contrary. In my opinion it is by far the best ever manufactured automatic chronograph calibre in such quantities. No other chronograph calibre is as mature and reliable...
@@WatchAdvisor Wow thanks for the reply and looking forward to it :). I think the 3861 will eventually replace all 1861 movements and be part of the new "basic" Speedy generation. It will thus become Omega's new workhorse chronograph movement.
Was this same Lemania movement also used by Patek Philippe ? I think so... Let's put costs aside and forget the economics aspect, what are the timekeeping advantages of the column wheel when compared to the cam ? Isn't the column wheel a more noble horological solution when compared with the cam ? Is Patek Philippe reverting to column wheel or cams for their chronographs ? Are identical moonwatches not available to dis-assemble to be able to copy it ? There will definitely be some differences to reduce the costs as modern industry is always too tempted...
It is impossible to explain you this here with a comment… But maybe you want to watch a video explaining you how a mechanical watch works to start… You will find some here on RUclips …
18.000 A/h or 2,5 Hz was the typical frequency of calibres in the good old times... This has nothing to do with hand-wound or not. Higher oscillating frequencies were introduced for better accuracy and to optimize manufacturing processes...
@@gianpakasa The Tesla analogy is interesting. We could say the watch industry had their high-tech breakthrough back in the 1970s with the introduction of quartz movements - cheap and easy to mass produce, superior levels of accuracy, etc. In the last 20 years you could also just use your phone to get the time. Yet for many people there is still something romantic and fascinating about the old movements - just as a kind of luxury item. Following the car analogy, a mechanical timepiece is maybe like owning a horse? Today riding horses isn't a standard means of travel, it is something done for fun by people with quite a lot of spare money to spare. If you just want to travel from A to B in the most efficient way, everyone (with a few very rare exceptions) will drive a motor vehicle. But still, horses haven't gone away! :-P
I like Omega and the "moon watch" but reason I have never bought one is that the crown is too small and too difficult to wind. Being a Manual-wind" the crown needs to be easily accessible and many people say and do sell their Speedy because of this exact reason... Please Omega, if you stay manual wind, PLEASE make the crown bigger and easier to wind.
Please do also read the description of the video and know, that we will present the two new Speedmaster watches in two separate videos. The new platinum version is to follow in the next days and the steel version in the next weeks... You comments and questions are welcome as always...

@@WatchAdvisor roflmao...never say never my friend. Cheers.
If you ask me it was long overdue... this now is the cherry 🍒 on the cake 🍰 available in two top notch executions...
great review!
Đồng hồ & Phụ kiện Incredible history to be discovered... thanks for your positive feedback...
My personal opinion, the moonwatch 321 will be a big winner for Omega.
It is already a big winner and very much sought after…
Wonderful video!
Thanks 🙏🏻 for the feedback! Allow me to ask you if you are you a Speedmaster owner?
@@WatchAdvisor yes i did have a speedy professional, loved the manual wind but felt thet watch sat too large on my smaller wrists. I sold it but now am looking to get a first omega in space!
Jason M Good idea! Let me know if you have any question...
great vid thanks
I’m happy to read this! Thank you!
Very cool
What impressed you most?
Fantastic and informative video! I am a fan of the Omega moon watch.
For me the Speedmaster THE chronograph! Unparalleled in everything...
Excellent VDO thank you
Thank you very much! Did you also watch our other Omega videos yet?
@WatchAdvisor no, no need anymore, I've just purchased a Speedmaster 3861 😁😁😁 what a watch, it's so much more beautiful than in the VDO so sexy.
Love your channel
@@nss-diver Congratulations! Bravo! Well done! May your Speedmaster always show you happy seconds, minutes and hours 😉
Thumbs up on this one!
Will this video also be part of your Omega library?
Great Video, please see also Video of Horological Society of New York with Bernhard Stoeber giving an inside of the work of Albert Piguet (creator of calibre 321) of Lemania in the Vallee de Joux, Switzerland
here is the link ruclips.net/video/z2uR5AfQrLU/видео.html ... I just watched the video ... GREAT stuff!
Awesome!!!
Thanks for your kind feedback! Don't miss our other Omega ++ videos on our channel...
Thanks for sharing your detailed informations! Very cool!
Nice. Why didn't you talk about the METAS 3861?
Will do a separate video about the 3861 later. There is too much to say...
Great educational vid!
Thank you very much for the positive feedback! Please let me know if you have any questions...
For collectibility, I agree the vintage 321 is a better option. But modern reissues almost always will be better watches for wearing.
İf some how the omega which Buzz wear on the moon will be found. What do you say the auction price will be? İ guess it will triple the paul newman daytona.
I think so! This chronograph is filled with unparalleled history and emotions. Forget the PN Daytona! 😉
Still debating if I should get an 1861 movement hessalite speedy now or wait for the 3861
I know it’s provocative when I write you should get both... the original and the future...
@@WatchAdvisor that works too! Perhaps an 1861 from my birth year
I really like Omega as a brand but I am not a real fan of chronographs in general. My all time favourite is definetely the Seamaster Aqua Terra. Still, very interesting insight.
I am happy to read this. Let me know if you have any questions...
Thanks for detail information. I am waiting for steel 321. Platinum is to much for me. Thank you
Go and reserve one, there are waiting lists anyhow. Only 1000 per year will be made...
WatchAdvisor yes I shall talk to omega dealer in Bangladesh tomorrow.thank you very much.
WATCHUNTER BANGLA Very cool! Let me know what he said...
WatchAdvisor already talked with dealer, they are asking for 13500 usd. Tomorrow I shall go to his place. Any advice? Thanks.
WATCHUNTER BANGLA If you like the Speedmaster, if you are ready to spend the money and if you can buy the chronograph do it. Don’t wait, since time is too precious to be measured with the wrong watch 😉
I am planning to get a speedmaster (chrono) soonish....
Which one? Let me know if you have any questions...
Amazing video Alexander. Maybe ask if the 3861 will be submitted for NASA certification! I really want to know. Best!
He he! Good idea! Would want to see the watch passing all these though tests ...
Absolut cooles Uhrwerk.
The calibres had the same base but they aren’t identical…
Can you please tell me how the movement works ? I really need to know
It is impossible to explain you this here with a comment… But maybe you want to watch a video explaining you how a mechanical watch works to start… You will find some here on RUclips …
Voilà .. 👍👍👍
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Don't care for chronograph since I prefer timing minutes or hours with a divers bezel. But man is that a lovely watch.
One can also time with a bezel of course... At least you use the bezel... many never touch it ... 😉
So, is this 321 a 2.5hz movement?
Is it normal for a manual wind movement be 2.5hz or can be 4hz?
18.000 A/h or 2,5 Hz was the typical frequency of calibres in the good old times... This has nothing to do with hand-wound or not. Higher oscillating frequencies were introduced for better accuracy and to optimize manufacturing processes...
@@WatchAdvisor it's incredible how a brand like Omega goes after a Ford T instead to pursue a futuristic Tesla...
@@gianpakasa I see you have great passion for household appliances!
@@timothywimala681 😂😂😂 is just that I don't like too much focus on vintage stuff
🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂 you are a very funny guy🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I hope you learned something from our video though...
Why no mention of the Caliber 863?
There is no particular reason…
I want a 321 Speedmaster
Which one? Platinum or steel?
WatchAdvisor 🤔 I think the platinum will go well with my 3572.50😂
Wearing the 2021 version now - but wish I can get a copy of 321 ... It is just not available
Congratulations to your “Ed White” Speedmaster! Please share some thoughts about it with us… May it always show you HAPPY seconds, minutes and hours!
I thought the naming system shall name the new movement 1321~
In this case not, since it is a 1:1 clone of the 321 built in the past...
At 16:00 where they show the X-ray. I bet that’s what they use at airports now to stop smugglers.
With a tomography you can in fact see a lot of you wish...
I own a couple of Speedmaster ... I never before heard about this issue and I never experienced the winding the way you describe it... 🤷🏻♂️
In the 321 is not difficult, because crown is bigger and better designed
Aldo guzzi Is this “issue” with the crown a real problem? I never experienced any thing like this with one of my Speedmaster chronographs...
