  • Following the release of a 1957 style Omega Speedmaster at Baselworld this year, I felt it fit to discuss the history of the legendary Speedmasters of the 1950s and 1960s with the calibre 321 - the first of this iconic piece.
Please know that my coverage of Baselworld will be uploaded very soon.

Just car across your channel last week after spending two years watching various you tubers on the subject. You really do put a huge amount of effort into all of the videos I have viewed and each has been superb. Keep up the good work, a new subscriber and one I’ll definitely be telling my friends about. 👍🏻

Don't think I have seen a comparable video describing the testing performed on the watches considered for the moon launch program. Great info and great presentation.

Really good recap on Speedy models. I've always thought the a Speedy should be in a collection, agreeing that a 321 is the only way to go! Having said that I settled for the 57 Broad Arrow reissue, allowing a similar original dial layout in a more modern case. Keep up the good uploads!!!

Mine was given to me as a gift in July of 69 just around the time of the Apollo 11. However, mine is a .861, probably one of the early .861's made in the fall of 68 or early 69. I still wear it. It 's said the .861 is less expensive but a better movement than the .321. Mine has the dot over the 90 marker. Some say only the .321 cal is the true moon watch because Buzz Aldrin wore this model as the first watch worn on the moon. However, it is my understanding that later moon missions used the .861 model when Omega ( OH Meg Ah) improved the movement from the .321. So, Apollo 12, 13 and 15 might have been but not confirmed as .861's issued by NASA on loan to astronauts. They now exist in NASA space museums, only. Buss Aldrin's watch was reported as "lost in the mail" when sent somewhere. Today, somebody has the first watch worn on the moon, and nobody knows where it is. Neil Armstrong, never wore his Speedy on the moon because there was only one EVA, leaving his hanging on the LEM's instrument panel. IMHO

I stand corrected. It appears that all of the lunar Speedmasters had the 321 Movement. The 861 movement came out around October 1968, but NASA had previiously issued the 321 versions to their astronauts by that time. I am advised that later missions after Apollo did use the 861 movement. I don't haven't researched when the first 861 went into outer space. I'm still waiting for the "Omega Museam" to give me ths answer.

Lets get real. Unless you have an original 321, the best Speedy is just the standard version with the hesalite glass.

If you deep pockets, buying the name Omega Moonwalk doesn't hurt. If you are buying technique, in the case of vintage, isn't the Seiko 7016 double chronograph, a clock within a clock, more high class? There's the 7016 Monaco and the 7016 Tank. Looks are subjective, so we leave it just as that. But, it helps to mention that one of these 7016 only cost about 1K.
As for modern chronographs, we have the 415 parts 50 jewels spring-drive Grand Seiko Dragons which cost 5500 for comparison. Does the Omega has this kind of finishing? There's an open glass case for you to view the finishing of the mechanism as well. Open up the Moonwalk and compare. What do you see?
The world of advertising, with the help of the countless instigators, makes everyone poorer.

did you know that the cal 2310 was joint designed and made by lemania and omega when they where merged as SSIH
and then omega made it into the cal321
bet you didnt know that ?

I have never understood the appeal of the speed master. I know it’s just me but it looks overly busy, has useless complications and quite frankly looks cheap. And yes I’ve tried one on. I have tried to like it but obviously I missing something.
