Nice video, What is the song name at the end of this video ?
I don't want the 600 i4 class to die either, I love my zx6r, it's a work of art.
I don't think that it will die. I4 is still the best engine config for the track. But most people don't ride on the track. So it will become less common as parallel twins get the job done better and cheaper (better profit margins because of cost savings on simpler engine and mounting) for the average rider who commutes but like to joy-ride occasionally.
600cc inline 4 kinda suck on the street that's why they're dying. They're completely gutless and the top-end power is not enough to suit the cravings of highway hoons. They really shine only on the track but most people don't ride their Supersports on the track. If you ask me there is no reason to buy r6 over r1 if you want a race replica bike and you're going to ride mainly on the street r1 is much more versatile.
Being that my R6 is my first bike it would make no sense to buy an R1 in my case as of now though these bikes are gonna be around for a while i can always find a newer used R1 or R6
Unfortunately it seems the 600 class is dying most manufacturers have already stopped making them. There’s the cbr650r but I bet that’s going to be on the chopping block as well. Aprilia has shown that people want a parallel twin with decent horsepower. Hell you can’t even find one they are all sold out.
@@ryanoliver9131
The engine has nothing to do with it but how usable the power is in everyday scenario while still having good and capable chassis.
People want middle weight versatile sport and not gutless and too track focused one like r6 which is overpriced for what it offers.
That's exactly the void that cbr650r and rs660 fills.
Cbr650r selling extremely well in europe that why they made euro5 compliant so it won't go away anytime soon.
The pros with 270 degree parallel twin that it's relatively cheap to make compared to inline 4 and it got nice character with v2 sound and v2 like power delivery.
30 horsepower short of excitement. Hopefully a triple engined R9 will come.
It's coming
If you can't jump on a 300cc with 40hp and feel "excitement" then you probably aren't a TRUE motorcycle enthusiast. You don't LOVE to ride.
@@twistn-grips It depends on the size of your body. I’m sure I would have lots of fun on a 300cc bike if I was 5’7” and 160 pounds. And in reference to the R7, it should have close to 100 horsepower to better compete with the Aprilia 660RS, Honda CBR 650 and the like.
@@Doncan0823 Agreed, therefor a mt-09 engine instead of mt-07 engine makes much more sense, also sounds alot better :)
@@Doncan0823 5’7 160? That’s fat boy build
It had to be said. When l hear R7 the first thing I think of is early 2000 world super bike, Noriyuki Haga, and that R7 smoking the tire out of the corner.
Personally i wouldn't know about the original R7 if it wasn't for you, but since you introduced me to the original R7 and after i saw how significant its existence is, i realized it's a bad idea from Yamaha to call this new bike R7, i totally agree with you
wrong it's totally a great idea.
When I think of the R7 I think of Noriyuki Haga tearing up the Assen track. It's a legacy that this bike definitely disrespects. Shame on Yamaha. It shudda been called the MT-07F (F for fairing). 72 hp?!?! what a joke🙄
The problem with you is you don't consider those new emission norms because of which it's near to impossible to make such a powerful middle weight bikes. They didn't had back when original R7 launch. So why people still blaming Yamaha for new R7 for not having gret power? That's doesn't make any sense at all. TBH whole automobile world is going to get electric in few years so don't even feel sad that you don't have this petrol engine bikes in future. Weather you like it or not this emissions norms will get more and more strict and eventually all automobile secter will turn to EVs.
I think it's a hard naming this one like, mt07R ? or even FZR-7 ?
I'm not a speed freak, I love the low end torque aspect and I think it looks amazing. Trying to find a dealership near by to preorder my own R7.
Honestly I think the new R7 is a great bike for what it is and definitely one of my go to sport bikes
But I understand why the R7 name is meant for something special and rare still it has amazing value for performance
For someone who wants supersport more than anything but can't afford liter bikes 600s are a blessing. I hope other brands don't stop selling them
600s are fantastic. My first (and current) streetbike is an '04 FZ6. I've always loved 4-cylinders, and the 600 class is the only reason I could afford one (as I'm only 20).
Other brands will stop selling them thanks to emissions. ;-(
I think Kawasaki is discontinuing the zx6r and I believe Honda is stopping the cbr 600 as well. It’s a shame because I would’ve loved to have one.
bro a 600 is almost aas expensive as a 1000
@@Daniel-dj7fh that's true, at least in the new market. Used, 1000s seem to hold value more (even though 600s are also still pricy)
I'm with you on that hill. Not a fan of it being called the R7. Could've called it the RS7 or anything else. I have a Triumph Daytona 675R and it does seem like the 600cc class is dying. Hopefully the expected success of the Aprilia RS 660 will bring manufacturers back to making middle weight sportbikes that are fun again.
they could have called it MT07-R or something like that...
@@szymon7423 I agree to call it the r7 is like saying the supra is the best car it's stupid.
Calling it the rs7 is like calling it the ninja 700. Also the r series isn’t 600 class motorcycles since the r1 and the r3 are there. The r3 is a lot slower than this r7. This is the same reason they should not call it the mt 07r because the mt series is naked and r is fully fared. And guess what bikes fully faired.. the r7.
RS7 woulda been a good name ... a la the old RS6 models...
@@szymon7423 yeah i don't care what people say it's not R7 there is no such thing as a modern R7 it's a MT-07R with fake R7 badges from factory
I don’t care what Yamaha calls it. I am more bugged that they’re trying to pass it off as a R6 upgrade which it’s not. I feel like the looks alone are fine but when you set this bike up to an R6/R1 it looks like the less attractive sister.
"I don’t care what Yamaha calls it. I am more bugged that they’re trying to pass it off as a R6 upgrade which it’s not." Exactly, that's why it is a misnomer. They could have called it R7E for entry level 700cc sportbike.
Aren’t they just doing what they didn’t to the fz6 and Fz-07 (now MT-07) they comply different models but equivalent to the R6 vs R7
No one is trying "pass it off as an upgrade to anything". In fact, Yamaha does not intend this to have anything at all to do with the R6.
@@yuriabmxr what does the R in R7 stand for?
@@JohnShaw26.2 same thing as it does with the R3 and R1, and formerly the R6. It is intended to be capable on track as well as the street... in its class, which in this case has nothing to do with 600 SS. It is a lightweight twin and a track capable sport bike.
I 💯 agree. The name R7 should prolly be a high revving inline 4. Being a faired version of the mt07, its not worthy of the name the YZF R7. I was actually thinking the same first time I heard the name. I thought it was gonna be a whole new level above the R6. But just an mt07 with clothes on.
But the mt07 rocks, especially on the street. I like it way more than my r6 on the street and in the canyons. R6 is just too much when revved out, and not enough when putting around
Thats why it isnt an „YZF R7“ its just a R7
@@IntoTheMystery13 it only bothers us peeps who dont think super sports are fast enough. My r6 is a toy compared to my r1 so finding out they are axing the r6 for a slower bike is poo poo to me.
I thought the r7 was gonna be some balls out stuff but jeez ... thank goodness I watched this vid. So sad they getting rid of the 6 for this thing. My first bike was an 07 r6 i tried other bikes but nutting like a super sport.
It's not a yzf , just called a r7
Totally agree, great video. yeah there is no problem with the bike but I still think they should have more respect on the previous old Yamaha r7
they should have just called it what it is. MT-07R. that is probably the biggest failure of the bike. because if they just had called it MT-07R and put som cool flashy text describing it as a sporty leaning full fairing MT-07 then both sides would be happy. the loser pussys who whan't to looke like sport riders get to have a cool bike and the real sport bikers can respect it because it's not claiming to be somthing it ain't. using the R7 name was 100% done for marketing reasons but i belive MT-07R would have ben better marketing. youtube vloggers will make sure everyone knows what yamaha ment the MT-07R to be so it ain't like people will not know what type of bike it is.
I'm waiting for the first fz09 engine swap into it 😜
haha, that would be funny. Probably make more sense to just put track fairings and clip-ons on an MT09 though.
@@HeroRR nah the mt09 chassis is garbage for serious cornering.
I'm so down for an R9 triple built by Yamaha. That'd be so cool.
@@kaihartmann924 I believe they are doing an R9, it would only make sense
@@mazdaahh maybe ? That would be a direct competitor to the ducatis.
I'm more a "New Gen" Rider, and I've been dreaming about this R7 for long now. The MT/FZ 07 engine is a ton of fun, and supersport chassis and riding position is the best way to enjoy a fun engine. Perfect match for me. (I can still hear that a 115HP 600cc engine is more race efficient, but hey, no one here is a pro rider, so fun is the main thing.)
The 600 class is already dead here (Europe). There’s only the zx6 left. Although you can buy an r6 for the track.
It’s a shame!
The zx6r is no longer being produced, you can only get you hands on 2020 models in some country's.
And it's such a shame I'm looking for a new bike and the only decent options are the MT-09 and Z900 why can't they just give us a faired model of those bikes.
well the sport tourers in the 600 segment is quite popular
@@ivanscicluna2988 I feel the same about Triumph's Street Triple. Daytona seems to be dead so why don't they just put a fairing into one of their naked bikes? Seems reasonable for me, they don't even need to tweak anything, just a fresh new Daytona fairing.
@@SHIIFUTO was just wondering the same thing, why don't manufacturer's just give us the same bike with fairings, Yamaha might start doing this with their bikes same as KTM 3 engines to suit all their different bikes.
I recently bought a 2010 R6 (here in Germany), their prices are starting to go up, and even the super high mileage examples are going for minimum 6,000 Euros, which is pretty insane. They're going to become harder to find as people try to snag them ... The R6 is almost a cult supersport at this point.
Literally have the exact same gripes with this bike as you do, even thought of the alternative “MT07-R” title that you suggested, much preferred.
I agree. They destroyed the legacy of an iconic name for no good reason.
Oof snowflake❄
they made this bike for compete in other countries like India against ktm, kawasaki, suzuki. they dont sell all the bikes they have they will sell the bike which is made according to the choice and roads of the country so they sell the slower ones.
Your ignorance is unsettling.. Search “Twin Cup” noob and learn something
I probably would have gone with Yamaha R5 as the name. My biggest issue isn't the name but the power. This bike is supposed to compete with the RS660 but it is way down on power. IMO Yamaha should have pushed about 90 to 95 hp out of the CP2 for this application. For my money I'd still have the CBR650R.
That is the comment I have been hearing. It makes sense when you have the R3/MT03, R1/MT10, but just because there is an MT-07 doesn't mean R7 makes sense when re-using a previous model name. R3-R6-R1 was a good progression, but the new R7 to R1 is a huge jump. One could argue the R1 is just insane and not many can actually extract all it has to offer, but there is a huge gap between the R7 and R1 now. With the demise of the 600 SuperSports I feel like a higher power middle bike is needed to bridge the gap.
This is going to be a perfect second bike for myself.
Your 100% rigth. Tried the mt07 and its a blast to ride🥵
I went from an r3 to an xsr900. This bike is bullshit
That’s what I was thinking too. This is a much more comfortable transition from an r3 to this.
I was thinking the same
@@MrFurley69 holy shit that must be nuts
Spot on, this should be a MT07R for sure. I owned a FZ6R for a first bike and it was a great starter, this at least on paper is leading more towards that then the RS660. I think they missed the mark the most on riding position. The RS660 has so much more of a streetable riding position and that alone is worth the extra money. I was really hyped for the R7 but yeah my balloon has lost some air so far. I also highly agree, it needed a inline 4 to be a true R7. Even the FZ6R has a inline 4 and sounded amazing actually. It was massively overweight and quite a bit underwhelming on the torque and power front but was very comfy on long rides even in traffic. The R7, I wouldn't want to be caught in any traffic on. Now the 660 class from Aprilia offers a lot more in tech, hp/tq and comfort for $3k more, I still think that's the better buy.
My problem with the new R6 replacement is that it doesn't use the triple engine from the FZ-09. That would have been fantastic, and I would have bought one without a second thought.
I'm probably still going to buy one of the new R7s, but I would really, really love a supersport with Yamaha's triple.
That would be amazing lol
All of the obstacles would be overcome in the 600 sport-bike segment if the sales were there; but they're not; it's a dying segment, so this makes a lotta sense from Yamaha, and I believe you're right: we'll see more of this sort of thing in the future.
Guys breaking news Yamaha saw this video and has renamed this the Yamaha Mustang.
Some great points made in the vid
When I first heard about this, I was bothered by the name too. Especially since I have a huge admiration for old 750s.
You are exactly right. I've owned a CBR250, VFR400, ZX6R and now GSXR750. They've all been amazing bikes. 250, 400, 750 all gone now. 600's are being phased out now as well? ARGH! What are they thinking? There's no way i would go back to riding a 700-twin after the GSXR as it is an amazing bike. I feel sorry for the young guys coming through that they don't get to experience the high-reving inline-4s.
Just waiting for someone to bring back the 4 cylinder 400..
lol you'll be waiting for a very long time unfortunately...
No doubt that’s would be awesome!!
Kawasaki announced the zx4r. Inline 4 400 cc
Honda CB 400SF.....VTEC yo.
I agree you to a point. The original R7 had one purpose only. That was to win races. The new one isn’t designed with that in mind. The death of the 600 class has many reasons. The new R7 has more “real world” street, everyday use-abilities. As you don’t spend your time in the upper limits of the RPM range. For me just having the fully adjustable suspension with forks upside down is a huge bonus. That the Ninja 650 and CBR650R don’t. Which is basically where this is aimed at. The RS660 is really in a league of its own (even tho on paper it’s in the same “class”). 👍😎🇦🇺
I think Yamaha should, depending on how the R7 does in sales, enhance the CP2 and tune it for a better performing engine for the 2023 model. It would fix the bad blood for disrespecting the R family name.
Dont be sad guys yamaha gaved us a cheap maintanance bike with eco saving gas bike and high cc 700cc stop comparing for me its perfect on its own
I agree, they shouldn't have named it R7. MT7-R would have made more sense.
No r7 is better because mt is naked bikes r is fully faired so if you do that the r1 has to be called mt-10r the r3 has to be called mt-03 r which is retarded
@@Sss12698 for it to deserve the R7 name it should outperform the last R7 before it.
@@uptownsamcv no, it shouldn't. That's not how marketing works. 😂
@@Sss12698 so call it the MT sport. Or XJ-R7. It's not an R7.
@@uptownsamcv bruh it’s a name quit comparing it to shit. Also no it doesn’t like tf
I watched your video on the original R7. Thanks to you I know now that it never won anything as far as on a moto Grand Prix racing level so this could be the reason why Yamaha needed to do a revamp of the R7 and keep its brand more alive than ever especially after announcing the death of the R6. There’s a marketing strategy guru behind this lol . Also I’m cool with the name it doesn’t bother me that much but I get your point with the legacy of the true R7. It looks nice and I will test one in 2022.
The ONLY exception I see for the R7 and the ONLY redeemable quality to make it justify as a real successor to the YZF R7 is if it has devastating performance inspite of a twin motor.
You know, I kinda miss the 4-cylinder 750 market segment from the past...that sweet spot between the user-friendliness (sort of) from the 600's without the overkill power of the 1000's...was the best of both worlds IMO.
Sure, the 700-cc bikes of today are great and can be much better at daily use than the older models, with more low-end torque from their parallel twins, but... **sighs**
I wish Kawasaki could make the Ninja ZX-7R again, with the dual round headlights...and a 4-cylinder!
Suzuki still making the GSX-750R, good.
Honda had the CBR750 Hurricane/Super Aero back in the 80's, so it would be cool if they brought back both the displacement and nameplates.
Should I get a SUZ GSXR75?
The few bikes I owned were all inline 4 motors. I'd feel weird riding this. That sound doesn't do it for me. I also think it will be overpriced, and having in mind there are a lot great deals on bikes using inline 4s out there (such as the new Suzuki GSX-S1000, Kawasaki Z900, etc.
Videos of mt07s with full exhausts dont do it justice(obviously) but honestly i think they sound better than small i4s
I totally agree with you. I started sharing the R7 with a huge Yamaha fan on announcement. It wasn't till I heard sound clips that I thought it sounded weird. I was hoping they crossplane a 700 cc hike like the R1 and my initial impression was incorrect. Sadly it was spot on as I recognized the parallel twin sound.
I was gonna call you out on supporting the CBR250RR but you called yourself out on it haha. I'm not sure what else they could have called it though, it slots above the r3 and if that's worthy of the yzf-r name, then this is too. And I'd picture this as more of a competitor to the ninja 650 than the rs660
I wanted a cbr650r type of bike. Arpund a hundred hp and inline 4
I completely agree with you. I owned a mt07 for a year, it’s a fun bike until 2-3 months in or until you ride inline 4 and realize how slow the mt07 is.
The MT07 has a nice bit of shove low down and it is quite fun to ride that torque .. but it runs out of steam a bit quick. I had mine from new for 14 months then traded it in against a 790 Duke, with 100bhp on tap and almost 40% more torque than the 07 it's way more fun to ride .. even more low down shove and still has some to give towards the top end too. Still not the high end rush of a decent 4c sports bike but a nicer and more useable balance between torque and bhp.
@@MotoGoato that’s awesome, I’ve always wanted to ride a 790 duke.

@@TheFunesk the rs660 is not a good bike, it's a cash grabbing poser bike, nothing more... kawasaki has been offering great low end bikes for years and the offered them along side higher end bikes with compromising quality, reliability or price.. here comes a bunch of superbike posers with cute lipstick on their pigs defending the poser section... bah.. a low power bike is just a commuter bike, a low power bike with poser credentials is nothing but a fairing smash cash grab..

I hope we get rs660 and this r7 in future, maybe...
And also 300 singles here are priced at what you guys would pay for 650 twins.
So its bascially a mt07 with fairings?
I wasn't paying attention when this came out. Then I saw the video, showing a parallel twin and my jaw dropped. Think the 600 class if failing by going the 2cyl route, I love low end torque but a Sport bike should have at least 100hp. 3cyl is where the 600 class should have gone. The Daytona and current Street Triple 675 are amazing machines. A sleeved MT09 engine would be perfect.

Even though the R7 name has historical significance, it makes a ton of sense for Yamaha to use it as they transition their sport line to something like an R3, R7, R9 and R1 orientation. Many riders who are looking at the new R7 will be too young to recall the original, thus their market will not be put off by this mild infringement - it's likely they wont even be aware of it. Yamaha is smart enough to realize this. Personally, I still appreciate Yamaha historically, and like the direction they're taking things.

It happens everywhere even with cars, the new Supra is not a “Supra”, Mitsubishi eclipse is now a crossover. And the most recent I’ve heard of is the new Ford F-150 Lighting. It’s sad to see and hear about, I really hate it. But for Yamaha honestly I think it just makes since with the whole MT line up. I wouldn’t be surprised to see an R9 with the mt09 triple
Alright the supra was a bad example... just cause they didn’t give you a 2JZ I6... doesn’t mean you didn’t get an I6 at all.
Yes, it’s on a BMW chassis but once again doesn’t mean it won’t make quick work of a stock 2JZ supra.
@@Texarmageddon one look at the guys profile picture should have given you a clue why he hating on the new supra.
Without the usage of the BMW platform, Toyota won't even consider building a new supra due to the economics of it.
@@Texarmageddon i suppose your right, and what i said was a bit off topic. I meant it in the sence of the name and the hype around the mk4. then we hear we were getting a new supra with the help from BMW, it breaks JDM bois hearts. non the less not a bad car at all. just not what any of us were expecting from toyota.
So it's basically a supersport shaped bike with an mt07 engine
The design team who thought of putting an underpowered twin into a sporty Yamaha and name it an "R7" should be put in front of a firing squad.
Simply It's a twins cup bike ! And Yamaha did a damn good job with it! In fact just took the Moto America twins cup championship away from Aprilia!
how does this compare to a honda cbr650r?
MT07r fairing version is definitely more fitting for this bike. What i don't agree with is this bike will be fun on the track, if i understood correctly its less high end more low end torque, so will be better for street riding
I find it hard to believe that they built this to compete against the RS660 given how it has around 25hp less. I don't think this will be as competitive as most think. In reality, this bike looks like it was a lazy, overly cautious design route. I have an XSR700 and was interested in buying this right up until they said it keeps the same powerplant as the one I already have. I was expecting them to upgrade the motor, in the very least to 95hp to become competitive.
I agree about the naming issue 100%. Though the more I think about it, if that's my only complaint about it, then that's not so bad. Thanks for the video! It put my feelings into words.
The R7 is not a hallowed name, it was just a convenient moniker for the homologation process. That bike's real name is the 0W02.
That’s true
You echoed every one of my gripes with this bike. When I heard that they were bringing out an R7 I thought it would be on the same level as the GSX-R750 and as someone who's owns a 2008 R6 still, I was so excited. Oh the disappointment I felt.
I'm just annoyed that Yamaha just used a parts bin engine and didn't do anything to make it more racy. They could've easily put a more agressive head/cam setup in it with higher compression and at least gotten the HP to high 80's/low-90's. A good chassis with firm inverted forks and a decent rear shock with 73 crank HP is going to feel pretty slow IMO. Why would you buy this when for $2,000 more you could have an RS660 with almost 30 more HP? What's an extra 2k spread out over 5 years anyway, an extra $30 a month? I'm sure it will be a solid bike but as HeroRR said it's kind of a letdown for the R nameplate....
I panic bought the last R6 the dealership had two days ago. Didn't want this bike to be my next
You did the right thing! Take good care of it, there are no more left.
Wish I could get my hands on the last few Zx6rs or R6 🥲
@@ivanscicluna2988 I’ll be riding this with you in mind brother.
Good choice! I would too if I have the money. Cant beat the 600.
Couldn’t agree more. I just think they should’ve made it more of a competitor to the rs660 than they did. They seemed to miss some things that would stand out like a stock up and down quick shifter and a basic traction control system. I noticed a ABS light but looked into it and didn’t see if it was lean sensitive or not. If yamaha would’ve done that then it would’ve been a much better competitor and even if it was $1000-$1500 more as optional features I think it’s absolutely necessary especially since this bike is going to be an option to lots of new riders with a small background with dirt bikes and mopeds looking to get into street bikes. They also should’ve tweaked the motor to rev a little longer which can be fixed with a tune but the torque is going to be great. At the end of the day yamaha always comes out with something kinda cool then makes it a very special unique bike within a few years after consumers complain about certain things. I’m curious how the vibration will be on this bike since it’s definitely going to be different than a inline four. Fingers crossed for a “r9”
People are confusing the r7 thinking it’s like a Gsxr 750 and that would have been great if that was the case but it so isn’t and I’m happy that you made this video clearing that up. It’s a shame that they didn’t jump into that class I think it would be great to have other constructors in that class especially Honda and Yamaha. Even tho I’m Gixxer fan when it comes to riding on the street I think it would be great to bring back a 750 class to the track
100% agree. i thought the exact same when i heard it wasnt a 4cyl and just a r version mt07 great vid doood
HeroRR, try to get your hands on one to test ride! I would love to hear from your point of view. I’m not sure if this would ever be a future bike bc it’s not an inline but it would help to know how it rides
You're right it should be mt-r7 . Also would love to see the mt09 motor in a racy chassis they just need to reshape the motor some.
an r9 would be really good ngl
Would love to try one out as well. I've ridden an r6 for years. Would be interested to see how the low end power and torque feel on the R7. Prefer my 954rr for more power and torque everywhere in the RPM range though.
Bike names are usually indicative of their displacement. The only thing that I find curious is why they didn’t bore out the cylinders just a hair to go the full 700cc
Yamaha makes their money on economies of sale on the same engine used over and over. Why waste profit margin redesigning engine when it's already ready to go? That is their strategy and why they use the same engine in so many bikes (Also see MT-09, Tracer 900, Tracer 900 GT, XSR 900).
I agree. The R7 should have an inline 4. Makes the FZ6R more wanted now I bet.
Perfect out the box for a beginner track rider.
Light, nimble and will be able to boss it around on the track.
I totally agree. They should call it R-07, maybe. I was also a bit disappointed that the R6 was available as a racebike only.
Kawasaki does this all of the time, and as ex ninja ower (ZX-10R), it is a major gripe of mine to see the ninja name slapped on every sports-oriented model they produce.
What's wrong with kawasaki? Their naming scheme is pretty straight forward.
Track / super sport : ZX
Street sport : Ninja
Atleast the numbering scheme they use actually reflects how powerful the bike is.
@@ivanscicluna2988 The ninja name used to mean something..
I fully agree, R7 is a bad naming choice. When I heard about the R7 I had hoped to see an 160 bhp 750 inline four with ABS and traction control. But what they did from my perspective is a successor for my old 1999-2002 SV650S AV, almost same size engine, parallel twin with a V2 characteristics and almost the same power figures, which makes it a good beginner's track bike. Bit still a bad naming choice, as if Kawasaki had named their Ninja 650 a ZX7-R.
Great video! This sums up the gut reaction I had to the news of the new R7 as well. Its a great street bike and looks really cool but it feels wrong to do this to a legendary namesake. Also a bit disappointed with this being the replacement of the R6. Spot on example with the Honda 250 RR versus the single R. We all got so hyped for a mini 250 inline 4 again. At least Kawi has given it a go but sadly not brought it here with the zx25r!
The problem with the name is what else could they have possibly called it?
I moreso wish the seating position was akin to an sv650s, i think thats the best mix for a novice track bike because its still decently ok for everyday riding.
The mt07 dominates the 650cc supertwin class, now you have a race ready bike for fun track days. They might have fudged the name but props to yamaha on trying something new.
How would you actually go about installing racing fairings on an mt07? Are there some kits you can buy, or do you buy a set of fairings from a different bike, trim, hammer, bolt down and get it done that way? Asking for a friend 😉
The engine is not for me!!
Even thought i had a 1984 750 interceptor with 74hp at rear (25 yrs ago) - it was fine?
Maybe because it was a V4 - not a ll Twin?
A friendly bike good for daily use on major city with traffic problems
Just to give my little input on this bike. I think they did a pretty good job on the styling, it looks very similar to the R6 but it's thinner and potentially more forgiving to someone who is just getting into trackdays and wants something a little more tame. The MSRP isn't that bad either and i don't really have much to complain about it as im warming up to this new bike they're giving us. BUT.. I do agree with your opinion about Yamaha using the R7 badge so carelessly. At first when i found out about the new R7 i thought it would be something like the GSXR 750 and that pumped me up; in addition i remembered of the old super rare R7 and i though that this new bike would be the perfect comeback of that and when i found out that it was just a twin i was super dissapointed. This is quite nitpicky on our part as enthusiasts so i think we need to give it some time to shine and give it a chance. Overall, i would love to take the new R7 on some twisties and rip on it a little.
I'm not annoyed that they called it the r7, I understand their reasoning, I do share your thought on it though. I think the r series should be kept to the razor sharp track focused bikes. Unfortunately the only sport touring line Yamaha has is the tracer and FJR neither of which this bike would fit under. I'm kind of chalking this up as a sport tourer since it doesn't have the outright power of a "true" sportbike and I don't really expect it to be quite as track focused, which I may be wrong on. Time will tell though and I look forward to it regardless of the name. Any bike can be any type of bike if you're willing enough
cool bike but I wish it had an almost upright seating position. like an Mto7 with fairings and wind protection. I agree its a nice engine, but it can't compare the the R6, the r6 engine is so sweet in the high end. I test road one and I couldn't believe how great that top end was.
lets be happy we have another bike to choose for ,the only issue that i see is that the price is too close to the cbr650 and the for 1k more you you can get a zx6rr no abs .
Seems priced decently, but I think the new Trident 660 appears to be better value for money (although is obviously in a different style class)
I remember seeing the original R7 on track the year it came out. It was a real treat. I have no problem with Yamaha calling this new bike the R7. I see it more as a nod of respect to the old machine. I can't really see how Yamaha would ,or should use the "R7" name otherwise. Make something like the GSX-R 750? Hm. R9 next?
"because it has fewer cylinders it makes less peak horsepower" is nuthin but ABSOLUTELY BS! Start read up some combustion engine basics..
I totally agree. My very first thought when the bike was confirmed to only have the same MT07 parallel twin. Heralded nameplates should be respected. They shouldn’t t call this the R7. It’s worse than when Mitsubishi but the Eclipse name on a crossover or Ford with the electric mustang SUV thingy.
I really like the idea of this bike. Honestly what I'd like most is a Ninja 636 - put a 636 engine with 650 ergos. I don't see why high revs and comfort have to be separate. But the R7 is at least a decent compromise; it can be made to sound phenomenal.
Actually, if we're talking wish list, I want a 2-stroke. Bring back the RZ. I'd camp out in front of the dealership and lick every RZ they unload off the truck.
Hey what are your thoughts on an ABS motorcycle? I really wanted a CBR but they don’t have any ABS in my area. I’m nervous that if I have an emergency and have to grab the break I’m gonna slide into the car what are your thoughts on this? I don’t want to emergency brake and slide. Any thoughts?
The engine is a bit of a disappoint me for me. I would have liked the CP3 engine from the MT-09 in this platform, I want to stay within the Yamaha family cause I love their bikes but I'm ready for a new bike and I didn't want to jump all the way to a 1000cc bike after just riding the R3 for 3 years. So I guess I'll just look at a used 899 Ducati or something cause it's still a middle weight bike while still having the looks and good features while not being totally overkill for the road. I love the R1 but I just feel like I ain't ready for something like that yet haha. Was really hoping for the R7 to be the bike that'll bridge me to a R1 one day. Love the video dood, I'm subbin'!
Also, I feel you on the 600cc era and it worries me too. My dad had a 04 600RR and he loved that thing to bits, would hate to see the 600's go out too. :/
What I don't get about the emissions thing is it's making a displacement crawl up in size which also can't be good?
this is thw exact bike that ive been waiting for. not intense like the r6. good DD.
a MT07 with fairings.
i love the twin sound and am generally optimistic regarding its performance etc.
The name is aCtUaLlY not the same, the legendary r7 was called yzf-r7, while the new one is just called r7, but you point still stands. I personally never new about the old r7 until the announcement of this bike, so only yamaha fans will know that. The people for whom the new r7 is made won't buy it for the name, because they don't know about the old one
R7 SP can happen down the line if they decide to anyways they named it in honour of the legendary R7. Definitely like the R styling looks and am considering getting one, I have an MT-07 which I have had since 2016.
Got to agree with you on the annoying use of the R7 name.
Triumph did it with new Trident pretty much is a cheap Street Triple.
A lot of these companies are trying to use old names to help boost sales.
I understand the R7 name should be reserved for YZF-R7 750cc inline 4, but company gotta make sales at some point (and show its worth to the investors...). We may eventually see Hayabusa name on 650 parallel twin! hope not!
I'm a ninja zx6r owner and you mentioned that 600cc motorcycles are slowly dying due to emissions, sales, etc. Hopefully it will not happen
I agree with you HERORR . They need to be creative and stop playing with our emotions
