- Desmond Doom shows you how to play like Peter Hook (Joy Division, New Order, Peter Hook And The Light) in 1 minute!
Huge love and respect to @PeterHookAndTheLight I've loved your music since I was a lad.
Go buy his music and learn every song to become a bass beast!
Interesting!
Thanks for the music Mr Hook! Huge influence on my bass playing
The main man himself!
I love you master Hook
You are a legend, Mr. Hook, massive fan here!
we love you Hooky!!
Peter Hook is a bassist who shined like a lead guitarist with his menorable bass melodies. Such a unique musician with a distinct and original sound.
Fun fact: According to Peter Hook, he began to play high up the fret of his bass guitar in the early days (not due to stylistic choice) but simply because he had crap equipment, and he wouldn't have been heard otherwise. He also mentioned that Ian Curtis liked the sound of it.
*shone
Fact.
I've also heard that Ian Curtis was the one who encouraged Hooky to use the bass as lead instrument because he didn't want to carry the band's sound with his vocals. That could explain why much of the band's output is built around Hooky's basslines.
Coolest bassist ever managed to make fairly simple stuff sound awesome better than anyone else
After he left New Order, all their songs lack a hook. I mean, the irony.
New Order without Peter Hook is like Joy Division without Ian Curtis
True @@dangrel
He missed a trick calling his band The Light. Should have called it Out of Order...
@@dangrel New Order without Hooky is a New Order cover band

Peter Hook was the one who made me look twice at a bass guitar.
I didn't know his parts were the bass, i thought it was the guitar from the first time I heard new order in 84'/85', when I saw the Love Will Tear Us Apart as an adult then I realized it was the bass 😂😂
My favorite bass player by far. Seen him on his most recent tours where he's played a couple New Order or JD albums in full. His singing has improved. When he played New Dawn Fades live I got the chills.
I went to one of those shows too, the homecoming portion. When Dreams Never End came on you could swear everyone started smiling, but being in a room with like a thousand people all joining in singing Love Will Tear Us Apart was incredible. I wont ever forget that.
Annoyingly he's playing in my hometown soon. The same night I also have tickets for Björk in a different city. Ugh....
But yeah, favorite bass player indeed. Too bad Bernard got Johnny Marr in the divorce, or Hooky and Marr could have made amazing music together.
Band perfection:
Sam Fogarino
Peter Hook
Johnny Marr
Elizabeth Fraser
instructions unclear, I ate the instrument.
What's your favourite Hooky bassline?
I'm releasing a song next weekend, keep an eye out!
Sunrise. So powerful and catchy, absolutely the core of that song.
It has to be Love Will Tear Us Apart
"Atmosphere" 😊👍🏻
Bass: Twenty Four Hours
Bass VI: Dreams never end
"Wilderness", because of the slides up and down the neck
Love these "How to's" so much! The inclusion of tabs this time is much appreciated!
No worries. I should've put them on the Marr vid too but wanted to upload it on time.
I started playing bass because of him! Iconic and powerful sound!!
As brilliant as the joy division bass lines were, he almost reinvented himself in new order, all the same legendary. Keep up the great videos!
peter hook made some of the most memorable melodies i've ever heard. Even beign a guitarist i am inspired by his playing to write my melodies.
Hook builds such beautiful melodies. There's a haunting little riff he does at the end of New Order's "Fine Time" that could have had a whole song built around it and he just throws it into the fade out.
All these "fake" Hook basslines are very compelling! Love it! Peter Hook, a bass player with truly his own sound and style.
He's just swapping them from minor to major key.
Your musical analysis is pure gold! Keep uploading more inspiring videos
I'm not a big post punk fan, but one thing thing I appreciate the most ia how bass is feature there, a leading instrument almost. In my favourite metal bands it can be inaudible let alone being featured.
Peter Hook is still being his most absolute beast ever, relentlessly touring and playing those marathon sets with no signs of slowing downs. He's one of the very best and an incredible inspiration.
Funny you did Peter Hook.
I have been re-living my New Order days recently. Power, Corruption Lies has been on repeat.
Hope you are well.
Much ❤ and admiration
Mrs A
Cheers Mrs A! It's a great album, I was bumping it a lot earlier in the year
Seen him live quite a few times and met Hooky with work. As a local he was a big inspiration for me when I started out playing, even got to tell him as such when we met. Definitely one of my fav players
The first song I ever played on a bass was transmission, matter of fact is one of my favorites JD songs, its so minimalist.
My favorite musician. And it ain't New Order without Hooky. No matter how much the band spend on high tech visuals for their live shows. He was the rock star of the band.
Hooky is the reason I started playing bass 40 years ago and I'm still playing to this day.
Very well put together!!
He's a personal hero, definitely appreciate hearing thoughts on his style.
An-mhaith!
Peter hook is the master of the chords!!
Just wanted to say I enjoy these videos.
Peter said that when he formed Joy Division they all had cheap instruments & he couldn’t hear himself over the guitar
So he developed the style he’s known for purely for practical purposes…which then became his signature sound, and the band’s sound!
Also born with a beard
I realize this approach plus Robert Smith's of the Cure shaped my guitar playing quite a bit
i love your videos so much ! ! its like auto-inspiration
This was great. Love me some Peter hook.
I'd love to see something like this for Hunter Burgan from AFI. Such an underrated player. I know people rag on their newer stuff post STS, but Hunter really shines in so much of their post DU materiel!
I loved AFI in my teens! Got into them via AOD, then listened back to BSITS, then they came out with STS and DU and those were amazing too! He had some amazing basslines in that era!
He was saying a while back that when he went to the doctor about his bad back, the doctor dismissed his theory that it was because he played bass for decades that caused it.
That was until the doctor googled his new patient and saw 4 decades worth of pictures of him hunched over playing it and he had to ring him to tell him he was right and to stop doing it.
Well done! Now we need a how to Simon Gallup
Wow, how it's easy to reach Peter Hook vibes, that is what I need, good luck in developing your profile and talent mate!
best bassist ever quite possibly
Peter Hook is great. "Disorder" has a great baseline. The blend of guitar and bass on songs like that (and most of their songs) explains why every new group from about 2004-2014 tried to play riffs like them. Definitely ahead of their time. Pete is 👌
My heart hurts for you, brother. I wish you could accept as much joy and laughs and entertainment as you've provided me. Im so bad at taking care of myself and if I learn how to before I pass, I'm rushing right to you and joining anything I can to... just give back to you brother. When times are bad, seek joy because all that can then become will be of goodness. There is joy now for there is joy when tomorrow comes and we will be glad. God bless
it’s nice that you mention the marshall head, so many people think unknown pleasures was recorded with the hiwatt when hooky actually used the marshall during that period. he didn’t get the hiwatt until later.
Your ability to synthesize artistic patterns is great.
Have you considered being a contract guitarist eith big bands on tour and get some notoriety?
Cheers m8. That's a tough gig to find, especially in Australia. It's mostly luck/nepotism (though you have to be able to play in the end). I prefer RUclips and recording my own stuff to be honest, make my own work with no bs.
Hookys bass lines are heaven sent.
Just off the dome this had made me stick perfect kiss on just for that outtro
I started playing bass with a pick because of Peter Hook. Underrated.
You have me learning and laughing at the same time. Your obvious reverence to the music I grew up with slays me. The pic you used on your album is *chef's kiss*... kills me everytime. Is that you or Robert Smith? Can't really think of an absolute fave at the moment but the opening to "she's lost control" is always playing in my head.
Haha I love that album cover too.
One of my masters...🙏👍🥰
Both Hooky and Lemmy truly redefined being a bassist is
I knew it!! I knew you took inspiration from Joy Division. Love your music bro!!!
Awesome!!!
This series cracks me up!
Your whole channel is absolutely great! What are you using for your 80's drums?
i met hooky 2 years ago, never met such a funny and down to earth geezer. Only about for shits and giggles, reason he’s my idle
That last riff ❤
Hookies Bass lines are fun, just like Steve Severin`s.
Back in the 80s, i used to love to crack open a can of beer, heat up my Marshall Top , grab my bass and play along to Joy Division tracks from "Unknown Pleasures" Happy days!!!!
What song is the first melody from?
I'm that last simple pattern foundation and let the guitar and drums build around it because they are better than me alone 😂. I'll put a link to one of my old bands practices where I started a simple bass line and then we built a 9 min instrumental around it.
desmond i love your music
You nailed it, Sir!!!!
how did u use the drums in this video? You made it from the ableton vanilla insruments and so on, or you have downloaded presets? I would really love to see you how you make different drum genres, so i could easily make guitar on top of it. Keep it up btw :)
and thanks
As a massive JD fan and early New Order, Peter’s bass playing was the notes of the gods when I was young. Then I got to meet him. What a dick.
I've been a fan of New Order since the early 80's, I always thought Peter's parts were the guitar until I saw the Love Will Tear Us Apart video, i was totally confused 😂😂. I saw an interview where he said when he started he used a guitar amp instead of a bass amp and that's why he stuck with that treble sound.
You forgot one thing. For New Order, you need a bass with 21 frets!
Thanks for this...
Best friend (Brother by choice)...
Quote...
Dude, your a Bass Player with the Heart of a Drummer who was forced to play Guitar....
this is how i play bass
don't forget to hang it down to your knees
His bass melodies and solos are also fantastic, like the ones on the Brotherhood album
correction. Peter hook used eccleshall as his signature
And that's why The Cure sounded so good.
Can't wait for "How to Desmond Doom in 1 minute"
Next step: join a dance band and become increasingly alienated from your friends because they won't let you play your bass on songs
LIVE on your G and D strings…
Love it.
wait is the last bassline original?
They all are!
@@DesmondDoom brilliant!!!
guys pleeeease help me out here the first bassline he played in the video what song is that from. been looking but i can't find it
Use a riff from a spaghetti western without anybody noticing and Blue Monday is an instant hit!!!
wow mate you are so good at this. Btw, is there released song with that droning major, the first example? sounds so sick.
Yep! Song is called "Love Is Quite Nice", check Desmond Doom on Bandcamp and you'll find it. Cheers m8
Hooky one of them ones
I have the same bass.
hey that was cool! there is just something about playing bass with a pick that makes it pop
Hook is genius.
Would pay top dollar for those JD drum samples to be available again....! 😭😭😭
Do Andy Rourke one too
You missed the bit about being a knob to your wife 😂
Forever heart emojicon Hooky.
man plays so high up on the bass that i literally can barely play it (she's lost control he plays on the 19th fret, i only have 19 frets)
Was just fucking around in FL Studio trying to make some halloween lofi maybe i shoule add some guitar if im able to.
Dude, love that final riff. Have you ever used it in a song?
Yep! Song is called "Disease" by Desmond Doom
Very rare bass tutorial! What was the title of the first track with the drone playing?
Joy Division truly were a band greater than the sum of their parts, but Hooky's playing was germaine to their sound. They're not the same without him.
You Will Heggie-d and LowLife-d on this one.
You forgot the bad ground wire and noisy tone pot that he never replaced. LOL
What about the bit of playing down by your knees?
Is there a longer version of the song being played at the end of the video?
No Chorus for
The JD stuff... this is the Sound of a well eq'd Amp... full Chorus for the NO Stuff ;) ...
and: Setting of the Strap, need to be very very Low.
Nice, do one for Jack Bruce
Aye. One octave up
Goodbye досвиданье
hello Eye Dress
What bass model guitar is in video? Im a beginner wanting to learn .
It's a Fender Player Jaguar Bass. Try find one secondhand. If you want something similar for cheaper that's still decent, try the Squier Classic Vibe Jaguar Bass. Have fun!
what is first song called?
Have you ever heard a good bass?
Which song was used in the second example of drone notes?
what is the name of this song 0:37 ????
Pick up a clone theory pedal (OG or even the bass one.) It's Hooky in a box.
