    Joy Division! This video accurately demonstrates how the bass is literally amd figuratively the biggest part of this band's sound. Don't hate: the guitar, drums and haunting vocals are stellar as well.

      Me too, didn't realize how bass-driven their sound really is until this video.

    • @blackrollins
      @blackrollins 3 года назад +50

      Totally agree. There’s definitely a melody in Peter Hook’s bass playing that is the driving force in their songs. Almost all the tracks for Joy Division open with the bass

    • @littlekingtrashmouth9219
      @littlekingtrashmouth9219 3 года назад +41

      Ian Curtis said he liked the chorus effect Peter Hook put on the bass because he could distinguish it. That’s a strength to Joy Division’s sound-each instrument had its separate place and pulled its own weight. Nothing bled in together. Everything was sparse and unique.

    They were so dark and atmospheric. 40 years on and the music still packs a punch. And to those who say real bassists don’t use picks - nobody can recreate that sound with their fingers. This deserves 1 million views.

      @@michaelcolt4196 the entire band. The whole band is based off the last minute and a half of “NDF”. Forget where I read it, but it’s fairly accurate.

    • @michaelcolt4196
      @michaelcolt4196 3 года назад

      @@steveFL450 Well yes, it does have some resemblance to songs like Stella was a diver or Obstacle 1, specially in the way they´re played but Interpol evolved into their own, of course the Joy Division influence is there

    • @steveFL450
      @steveFL450 3 года назад

      @@michaelcolt4196 yeah, you’re right. Don’t overthink it. It’s just a throwaway line from an article I read somewhere. I think of it like this: if you put that bit of “NDF” in a Petri dish in the NYC indie scene with all of its influences and let it develop you’d get Interpol and it’d go from there.
