I have never seen this movie and didn't even know it existed....until I saw this scene today, Oct. 11, 2024. Now I have to see it, even if the climax has already been spoiled. When Pacino is good, he's good.
Pacino is fucking legendary, he's the GOAT for a reason. This movie is a criminally underrated masterpiece in the legal drama genre. I'd be envious of anyone who gets to experience it for the first time.
Pacino was such a great actor. Started out as a stage actor and then moved to film, and it shows. He commands every scene just like he is acting on stage. Even with a small movement, he keeps all eyes on him
I was born in 1979 - the year this movie was made, and it's now 2024. I am now 45 years old, and I absolutely love Al Pacino's performance. Even by today's standards, 45 years later, his charisma, good looks, and style is impeccable. Even the court room of 1979 would be deemed classy by 2024's standards.
One of the greatest performances (besides his role in defending Charlie in Scent of a Woman) that should be noted! Just an outstanding deliverance of raw talent!
Must watch - AL Pacino’s RECENT (maybe only) podcast interview with Conan. The chemistry is off the charts. I’ve only have seen a few clips here on yt and seeing the visual plus Pacino and Conan’s conversation is so engaging, alive, interesting, hilarious- is just a WOW - again A MUST WATCH
"... I JUST COMPLETED MY OPENING STATEMENT!" Love that line. Love this film. Amazing that Pacino could play mousy little Arthur Kirkland here and, in the next breath, psycho Tony Montana. Brilliant actor.
Al is performing so genuinely … he’s inhabiting the ugliness and the beauty of the truth - it’s so well done. From the humor of “he forgot to bring his case” to the yelling at the presiding judge “you’re out of order” … it’s cinematic legend. Watching it again is reliving the electricity of first seeing it.
The legacy of this scene is not only that it's one of the greatest performances in cinematic history, but that it accurately describes and exposes the intrinsic nature of the entire governmental and political system. Things such as what's portrayed here are not aberrations, as they would have us believe, but the actual standard and norm of the entire sick, sociopathic leviathan.
The only problem is that, for a society that is huge - like above 20,000 people - we don't have better alternatives. The adversarial nature of justice, perversely, gives us the best hope that the truth will out.

I love how he builds up his scene from deafening silence to absolute chaos. It's perfect! The unfortunate truth is we need more people like this in real life in Washington.
Such a powerful delivery! I saw this when it came out in '79 as a 20-year-old 1st term airman in the USAF in Myrtle Beach. Half of the theater was on their feet cheering at the conclusion of this speech. I've never seen an audience reaction like this in all the years since.
That's cool. I remember seeing Higher Learning and no-one clapped, EVERYONE walked out silent. Similar intense effect but a polar opposite kind of response.
One of the greatest scenes ever filmed, Magnificent!..Easily top 5 (i think #1 personaly) i watch it at least 2 times every year to remind me of what great cinema should be and used to be!.
When he starts scremaing "My client, should go right to...", notice the jurors, They are going "WTF is going on?" With one exception. The black guy in the second row. He's keeping cool without moving a muscle 😀
LOL! I was dying when I heard his muffled voice shouting that! If he had said "And one last thing!" before he said that it would have been one of the best comic double whammies in history 😂😄🤣
Very strong movie in its day, superb acting from a young Pacino, i remember rewinding to this part about a dozen times and just replaying it, interesting to see pacino and Craig together years later in Devils advocate,
The writer was brilliant and Pacino nailed the rhythm of the delivery with the help of the editor. On a side note, actors, please observe Pacino's eye line. Do not turn your head and turn back to say your next line, keep your eyes in camera view and look downwards in dramatic thought, not the side.
The 1970’s was a acting highpoint for the young Pacino Along with Serpico this is probably Pacino’s BEST performance away from his integral role as Michael Corleone in the two Godfather movies
I’m back I have to comment again because I love Arthur Kirkland! Al Pacino really delivered in this movie 🎥 the tears are in his eyes he is so passionate in this scene! Hearing him say “both sides just want to win regardless of the truth or justice” smh that’s the law system today because defense lawyers literally lie to get a guilty client off knowing they are guilty just to win..twisting justice saying “everyone deserves a defense” um yea they do but everybody don’t deserve to be free hurting & killing others! I hate the law system today & Arthur Kirkland is a HERO!
Special mention to John Forsyth's silent performance. Firstly, he has that smug look, knowing that he's going to win the case. Then the expression changes to surprise when Arthur says the girl isn't lying. He then looks angry & disgusted when Arthur finally has his meltdown, before slumping in his chair with the look of defeat. It may be a mistrial, but Fleming's career is as good as over. Al Pacino has the dialogue, John Forsyth has the facial expressions.
It’s so sad that the American cinema was producing masterpiece after masterpiece deer hunter , and justice for all , taxi driver , midnight cowboy , raging bull , goodefellas , platoon, apocalypse now and others and then boom frigging marvel comics
It will yes. But public perception will forever be tarnished for the judge making the next trial more difficult. Arthur will also likely be disbarred. It’s the best option bc the judge had dirt on Arthur that would get him disbarred anyway to force him to represent him. The reason the judge wants Arthur to defend him is bc they have a long history of hating each other. So in the judge’s mind “if the lawyer who hates him proves he is innocent, he must really be innocent” in the public’s perception. Also the whole movie is about Arthur’s innocent clients getting screwed by the system. So he’s given up caring now.
I'm gonna go on record and say that Al Pacino had a stronger acting performance in this scene than the man playing juror no. 1 over Pacino's left shoulder at 6:17
A sad but true point on how the need to win can dangerously replace the need for justice. This is another most timeless performance by Al Pacino.
