      It's not so much the line as the direct cut to the door with Clint walking out in his pilot's uniform. We see his suggestion immediately, approve, and then look forward to the resolution--all within seconds. Great writing and direction.

    Clint Eastwood never gets old. I’ve watched him since I was a young kid watching Rawhide! Now pushing 70 I enjoy reruns Eastwood old to most current films. Brilliant to say the least.

      @@jost4897 he had to read manual. In planes the pedals are not for brakes but for rudder. Brake is usually lever.

      Only the person in the captains seat can steer the airplane on the ground with a little steering wheel to his left, so the copilot would have figured it out when Clint said "put us in take off position" as only the captain can do that.

He knew if he questioned Callihan right away or asked if he knew what he was doing or how to fly that the terrorist would have killed him right there. It wasn't until they had reached the "okay, we can't keep doing this forever" point that he asked Callihan if he could fly, betting there must be some kind of plan. Just my take, anyway.

      Listen to the engines - he's revving them up, then down, then up while on the runway.
      The terrorists didn't realize that he was messing with the thrust lever. Taking off requires full thrust and continuing down the runway.
      The first officer realized Callahan was about to enact his plan, revving up the engines. He knew sooner or later, they'd run out of runway, have to circle back, and they'd know he was never going to take off.

    Back in the eighties I worked in a UK video rental store and loved all the Dirty Harry movies.
    This apart, from the original one, was my favourite.
    Clint Eastwood was so cool and had an amazing screen presence.

    This movie came out in 1973. There were more than 300 hijackings worldwide during a 5 year period in the early 1970s. It was called the Golden Age of Hijacking.

    The man who raised me was a Marine Corps Gunnery sargent retired Vietnam combat veteran. He talked a lot like Clint did when he was at the point of delivering no nonsense strong felt statements. Cracks me up

      Yes, but not for long. The very same year that this movie was released (1973) the FAA mandated passenger screening prior to boarding due to the increase in hijackings.

      @@lewisaveryfiler7087 Although at that time the screening was at the gate. I remember flying back from visiting my grandmother, she waited with us at the gate before we boarded our flight. Now you can't even get inside the terminal without a boarding pass. Meanwhile you can walk across the border no questions asked.

    It is amazing to be watching this on a device no one at that time could even conceptualize as possible. I remember those days of flying. One just more or less walked right through the airport and got on the plane, no problem.

    Harry Callahan- Not one actor other than Clint could play that character so well and cool. Some would argue that Steve McQueen was right for the role but Clint brought out the super cool side of Harry like no one else.

      As I recall, this was the opening scene to Magnum Force. Let you know you were in for a wild ride. Hal Holbrook was an excellent nemesis here, at the peak of his acting powers, as was Clint.

    I was on that flight, glad Clint turned up to save the day. Also glad the video has been kept for posterity. I understand that it has been much used to train air crew as to how to deal with hijackers.

    He was (is?) a rotor wing rated pilot, he talked once about his favorite alone time being when he left Carmel and flew down the Big Sur coastline in his Jet Ranger. As a former Big Sur resident, and a small plane pilot, i never forgot that!

    Clint is always so good, what a presence. He's also a decent actor. Everyone else, small parts or extras, they're all are so BAD. When you're in a hostage situation you're a nervous wreck.
