Tough luck, I know! "A Few Good Men" got nominated for five Golden Globes and four Academy Awards. They were hoping to win Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (that's Jack Nicholson), Best Film Editing, and Best Sound Mixing. This is my favorite movie of all time. This scene right here is so legendary. The acting in this movie was incredible. I NEVER get tired of this movie lol. 🙏🏾❤️
In an interview with Kevin Pollock, he said they had to shoot this same scene many times from different angles using the same cameras because there weren't enough cameras to film everything in the same take (I'm quoting from memory but I believe they did 12 takes for this scene). And that could pose a problem in continuity because if the actors couldn't maintain the same facial expressions, demeanor, intensity, etc...from take to take, the final editing would be ruined. He also said that in all of the takes, Jack Nicholson would act EXACTLY like the last one, with the same intensity, facial expression, demeanor, as you just saw in the movie cut (almost like a machine). It was amazing and saved a lot of hours for everybody.

Nicholas came out firing just as he did in the final take. Everybody at the table exchanged glances, realizing that they had to up their game.
The master gives a lesson in character acting, because underneath he feels what he says. He becomes the character for the duration of shooting. People say its from the very first script reading. He has spent days absorbing whats required and he never disappoints. Anthony Hopkins said that only Brando does it as well.
He had to answer because Kaffee dared to ask. He had to put down Kaffee, and he wasn't going to let the judge decide what he would do, because that would put the judge above him. This scene is perfect.
This is the perfect example of someone who's in a position of authority being totally unsettled by being challenged. They are so used to people just doing as they are told.

I love how even the jurors begin to look really interested when Tom points out that Santiago hadn’t called a soul or packed a thing. Such a great touch.
When you infuriate someone, they only see you. They don't see the judge. They don't see the jury. They don't see the court. They come after you. It's personal.
One notable thing is Jessup complaining about not being addressed by his own honorific whilst forgetting the honorific of the judge - if there's one immediate, easy to explain lesson for new lawyers it's 'don't annoy the judge, this is their room, and as much as this trial might seem important to you, it's their day-to-day job. Getting overruled at the circuit just to punk an idiot might not be as big a deal for them as you'd hope'.
Love the little touch of Kafee's hand shaking as he drinks the water at 4:00. Behind the cocky facade he's s**t scared his bluff may go terribly wrong.
Or called his family? Or friends? Kaffee leads Jessup right into the trap, though Jessup counters well. But the situation is weird and Kaffee knows it.
Not if you know basically _anything_ about how a real courtroom actually functions. Don’t get me wrong, it’s one of the best acted scenes in movie history, but it’s not even close to how trials are in real life.
The way he talks, you'd think Jessup was being charged for doing things like executing Japanese POWs in WW2, leading a death squad in against the Viet Cong, backing South American rebels against Soviet aligned government, smuggling drugs to fund US oversea operations, or selling weapons to the Mujahideen during Soviet-Afghan War. Nope, he's being charged with indirectly causing the death of a recruit for the crime of being physically weaker than his fellow Marines. In other words, hazing gone wrong. Sure, he's in command of Guantanamo base right next to Cuba, but late 1989 Guantanamo base is no way as perilous as Jessup made it out to be. The USSR was on its last leg and Cuba was sure as shit ain't much of a threat when the Soviet was busy holding itself together. And for all his talks about responsibility, Jessup had zero problems disobeying commands he didn't like while he'd flip his shit if his command is disobeyed. Not to mention he threw fellow Marines under the bus to save his own skin.
Although Cruise was very young at the time, he was already at the bar level of performances of the greats. Nic was intense in that movie, but Cruise added quality also. Great movie
This is my all time favorite movie and this scene is my number 1. This connects with me, i was a Marine from ages 17 to 21. Semper Fi! I get tears in my eyes everytime i watch it.
I was in Armor Officer Advanced Course at Ft Knox when this came out and asked a Marine if this movie portrayed how things are in the Marines and he said this movie was accurate.
I love how smug and comfortable Jessup is at the start and as soon as the answers he gives contradict themselves his behaviour becomes much more aggressive and arrogant. Brilliant acting from Nicholson.
This is where a man's greatest asset was his downfall. Col Jessup's passion and arrogance that made him rise the ranks ultimately was used against him so brilliantly by Kaffee

For me it was Tom Cruise and imo Jack Nicholson was a total maniac in “The Shining “ but when I’d watched “interview with the vampire” Tom Cruise came in as double frantic than Jack Nicholson.
