I remember seeing an interview with Cruise shortly after the film was released where Cruise was talking about the read throughs for that scene. He stated that Nicholson delivered those lines exactly that way every time the scene was read through and Cruise said the hairs stood up on the back of his neck every time Nicholson delivered his lines. He went on to say that read throughs are usually done without the acting - just reading the lines. But Nicholson 'acted' out every scene and his delivery never changed. A brilliant man showing his brilliant skills.

Colonel Jessup grew tired of having to hide, he was dying to say he ordered the code red and that is that. He felt like he was untouchable. His arrogance came back to bite him.
Its king of ironic Jessop continually going on about honour and loyalty, yet he and Kendrick were very much OK with letting Dawson and Downey take the fall for them. So much for "loyalty", "honour" and "code". I will bet that Jessop never gave it a second thought

If he did want to look like a Marine, he would come to the position of attention, Caffey being a officer in the navy that are trained to work with and support Marines, he is a new officer after all. Would acknowledge this gesture of respect, he would then tell him to dismiss. A informal handshake might be offered by Caffey, as per protocol.

If only Colonel Jessup had stayed silent when the judge said “you don’t have to answer that question” after Tom Cruise’s character baited him into incriminating himself…but then, we’d all be deprived of one of the most riveting scenes by Jack Nicholson ever. 😉

When Kaffee asked "When Lieutenant Kendrick spoke to the platoon and ordered them not to touch Santiago, any chance they ignored him?", the answer which would have gotten Jessup off the hook would have been "Yeah, those two guys over there ignored Kendrick and disobeyed a direct order." But Jessup's ego wouldn't allow him to claim that something happened on his base which wasn't explicitly ordered by him.
He stopped Harold to tell him "You don't need to wear a patch to have honor." because he could see Harold recognized what they did wrong and felt genuine remorse for not helping Willy.
Hard disagree. I for one think this scene would be vastly improved with some unfoldable CGI helmets and some uncanny valley CGI face replacement on 2 random characters.

Because it had some stiff competition that year. Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven ended up winning that year. Both were great films that just happened to come out the same year.

I have watched and repeatedly watching because of Jack Nicholson's best acting. How could be done in front of camera, unless actor put their self in that character completely. Best acting and speech by Jack Nicholson.
Jessup is a Vietnam vet, he genuinely does believe there is a threat from communist Cuba. However for Jessup it is less of a genuine concern for the wellbeing of US citizens and more of a justification for him to be unduly harsh & exploitative with his subordinates without facing consequences.
It's actually great how real-life made Jessup's claims of being the protector of America even less sense when claiming the Cubans will kill them all, like how he claims them taking potshots at officers, when in reality they would do no such thing as even why would they invite that kind of trouble?
.This movie is a masterpiece that I always find something new in, no matter how many times I re-watch it. It never gets old because it delves into a deep side of human nature.

How Nicholson did not win the best supporting actor award for this performance is beyond me. It’s o e of the greatest scenes / the writing / acting / it’s perfect.
I always liked to venture on the Post Scripts, and what would’ve happened afterwards; Colonel Jessup would later be tried, and was offered a plea bargain, but refused, and was not only stripped of his ranking as Colonel, and removed from the USMC, but also sent to jail for life without parole. Kendrick was later arrested for accessory after the fact, and took a plea deal to receive a lighter sentence, which included his disgrace from the USMC. Downey would never recover from this, and sadly took his own life after he was removed from the USMC. Dawson on the other hand managed to get back on his feet, and became a Warden for a Prison Infirmary, showing the same respect he received after his dismissal. Most of the Court Personals would continue their jobs, except Galloway, who decided to retire, and become a recruiter. As for Ross & Kaffee, they remain a good team from opposite sides, and for Kaffee’s recognition, he was promoted to Captain of the USN for his distinguished work. A final note was that the family of Santiago were able to allow him to have a proper burial, and was compensated for the wrongful death of their beloved family member. This is only based on the Movie Plot, but we know that some do get away with wrongful acts unbecoming to any military soldier, and that we can only hope that people can learn from this, so they don’t have to make the same mistakes in the future.

I saw this with all of my friends on Christmas Day in 1992. We went to the late show that night at 9:30PM. I was 22 years old and we had a good time:)
When Jessup turns away at 5:10, his necktie appears to be missing, or at least so disarranged that the knot is concealed by the collar. A couple of seconds before it was still in place.
It's there, look to the right of the shirt button, there's 2 more layers of khaki next to the jacket lapel.

How Nicholson did not win the best supporting actor award for this performance is beyond me. It’s o e of the greatest scenes / the writing / acting / it’s perfect.

I always liked to venture on the Post Scripts, and what would’ve happened afterwards;
Colonel Jessup would later be tried, and was offered a plea bargain, but refused, and was not only stripped of his ranking as Colonel, and removed from the USMC, but also sent to jail for life without parole. Kendrick was later arrested for accessory after the fact, and took a plea deal to receive a lighter sentence, which included his disgrace from the USMC. Downey would never recover from this, and sadly took his own life after he was removed from the USMC. Dawson on the other hand managed to get back on his feet, and became a Warden for a Prison Infirmary, showing the same respect he received after his dismissal. Most of the Court Personals would continue their jobs, except Galloway, who decided to retire, and become a recruiter. As for Ross & Kaffee, they remain a good team from opposite sides, and for Kaffee’s recognition, he was promoted to Captain of the USN for his distinguished work. A final note was that the family of Santiago were able to allow him to have a proper burial, and was compensated for the wrongful death of their beloved family member.
This is only based on the Movie Plot, but we know that some do get away with wrongful acts unbecoming to any military soldier, and that we can only hope that people can learn from this, so they don’t have to make the same mistakes in the future.

I've never seen this movie, have no clue what the plot is, and yet somehow this still had me gripped. Just the acting and writing of this scene alone might convince me to watch the whole thing
