I was an extra in this scene. I was standing way in the back on the left side. we were told before we even went into the church to film this scene to not approach al Pacino whatsoever. well Pacino is a perfectionist and we shot this scene sooooooo many times and within those takes whenever he passed me I thought to myself Im going to touch his shoulder, lol so when he passed me again I did touch his shoulder and when I did that he turned around to see who it was and I acted like it wasn't me,lol
If Al Pacino gave speech to a thousand people and told them they were 28 feet tall and they were about to invade Mars they'd believe him . . . and invade it. He's a genius.
You can only be relevant as President for eight years. Al's career as an actor is not only decades-long, but in a hundred years his films will still be admired.
@@YassTheClasshe's just an actor though. He didn't write one word here. It's hard to believe but he's just a vessel. That's what brilliant about it. The actor and the writer are both brilliant and the director and everyone does their part

Oh my goodness I was an extra in this scene the little girl in the fourth row who stands up at the end chewing gum lol 😂 can’t believe I got to shake Al Pacino’s hand outside after the scene and didn’t even know who he was 🤩
This is one of the very best but Al did many but it just shows one man can do and should do, be heard and know right from wrong and teach us all to be so much better!
Whenever I get down and need motivation, I watch this movie segment. I love the line-- "I will go down that way". I choose to fight back. I choose to rise, not fall" " And I know what's within me is within you." Great stuff.
This is the greatest speech I know. Oddly spoken by an actor within a few minutes in a feature film with a fictional story. It might be fitting that the best sermon I know is also in a feature film. Orson Welles voiced them in a matter of minutes in 1956's "Moby Dick".
Just depends on the letter in front of there name D or R. Democrat would be inspiring, stirring, truth, a republican it would be where did he get the nerve, the gall of that man, how dare he.
@@leodejongful You hit it on the head. I've never seen this movie, but after watching this speech, I knew exactly who this character, at least for the sake of this scene, was based on. It's even in the body language.
I firmly agree. As bombastic and inappropriate as this speech would be in real life, it also doesn't really work as a scene. Obviously it was intended as an emotional high point but it's a little too obvious as Al Pacino engaging in his trademark histrionics.
(Thank you, Reverend.) I was warned not to come here. I was warned. They warned me, "Don't stand behind that coffin." But why should I heed such a warning when a heartbeat is silent and a child lies dead? "Don't stand behind" this coffin. That boy was as pure and as innocent as the driven snow. But I must stand here, because I have not given you what you should have. Until we can walk abroad and recreate ourselves, until we can stroll along the streets like boulevards, congregate in parks free from fear, our families mingling, our children laughing, our hearts joined -- until that day we have no city. You can label me a failure until that day. The first and perhaps only great mayor was Greek. He was Pericles of Athens, and he lived some 2500 years ago, and he said, "All things good of this earth flow into the City because of the City's greatness." Well, we were great once. Can we not be great again? Now, I put that question to James Bone, and there's only silence. Yet, could not something pass from this sweet youth to me? Could he not empower me to find in myself the strength to have the knowledge to summon up the courage to accomplish this seemingly insurmountable task of making a city livable? Just livable. There was a palace that was a city. It was a palace! It was a palace and it can be a palace again! A palace in which there is no king or queen or dukes or earls or princes, but subjects all -- subjects beholden to each other, to make a better place to live. Is that too much to ask? Are we asking too much for this? Is it beyond our reach?! Because if it is, then we are nothing but sheep being herded to the final slaughterhouse! I will not go down that way!! I choose to fight back!!! I choose to rise, not fall! I choose to live, not die!! And I know, I know that what's within me is also within you! That's why I ask you now to join me. Join me, rise up with me; rise up on the wings of this slain angel. We'll rebuild on the soul of this little warrior. We will pick up his standard and raise it high! Carry it forward until this city -- your city -- our city -- his city -- is a palace of God! Is a palace of God! I am with you, little James. I am you.
Is this scene meant to be as ghoulish as it feels? Pacino's character is basically using a child's funeral for a glorified campaign speech. I mean, it SOUNDS inspiring, until you remember the setting it's taking place in.
So he's supposed to go out the back like they wanted him to? What should a child's funeral be for? The parents are looking for something to give it meaning and that comes from the church or the govt but always from behind a pulpit. Everyone would always remember the funeral and the occasion that he gave this speech it was precisely that that made it so powerful this isn't the kind of speech you give after the teams little league didn't win the world series or the sheriff got caught embezzling from the jail. The Mayor transforms almost hallows the boys death and the occasion little kids should have to recite long passages of it at school alongside Lincoln and King.
3:34-4:05 Motivates me to a level so deeply. I take things deeply too, I view the "Sheep being hearded to the final slaughter house" as failing in succeeding. It's hard to, but whenever you think you can't do something or give up, think of what's going to happen to you in the future. Are you going to be successful? Or are you going to be a sheep being herded to the final slaughter house?
The amazing thing about this speech is, if I recall this was one take. he did such a good job that some of the camera crew forgot to cut to certain spots because they were so taken up in the moment. The speech is even more powerful if you know what the movie is about and the context of what is happening in that scene.
If you've seen City Hall you'd know that this speech isn't sincere. It's a political speech, meant to win support. Ultimately the mayor isn't willing or able to carry through his promises. That's why Pacino delivers it in a way that isn't totally convincing. It's a superb bit of acting.
As Great as oacino was J.Cusack steals this movie for me.He went toe to toe with a titan .This might be JCusacks best role out out of Say Anything and Gross Point Blank.

What a rude, selfish thing for this mayor to do. Instead of eulogizing the deceased he took the opportunity to campaign to these grieving people. What a douchebag.
