this is a good movie with good actors and gets no recog for it... no re runs on tv, didnt remember hearing much about it back then either. 90's pacino in the church scene lol.. its always a good movie when al yells
I spent a bit of this past summer revisiting Pacino's 90s work. From what I've noticed, his reputation for "overacting" is really just having one scene or two in a whole movie where he has to give a loud monologue but is also subtle in most other scenes and not as loud as audiences make it seem. I can understand that it feels repetitive and tedious but the wording of dialogue, the moments in the script or the overall personality of a character may also force an actor to make certain character choices. There have been movies where Pacino wasn't set up for that. City Hall is not a masterpiece that I'd recommend to all my friends, but those who mock him overlook quiet scenes like this.
One of those movies that oozes in style and substance that doesn't get the recognition it deserves.....absolutely powerful scene along with speech scene and not to mentioned the original soundtrack.......
The scenes with Pacino and Cusack opposite each other are the highpoints of this movie. One acting legend with a charismatic, youthful cult figure. Pacino tends to overact at certain points, but he reigns it in most of the time. But then that volcanic pulse in Pacino's acting is whats made him a legend. This also a somewhat decent look big city politics.
John Cusack has never been a world superstar but he's a star that never fades and survives the world's super stars that only last a movie or two, and all the great stars like Al Pacino, Gene Hackman, John Malkovich, Kevin Spacey, Billy Crystal, Julia Roberts, etc.. want to be in his movies.
i feel bad for Pacino's character. He is a career politician and quite ambitious, but he had concern and understanding for the citizens. He just made one mistake that festered into a tragedy. Politics is dirty all over, and everyone who plays gets a little dirty with it, but some might actually make a difference if it weren't for all the dirt. It's a paradox. He sort of reminds me of Richard Caliguiri, a charismatic mayor of Pittsburgh whose brightness was ended too soon.
- scena dal film city hall con dialoghi in lingua originale - Personalmente penso una delle più grandi interpretazioni di Al Pacino in questo film non molto conosciuto
My personal culture trainer , cineclub.
Great and soooo underrated movie!!! John Cusack was fantastic!!! Al Pacino was great as well. It was nice to see Bridget Fonda here - maybe the most underrated actress of all time. City Hall rocked in 1996.

“If a sparrow dies in Central Park, I feel responsible”
Best line
I doubt Bill DeBlasio has such feelings for NYC
@@tupacisgod4875 I doubt any of the mayors anywhere do.
I bet that this line was stolen from Umar (644 AD)

This movie reminds me the mysterious and fabulous environment of 90s...
What a masterpiece, Cusack , Pacino, Aiello, Fonda, Franciosa cinema beasts, honor mention: Landau.
AL PACINO AKA JOHN PAPPAS & JOHN CUSACK AKA KEVIN CALHOUN ARE SO AWESOME IN CITY HALL (1996 ) FILM !!!!

grey is a tough color....what a line
one of my favorite Pacino movie, next to the Godfather
I thought this film was rather boring, but I did love the performances City Hall featured. This scene and the funeral speech stuck with me the most.

They should have made Pacino's Michael in Godfather Part 3 look like Mayor John Papas
