  • A hiker accidentally shot himself while fighting a 400-pound brown bear in Alaska. As the massive bear pounced, Tyler Johnson was somehow able to grab his pistol and shoot. However, he accidentally shot himself above his knee. His other leg was in worse shape after the bear bit into it. Fortunately, Johnson's dad wrapped his son's leg in a makeshift tourniquet and signaled for help using his satellite service. Two hours later, a helicopter came to the rescue.

      @@airy-mountain I just figured inside edition didn't have to use the dead bear as the video thumbnail, but nobody can hold them accountable. Now when somebody else does it such as a Hunter or in this guys case just a defender, they risk a channel strike. I'm sure he just was documenting not going look at me I killed a bear.

      As someone who does deliveries in the city all day, you'd be surprised how many people haven't left their home since covid started. For most Americans that live in cities their life consist of, commute to work, work, commute home and repeat. Everything they know about the world is what they see online

      Based on the story, there's no indication he was harassing or chasing the bear. If we take it at face value, the bear suddenly appeared and rushed him without warning.
      Granted, it's possible there's more that we aren't being told. But as of what we know now, there's nothing indicating he was pestering the bear.
      Unless your argument is that no human should ever be in the woods, ever?

    Glad he survived but hey, if you're going to go hunting/hiking/ day tripping in Grizzley Bear land, well...enter their neighborhood at your own risk! The Bear was just defending its turf or cubs and now, sadly, it is dead.

      It wasn't just her home. It has also belonged to moose, gophers, eagles, caribou and humans for thousands of years. And she should've run. Most bears her size would run when startled; especially in that area, as they're used to human presence and know the boundaries. The men had the right to defend themselves. Yeah, it's a pity she didn't get a chance to pass along those beautiful genes, but she's the one who made the wrong call.

    Wow! Quick in action. I lived near Sequoia national forest in California been around California black bears they rarely attack unless to protect their cubs or feel threatened. I had a close call of a bear ready to charge, I stood tall made loud noise, yelled and that scares them off

      The head went to a lab for rabies testing. Where the rest of it went depends on Alaska state laws. But it's doubtful the meat went to waste. It would go to the men who killed the bear, to a soup kitchen and/or to a local Alaska Native tribe.

    I think he was in shock. He was soooooo calm. I feel bad for the bear but im super happy this guy and his dad came out of it with only minor injuries considering how badly he could have been mauled.
