MANY parents struggle to maintain discipline in their home. But spare a thought for Jim and Susan Kowalczik whose main charge is a huge 1400lb Kodiak brown bear. The couple look after the 9ft giant at their orphanage where they have dedicated their lives to rescuing and releasing injured animals. They now care for 11 bears, including Kodiak brown bears, Syrian bears and black bears on their 100 acre estate in Otisville, New York. Most were rescued as cubs from breeding programs or nature reserves that closed down.

I’m originally from Middletown NY, close to Otisville. My Dad is a mason that had to do a job for Jim and Susan around 2018. As a single father, he took me and my brother to their plot of land and I was lucky enough to get to hand feed these bears and see how gentle they really are. I was about 10 at the time and now as a 15 year old I can only remember how great of an experience this was.

It made me cry when they got emotional about the bears they have lost, you can see the pain their faces and hear it in their voices. Those bears are their children, so it’s no different from the pain of talking about lost children. 😢

The bond between people and Animals can be exactly the same as real family. Its hard saying goodbye to family or friends.
I still cry over the animals I've lost and it's been years. I couldn't imagine having something in my life for 20-30 years just for them to pass away.

@@metroplier2670 Its worst actually, when you realize that animals are so much more vulnerable than other humans, the precious life of an animal become more important. And the sentient aspect of animals with their loves, hates, fear and etc., makes you more responsible towards theses guys. A domestic cat/dog/rabbit... dying, ill or suffering, I think its more terrible than a baby human, because the world is adapted to us, its usually no big deal, and they will grow, but animals stay vulnerable from day 1 to the last days.
Nothing beats a big bear hug….literally.

@Kristen Lopez it can be done, but in comparison taming a deer, fox, bobcat and a whole host of other animals we normally would not keep at home seems easy. Here it’s not just the level of inadaptability to normal environs that makes it difficult, but the level of danger.
Dogs have been conditioned for living with humans through thousands of years of selective breeding. Comparing dogs to bears is ridiculous.
I could say the same thing about dogs. They’re always so cute, and yet so fierce. Don’t even get me started on the tiny dogs. They’re so clingy to the point where it feels like it’s gonna bite my nose and/or nuts off! I don’t like to think that a random tiny dog is gonna run towards me, pounce right on my face, and tear my nose right off!
I totally get it when he starts crying after their 'children-bears' died. I feel that way about my past dogs. They were my friends, they were my family. I get it.

The key part of this video is that they are passionate but also have a place dedicated to the bears. They aren't taking a bear out of the wild and putting it in their living room, they made this sanctuary where the bears can exist and thrive just in a different way. I really admire these people.

Bears are pretty intelligent creatures so they can sense and appreciate the deep connection that this couple has. Sure, that danger is always there but it's all about how long you train, how they have been raised, and understanding how the relationship with the animal works. The more dangerous the animal is, the harder you need to work to achieve the relationship and do you're research.
@@evanurena8868 how bout reptiles since they dont have the same brain functions that other animals do, like feelings towards there owners, just look at Mark Zuckerberg as an example of an emotionless reptilian.
As long as they feed them plenty and bear never gets hungry, they'll be fine.
Bears are primarily brawlers, not ambush predators like tigers so they don't get the pounce instinct that big cats do when they see a person's back so bears are much less dangerous overall. The bears would probably only hurt him if they go too far with playing since they may not know their own strength.
