Our Unimog on the Canning Stock Route - One of the Iconic 4x4 tracks in the World.

  • Following the route (or close to it) blazed by Alfred Canning back in 1906, we take our Unimog up the Canning Stock Route from the intersection of the Talawana Track up to the Tanami Road and Halls Creeks.
We initially wanted to drive across from Newman in WA to Alice Springs along the Talawana track and Gary Junction Road, but the checking the weather forecast for Alice, we saw it was way too cold hitting highs of 5C, so we took this shortcut back up north to to the warmer weather in Kununarra instead. We already had the permits for the CSR, as they are needed for the section of the Talawana track that is combined with the CSR, so we turned left instead of going straight.
This video show our truck in it's element, easily handling what is one of the toughest 4x4 tracks in the world. Countless dunes and endless corrugations, 40C heat during the day, and -5C at night. The vast emptiness and tranquility of this track is magical, the desert so quiet at night you can hear your own heart beating.
We did photo shoot everyday, both for taking a break from driving but also to create something special in this remote place, and the video shows the ones we are allowed to show here. You can find more photos here
    onlyfans.com/trish_unimogadve...
If you are interested in a KML or GPX file of our exact route, let us know.

Awesome pics incredible landscape and it seemed always changing along with the vegetation and terrain, you guys certainly picked and modified the correct truck for your mission, I would have never thought about the width of the tires but after you mentioned it if your were to wide that would cause all sorts of complications! A friend of mine who I bought my last U1300L from goes to Africa and does runs similar to yours and he of course runs Unimogs also! Great trip folks and thanks for the very informative documentation and the pictures. Great footage and narration of an adventure in the outback , but Re: the flies , Darling thats not flies , i worked on a farm in WA many years ago , and as you walked it made a crunching sound under foot like coco pops , that was the flies , and you dare not talk and tried to keep nostrils and ears as closed as possible , and walking through one of the big sheds with a large roller door at either end on a sunny day it was like you had very very dark sunglasses on due to the flies :) .
Thats one part of my adventure at the time on an around Australia working holiday i wont repeat :) .

G'day. Just calling in from across the ditch. That was just a teaser eh.? You're going to give us a 4x20min series later on.? That was bloody brilliant guys. Love to see you do a trackside cook up next time. Nothing cheffy. Fire, boil up a billy of tea, and using your camp oven do up a damper over the coals. Don't know what areas have those stingless bees, but apparently a small part of a comb of their honey goes well with hot damper. The bees get pissed off, but they soon replace what's been taken. Btw, love the photo shoots, but the cookup would blend in great with the rest of the episodes. Keep em coming. Take care and stay safe. Atb from across here in EnZed.

That was a fun video - lots of great details (photos and video)
An interesting point that you see a lot more up there - on the other hand (as you pointed out) you catch a lot more brush as well. (give & take)
Good decision to have chosen a vehicle with similar track width to the other vehicles traveling the same trails. It has been shown that if you install much wider tires on normal-sized vehicle (troopy size) you have a better chance of catching flats.
If you could have a do-over with minimal costs - what rig would you choose to do the kind of travel you are doing? (or not!)

    • @UnimogAdventures
      @UnimogAdventures  3 года назад +2

We have been asked that question a few times, probably would stick with a Unimog, it just seems the right vehicle for us. We like that it is big enough to live inside, but small enough to fit in a normal car park at the shops.

@@UnimogAdventures I have a Transit Van that I like for just that - THat you can live inside when need be. But it is just not great on a challenging track. Now I am building a smaller more capable rig that you could grudgingly live inside - but not as leisurely as the van. That's life - all good though. Thanks for the reply.

I'm glad I stumbled across your video,it's an interesting part of the world for sure.I watch whatever I can find on the CSR.Your truck makes the hills look small, but there's plenty of them, and all the big holes left by careless people makes it a little less pleasant. You made reference to the Anne Beadell Highway,in your Land Rover.I imagine you filmed your journey,is it available to watch?A link would be great if you would be so kind🙂

What a trip. Excellent detailed trip report. Sound track was very good, not the noisy typical one's. Photos were of excellent quality as well. Some questions I would like to make if possible. Was this a stock Unimog? What changes have you made? Who made your "box"? Looks very neat. Well done and thanks for. sharing such experience. 👍

Thanks for the comments glad you like the video. Our truck is far from a stock Unimog, it took us 6 years to turn it into what it is today. This video shows what we did ruclips.net/video/bt-4kbC3B3E/видео.html , and Iain did most of the work himself.
We will be doing a "walk around" video showing all the things we have done to the truck.

First time seeing your channel. Let me begin by writing, I mean no disrespect to you or your husband and hope you take what I'm about to say as a compliment but, Christ you're beautiful! You're husband is an extremely lucky man! I think my wife would love you, she would gobble you up! Like a lot of women, you probably get tired of him wanting to kiss you from head to toe every chance he gets. (as well as asses like me commenting) But, Congratulations to him for finding and being able to hold onto you and to you for keeping yourself looking like you do, I'm sure it's hard work! Nothing hotter than an intelligent, smokin hot "girl next door" with an awesome smile, personality and an adventurous outlook on life! Best of luck to yas!
