Good call turning around mate. Being solo, you have to have lower the risk appetite. In some cases it takes more balls to turn around than to keep going. This was one of them.

Travelling solo is a big thing. I do it all the time and anytime there is adversity, your world comes crashing down. You doubt yourself, you think of who is watching and who you are letting down. I have turned back and come home on trips and it takes a while to get over it.
The Canning is next level, solo is next stratosphere. Chin up. Not many have gone there. Good luck with wherever you end up heading. 👍

You can’t steal second base with your foot on first. Challenging ourselves is how we advance so there is no shame in finding the limit.
Hard decision to turn around but well done!

Mate good call, for all the reasons you said. CSR is serious territory. Better to get out, have a rethink on the whole thing and give it another crack, another day. The WR would be a far better choice I reckon! Great video!

75L of fuel was probably 1400km worth. I found the T7 was surprisingly fuel efficient in the desert.
I want to do the canning one day. It will probably be on the T7.
PS... and yes... suspension needs to be upgraded!
    Good luck for next time!

Thanks mate. The fuel anxiety had set in and in hindsight exacerbated the weight/weight distribution issue. All noted for next time.
Good luck. Looking forward to seeing how you go about it!

Very interesting video mate just ran across it. Yes good call you did not look happy. For what it’s worth your fuel calculation was not too far off. Did it on an adv modded dr650 which is also pretty heavy setup. I carried 55 litres of fuel which was exactly right but we had the fuel dump from Capricorn road house back then. With out the fuel drop I would have needed 65 for the longer leg. Re the bike handling badly it was the weight behind the rear axle that did it. You should not have anything over five kilos behind the rear axle. It creates a pendulum effect that makes the bike very difficult to use ride. Even when I had a bm1150gs in these kind of tracks, even 10 kg behind the rear axle made the bike very hard to use. You would not think so on a 280 kg bike plus gear but there you go. Like you I found out the hard way on the border track 😅.
Hope this helps the T7 is a beautiful bike and can definitely do the canning once you get it properly set up.
Good luck on your next try mate doing a crossing late July, wish me luck.

I have seen guys mount a frame for 10L fuel containers in front of you feet, running off the crash bars, it would centralise the weight of the bike taking 20kg off the back.

You don't have to be disappointed. It's a step forward with this adventure. On the contrary, it is a success. It's when things don't work that we learn the most. We learn from our experience. Next time you will be equipped in a different way and you will try again. It's just a matter of time. Have a nice trip. Thanks for your video.

    Thanks for keeping it honest.
We all struggle with these issues when we ride solo.
Well done for making the right call.
A trip like that needs a lot of things to go right for success, and only one to go wrong for disaster.
Better to turn around today, and come back and conquer it tomorrow.

Yeah right decision mate but I feel your pain brother. When u have so much weight over the back wheel u lose your steering and it gets really wobbly. The bike sort of flexes and gets wobbly and that's when the front wheel digs in. Would have thought 55 litres would have got you the 1000k range u need. Try and pack the heavy things like the fuel cans as low as possible so bottom of panniers.
Going by the trailer the rest of the trip looked good so looking forward to next vid 👍🤙

    • @nextstopadv

Cheers Steve. I reckon the one thing I took away is weight central and low as opposed to just trying to get it to the rear. Like you said, that steering becomes way too light otherwise. Cheers mate.

Smart decision to turn around. YT is full of guys and gals who pushed the limits and didnt make it. I just got the Camel ADV fuel tank. Works great, extra 5 liters of fuel tucked away. If you can whittle down that load I have no doubt you will rock it. Well done! Keep up the great content. Its not a 'failure', its a learning curve without permanent damage.

Thanks Phil. I very nearly went the Camel Tank but with this trip in mind I opted for the slightly bigger Acerbis instead. I’ll be sure to make time for a pre-run before the next attempt! Cheers.

Don't be sorry for turning around and "not making the Canning Stock Route video". It's your life, why risk it for a video? Wise move, I'd have done the same. Many more good- and safer- rides to come 😎👍

Feel for you mate because you looked so down! You made the right call though as you were alone and not feeling confident, absolutely nothing to be sorry about. You may remember I posted on the last vid that you and I were setting off at the same time...well i had to change up my trip due to a shoulder injury. Better to be safe than stuck in the middle of nowhere alone and in a bad spot!

Fair call IMO. That was sketchy AF. I don't think a lighter bike will help, you'll still have to carry all that heavy fuel. I'm thinking you'd need 4x4 support for that ride.

When I watched your prep video with all that gear to carry , I was wondering what sand riding secret you had that I didn't know about ?
I have a Tenere with suspension upgrade & I still can't ride sand any deeper than 2 inches with the bike loaded up like yours . That's not to say it can't be done , I've just never seen it done .

Weight too high and too far back. Wise call. Maybe tank saddle bags on top of sone suspension work.
Be interesting to hear your fuel and distance expectations. 70 liters is a massive amount to carry.

    • @nextstopadv
      @nextstopadv  Год назад

Hey mate. I recently saw a post about those tank bags. Going to look into them. I didn’t get a chance to do a pre-run but have found the T7 gets thirsty at high speeds and rough stuff. My initial plan was 66l giving me a minimum 15km/l. As I got closer I reflected on my personality and thought there is zero chance I’d be wanting to divert to Parngurr if I was running short so I bought the extra Jerry and dropped a drink bottle taking me to a projected 69l. Once I had filled up I realized I had way more than expected.
      Hope you’re going well mate.
