@KrunchTastic what's your recipe
heee i caught that Solient Green joke !!!
“ ITS PEOPLE “
I don’t even own a dog, but I constantly see commercials for various dog food brands each claiming to be better than the others. So I was just curious to see how it’s really supposed to be done, good ol’ homemade.
I thought I was the only one who dipped sweet potatoes into into bone broth before I dry them for my dogs. Lol. It’s a magical trick! My dogs didn’t like sweet potatoes plain. They eat them now. I wish I had a freeze dryer.
You don't need a freeze dryer if you're dehydrating! It works just fine! Not saying that to brush off your desire, but DH work well for so much!
Thank you for allowing your Dad to bring his dog. Most people would dumped her at the shelter ❤
Hi! Thank you for another interesting video. Glad that you have included treats for our furry friends. I have not read all the comments, but I wanted to add something. I once belonged to a dogs treats group and they always stressed that any meat that was going to be dehydrated raw for pets had to be deep frozen for at least a week to kill parasites. Also, after the raw meat treats have been dehydrated, and depending on the protein used, they had to be "oven blasted" for 5 minutes at 150C in order to kill bacteria harmful to humans handling the treats. Keep dehydrating!! :)
I buy beef heart from the grocers and slice it thin and dry. The dogs are so in love! Also have made cooked sweet potato blended with chicken liver, using a ziplock bag with a cut corner, I squeeze blobs out and dehydrate. They love them!
I'll try this. Thank you
Such a great idea! Thank you
Do you have a channel? Would love to subscribe so that I can follow your recipes ❤
Darcy I love this. Please do more dog treats. I rescue dogs and I have nine. I'm all about the healthy way2go. Thank you so much Darcy
That's the plan!
I wish I could have 9 3s the limit.
I make liver biscotti
Substitute a basic biscotti recipe liver cooked and ground shredded garlic turnip and some carrot. 2 loaves slice and bake well 2nd time. Perfect training treats.
I dehydrate mango, papaya, and apples with the skins for my Aussie. She loves them. She won’t eat them raw. I make dehydrated chicken, beef heart, and liver strips too. I found out the hard way (mold) that they must be refrigerated or frozen. I like the seasoning ideas.
Shelby is adorable. One of the ways you have saved me thousands of dollars, Darcy, is learning how to dehydrate my own dog treats. I do potatoes, liver, shrimp shells, you name it. My dog loves them, they are healthy, and they are cheap!
I did sweet potatoes for our dog and used the canned sweet potatoes in light syrup since we don’t eat them sweet. Rinsed, cut into small slices and dehydrated. She loved them. She regularly gets bits of people food anyways so I’m sure she would love the chicken and the sweet potatoes in chicken broth.
I use canned pumpkin, no spice type.
I add it to her canned dinner.
I've been making chicken jerky treats this way for my dog for awhile now. Was glad for the information about human chicken jerky needing to be cooked first since I from time to time I have eaten one of the dog's treats. 😮
You made me laugh....that's cute......from time to time you have eaten one of the dog's treat...well, why not! LOL
Oh Lord 😂
Shelby is beautiful. Nutritional yeast is also a good topping.
Love this idea!!! I just got a puppy so it's a timely one!! I used to make jerky all the time for my family and I discovered a little secret that works amazingly well. Go to your deli counter at the grocery store and have them slice chicken or beef or whatever fairly thin, not shaved, just thin. This meat is already pre-cooked. Take it home, marinate it, then dehydrate for awesome jerky!
Thank you, great ideal!
Deli meat?!
@@justus4685 Yes!
I dehydrate deli meat for myself frequently. I do try to find lower sodium cuts because the salt content can be very highly concentrated once the meat is dry. I wouldn't use it as dog treats due to the high salt. But they do get really crispy and tasty.
This is great! We just throw shredded cheese on the floor for treats for our dogs.
Will try this method out!
LOl - and anything else that happens to drop on the floor ;) She definitely has learned where to go sniffling when she comes in from outside.
Thank you Darcy for these recipes! It looks like Shelby really like your treats! This is so much better to do your own treats, you can make them to your dog’s taste or needs… and it costs a lot less than bought at the store. Unfortunately for us, we lost our beautiful furry friend Kimo over three years ago, I know hw would have loced them. Once I started making his dog cookies, he did not want any others… sometimes friends of mine wanted to give him their dog cookies or treats, but if they came from the store, hexwould not eat them. So I would make a batch every second weeks and freeze them… even when we went camping with him, they were on his list. 😊 I will share your video with my friends, I really like your videos, they are cery informative as well. Thank you again!
So sorry about Kimo (hugs)
@@ThePurposefulPantry Thank you Darcy! He was a special companion. 🥰 It’s nice to see your dad has his… and you will make him treats, etc… he is in paradise!
Such a timely video. I just bought sweet potatoes to make treats for my fur babies. Now I have a game plan for preps.
Have fun! Hope they love them!
Thanks, another great use for my tea strainers.
I've never occur to me to make doggy treats such as sweet potatoes and chicken livers. I'm going to make some chicken liver this weekend for my three doberman dogs. I've been giving them sliced hot dogs instead of store bought treats. After a few years back there was a major call back on milk bones treats it was founded that it was laced with poison. Every since then I have given them sliced hot dogs. They of course loved them. I felt a little more at ease to do this . Now after watching your video on dog treats I am changing things up for them. I have been watching your channel for three years and love your content. Keep up the good work in providing awesome information to improve our lives with great saving tips.
God Bless.
And think about how much healthier those treats will be for them!
Great video. I've. Been doing this for years.. It saves money and is health for the animal. They love mixed veggies. Rescued animals for 30 years. This is a good way to get a sick dog get healthy.
My lab loves dehydrated frozen green beans. We make 2 bags at a time.
That's a great idea!
Awww Shelby is a beauty! Her antics reminds me of my Sheltie, Lacy who passed last year. But I have a 10 pound poodle mix that LOVES fresh cooked sweet potatoes. I will have to dehydrate some for him!
I know this is aimed at dogs, but I might try a couple pieces of chicken for my cat.
She is really high prey drive, helps keep mice in check. This can be a reward for that mouse she catches.
My cats absolutely love dehydrated chicken. I dehydrate them in the strips then break them into small bite sized pieces for my cats.
Another wonderful video. I am now making my dog’s food (she is 13) and was today thinking about her treats. Your video is great timing for us. You have helped me so much on dehydrating and using what has been preserved. I think you are fantastic. Thank you.
Thank you so much for this. . . . I've been cooking chicken and mixing it (in my stand mixer) with sweet potatoes or other dog-safe foods for my dog now that he's older and beginning to have joint issues. However, I didn't think of adding turmeric and pepper for him, I take turmeric myself (duh!) - I also hadn't yet thought of dehydrating these for him, I've been freezing them either in muffin pans or just in mounds on a cookie sheet.
Haha! Enjoyed the Soylent Green reference 😆
Okay - now to finish watching the video!
Thank you so much Darcy! I’ve been thinking about making my own dog treats. Great timing!❤
I have just begun my dehydrating journey and am extremely excited that I found Darcy. I keep watching all of your videos and learn from everyone of them. Thank you.
Wonderful!
I love Herb Ox. Searched all over looking for broth that didn't have MSG 🎉
Our puppies Thank You for the healthy treat options 🌹👍🤗
I have done this for years - meat only. Used my oven before getting a dehydrator. So happy to see this video. Also, I use beef heart a lot. However, mine are minus any seasonings. Great video! Thanks!!! ❤ 👍
This video was so helpful and easy to follow. Thank you for sharing!
I have done sweet potatoes cooked, raw, etc. for dog treats. I put a dab of peanut butter on them for a little snack every morning before we go out to the barn for chores. I've also done it 'perfect' for my own meals. Sweet potatoes aren't just for Thanksgiving!
Be careful with the broth that you use for pet treats.
Most information sources warn against onion for cats and dogs.
I looked up several brands and they all contained onions.
Just something to be aware of.
Besides all artificial flavors and chemicals.
Great video and great tips. I make my own dog treats for my dogs as well. I do pork meat and various fruits. I season the meats in apple cider vinegar for a day and then dehydrate for a day too. I will add turmeric and pepper next time I make it. Thanks for the video.
Thank you very much! I am always concerned about keeping natural food and treata for my dogs. My tiny Papillon is very sensitive. I wanted to do this, but didn't know how. They both love sweet potatoes, too. Thank you. I have learned much from you over time. Again, Thank you!
I've tried the chicken strips but not the sweet potatoes. Thanks you so much! This will be my next dehydrated product.
The sweet potatoes were not a big hit until I used the chicken broth method!
@@ThePurposefulPantry I will certainly try it. A bag of chicken jerky costs 23.00 so make your own is much better.
I'm definitely doing this for my dogs. The tea ball idea is genius, I'm totally doing that from now on. My dogs love the flavor of turmeric too, great idea adding it to the jerky.
Great video Darcy. I have a bag of sweet taters and have been putting off drying them as I have plenty right now. This is another way to use them and they will keep. Also I use canned chicken legs that are past what I think is great eating, so I will carefully debone, grind up and dehydrate it. When it gets nearly dry, I cut in strips and turn over to finish up. But this time I will use the turmeric trick!
That's a really good idea. I never think to use leftover meat for dog treats. I typically make dog food with it. I will try this!
Thank you
Our dogs favorite treats are chicken yogurt. You have given me some very good ideas 😊
Would u mind sharing ur recipe pls? This sounds interesting. Thank u
I like the bags you use to store the dog treats in. Do you have a link to share on where I could buy them? Enjoy watching your videos.
You can get them from Target, Whole Foods, Amazon, Walmart, etc. They are expensive, but I've been slowly replacing most of my plastic storage use with them and with some less expensive ones that work well, too, and glass containers whenever it makes sense. Earth Day will be a good day to buy them locally if your stores tend to put these kinds of things on sale then.

Thank you Darcy for another great video. My dog is elderly and has a lot of teeth missing. Do you think I could dehydrate sweet potatoes but dehydrate them to where they are slightly chewy? I love the ideal of making her treats instead of the ones you buy. I've had to start buying the chewier ones and to me they smell and look disgusting. She just gets a tiny bit of one treat at a time. Thanks Darcy, and your dad's dog is adorable. My dad moved in with me after my mom passed away and looking back it was one of the sweetest times in my life. I've been watching your channel for a couple years. I bought my dehydrator at Menards for around $35. I have used it a ton and I love it. I have your book "Dehydrating Basics & Journal for Beginners"....I've dehydrated a bunch and even powdered some tomatoes. I love it.........easy and space saving! You are the best! Blessings to you and your family!
I'd you do the cooked version. They will be a little softer, but not chewy. You can leave them on the counter to soften up some, but always store in the fridge since they won't be completely dry
@@ThePurposefulPantry Thank you Darcy!
I 💖 Shelbie! What a cutiepie!
Thank you so much, my baby was diagnosed with diabetes 3 years ago and I make her food weekly because I just don't trust anything bought anymore, she can't have treats anymore but I went out and bought a food dehydrator so I can make her chicken jerky without any additives at least I know she's eating if I do it myself, anything she gets is made by me only and now she can have a healthy treat too ....I want to try carrots but make them more like a jerky and not to crunchy can you offer any tips please..I'm pretty new at using a dehydrator, thank you
Any vegetables that aren't fully dried should be kept in the fridge/freezer so that they don't mold. You can leave it a little chewy - but it has to be stored in refrigeration.
@@ThePurposefulPantry OK thank you for the response
4/14/24: Hi Darcy. I'm a first timer and newly subscribed to your channel and I loved your presentation. I learned a few things and I know I'll be saving some money as well by making these treats for my two multi-Poo pups, sisters, who just turned 7 on 3/23! Once a month I make their ground turkey/lean beef and liver kibbles with veggies and brown rice that they love, so I'm going to get busy making both the chicken and sweet potato treats tomorrow. I love to have a variety of homemade everything for them. It just so happens I have the Herb Ox I got from Amazon (couldn't find it in stores, hmm...) so I'm prepared. Thank you for sharing your video. I appreciate and enjoyed it very much.
You are the best. 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾 the raw natural and real content is always appreciated !
Wonderful. You’re a sweetie, Darci! Woof to Shelby 🐶
I love the Soylent Green reference! great video! Im going to use this with my babies. thank you!!
I absolutely LOVE the mesh tea ball to sprinkle spices!
I have made and eaten a lot of cjicken jerky but never heard that I should cook it first. I'm hoping you have a video about how to do this because I have chicken sliced in the frig waiting to be dehydrated tomorrow. Thanks for these great ideas!
Safe food handling recommends it. But you can also put it into an oven at 250F to blast for about 15 min to get rid of any bacterial issues. Dehydrators don't always heat to a consistent 160F, which is where the concern comes -thus the recommendation.
Great treats made from scratch just how I like it
And so as my dog !
My dog just loves the sweet potatoes cooked but not needing to dry
Shelby, if you don't have meat or chicken, what vegetarian recipes have you seen that are healthy for my pets ?
I bought several bottles of oriental fish sauce a few months back to encourage my cats and my pit bull Mosh to eat nutritious things I make for them that they sort of turn their noses up at.
Couple drops of the stinky fish sauce and they think it's wonderful..hahaha.
I'd like to make veggie treats using the fish sauce, but realize I'll need to keep them in glass jars so I don't have to smell them !
Ps..fish sauce is cheap.
Fish sauce is not vegetarian? Shelby says she doesn't understand what it means to not eat meat :D The sweet potatoes would work if you do a veg broth instead of chicken broth, but they can be hit or miss with dogs. Look at peanut butter treats that are all over the internet.
@@ThePurposefulPantry I'm not vegetarian either.. lol
I said vegetarian because slot of the time I only have vegetables, rice, etc on hand.
No... My favorite meat is a big porterhouse.
@@carolyn9444
While dogs are omnivores, cats are obligate carnivores.
They have very little need for plant matter, and little ability to digest it properly.
@@carolyn9444 grow your kitties some wheatgrass. That's the only veg they'll appreciate. Cheap too.
Our dog is allergic to chicken so we buy Turkey Leg and slice and dehydrate them she loves them
I love all of your tips and tricks, best of all is you show us how you get out of your mistakes without waste. I have only just found your channel and I love it.
I made some beef flavoured cabbage leaves in my dehydrator and put too much salt by mistake. I am going to make powder to use instead of plain salt for my seasoning.
Thank you for such great video's. Love from the UK. xxx
That's a great no-waste save!!
Briliant love the treats for the dog from Australia.
We have a butchery in south africa and we make chicken BILTONG a lot...no bacteria bothering us ❤ we use vinegar and salt..so its perfect our forefathers also did this. Xx
That stuff is the curing medium, that's why ;)
Great video… I also place a bad of the little packs that we find on the tortillas wrap, so remove the humidity
Great info and demonstration thanks❤
How wonderful. I have 3 dogs. Very healthy😊
i feed mine what ever is in those yellow bags, they like it and so far no bad effects, the vet even said its ok.
Thank you for this recipe, I have a 7 month old cavoodle I named Tilly and a 5 month old cavoodle named Bentley and I've been looking for some homemade dog treat/food because I can control what goes into it.😊
Love the dehydrated dog treat videos will watch more of your channel it’s obvious you love dogs, I am making these for sure, they are soo expensive in the store
I make liver biscottie for my dog. Use turnip garlic and carrot. Whole wheat flour only.
Mine won't touch sweet potatoes(or veggies in most recognizable form) but I've been doing chicken for years and have some to process today. That or any organ meats he loves.
that;s pretty cool my dogs are very picky eaters
"Human jerky" lol that was a good one 😊 Love your videos, thank you !
Thanks for watching!
Hello Darcy! This question is not about the dog treats, but about the DH Trays. The "book" says to "avoid scratching" the DH to put the trays in "smooth side" down. I wasn't too positive about which side they were talking about, but I see that you are loading the trays with the "lip" side down and the mesh side up. Is that what they meant? It made more sense to me to so it the other way since that gives you an "edge" to push your food against and contain it from spilling over, but perhaps my thinking is not correct. Can you confirm the correct direction of the trays? for me?
Think of the trays with rails - the rails go into the grooves of the machine, not the side that has the mesh.
Love the Tea Strainer idea!!!
Your Shelby looks just like our Layla!!
love homemade doggie treats for our puppier. thanks for all the great info!
I made my dogs food also.
Just subscribed-tried sweet potatoes w/o success- will try your chicken broth. Annie & Herbie send praise your way. Elizabeth
Try using a mandolin slicer for the sweet potatoes.
Awesome! Just subscribed and a new dehydrator. Hope to save for a harvest someday 😂
fantastic, healthy, fun and cheap
Thank you great video
Wow that is so awesome, I just got a bag of these 2 ingredients yesterday and our dog loved them but they are pretty expensive! I don’t have a dehumidifier so can I air fry?? Thanks for the video
Dehydrator is what you mean, and if your air fryer has a dehydrating function, yes. Otherwise, you're just cooking them - which your pup may love anyway.
I love watching you.
"No we're not doing Soylent Green here." 🤣🤣🤣 Had to replay... did I hear that right? Too funny.
Human jerky, hmm? That was funny. Thanks, Darcy. I'm going to try both the chicken and the sweet potato. Treats are very expensive and who knows what's really in them, right?
My dog loves some treats from swanson vitamins called 'brewer's yeast formula'. The milk bones I have been feeding her are getting difficult to find so I am looking for alternatives. I have some of the non-fortified brewers yeast and think I might try to make this with some of the yeast in it.
Great...another use for the tea strainer!!@ I've been wondering if I could do raw chicken or meats ...thank you for the info. Would welcome any other ideas for the pups as you develop them!❤
Awesome! Thanks
Awesome, Love it!!
Oh Darcy, I have just found you and I just dearly love you thank you so much for your videos. I just wondered if there was any difference in the one that you cooked and one that was raw as to which one she preferred or if she even made a difference
For the sweet potatoes? She prefers cooked, but she'd much rather have the chicken altogether.
Nice
Thanks!
Brilliant!
🐝 Thanks for the great video 🌻 Thanksyouuuwwww
Shelby looks like an Australian Shepherd
We do pig ears.. I cut them into smaller bits (med size dogs) run the Cosori at 165 for 24hrs and the dog loves them.. No additives needed.
Love it!!!
OMG 'not making Soylent Green' wow flash back to 1973.
I was wondering, if I cook the chicken in the oven at 350 degrees just until done and then slice into thin pieces and dehydrate until completely dry will that decrease or even kill off the harmful germs? I saw another channel who said to "flash heat" chicken and any meats that might contain harmful germs for just a few minutes at the end of dehydration to kill germs and/or harmful bacteria. I am new to dehydrating and have no clue if this would work or not. What are your thoughts on this? Don't worry, I am not going to hold anyone accountable for my dog's health but myself. I am just curious as too whether or not cooked chicken dehydrated would be palatable. I am thinking my dog would like her treats prepared this way.
Yep - it's what I said, too - 250F oven for 10-15 min after will do the same thing. I prefer it to cooking at 350 because that can dry out the meat in not a good way. But some of the safer dehydrating tips from the safe preservation NCHFP recommend cooking first. It's up to you.
It's actually not your dog's health that is the issue - their gut is different than ours. You are the one handling the meat - so doing that flash at the end is protecting you, not your pup.
If you were a dog, which would you prefer?
Both. The answer is both.
I just opened up my first dehydrator, threw in some thin straps of beef and pork for my pup. The recipe book says 6hrs or until done but I have one question.if it's not dry tonight before bed can put it back in in the morning to dry more? Do I put it in the fridge over night?
I guess that was 2 questions 😅
Yes, put it in the fridge overnight and restart tomorrow.
@@ThePurposefulPantry ty!
How about using raw chicken and my canned sweet potato, run both thru a meat grinder then use a jerkey gun to dehydrate?? Thoughts...
Sure.

My husband prepared duck for Thanksgiving and I was hoping to turn the leftovers into treats for the dog. (The duck was undersalted.) Any advice?
It's a very fatty meat, so be prepared to slice it thin and use some paper towels to soak it up. Store it in the freezer and let that day's treats thaw a bit before giving to your pup.
Lucky doggie!
What kind of knife are you using
A JA Henckels meat cleaver
Thanks
Do I need to put them on the plastic mesh mat? or can I put it directly on the rack?
I prefer to always use the mesh because it's easier to pull things off and easier to clean than the racks. You can do what you choose.
