    Before I bought my Corsori dehydrator, I used an old Westinghouse round dehydrator that I bought many years ago.
    It didn't have a heat source that I could find. I learned to put my empty trays on the bottom to protect the food from getting over browned. I mostly dried paste tomatoes. Now I dry a lot of frozen mixed vegetables for us and our dogs. They like the crunchy green beans.

    If I've mentioned this before on one of your posts, I apologize, but I think it bears repeating. One thing that happened with my vacuum sealed jars that I was not expecting at all happened when we had a tornado pass our house and I'm talking very close to our house. There was no damage, but it was within several 100 yards of our house. I don't even know if it actually touched the ground, but it was incredibly loud. I was checking doors and windows and concerned that they were going to pop out. As I got close to my pantry, I could hear ping after ping. My heart sank. Jars were unsealing. That was scary! After everything was over, I started checking jars. No conventionally canned jars lost their seal. And for some mystifying reason, only about 15 half gallon and gallon jars setting on the concrete floor unsealed. Other vacuum sealed jars setting only a couple feet higher and all the way to the top shelves didn't unseal. I sealed them back and counted my blessings.

      If rings were on them, it wouldn't have mattered anyway ;) Yes, that huge pressure shift can do things, but the jars still would have been airtight with the lids. You would have been fine for the vacuum sealed jars.

    Hi, Darcy. Glad you are feeling better. Keep healing! This message is in response to an earlier video of yours. You asked what we were using our dehydrated foods for. Using...using? I've been dehydrating them for storage, what if scenarios....all exxept mostly just onions. Then the epiphany came!!!!! Hey! I can use these and replace them!!!! Better than that....i can use some to learn HOW to use them...hahahaha. Soooooo.... i made a scrumptious kielbasa potato soup. My fridge carrots were no longer an option. Sooooo....i grabbed the dehydrated carrots i'd never used and my trusty onions. Hey!!!!!! I soaked the carrots for about 10 or 15 minutes in a little hot water and then tossed them into the soup. Guess what!!! (Oh, you already guessed! : ) they were just like "real" carrots!!!! I was so happily amazed! Watch out dehydrated corn; i think you're next : ) i cannot be alone in this : ) Darcy, THANK YOU!!!!

    For your book shelf pantry, you could measure the width, depth and height of the shelves and cut cardboard to that size, bend it for the height of the shelf, slide it on top of the jars so that the front covers the opening. The shelves will be protected from light. As a bonus, you could put a list of the shelves contents on the front of the cardboard.

    So I discovered another reason for keeping the rings on.
    I had put 6 pks of Lorna Doone cookies in a mason jar and vacuum sealed it without adding the ring.
    I went to get into my delicious cookies later on and nothing looked amiss.
    But, the seal failed, still, everything looked okay.
    Upon closer inspection there was only empty wrappers in the jar.
    I believe the really fat mouse my cat caught, was the culprit behind the missing treats.
    If I had only added the ring!

    Similar to the recommendation in another comment, to block light, obtain a tension rod (spring type curtain rod) which is sized for the inside of top shelf. Use curtain or sheet , slide on tension rod, allow to drape over all shelves. If that would retain too much heat within the shelves, you could put a normal curtain rod on the outside edge of top shelf which shelf.... that should hold the covering away a couple inches to allow for more air circulation. You can also do each shelf independently.
    Happy to see your videos. Hope your health is improving daily.

    I gotta admit - my being a Newb has me nervous. My first raw egg drying - the only sticking I see (after powderizing) is in the corners of the bottom of the jar. I don't have anything that sucks the air out - but did toss in a Moisture Absorber. And I'm not really sure how long this will store in a regular, clean jelly jar. I dried the eggs for 14 to 15 hours.

    • @ThePurposefulPantry
      @ThePurposefulPantry  24 дня назад

      The date means nothing...it can last for years after the 'best by' date which is more for store rotation than for you. ruclips.net/video/hzjBdyr52iw/видео.htmlsi=TOXVUimMkJn2NsWZ
      But yes, you can dehydrate them. They don't all turn out great, and I wouldn't use them as dishes on their own, but incorporated into other things.

    • @wandabaquedano2451
      @wandabaquedano2451 24 дня назад

      The date on canned goods means nothing. If properly stored, they should last 2 to 5 years from that date. Manufacturers are required to put a 'best buy' date, which is usually about a year from production.
