I am so lucky I had such a good guide who was able to help me - this was serious, it could have been much worse. Thank you to Experience Tibet for their amazing trip, and incredible guidance - you will have an incredible trip if you book with them, and if things go wrong for you like me, you will be looked after by the very best - www.experiencetibet.org
Sorry that there is so much heavy breathing in this - I am embarrassed enough already, but it is important to share the ups and downs. My body could not handle the altitude - my skin even dried out. I live at 0m altitude, my home town is on the beach in Australia, I am not built for this - I am still dealing with the dried out lips and skin issues now, and its been a few weeks. Thanks for supporting :)

It is a very effective measure for China government to arrange for foreigners to be accompanied by a tour guide.
The living environment at high altitude is one aspect. On the other hand, it is to avoid offending Tibetan beliefs and customs. For example, a few years ago, foreign tourists rode Tibet and cleaned their bicycles in Mabian Yongcuo. There are even camping on the Tibetan celestial burial platform.

This is the main reason why the government forces foreigners to hire tour guides when entering Tibet. In addition to cultural differences that can easily lead to misunderstandings, altitude sickness, dangerous road conditions, and poor travel conditions may endanger tourists' lives.

@@wheres.michael Generally speaking, it is correct, but the locals have no communication barriers, it is more convenient than foreigners in terms of documents, medical care, accommodation, etc., and they do not need to rely on guides to solve problems. The oxygen content in Tibet is very low, only one-third of normal life, so your body cannot adapt. So in the past, foreign tourists from China had to find a travel agency to register for Tibet. The Chinese government did not say that it is too dangerous to stop you from going. We Chinese, not Tibetans, are all dangerous. In Tibet, pulmonary edema caused by a cold can be fatal. Traveling is good, but the premise is safety.

I went to Tibet in 1996. Everything was very primitive then. People were more simple and friendly as they are now. But for ordinary Chinese people like us who don't know Tibetan culture, the feeling should be the same as yours in Lhasa now. My other feeling is that women and men living in the plains may have different lung capacities. Women have much weaker altitude sickness than men. Women can adapt more easily to the altitude of 3,900 meters in Lhasa. Male bloggers are big and will feel the altitude sickness more strongly. I hope you can overcome the altitude sickness as soon as possible and feel the local conditions and magnificent scenery of Tibet happily! Bless you!

You must keep warm on the plateau and reduce heat loss as much as possible. Otherwise, the body must speed up metabolism to provide more heat to maintain body temperature, but this will also consume more oxygen. This may be one of the reasons why Michael continues to suffer from altitude sickness.

Taking vitamin E supplement may help with blood oxygen level because it is the thing responsible for holding oxygen in the blood. There is a medical term called Vitamin E deficient anemia, which is blood lacking vitamin E, that is how much vitamin E is important to oxygen content in a person. Vitamin E is known to improve heart function. This is only my theory, I have never experimented with it myself or know anyone tried it.
Another thing is to wear a smartwatch that can monitor the blood oxygen level, it gives warning when blood oxygen reaches a certain level before it becomes critical, that gives you time to get more oxygen before your blood oxygen level becomes critically low.
There are portable battery operated oxygen generator, you can wear it all the time while walking or hiking, it's a good investment if you need supplemental oxygen a lot.

In the past, Tibet allowed foreigners to travel freely, and many foreigners lost their lives in Tibet. The first reason is that not enough attention was paid to altitude sickness, which can kill you within 48 hours. The second reason is that there are many uninhabited areas in Tibet, and many foreigners got lost after entering and could not save themselves. The third reason is that Tibet is a military sensitive area, especially in the border areas where many military restricted areas have been set up. Many foreigners entered without permission, which caused headaches for the military. Foreigners can freely travel to the Tibetan areas of Sichuan and Yunnan, and can also travel freely to Xinjiang. But they must join a tour group to enter Tibet.

In my experience, Michael's condition is very bad, even dangerous. Stop talking while walking. If possible, immediately evacuate to a low-altitude area, such as Linzhi area in Tibet, and return after calming down. I think Michael is now supported by a kind of excitement about unknown areas, but this is definitely not a reassuring state. I observed Michael's face, lips, and body movements. Sometimes, danger comes suddenly, and even the person himself is not aware of it.

Now you know the importance of having a tour guide in china’s Xizang . If you go there for the first time and don’t know the dangers of altitude sickness, you will really die. The Chinese government considers the safety of its people, whether you are a foreigner or a Chinese. , life safety is equally important

Did you wash hair and take shower on the, first night of arrival?? Just walk and do everything slow and easy, do not rush or do things vigorously. Don't be too active. Walking step by step. Drink their salty yak butter milk tea and 糌粑 or the breakfast made of big barley flour. It helps.
