Michael is a shy bloke, but connecting with people is what travel's all about. Don't be bashful. When you need a hand, just ask boldly. Like when you encounter a menu in a language you can't understand... you'll get a whole different travel experience. Plus, chatting with folks might even spice up your videos. Good luck!

It is common sense that all Chinese people know: food stores or snack shops in train stations are a little more expensive than those outside. If time permits and you want to save money, you can buy snacks at a supermarket outside and eat your meal outside before going to the train station.

I just took the train from Zhuhai to Guangzhou a month ago and it was super convenient. That route isn't even the highest speed and is only 250km/h
Within the right distance, HSR is way better then airplane. More comfortable, more spacious, easier to stretch your body, better window view, feel less spatially enclosed, better sense of control (e.g. you can get off the train at any next stop if you really want to), less boarding time needed, etc.

I am Chinese, and I would like to share my personal experience about queuing and politeness. About ten years ago, I took a bus in the countryside. There was no queuing at all, so everyone squeezed to one door at the same time. If you couldn't squeeze in, the rest of you had to wait for the next bus, which was an hour later. Everyone was like a beast, because resources were limited, so everyone could only take care of themselves.
Although it is much better now, as long as everyone pays, they will be guaranteed a seat, but the fear of "limited resources" still leaves a mark in people's hearts. There are 1.4 billion people in China. When life is difficult, there is really no quality or politeness to speak of.

Haha, by the way, a little advice for tourists coming to China: before getting on the high-speed rail, it is best to buy some water and food at the convenience store outside the high-speed rail station. The food on the high-speed rail is usually much more expensive because the food in the high-speed rail station has additional store rental and transportation costs.

The high-speed train starting with G has a speed of 350km/h. Your high-speed train is an ordinary CRH EMU, and the speed is generally 310km/h ish

@@wheres.michaelas a Chinese person I’d agree too. Contrary to many opinions where if you criticize a country in your travel vlogs then you are not welcomed, in China if you are offering constructive ideas that ultimately lead to finding better solutions we won’t take that as simply offensive. Especially how you just framed it, not with arrogance but with respect to things (cultures) you probably don’t fully understand, I believe most Chinese people would also agree with you. Taking care of those in help in the society is definitely what Chinese society takes much effort to raise awareness of. Like said 40 years ago we were one of the poorest countries worse than North Korea pre capita. So there’s still a long way to go. I just wanna express my appreciation to you that you mentioned this situation with respect. Hopefully China as a society moves toward a much better caring one soon. And I’ll be really glad if you could witness that happen in the future❤

lower tier cities will usually have drivers trying to get your business. if you know roughly the price(ie checking with didi first), it's fine just to use one of the locals. once you agree on a price you are fine, you won't get scammed. if it's a taxi just make sure the meter is on if you haven't agreed on a price. with didi, all of this really isn't necessary but there are still local chinese who use these services. also it's likely you did not get scammed in shanghai. first it's more expensive in general and if you got a lift during the night when normal public transport options are closed, it will be more. I don't remember how much you paid but say $40-50 in the middle of the night is not uncommon. didi prices also adjust depending on hour due to availability. if you feel like you are getting scammed and 'forced' to pay, take out your camera and start recording. find a local police which shouldn't be too hard. when xi took office a decade ago, one of his primary missions was to clean up corruption at all levels so a lot of things that might have occurred 20 years ago just doesn't happen now like scams, petty thief, to government level 'bureaucracy' that required cash under the table to get anything done fast.

Interestingly during the Beijing to Hohhot route the train (the latest Fuxing) didn't travel up to the full (safe) speed of 340 km/hr, which happened quite frequently from HK to BJ. Looking out the window heading to Hohhot you can sort of guess why...we passed by several nuclear power plants.

To wait in line in city (large population) is really hard for some ppl. They just won’t stop cut in. But not all ppl are like this. Gen z are better🤣

The coldness in temperature may due to the altitude rise geologically from Guangzhou (the delta area) to Kunming (the plateau).

If you miss a high-speed train in China, you can transfer to the next high-speed train that day for free

Sorry about that. As regards lining-up culture in China, it's generally much better in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan than in the Mainland of China. Yet the Mainland has improved quite a bit and I 'm confident it'll improve further over time.

It’s actually a recovering split lip. Sucks to be you though, it’s going to get much worse in the next few videos as I end up at like 4000m altitude which dries you out even more

The Chinese government is friendly to foreigners, just high-handed to Chinese. So it's normal for you guys to see the good side. The recent increase in the price of high-speed rail tickets has caused many people with poor incomes to give up traveling by high-speed rail mode. There is a big gap between the rich and the poor in China

Those people in the train station say: do you want taxi? Normally it is cheaper, like uber or private driver. The price can be negotiable. Nothing to worry about.

    • @wheres.michael
      @wheres.michael  25 дней назад

I don’t want a private taxi - the issue isn’t about how much or if it’s safe, it’s that we’re not respected when we say “no”

@@wheres.michaelthe unfortunate thing being that once you make an interaction by responding in any form any way, those “illegal” (yup technically they are not allowed to do that but hard to regulate 24/7) drivers would take it as a sign that may open up a chance for deal. My way is to do a poker face and simply ignore their saying by all means. Sometimes I might pretend Im using my Didi app searching for my didi car. Once they realize you are already in the process of waiting for you didi then they just lose hope. It’s really disrespectful for sure. But they do it to make a living. It’s just different stances and they are willing to put making money above dignity and politeness I guess.

@@wheres.michael You are correct. Don't take the private taxi. Probability is high you get ripped off. Always use the app.

Don't take a private taxi. Just use Didi, or take the subway, or queue up at the station to get a taxi. There is no need to interact with these private taxis.
