This book is a treasure. I used it with my children monthly in our home education days. We would sit under the trees and draw what we had collected from a walk or pictures taken. We would look things up in a field guide in order to label them. They are grown now. I miss those days. You have inspired me to dig out my old nature journal and take it up again. There is a movie made about her life with the same title. It was inspiring to watch.

I enjoy how open you are to becoming involved with your “total” personhood! You squeeze so much into, what appears, to be a pleasant, peaceful and grateful life. I am, at 69, realizing that it would refresh my life & attitude to release more of the past and embrace the future in new ways! I bought myself a narrow, hard-covered book titled: “The Backyard Bird Sanctuary, a Beginner’s Guide to Creating a Wild Bird Habitat at Home.” My condo is on the ground floor so my patio is down a tiny knoll from a tiny garden and 2 shepherds hooks, ready for hanging flowers and bird feeders! ❤ Our temps at night, here in NorthEast USA (yes, Jennifer, opposite coasts!) finally stopped dropping into freezing digits! Long note to thank you for being one of my favorites on RUclips ❤ Your videos & newsletters inspire & encourage🙏🏻🌷💕 PS: Your outfits were 🥰 lovely and SO YOU!

Last friday i took my kids nature journaling at a local park. I was fascinated by the many mud nests we saw attached to the side of the nature center there. I figured they were made by the swallows we saw diving over the pond. I was surprised and a little amused to see that a couple of house sparrows had decided to "borrow" one of the mud nests for their own and were busily packing one of the mud nests full of grass and other vegetation. I had to draw a little ink drawing of it in my sketch book. It isn't a fine work of art, but it was something I made in the moment and will help me to remember it later on.

Love that book, it’s one I go back to year after year. I love her combination of art, poetry and musings - her summer trip to Scotland is near where I say so that makes it extra interesting. It became really popular in the 80s when it was reproduced in calendars, notelets, etc… and I’ve loved it ever since

I have enjoyed the Country Diary journal since the 1980's. So happy you are too. I usually pull it out this time of year when all is beginning to bloom and grow. Some of our flowers in Spring, here in Illinois, are ephemerals, so this year I am picking some and pressing into my journal with notes of when they bloomed.
Your roses are beautiful! I feel like I can almost smell them!

What you said about your sister and art is exactly what I did as a child. My sister is a very gifted artist so I always labeled that as her thing. My grandpa was a watercolor painter and he would give her lessons when he visited but I never joined in even though I wanted to because I wasn’t the painter. A few years ago as an adult I realized I could learn how to paint even if I wasn’t a natural at it so I started learning watercolors. I regret that I missed the chance to learn from my grandpa while he was still with us, but I’m enjoying learning now.

My mother lived in NY and bought the Country Diary book at Rizzoli when it first came out. She died in 2002, and I still have her copy, which I cherish. At one time I owned a DVD of Edith’s nature writings based on the book, which was visually beautiful with lovely accompanying music. I don’t know if it was ever made available on CD, or one of the streaming platforms. If you can find it, it is well worth viewing. Thanks for a lovely video.

It's always a surprise that I look forward to, and seeing what new treasures and wisdom you have to share with us. This video was so enjoyable. I have been wanting to get some water colors for the longest but didn't think I would have the talent but this was just the push I needed. I had the sweetest thing happen yesterday which you don't see often anymore but a little neighbor girl brought me a personally made May day basket. Dear Jennifer, my three little girls and I just had you over for tea time… a delicious sourdough carrot cake with various warm drinks on a rainy NC afternoon. Our table was set with beeswax candles, Rosenthal “Sanssouci” white China and a low bouquet of pink roses. My phone was held up by a book of nature poetry, several nature guides and… “The Secret Garden”… which we will now proceed to read a chapter in. My youngest would like you to know that we have the Connoisseur Kids book and they are all sitting and eating in a very Connoisseur Kiddish way (a phrase that often bounds around the house!) thank you for this wonderfully relaxing video! But the last few years i've noticed that i spend less and less time with friends, possibly do to the fact that i had to end a few friendships, but now did i become too comfortable being alone a-lot? I am married and two cats haha! Any advice on how to have balance and possibly still hang out with other individuals? I guess what scares me a bit that i don't try much anymore to go out and meet new people xoxo

Church? Voluntary Work? Evening Class? Local WI? Exercise or dancing classes?
I like spending time at home and for me, over the years, friends come and go as we move around and so do others. Covid didn't help.

Did you realise your first outfit shown is a touch Edwardian?
A while ago I looked up what Edwardian fashion was and apparently the most popular look was a long, plain skirt and white blouse. You will see this in many photos of the era. The reason for the fashion for a white blouse was that it signalled the lady was wealthy. White clothes stain quickly and are seen as a bit impractical. However, a wealthy lady could afford to wear her blouse just once and have her maids wash it to get the stains out, starch and iron it so it looked pristine again.
It is interesting that you are drawn to white clothes, such as white dresses.
They do look lovely and of course today we have washing machines which, living over 100 years ago, Edwardian ladies didn't have.
My Mum had that book - The diary of an Edwardian Lady. I think it was published in the 70's and was always on the bookshelf in our home when I was a child. There also used to be spin-off items such as note-cards and writing sets, diaries, tea-cosies and tea towels etc.
I too like water colour painting. For me it is all about spending time in nature, slowing down and really looking, you do see a lot more than what you initially see. The best thing is, when I look at my paintings years later, I am immediately transported back to the place where I was sitting and remember how I felt, what I saw, what the weather was like etc. My favourite painting was done when we were driving past a field of bright red poppies and I asked my husband to stop the car so I could paint it. I had my paints on me. We sat for a while and then we noticed some ears popping up above the tall grasses. Then bodies emerged - a herd of deer that came quite close to us - magical,
Enjoy painting, as you know, t is not about how good you are, but enjoying being out in nature and observing and enjoying it.
Last night, for the first time this year, here in the UK, it was finally warm enough for me to sit out on my balcony and I enjoyed it, with a glass of wine and watched all the different types of birds fly by. We live next to a nature reserve on an estuary so we have an abundance of birdlife - woodland birds and water fowl. The highlight was a large heron flying past.
    Enjoy.

The scene at 4:10 is so pretty. I fully expected Peter Rabbit himself to make an appearance! I guess I was getting Beatrix Potter vibes. 😁🐇🌳🎨 This video inspired me to get out my book, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain (which was gifted to me by my artist sister, who says anyone can draw but I’ve never been convinced of that in myself either!) Thank you for your example and sharing the beauty. 💛

Jennifer..one thing I’d love your recommendation on is where to find “real” 100% cotton hankies with beautiful embroidery. I ordered some from Amazon and sent them back because even though it said cotton it was polyester. Stiff and really slick feeling..horrible! My Grandmother would give me beautiful handkerchiefs as a little girl..wish I still had them.

I’m correcting my previous comment - Country Diary was filmed for VHS (videocassette) format years ago. I don’t know if it ever was ever transferred to DVD. What I had was the videocassette. 😊

I'm a perfectionist (unfortunately) and it has always made me think, despite a bit of natural talent, that I am not yet an artist as I don't consider my work to be as good as I know I can be and certainlynot as good as "real" artists. I am so critical of myself! It also makes me fear doing anything because I'm "not good at it." I am trying so hard to claim the title of artist for myself, but I'm not all the way there yet! Thank you for a little point in a better direction. ❤

Just start - and treat each new endevour as a practice run / experiment. Before you know it, you will both improve and via experimenting will find your own style. Get going and see where it takes you.
