I've messed around with Windows on Steam Deck a few times and it's just not it for me. If I want to play any games that aren't compatible on the Deck or I want to play them and get better fidelity/battery life I just stream them from my PC through Moonlight. I'm also perfectly fine with streaming gamepass games through XCloud, I've got a 1Gb connection and have never had any real issues. It's great there are options for others to go Windows though, that's why the Steam Deck is so cool.
So do you lose all the performance settings like fps lock, refresh rate and performance overlays when using windows or is there another deck/windows program to add them? I am really impressed with the Steam Deck OS, what it can do and how it implements things is nothing short of impressive and there is loads of apps in the linux desktop mode.. but.. having to switch between desk top and Deck OS to do some fixes and utilities get a bit old and having very mixed results when getting other game platforms to work is just crap (Ubisoft anyone?)... I patch a lot of these issues by rebuying games through Steam when they are on sale but it's not ideal... Windows just does it all but you then lose some of the things that makes the Deck great and introduce other issues that require work arounds. I think i will try a windows install on a hard drive and road test it..
Yes you do. But they have tweaks you can install to regain them back but of course, it won’t be as easy to use as having it native in your OS with SteamOS

ive been using SD Windows 11 for quiet a while, followed through all the steps and has been good until recently. i noticed that if my SteamDeck is put into sleep mode, nowadays it can wakeup by itself automatically inside the case. i tried so many configuration to disable this via powercfg, disable network wakeup, registry edit but to no avail still. im not sure where did i go wrong this time. i have reformatted the SteamDeck for several times but still have this random wake up issues.
two thing i was able to get windows to work on my steam deck but it only works for a few minutes until it shuts down and yes the battery is fully charged and i cant get the full storge to show on the steam deck please help
Pretty much the same performance as SteamOS (though some very few games run slightly better on Windows) and pretty much the same battery wise. Unless you're using processes like discord.. it will last a bit longer than SteamOS.
You can always buy a bluethooth mouse/keyboard that way you dont have to worry about pluggin in things. If you just want a cheap fix you can alwyas get a USB HUB with USB(C) connection.

Sad fact, one of my first smart phones was a Nokia Lumia when they partnered with Microsoft for the 8 mobile. It's the same story as the Zune; they simply got in a little too late to matter when BlackBerry, Android, and Apple were trying to beat each other already
@@josephking6251 I started with a HTC HD2 which run Windows Mobile 6.5 with a HTC Sense UI. I have my one set up with 1 terabyte SSD and a 512 Gb SD card wiith steam OS but I am going to get another 1 or 2 terabyte SSD and install windows 11 on that. And at least that way I don't have to delete everything and can switch between the two If I like. Kinda expensive that way but then if I do like Windows and want to. I can buy an enclosure for one of the drives and use it as an external SSD like I did on my PC when I upgraded one of my two 1 terabyte Nvme drives with a 2 terabyte one. So now have a 1 terabyte SSD in an enclosure to move stuff between my PC and steam deck. Although I use Filezilla for that. But I can run games off the external SSD too. I will install Windeck OS though myself that preserves all the Steam deck gaming mode still but runs off windows 11 instead. Perfect.
I Use a M.2SSD to load windows 10 on the deck it works great just like a regular PC I play WWE2K on it ans the 22 Works great Kinda worried about 23 tho
So installing Windows on it pretty much makes it a ROG Ally? I have an Ally now and love being able to install anything but may return and get Deck on sale, upgraded SSD and install W11 just for emulation goodness like Teknoparrot and the such.

I've still been going back and forth on if I put Windows on my Deck. I like it's performance with Linux and Steam OS and I did setup Geforce NOW and Game Pass Streaming to work through the Browser and properly recognize the controls. But there are still some games that won't work unless I have Windows installed. I've got an Aya Neo 4500u which I use for those games fortunately but I can feel it's performance on newer games not being quite as good as the Deck, and I suspect that's related to the Windows overhead.
I had some concerns that my performance was going to suffer by going to Windows, but it's honestly not been a problem so far. For instance, Horizon runs pretty much exactly as well before.
hi when i opening my steamdeck win 11 os its stuck on black screen and the fan noisy is loud i need to power it off on power button then open it again to boot up thanks
Hey, on W11 the Controller of SDT is always updating (the icon is always little bit blinking). Many times i have no controller connection when i restart the system... i have reinstalled everything even Windows itself - same result everytime..... 🤷♂️
I'm kind of interested in switching to windows for compatibility but idk if it's worth it. I mean the whole steam input for controls is a game changer for portable pcs it makes it so the controls work with almost everything even straight mouse and keyboard games. I like steam os is just the compatibility that kind of hurts it for because it won't run everything some things require alot of tweaking others won't work at all.
I also don't think thats a smart thing to do, and I don't think u can revert back if you do that. I think I will be waiting for valve to release dual booting officially sometime next year(hopefully).

I'm still waiting for windows 10/11 on Xbox series consoles
The Xbox series s/x already run on a modified windows 10 OS.
@@raf9826 yeah , but you can't run windows software and PC games as in a full windows version
Really hope Destiny 2 might work through windows
Got win11 pro installed on the deck on microsim and using daul boot. Do not go with the latest Windows 11 build. As the steamdeck Windows drivers are not up to date yet for this. You will have sound issues and not be able to play fortnite as drivers are not available yet
I used Win11 on Steam deck last year for a few months and ultimately wen't back to SteamOS...it's way better.
Going to depend on your use case, all subjective. I like having access to all my apps/games, not some of them lol
I just bought mine just waiting on it
amazing review
Wait sleep mode works for games? Ok this is tempting now.
Just make sure you turn off hibernation and it's fine. Just like on your desktop.
Use it with a hard drive with windows on a as card and it becomes really viable.
there's just so many things i hate about Steam OS.. i hate the file structure, i hate the shader cache, i hate the way gaming mode hides the menu bar in emulators and the way it handles software with multiple windows.. it's just got a level of jankiness that i find too annoying
Hey Shane I want to buy the steam deck which version do you recommend buying? The 399 version , 529 version, or the 649 version?
399 if you can replace ssd
529 if you happy to use sd cards
649 if you dont want sd cards or ssd update
I bought the 64GB version at launch and it's been fine for me installing games on the SD Card. It's a bit slower to load heavy games, but not a big deal. You can also replace the SSD relatively easy.
@@scaryifliteral awesome thanks for the replay . I was leaning towards the 64gb and just buying a bigger SD.
Awesome 🫡
I was able to use gamepass in the standard steamos linux downloading firefox and using the web browser version of gamepass
How is the performance? Are the games running worse when Windows is installed than on Linux?
ive been using SD Windows 11 for quiet a while, followed through all the steps and has been good until recently. i noticed that if my SteamDeck is put into sleep mode, nowadays it can wakeup by itself automatically inside the case. i tried so many configuration to disable this via powercfg, disable network wakeup, registry edit but to no avail still. im not sure where did i go wrong this time. i have reformatted the SteamDeck for several times but still have this random wake up issues.
Ive been using xbox beta for playing xbox on steam Resolution isnt that good but works
two thing i was able to get windows to work on my steam deck but it only works for a few minutes until it shuts down and yes the battery is fully charged and i cant get the full storge to show on the steam deck please help
Are there any info about updating amd drivers ?
Pretty much the same performance as SteamOS (though some very few games run slightly better on Windows) and pretty much the same battery wise. Unless you're using processes like discord.. it will last a bit longer than SteamOS.
hello i dont know if you know but is steam deck win10 or 11 is better for gaming ? i already have win 10 but thinking of upgrading to 11
Do you need a dock for mose and keyboard, or you can rock with the touchpads and touch keyboard when you fresh install?
You don't need mouse and keyboard, but it makes things less annoying
You can always buy a bluethooth mouse/keyboard that way you dont have to worry about pluggin in things. If you just want a cheap fix you can alwyas get a USB HUB with USB(C) connection.
Hey everyone! I'm planning to buy the 64gb version with a 512 sd card. I mainly play indies and 2D games but I heard there is some issues with shader caches on the 64gb version. Any thoughts about my choice?
That's exactly what I'm doing here, no issues for me.
I think you can use cryoutilities 2.0 to move the shader cache to your SD card to save space on the internal 64 gb drive.
Microsoft should have never given up on mobile. Windows 11 still needs to be more efficient. This is amazing a Full Desktop OS on a handheld.
I thought Microsoft would borrow inspiration from HTC Sense and develop a new mobile OS that was efficient and a UI that was simple and elegant. Instead we got Windows Phone. I too had a Nokia Windows Phone. I really didn't like the Tile based UI but it was a good compromise between Android and iOS. I have always wanted Windows on a handheld device.
@@EnochGitongaKimathi Same here but I will give 'em props for the music subscription it started with (allowing you to flat out own an album a month and continuous listening for the subscription) and the ease of the UI. The layout did leave a hell of a lot to desire though
Have you tried emulators while running windows?
So installing Windows on it pretty much makes it a ROG Ally? I have an Ally now and love being able to install anything but may return and get Deck on sale, upgraded SSD and install W11 just for emulation goodness like Teknoparrot and the such.
How’s the ally working for you might get one
I can’t play mlb show (game pass) on the deck
Steam deck is my 1st gaming pc and I’m having a blast learning Linux
I did not cause it's overwhelming
I'm probably going to install it today or tomorrow.
Have you figured out how to enable secure boot for valorant? Windows 11 on the steam deck
I have a 1tb ssd for Linux and a 256gb sd card for windows. I just updated from 10 to 11 and now Warzone 2 won't start because drivers and amd not installing updates... Keeps asking me to update gpu drivers but amd installer can't find them
I've still been going back and forth on if I put Windows on my Deck.
Has battery life been affected?
Not really
hi when i opening my steamdeck win 11 os its stuck on black screen and the fan noisy is loud i need to power it off on power button then open it again to boot up thanks
Hey, on W11 the Controller of SDT is always updating (the icon is always little bit blinking). Many times i have no controller connection when i restart the system... i have reinstalled everything even Windows itself - same result everytime..... 🤷♂️
Does it take much space?on the ssd?
What about drivers? Wouldn't you need that for windows to identify the internal GPU?

I'm kind of interested in switching to windows for compatibility but idk if it's worth it. I mean the whole steam input for controls is a game changer for portable pcs it makes it so the controls work with almost everything even straight mouse and keyboard games. I like steam os is just the compatibility that kind of hurts it for because it won't run everything some things require alot of tweaking others won't work at all.
Steam Input works fine on Windows, it's just a base Steam feature. You can also dual boot and get the SteamOS UI by running Steam Big Picture.
If you delete all the partitions how do you revert back to stock/OEM? Or is that in BIOS or something?
I also don't think thats a smart thing to do, and I don't think u can revert back if you do that.
I think I will be waiting for valve to release dual booting officially sometime next year(hopefully).
I’m not a Linux fan neither. I installed Windows 11 as soon I got mine too
I wonder when oled drivers coming out...
How is the workaroud to play games that are no longer available on steam.
Say I have the disc. Can I play it on the windows on steam deck? If so, how do I install it?
How do I play my native steam games with windows?
Install steam?
@@scaryifliteralLMAO
By running windows on steam deck is it still the same steps to install emudeck
May I ask if anyone's deck in win 11, awake from sleep automatically without push any button?
Greetz from Germany. Another nice video. Thx for it. How about battery life under windows? Just as long as on SteamOS? I'm actually thinking about buying a Steam Deck and using it with Windows.
So far, the battery has been fairly similar.
what about those free to play shooters for PC?
I like this guy
Thanks for the review. Really answered many of my concerns. One thing tho, have you tried WeMod on it with windows 11?
I have not.
@@scaryifliteral ah I see. Well i hope you'll be able to consider it in the future for testing. New sub btw. Really loving your content👍🏻 keep it up
When you install windows 11, Can you go back to game mode and be baxk on the steam game library?
Hi what controls do you have to download for this … so you can switch between the two thanks
