British preppy style exists as well, and similarly is pioneered by boys from private schools and universities like OxBridge or Durham (as a private school boy whose family has a strong country and nautical heritage, this id how I dress). It’s similar to the American preppy, but incorporates more classic fits, as well as items like Schöffel shooting gilets, Barbour jackets and Harris Tweed, polo belts (look them up, they’re a staple of British preppy), as well as trainers when in a casual setting. After a long time of being called “posh” by people, I realized the British preppy style is the one for me. Great video, very informative!
Having gone to prep schools for the majority of my school years, some of this is incredibly accurate, some of this isn’t. I think they key to the preppy style is looking like you put together your outfit by what doesn’t smell bad, even though it is a meticulous process.
Absolutely one of my favorite channels on YT. And the owner was so kind enough to spend some time with me on the phone as I wrote a business school case (which my students love) about the company and channel.
I was just reading about this and GTH pants on the GG website the other day. 2:30 Here I was coordinating a cloth belt with canvas sneaks and boat shoes because they're so casual yet go so well. Didn't' know it had prep roots. I have a feeling Raphael really liked making this video. Thanks for all the knowledge you all share.
I’m a rube. I live in Rube Village. If YT wasn’t available, I wouldn’t have access to a lot of this information. Looking good is easy enough, refinement to my tastes isn’t. This site helps me a lot.
Nice to run into somebody that knows what they're talking about. I've been dressing Preppy since the mid to late 70's, and my wardrobe, as you might guess by now, is jaw-dropping! I am easily one of the best dressed guys in Boston (BRAG!), which if you saw the guys in Boston, it's not a difficult thing to achieve! I have subscribed, and looking forward to watching your other videos.

I bought a Nantucket reds trouser this year on ebay. Also, Sperry canvas shoes in dreamsicle orange, navy, and a cream colored pair. I found a red kaki chino from Lands End. These are interesting colors and give me more variety than my cream, navy and kaki colored chinos and ivory colored linen slacks. I like to wear a variety of different colored linen shirts in both long and short sleeves. I bought a pair of brand new white Ralph Lauren carpenter jeans. A coral colored cotton sweater I found while thrifting locally. Of course I wear cream colored knit cotton and also navy sweaters. Color is fun for me in the good old summertime. Thank you for your videos and website posts.
Delightful video not necessarily a preppy style gentleman but I can indeed appreciate how to incorporate some of the suggestions you offer in this video into my own wardrobe thanks
This ain't no philosophical dissertation. I don't really care much about writing sentences with proper grammar and the right spelling even though I would try to do that when writing on RUclips comment section or Facebook status update.
I like croquet. My family played a lot of croquet when I was young. We went through two sets of the game. I can picture some of these outfits as the perfect croquet gear.
At age 67, I'm an old prep, but probably closer to the original look than many. There are two looks for men: casual- "all my clothes are of great classic quality and I just grabbed something to put on." In actuality, the look is studied and balanced. Bright colors are controlled by neutrals. I.e. One of my favorites is bright green cords with a navy blazer, white button down shirt and navy/ green tie. 1953 Gucci loafers- but no designer logos. No socks. Also , try a polo shirt UNDERNEATH the dress shirt with all collars showing and no tie. Cuffs, your monogram in discrete places , small watches, ribbon belts, Burberry trench coat. Black is never worn. Suits: natural fibers- navy blue, gray, tan. Classic 3 button style. No back packs.highly polished shoes. The preppy style is a lifestyle: how you talk, how you decorate your home, what you drink, where you summer, what you drive and the correct choice of color. As I mentioned, I'm now age 67 and I continue to wear the same look from my school days.
If one is being really honest everything to do with suiting and suits is of English origin, it may be that ‘prep’ style as a terminology comes from America but most of it was truly inspired by Ivy League which essentially just copied British upper class clothing and sportswear. Conclusion prep is essentially English
I just got early acceptance to Stanford, and I only where this style to dinners or luncheons/parties, so I'm gonna stick out walking around in my casual clothes
This was amusing. Thank you for the levity. As much as Stanford would like to assume it rules over the PAC12, it's Oregon that rules. All you have to do is watch Animal House which was filmed on campus my Freshman year.
Filmayte JCPenney/Macy's, Uniqlo, and H&M if you wanna get OCBDs/Polo Shirts, Chinos and maybe some shoes. However going on ebay or finding a thrift store can work too. Go early in the morning to buy clothing so you can beat anyone who'll upsell the clothing. Buy Linen/100% Cotton if you want to stay cool.
Zara actually often has a lot of preppy-influenced clothing, chinos, button downs, blazers, sweaters etc. that are cut in more modern silhouettes, too.
Anyone know any good sources to purchase Ralph Lauren crest polos shirts? I've been having a hard time finding them even online. You would think the internet would have a larger selection.
I know this is a 3 year old post but I put in my opinion. Sweaters are generally made and sized with the intention of the wearer layering with a shirt underneath. With that said, buy your regular size. But be careful with some brands that offer different fits, such as "athletic" or "slim" fit. Most traditional makers expect the customer to layer a shirt underneath their sweater, so I would buy the size you wear to avoid a baggy, untailored look.
The most intriguing clothing from this style. Not sure if I want the pants, but the Nantucket red sports jacket that Murray's sells is very appealing. If I ever got to Boston, Martha's Vineyards, or Chappaquiddick, I'll be sure to go to Murray's and get the sports jacket. Maybe the trousers. JFK probably wasn't wrong when it came to style.
Is it just me or does it kinda seem like the rebellious and non traditional look of this style is bothering him. It just seems like his hiding so much disdain behind that style. Not trying to accuse him, he just seems uncomfortable to me.
As much as I enjoy some of Sven's videoes, he is clearly clueless on American style past 1950. Some of the brands he tote as great and the ones that are "poor" are difficult to understand. He was clearly born in the wrong era. He clearly would have gotten along well with Fred Astaire and F Scott FItzgerald more than he would have with Papa Hemmingway and Gary Cooper. Jack Reeves is right there is a difference in being well dressed and a gentleman and looking to have your lunch money taken everyday.
God this isn't what prep is at all, if anything this is a gross exaduration of prep and isn't really indicitive of what preppy people really look like. If you showed up to your econ lecture or the yacht club wearing most any of the outfits show in this video you would be instantly recognized as trying too hard to be like them.
Most of them, anyway. Sometimes I'm a tiny bit confused about what clothing item he's talking about, but that could be easily fixable by just showing the piece of clothing alone at first and then show it in an outfit.
I love the Ivy/Preppy style. I have turned Brooks Brothers my second home

Magic Guild amen to that
I love the preppy/ Ivy League style!
I agree! Brook brothers is the best, but I also like Polo Ralph Lauren which also delivers that Ivy/Preppy style as well.
What are our doing since they’ve declared bankruptcy.
Ivy-prep is incredibly versatile and cost-effective. I definitely get more outfit combinations out of my capsule pieces compared to matching suits.

Pulled off the Prep-style look 🔥
I can't believe I did it, despite it took me 3 year to figure it out.
The more we learn about it from videos like this, it becomes easier to understand and incorporate into our own style of living.

Have you done a video on "How to wear the muffler right way?"
Thanks for all these videos Sven. You are doing a great job. :)
Phenomenal, very easy to listen to this gentleman.
I love the way this guy talks.
this is that new bold, gth preppy style. i prefer the traditional, classy look of ivy skids.
Vineyard vines is a great store brand for preps. Expensive but very good. I live in a very wealthy town and everyone in my school wears it.
Cole Chapman Is it more expensive than Polo Ralph Lauren?
Cole Chapman that store is the new Abercrombie. Had good intentions but turned into a kids brand. Walk into the store, its manned by teenagers.
Cole Chapman Vineyard vines is relatively cheap. Any designer brand will be around 10 times more expensive at the least.
I think with prep style bright colours are best
Just so you know...I think you are a delight to watch. Love the preppy look!

What is preppy
PREPPYS only mimicked college apparel to show they were college bond and were called colleege
this guy scares me. he looks like the man who would drive the white van around elementary schools in the 90s when I was a wee lad..
