The thing I like best about the Nerogaunts is where the plating is on their bodies. Scientifically, animals evolve to have thicker hide or scales to survive in certain conditions, and Tyranids are masters of adaptation. These are melee units that charge in and rip their targets apart, which means they'll be getting shot at as they close the gap. The thicker carapace is exactly where bullets or lasgun fire would land if they were shot at from the front. It's a very nice attention to detail

I keep hearing about Star Craft being intended as a licensed 40k game. But pretty sure Blizzard have said that wasn't the case (that they were seeking a license) WarCraft was intended to be WH Fantasy. Also Starcraft has more in common with Starship Troopers (with the Protoss being similar to the Skinnies).
To be fair, WH40k lifts a lot from Starship Troopers as well.

So apparently the connection between Starcraft and 40k is just a myth, the consideration to collaborate was just brought up as an idea and didn't go any farther than that. It just so happens that when you draw from similar sources (the xenomorph from Alien, the bugs from Starship Troopers, etc.) you get similar ideas. And the only ones that really have much similarity are the zerg and Tyranids; even then, they don't actually line up that much aside from overall aesthetic, especially if you compare the Tyranids that were out when Starcraft came out. The Marines kinda line up with Astartes, but the Protoss don't compare all that much to 40k, at least enough to draw straight parallels for Starcraft originating as a 40k game.

    • @kenupton4084

So, since this topic has kicked the horse to paste, I'll catch you up to speed.
GW licenced the IP to Blizzard to make a Warhammer Fantasy Battles videogame. They pulled out when the project was about 80% complete.
Blizzard finished the game and repackaged it under Warcraft: Orcs vs Humans.
GW sued and lost but cost Blizzard a fortune in legal fees.
Blizzard then made Starcraft specifically as a slap in the face to GW while trying their best to toe the line of copyright infringement, all the while regaining their losses through Warcraft sales and popularity.
There is a very, very deep dive on DakkaDakka from around 2014 when the topic came up for the 30th billion time.

I’m liking the models a lot and I’m starting to think about how they could fit with my Black Templar army. But I did just put Roboute together yesterday and I am planning on an Ultramarines army so perhaps I’ll use this box for that army.
My friend and I are either going to pay half each (he’s a Tyranid player) or we’re going to each buy our own box and trade Astartes for Tyranids. That’ll either cut the cost on the box if it really is close to $250, or I’ll get doubles of all of these cool new SM models.
I’ve Templars, Black Legion, Necrons, and Grey Knight armies at the moment, and while I like Tyranids I don’t really want to start yet another army as Ultra and Adeptus are going to be my next two armies.

I care and hearing this makes me happy... One thing I hope they introduce is more of the variety we used to have with the firstborns... such as the helmets, backpacks etc. that you mention! Every single suit of armour being identical takes away from the idea that the armours are relics that are added to iteratively over the millenia.

I like this box more than indomitus. I will definitely want that. Great tyranid minis that I would love to collect and paint. Plus a lot of miniatures I would like to have in my dark angels. Maybe I don't want all of them (e.g. Infernus Squad) but I'm glad there are no stupid primaris with T-shirt launchers and those boring intercessors

Yup! I can’t wait for each unit is sold separately! I don’t want 100% of the SMs and I don’t play nids at all. So if I got this box it would just collect dust unless I found someone to but it. I am still considered as a new fan (and I don’t know if they already did this before I got into it) but when I first heard about this box coming and they didn’t say what was inside I was really hoping that the Orks would be in there! Oh well. And I’m not a fan of the Terminator armor in the past but this one is kinda cool. I’m pretty much done buying my SM. I just need to build and paint the rest of them. But I still need a good deal of Orks to have a full army and because I didn’t realize how expensive this hobby was when I first started (where I got most of my stuff everything I got was on some crazy sale but it wasn’t posted as it was on sale) I have 3 armys I’m trying to build. So I also need to get a little more to finish off my Necrons! Oh well

I like that the Black Templar HQs came with some combi options (just plasma for the multi part stuff i think and the flamer on the everything is skulls Castellan). The sternguard getting a combi melta is nice, excited to see the full kits for all the new units/refreshed units!!
My hopes for what the full kits and options are so far are the termies keeping all their old stuff (maybe even the sergeant getting something new like THSS), sternguard keeping the similar amount of options the firstborn kit has (especially the heavy flamer), the flamer marines having a heavy flamer would be really nice imo, maybe some kind of new flame grenade?
Im hoping the rules for combi weapons do keep their individual functions of flamers, plasmas, meltas all having the profile of both weapons, and that the combi weapon profile on that librarian datasheet is just for a specfici weapon and not all of them rolled into one.
Im not a Nids collecter, but with this box Im realllly tempted to get it, and if I dont find someone to share this half with then i guess Ill just have to start a nids army lol

Onto the Starcraft comparisons, I actually really like the design of Heavy Intercessors...probably because they remind me so much of Terrans from Starcraft.
