As always, brilliant video absolutely love the content these people put out. I've been a long time diorama builder and the 3 small bits of advice that helped me the most were: 1. Have some verticality in your project, a smaller base with something vertical grabs the eye 2. Have the project on an angle so if its a squared off base, have the mini on an angle not facing a flat side 3. Its a snap shot in time so if you're able have the mini in an unnatural pose such as Lucas fabulous mini jumping over the rocks
I really love having some plants, especially flowers on the bases of my (good) minis, really gives you the feeling that your models have something to live and fight for
I've watch all your videos and there are so many minis and armies you show in this video I cant remember. It would be cool to see a video that shows off all your armies and best minis and you reflect on what works and what you would do differently. Thanks for all the contents.
9:09 I would also add aquarium gravel/small rocks. Not heavy, you get em in big bags where you're sure to find the kind you're looking for. Though these are smaller than the rocks you were talking about.
Amazing video! Thank you guys. I feel like I am doing a lot more than I thought for my bases. So many of those techniques are now in my builds. What a nice recap or pointers for everyone to enjoy.
Always enjoy a long ass video on improving bases lol. Bases really can sell a model and the overall completion of a miniature or model piece. Who better than the Squidmar team to teach me more haha. Also quick tip on free basing material, go to your local hardware store that sellls garden supplies and ask for free samples of sand and bark. Usually there is a bag open for customers to see them and compare
My next project is gonna be trying to make a "ruined city" for my basing, antique style, and the khorne daemons that'll go with them will be painted to resemble animated statues with red cracks and eyes. Definitely a welcome video to give me some hints on how to go about it.
Just getting into my first warhammer build. Space marines. Was keeping the bases simple , but after watching this I may need to up my game lol. Top video and really good ideas to make bases simple but creative. Thnx dude.
Really great video! It would be awesome to see Emil and Lukas do a challenge about bases. Like they do for miniatures. Like they roll random the theme or Colors scheme, and have a limited time to do the best bases possible
For adding a fleshy/gory/gross organic texture to a base for cheap an easy way to do so is as follows: 1. Cover the desired area in PVA glue 2. Whilst the PVA is still wet add some drops of super glue into it. 3. Wait like five to ten seconds as the super glue will begin to dry whilst the PVA is still wet. 4. With a cocktail stick, texture spreader or the back of a old brush gently twist, nudge or otherwise shape the dried/drying super glue areas to your desired shape. 6. When your happy leave the PVA to dry fully. 7. With appropriately coloured translucent paint/s (contrast/speed paint, thinned acrylic, glazes, etc) paint over the area. Following which you can then layer/highlight/etc to your preference. 8. To make the area look wet, slimy, etc add a gloss varnish like ard coat over the area as a final touch. Some potential paint suggestions for different effects are: - Raw/soft flesh: a dark pink like Speed Paint Purple Alchemy is ideal. - Blood/gore: a dark red like Speed Paint Slaughter Red or Citadel Flesh Tearers works well - Toxic sludge/nurgley effects: a pale sickly yellow/green like Citadel Plaguebearer Flesh is what I'd probably go for.
Also, cut the tufts into smaller bits and put them directly into the texture paste while it dries, so it looks like it is in the actual sand/ground. Also, owning a chinchilla provides great super fine dirt-sand, since they bathe in it.
Hi, I like to add 1 product: Structure paint, cheap white structure paint in a 5 litre pot. That's my primary way to cover a base, poor stones and sand or other stuff over the wet structure paint. Let dry and do paint, washes etc. I used to sell pre-mixed pots of coloured structure paint for wargamers many years ago.
the first homemade basing material I heard of was someone who claimed they started drying their teabags after using them, with earl grey and dajeerling apparently looking decent according to them. And the second, from someone replying to the first, was dry herbs from the supermarket ground fine as you can get them.
Hey Squidmar/Emil. First, awesome video, took some notes and can't wait to put them on practice. Got a couple of questions: A) Mini is already painted and glued to the base because nobody teached you about basing 6 years ago, do you recommend to de-glue the mini and work on the base, or add the details around? (Pretty much that happened on all of the Chaos Dark Vengeance minis) B) Got a couple of Wardogs that I'm painting separate from the bases, the plan is to add rumble and write on cursive the names of the pilots on the upper plates of Rhinos, as well got some rocks and crystals that loved how they look, should I glue them, and add masking for protecting them before primer? C) Texture paint goes before or after the primer?
Great video as always. I wish you could do a painting tutorial on how to paint glasses, sun glasses on figures, widows and wind screens on solid cast resin sci fi vehicles.
Saw you at Maxi today Emil and thought about stopping and thanking you for all the excellent content, but as you looked about as stressed and confused as I was feeling I refrained from doing so :D But anyways, thanks!
Great news, I finaly found a cheep enough compressor, a real one, its so much better than the battery thing that came with the airbrush, its shaped like an elephant for some reason but my airbrush now works properly. in stead of when it felt like it. love this tutorial thankyou.
Emil, you can't polish a turd, BUT, you can roll it in glitter 😉 Also, one trick we found when doing my wife's army was that once she had decided on a scheme for the whole army, we mixed up a big tub of the primary colour, about 300ml, from cheap acrylics. That way you've got enough to do hundreds of models without ever having to try to colour match each time you do a new unit. 👍
This resonates with me. I use fairy garden grass and cur it up for flock. That with valejo mud annd a broen wash once dry then pva glue wirh mt flock and a tuft or 2 and my mediocre models looks amazing
Great video, I bought those alien grass tufts and use them for my Infinity Combined Army. They do look a bit different than in the pictures but I like them ;)
For cheap grass tufts. Jute string/twin. Drop of paint, unwound string & placed in drop of glue. Once dry, give it a tease & manipulate to shape you like/want. Can look quite good.
I don't know if it's a thing but, for a while, I kept my coffee grinds to dry them and use that instead of dirt. It was a free by-product and it didn't require much work. Still have a container and a half out of two, even after two years.
Alfagrog is a good rock to use, it’s an artificial rock used in aquarium filters.. It’s porous, lightweight, easy to break up or crush with heavy hammer.. it looks like what you’d imagine space rock looks like or volcanic rock..
Hi, this video is great and gave me a lot of ideas for my army. However I have a dumb question So, I have some sticks, branches leaves, moss etc. At what temperature should I out it in the oven, and for how long? I really don't want to burn it or something
A good way to get some good ground cover and in scale rock is to acquire it the same as Squidmar (real rocks). However, you throw these rocks into a mortar and pestle. A very cheap tool which will help you smash up rocks into very, very small scales and leave you with powders and sand scale pieces. You combine this with a good texture paste and going back and forth with all the tips in this video and you'll have correct scale rocks. You'll also have perfect "sprinkle" pieces of various sizes for the gaps and silhouette requirements for your composition. Highly suggest trying it.
I recently discovered that I have way more fun creating bases than painting minis... And I created my own texture pastes with filler, pva glue and texture (coffee, rice flour, sand, dirt, coconut fiber, it's infinite !)
Hej Emil @SquidmarMiniatures freebie tip for the 3d printers out there, old supports from resin prints, cure them and into a cheap spice grinder from ikea(DO THIS OUTSIDE WITH A MASK) and badabing, gravel and sand for free thats inorganic and ready to glue, and you recycled actual trash :D
What about sealing? Im doing a forest vase for my army of a mix of coconut/leaves. I tried a runny super glue but it instantly reacts with the husk by sizzling/smoking for a few seconds.
new guy question, how do you attach them to those bases? i thought i would get creative w walnut shell bedding to look like sand...and nothing stuck. t.t i bought a drill to pin but is there another way?
Hello guys!! Can you make a video where teach how to practice painting minis without painting minis..... I mean, sometiems buying minis are way to expensive, so I want to know hot to practice, glazing, drybrushing, stippling, etc, etc. All the technics but on budget.. I'll be thakfull :)

Dwarves mines diorama please !!!
Warhammer the old world's plz
Emil loves tufts that much that he’s started attaching them around his mouth and chin 😂
You just gave me idea how to get cheap static grass... now where is my razor!

Just got some new minis and was looking for some base inspiration and boom! my fav painters and 40k channel has a vid...thankyou

After I saw your baseing technique with sand and peble I do this for all my minis. The effect is great

Saved watching this video until I finished painting my Alarielle so now that she's ready for basing it's the perfect time to watch and learn!
Seeing Emil building those fantasy houses etc. I thing we need an episode where they display what they all have on the shelves to play with. :)
I watch your vids all the time you go man
I this is very generous and solid advice. It could have been locked behind a patreon but you’re giving it away for free. Thank you.

So much solid information in 1 video!
Ok, that's been by fara the best base guide i saw in internet, and belive me I saw a few in the past days...
For me basing is as important as the mini itself. Thamls for the video!
This 'collage' was extremely inspiring!!!
Awesome video, absolutely loved this one gents!
Incredible video, thanks for all the tips and tricks
One of your best Video. More Stuff like that! Thanks!
You guys should do a video all about resin pours and what you’ve learned
garden centres are the best place for miniature basing stuff - stones, clay , soils, barks, etc
All your base are belong to us! Great Video. I needed that!
This is an instant classic, inspired me to keep working on my Slaves to Darkness
Very cool basing techniques! Could you share the LOTR terrain you used for Alarielle? It would be awesome!
This is perfect overview, thank you!
Love it! Thanks for all the wonderful ideas!

Perfect! Just what I’m about to start doing
Krautcover is also a really good basing material to buy for ground texture.

Hey, real big fan. I like your work
Acrylic wood filler paste from Clas Ohlson is great, too.
pine or christmas tree bark is also very easy to get a hold on if you live in a colder country
Great video. Is there are video on how you did the basing and painting of your AoS Kruleboyz army?
On the subject of cork bark you MUST use a respirator when breaking or handling it.
I live a few blocks away from a large shale quarry, free basing materials! I do need to expand beyond that though
Hi, this video is great and gave me a lot of ideas for my army. However I have a dumb question

Emil sounded like the iconic club intro on the ole Dusk Till Dawn film when on about those grass tufts 😂
A lot of pet store aquarium sand is live active so don't forget to use the oven here too if you end up with some
how about an epoxy pour where you use the bubbles inside to look like an underwater vent, that would be interesting to see or figure out.
Lukas is getting sooo many cookies this week :)

Amazing video Emil, very very helpful. Can you just please post me link where you buying mesh net?
How does the Vaseline residue interact with the primer? Do you clean the surface before painting after you're done with painting?
Fenomeno n. 1 veramente tutto estremamente interessante.

Any advice for making the mini look like it is in the basing material and not glued on top?
Awesome!!! Thanks you guys!

Does anyone know where that spider model is from? That thing is beautiful!!
I love how your superglue spray has the word superglue in five languages, but three of them are the same word.
when you're scrolling on your phone and zone back in at "I pretty much just use my thumbs, vaseline....." 😂😂
Is there a video of the parkour dreadnought?
Are there alternatives to poler twist? I've looked on amazon and eBay and cannot find anywhere that sells it. I'm UK based. Cheers
Great tips, but I kind of wish more people show how to attach the figures to these extravagant bases after they have been made.
What about sealing? Im doing a forest vase for my army of a mix of coconut/leaves. I tried a runny super glue but it instantly reacts with the husk by sizzling/smoking for a few seconds.
newbie here wondering how line of sight is handles with these super high custom bases? Does it affect it or is it ignored in favour of balancing?
you can also buy like 10 lbs of sand from your local hardware store or garden store
Cool video, lots of useful information. Give Lucas his cookie.
I got arrested stealing sand from a kids play ground, i told them some guy on youtube told me to do it.
new guy question, how do you attach them to those bases? i thought i would get creative w walnut shell bedding to look like sand...and nothing stuck. t.t i bought a drill to pin but is there another way?
Should try Rival Crafts for basing materials. The tuffts omg :D
How to attach minis with little contact surface like leaping witchelves and such?
