MEDICAL ANIMATION TRANSCRIPT: When you eat, food passes from your mouth into your esophagus, a muscular tube that leads to your stomach. Your esophagus has a ring of muscle at the end called the lower esophageal sphincter. It opens to let food into your stomach. Normally, it stays closed to prevent stomach contents from going back up into your esophagus. If the sphincter doesn't close all the way, gastroesophageal reflux or GER can happen. The weak or relaxed sphincter allows the contents of your stomach to reflux or leak back into your esophagus. Acid in the stomach contents irritates your esophagus. This can cause a painful, burning feeling in your chest called heartburn or acid indigestion. It's common to have gastroesophageal reflux once in a while. However, if it happens more than twice a week for a few weeks, you may have a more serious condition called gastroesophageal reflux disease, also known as GERD. If left untreated, GERD can lead to complications over time. For example, you may develop esophagitis, where the lining of your esophagus becomes inflamed or irritated. Your esophagus may become too narrow, which is a condition called esophageal stricture. GERD may cause you to breathe stomach acid into your lungs. This can lead to respiratory problems such as asthma, chest congestion, hoarseness, wheezing, laryngitis, and pneumonia. GERD can also lead to a condition called Barret's esophagus. In this condition, the cells lining your lower esophagus are replaced with cells similar to those in your intestine. This may increase your risk for developing cancer in your esophagus. Common causes of GERD include being pregnant, or overweight, which puts pressure on your abdomen, smoking, certain medications such as those that treat allergies, high blood pressure, and depression, and a hiatal hernia. A hiatal hernia is a condition where the upper part of your stomach moves up through an opening in your diaphragm. This makes it easier for stomach acid to come up into your esophagus. The most common symptom of GERD is heartburn. Other symptoms include nausea, problems swallowing, bad breath, hoarseness, sore throat, and bringing food back up called regurgitation. To find out more about gastroesophageal reflux disease, talk to your healthcare provider.

I've always suffered from bad breath and used to get lots of cavities as a child. I was bullied all through middle and high school because of it. This has caused me to feel insecure when speaking to people. I was told I had a hiatal hernia approx 20 years ago in my early 20's. I didn't do anything about it because surgery back then was more complicated. I'm going to see a doctor soon to see what's up with the hernia and if surgery can be done to correct it. Praise God for bringing this up to me this morning during prayer. Hoping this problem can be finally resolved and I can feel comfortable speaking to people face to face.

I don’t know if I have GERD but about a year and half ago I started doing a lot of cardio everyday in order to lose weight and fat that I had gained throughout the covid lockdowns. I managed to get to a really healthy state however all of a sudden I felt like I was going vomit during these cardio sessions and couldn’t explain why. Ever since then I have the stomach acid reflux always in my throat whenever I do any kind of exercise whether it be weightlifting or cardio, or it even hits me at home when I move around alot or pace. I don’t know if this is GERD but I never feel any heartburn nor do I have any kind of pain. It just makes me cough severely because it feels like I’ll vomit as there’s something in my throat. It totally ruins a workout and has become harder to lose weight because of this.

At this exact moment that liquid partially enters the lungs and I'll feel a burning sensation in my lungs. You're talking about weeks of concern, but I'm 25 I've had some of those symptoms my whole life, and I didn't even notice, until recently when I realized not everyone can feel the food gushing in their throat when they are slightly fuller than usual or laying on their side...
That was a shock to me.
At ages 11 - 16 I was always told by doctors to reduce my weight, I never concerned myself for I've never been given evidence or told what complications I could face in life, I just disregarded it as something rude people say to overweight people since I've heard it from strangers, friends and my father all the time, all those people made jokes and ridiculed me out of "concern" so I never took anything they said seriously.
I wonder what kind of complications I have now and how expensive and lengthy it would be to get proper treatment. And judging by my current financial situation I don't think I will know any time soon, unless some emergency happen.
But I've already started a journey and changed my life style starting by quitting 5yrs smoking habit 2 months ago and watching how and I eat since last year, and as of recently been working out.
All that was motivated by me noticing something was wrong.
I wish me well and I hope my life improves and prospers.

Reflux is most commonly caused by weak stomach acid. The Lower Esophageal Sphincter muscle is cued to close by contact with strong stomach acid. If your stomach acid, Hydrochloric Acid, is too weak then it will remain flaccid allowing acidic stomach content to spill back into the esophagus eventually leading to a cancerous state known as Barrett Syndrome. The causes of low stomach acid can be, low salt intake, over eating or consuming too much food without sufficient water intake.
The Chief Cells in the lining of your stomach use the Chlorine from salt and the Hydrogen from water to create Hydrochloric Acid which aids in the denaturing of proteins and the break down of other foods. Your other digestive enzymes work best in an acidic environment. The common practice of restricting salt intake can cause multiple problems as sodium is not only important for digestion but also nervous system function and proper absorption of other important minerals. Overeating can cause reflux by using up stomach acid faster than it can be replaced. Without the proper absorption of other minerals like calcium, your stomach cannot neutralize the acidic stomach contents so that it can pass safely into the small intestines. The best rule of thumb is to salt your food to taste and use a mineralized salt like Sea Salt or mined salt such as Himalayan salt.

The stomach Acid is very strong ie. A pH value of 1 to 3. It should stay that way. As a result of poor diet and antacids the stomach acids weakens to almost becoming alkaline. When the Acid is weak that's when the valve opens and Acid goes up the aesophagus. When the Acid is stron it closes the valve. Therefore to avoid this problem do the following
    1. Avoid sugary things, excessive alcohol.
Improve your stomach Acid by fasting, take apple cider vinegar. It's simply fixing the diet.
Then this problem will go away.
Remember. Antacids makes this problem persist.

I've had GERD for almost a decade, it was bearable in the beginning but got worse with time. I came across Dr. Berg's ACV (apple cider viniger) video on YT and I tried it, I have to say its like I'm back to how it was a decade ago, can't thank him enough. I realised that PPI's are part of the problem but I thought otherwise before trying ACV.

In my opinion, that mostly goes with Dysphagia. Which is difficulty in swallowing.

Since you posted that video and I used to have GERD since August 2021.
My first time experience was choking on cheese fish cracker and I thought I was eating too fast because I used to eating too fast.
Then I went slow but then I kept choking and gagging from first week to last week of August 2021.
I knew something wasn’t right because I kept choking and gagging so much.
Until I thought I might have allergy to food that caused me to unable to breathe that lead me to ER and I told them about they thought it has to do with my allergy but I didn’t know I had shellfish allergy and GERD at same time.
I got shellfish allergy from my mother’s genetic. (Shame on her because I was shellfish lover.)
When I was in ER I explained to ER doctor about my suffering of excessive saliva because I noticed that I had it since I started choking and gagging.
They told me I might have GERD but they couldn’t promise that I have GERD until they made me an appointment with gastroenterologist.
Until I met with gastroenterologist about my suffering of excessive saliva they told me it has to do with acid reflux and asked me if I had heartache or something that I didn’t have expect swallowing problem.
They made an appointment for endoscopy surgery for me.
What I have learned after endoscopy surgery?
After endoscopy surgery, It was turned out I had GERD.
They gave me omperazole pills in every morning.
Few weeks after surgery I still struggled to swallow because of anxiety. (I had anxiety for few months before Coronavirus started or March 2020 where I lived when coronavirus started.)
Anxiety can cause you not to be able to swallow yourself and make excessive saliva.
I learned to swallow small piece of food that helps you to swallow easier without water.
Helping you to swallow any small pieces of food with little liquid (especially water) seemed to be cheating for you because I found this too easy for me but it was cheating for me to swallow.
I wanted to swallow any food without liquid drink (especially water) independently.
I struggled with excessive saliva and I didn’t understand why and I decide to do some research from internet and I have learned is eating too much acidic food and drinking my favorite soda and beer that has acidic that I had been eating and drinking too much acidic that causes reflux acid.
Too much reflux acid can/could cause GERD depending on people.
Also excessive saliva too because of it.
Way to avoid excessive saliva by eating alkaline food or drink water with Alka-Seltzer Extra Strength after eating too much acidic food. (If you live in USA but I cannot promise that it would work for you because some people did work and some people didn’t work.)
But… I cannot promise you could beat excessive saliva because some people didn’t work on MY method.
Some people can solve excessive saliva problems. Some people can’t solve excessive saliva problems.
I still do have problem with excessive saliva problem.
I already made an appointment with ENT specialist in June 2022 (Ear Nose Throat) for my excessive saliva because of my swallowing problem or anxiety.
Excessive saliva can affect your breathing and sleep schedule. (I had been experiencing that.)
Always drink water with alkaline because it helps to reduce acidity from your stomach because your stomach always have acidity.
In early March 2022, I began to notice that my swallow became improved and somewhat normal but not 100% but it feels like it’s 75%-90%.
I am somehow able to swallow easier without liquid.
I am still eating junk food that has very much acidic and soda has same.
I am currently taking omeprazole (1 time per every morning) and Alka-Seltzer (2-3 times per day).
I am still processing on learning about low acidic diet and becoming vegan (I wanted to became vegan for weekday not weekend because I am meat eater and I would be gladly to take Alka-Seltzer 2-3 times for weekend only).
I hope my method would be helpful you but if not then I am sorry.
But, at least internet has many sources so I hope it would be helpful for you.

Fortunately, after undergoing endoscopic surgery, the doctor found the root cause, namely GERD, since I was treated I don't feel nauseous anymore. I recommend if you experience symptoms like me, to consult a doctor and undergo endoscopic surgery.

I found I can't eat any plant in the mint family, including basil. I can't eat real spicy foods. I can only eat fresh tomatoes. Cooked tomatoes, especially those that are cooked for a long time, cause problems. I can eat onion and garlic as long as they are thoroughly cooked. No OJ at all. No lemon-lime sodas or flavored waters. No real fatty foods. Small amounts of chocolate.

    Dear Reader,
I want you to know today that Jesus Christ loves you.
The fact is, He loves you so much that He made the ultimate sacrifice for you! You see, God is a perfect, just God who will not tolerate sinful people coming into heaven, and the problem is that we are sinful by nature. No matter how much good we do, it will never be enough to meet God's perfect standard. The good Lord knew this, and He loved us so much that He came down to earth, lived a sinless life, and died to take the sin of the world.
Romans 6:23 "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."
All you have to do is ask the Lord to forgive your sin and tell Him that you accept His gift of salvation as the ONLY way to eternal life.
Please consider salvation today; you never know when your time may be up. Remember, Jesus loves you! I hope to meet you in heaven one day!

Well the truth is each of us has different organism. And in this case each of us is suffering not the same. I advise to go n get a checkout at a specialist in this disease because if untreated may have other bad effects.
About drinking alcohol... I can drink coffee...the beer n other drinks only for short period like 3 to 5 days... After that I stop because I know GERD will reactivates. But like I said at 1st place... If u know what can u eat n what not this way you know how u will feel. And if u need u can get the recommended meds for help.

I've been struggling with bad breath for a while now. I thought it was my teeth. After going to dentists, periodontists, having my wisdom tooth pulled.. My dental hygiene is good. I brush, I floss I use a water pik.
So they indicated it may not be my mouth... so fast forward I was diagnosed with GERD just yesterday. I've been given a regimen of does and don't and PPI mess. I just want to know will the bd breath ever go away? This is affecting my life in so many ways. Almost sending me into a depression. Can anyone relate and give feedback on if it was ever normal again? I'll take the heartburn and nausea I just want regular breath and my confidence back.

Can anyone tell me if this could suddenly appear? For 3 weeks ive had extremely painful indigestion without heartburn on my breastbone.
In particular when i swallow food the pain feels like im having a heart attack when it travels down my throat.
Last weekend i was having a meal with my family and straight after swallowing i started choking, it was very scary for myself and my family.
Anti acids don't relieve any pain and i feel as though I have something permanently in my throught ie like a tablet that won't go down.
Is this normal or should i see a gp? I dont want to seem like im wasting the doctors time for indigestion but im becoming scared to eat my meals because of the pain in my chest after swallowing.

@@ankitbahukhandi1550 hi Ankit, I had an endoscopy and it’s a hiatus hernia. The way the specialist explained the pain was, imagine burning your hand with an iron then running it under a hot tap. It’s the same with the acid, you won’t necessarily feel the heartburn but the acid is causing pain where’s its already tender in that area, that’s why we feel the pain. Takes about 3 weeks to resolve if you take anti acids because the inflammation needs to settle. I couldn’t understand why they weren’t working but now makes sense. Hope you feel better soon.

I’ve had GERD like symptoms for about 3 years now, but I’m still not 100% sure on my disease. I’ve been searching online for what It could be, and I haven’t found any disease that matches my symptoms. I have these symptoms:
A chocking like, tight feeling at the bottom of my neck (remains constant, never goes away)
    Trouble swallowing
Very light heartburn once or twice a week at random times
    Mild regurgitation during eating
    Maybe sometimes bloating at night
Can someone please tell me what this is and how to treat it? These symptoms never go away even with my gerd diet. Any medicine recommendations? I’m very worried, your response might save my life.

Just make sure to get that checked, Unless of course you already tried getting a check up for it. Personally i have GERD like syptoms as well where i keep unconciously and sometimes conciously regurgitating food right after i eat them and a weird feeling that i have to regurgitate it. But i can't say it's the same for you so you should really ask a doctor to check out your symptoms

Maybe you gotta wait a little after eating before working out to let it digest? Another thing is although you are working on your health through working out you may need to cut certain foods from your diet.

@@daddylonglegs3698 Nah because it occurs sometimes even as soon as I get out of bed, or sometimes when I’m walking around. Im thinking its something called silent reflux but I don’t know for sure yet. As for the diet the only things I can see to cut out is fizzy drinks, tomatoes, onions, and spicy foods etc. as they seem to be factors.

@@snowy-19It hasn’t completely gone, but recently I noticed that it has become a lot, *LOT* better to the point it hardly comes, but it is still there. Like when I go to the gym now I don’t feel it as much during weight lifting but it still slightly appears if I push too hard. Also I do skipping/jump rope workout at home like 2-3 times per week and it doesn’t hit me during this. At first I could slightly feel it coming during the skipping rope workout when I began doing it, but now I dont feel it that much. Like I said its not completely gone because I still feel it at home sometimes mostly when Im brushing my teeth, but it also appears randomly when I walk outside etc.
However one thing I notice that really helps is to stop drinking fizzy drinks and beverages, and avoid spicy foods like chilli sauce too etc. I think this also makes a big difference.

Thanx for sharing the detail. I started this issue and suffered with this twice only. But this again came back from last 2021 during lock down and i was not aware of reason of GERD. During GERD, stomach used to get bloated causing breathing problem. No medicine workable during time. Somehow cleared when i had belching and i started breathe properly. GERD happens mostly in night time only.
This year again suffered same, than searched on net and told to doctor who prescribed Acidity tablet course of 15 days which generally cured it. So, now it is fine but scared of it, especially bloating.
Wheezing happens due to some cough after bloating. Soar throat and Regurgitation problem is there sometime, but not regular. One thing i noticed that while bending forward, i feel pain in right sight below chest and get cramped too. What is the cause of it? Is it any serious thing?
I am scared of bloating and feels better die, suffering instead.
Doctor advice to walk more which i started.
