Another factor which I NEVER hear highlighted (even by this Dr) is bad sitting posture. While bio chemistry is obviously the major cause of GERD, simple physical pressure on the stomach sac itself forces stomach contents upwards. People who "don't sit up straight" usually with their shoulders slouched forwards often at keyboards physically press down on the rib cage which in turn presses your lungs & diaphragm down onto your stomach sac and into your lower abdomen causing increased pressure within the stomach with the result of forcing acidic stomach contents upwards. Sitting up straight with your shoulders back, together with slow deep breathing (and even holding your arms up straight above your head for a minute or so) lifts and expands your ribcage and relieves the downward pressure on your stomach, increasing its internal volume and reducing the chance of stomach contents being pushed upwards into the oesophagus.
i suffer from lpr and whenever i sit straight i feel better, i breathe better, will fixing my posture will cure my problem or i have to take supplement
@@gourav9608 I'd never heard of LPR before, but have just had a quick read up on it.... That seems like one stage further than GERD. Not nice.... but yes the principle of good upright seating posture I feel would still give the same benefit as the LPR you suffer from also seems to have GERD as the root cause. I'm not medically trained, so I can't offer personal advice on your condition, I only use my own independent thought and then try to put it into practice, and in my case it paid off handsomely. Its not always easy to develop good seating posture, as when you're absorbed by your reading/viewing/gaming etc your mind loses focus on your posture and you will tend to slouch again, but if you feel even the first burning sensation of GERD then it should be uppermost in your mind to immediately assume an upright sitting position with your shoulders back... not uncomfortably so, but not slouched. I find for me that when I do that, more often than not I can get away without medication (my antacid "glug" as I call it). I've never taken omeprazole long term... only after any particular foods have triggered an acute attack of GERD (remember those foods and avoid them in future), and I've not taken any Omeprazole for over a year or more now. I've advised one or two work colleagues with reflux, and they seem to agree it has improved their condtion, so if correct posture helps ease your discomfort, then if it was me and after a while I felt able to lower my medication, I would personally go for it.... but please think carefully, and only do what YOU feel is best for YOU. As an aside, I also have my own regime and practice for easy "bowel movements", which when I related it to a friend who confided in me that he has suffered for years from diverticulitis, told me weeks later it had made a considerable difference to his life. The unfortunate side effect of me giving him that advice though is that he now calls me his "Poo Guru". Best of luck for the future.
I went very low carb, improved my blood sugar. Started weaning off the prevacid, reduced by skipping every other day for 2 weeks. Avoided caffiene, upped magnesium, then after 2 weeks skipped 2 days between pills for several weeks. Slept with hob elevated too. Had some gallbladder waking up pains, had to go to 3 smaller meals alternated with protein shakes, eventually got to 2 pills a week. Did that for a couple of months until the gallbladder pain dissipated then quit the pills. Still have and tenderness and gallstones but the severe chest pain/heartburn is gone. Eating mostly meat and fermented veg now and no longer diabetic.
Speaking of gallbladder, be careful. You might check thoroughly your gallbladder if does not stone and remove. In some cases, needs to remove the gallbladder. If the stone gets stuck, the gallbladder will inflamate, or burst and/or die necrose, and that's when the urgent surgery comes in place to save your life.
Short term keto diet made my GERD go away completely. I'm convinced now the sugars and flours that turn to sugars are the culpret. No more refined carbs for me unless I want my attacks to come back. It's my choice.
Dr . Hyman is such a great doctor, and so spot on! I had pretty bad acid reflux, and had been taking Lansoprazole WAY too long, and wanted to stop. I did research and realized that the fresh tomatoes I was eating every day, along with eggplant (night shades), and occasional mild spicy food were probably the culprit to my problems. I stopped eating tomatoes and anything with tomatoes, like spaghetti sauce and all the others I mentioned, and very rarely any sugar and NO processed foods, this stopped the acid reflux! At 78, I take no meds and try to treat everything holistically with good nutrition like eating an organic plant based diet, with a small portion of meat at dinner, and supplements like magnesium (which stopped my leg cramps!), I take Zinc, Amla (the best vitamin C available), and D3 to boost my immune system, and I haven't had the flu or a cold in over 20 years! If you listen to the TV commercials regarding the dangerous side effects of most medicines, like they may cause liver damage, cancer, etc., etc., or even death, then you think WHY would I even consider taking the med??? Follow Dr. Hymans advice and treat things with good nutrition and a healthy lifestyle and see how much better you feel! In 400 BC Hippocrates, the Father of medicine said, "Let food by the Medicine and Medicine by they food." He had it right over 2,000 years ago and then man messed things up with all of the junk food we now eat and toxic meds!!! A healthy lifestyle produces a healthy body! 😊💞
Thank you for this very informative message @ SuzyQ. I have been researching and I’m so glad I found this video and I also took notes from your post. As someone who has been suffering a long time I appreciate you taking the time. Thank you
Many reflux sufferers have told me giving up coffee and switching to an alkaline drink, like Teeccino (herbal coffee) helped them. Just putting it out there if you suffer!
I have a hiatus hernia which causes the oesophagus to pass through the diaphragm, I was on Omeprazole for years and weened myself off it as I thought it was causing me to be anaemic and high blood pressure. It turned out that I had internal bleeding caused by ulcers in my stomach and oesophagus, and that rather than come off Omeprazole I needed to increase the dosage. It turned out I had early stage Barrett’s oesophagus and the condition needed monitoring by having 3yearly endoscopies, so basically I’m in limbo, I worry that if the Barretts oesophagus isn’t managed then I could end up oesophageal cancer, so I’m reluctant to stop taking Omeprazole as you can imagine (even though I’d like to)

Instead of fighting the acidity of your gut, recruit it to do what its designed to do, digest meat. I stopped taking my acid reducer and proton pump inhibitor, and began a meat only diet. It takes a couple weeks to get your stomach back into shape, then the reflux is suddenly gone. I don't even sleep elevated anymore. Three weeks. Try it. Eat steak and eggs and butter only for three weeks in moderation. You will lose alot of water weight from bloat as well, I guarantee it feels 100% better.
I had acid for over 30 years, sometimes incredibly painful. Was diagnosed with prediabetes. Went Keto for 3 months. On day one, my acid disappeared. Now I'm low carb with the occasional carb blow out (Pizza, typically). I haven't had acid since I started my new diet. Reversed my prediabetes.
I didn’t cut anything I enjoyed, just stopped over eating, managed my stress, stopped eating before bed, drank water with baking soda because dehydration is the enemy here, sleep at an angle with my head very elevated and it cured me. Symptoms disappeared entirely. I’m completely cured. I also stopped taking the drugs when I found out what they were actually doing. Three small meals before 8 o clock. Sometimes Diet change isn’t the answer. Root cause for everyone is different, not every single person but there can be so many things wrong. Diet is just recommended because it seems to heal you to be healthier. Obviously healthy food helps with most issues
I find this advice helpful. So many recommendations for a carnivore diet which I know I just couldn't stomach (no pun intended). Smaller meals is a much better solution and I stop eating after 4pm every day anyway. Going to try the water with baking soda trick. thanks again. 👍

Our ancestors use to put out a relish tray at meals. Pickled foods. Now we know why. I have been eating more pickled foods like pickles before a meal and my heart burn has stopped. You can also drink a splash of ACV mixed with a little water just before a meal.
Yes me too, An miracle for me STOPPED my acid gastritis troubled Tablespoon apple cider vinegar and juice of 1/4 1/3 fresh lemon in 8 -10 Oz water, Emory stomach, half hour to one hour before meals, morning and afternoon. Huge immediate improvement so worth trying. I also add 1/2 tspn turmeric, pinch if black pepper,1/4 tspn ginger powder. I also added sauerkraut and fresh salds with a little olive oil / balsamic vinegar to our meals. Big improvement ,,, good luck

Mine was a combination of being overweight and eating late in the evening. I stopped eating sugar and refined carbs in May. Lost 2 stone but never eat after 9pm. Never had reflux since.
I had GERD for 20 years! It got to a point that freaking water gave me heartburn! Turns out I had low GOOD gut bacteria. Now, I eat more pro & prebiotics. Of course I stay away from SUGAR & Late night eating. Never a problem! If I do have an episode, I eat 2 or 3 heaping fork full of Sauerkraut or Kimchi and within 15 minutes heartburn is history!
I hope and pray you are doing better 🙏 I am too going thru this problem and I immediately made changes in my diet. I cut everything I mean EVERYTHING. Caffeine, gluten, dairy and sugar. I only eat steam fish or baked fish with extra steamed vegetables. Still no improvement. I am on Omeprazole 40mg today is day 5 and the pharmacist said it takes 2 weeks to see the effect. Anyhow I have several friends who never saw any improvement with Omeprazole but they did however saw immediate improvement with Pantoprazole which I may switch if no improvement in two weeks. I really don't want to be on any these meds so I am praying it is a temporary event. One thing I am doing is making a Papaya and aloe vera smoothie and I sprinkle 3 capsules of Slippery Elm to help me coat the stomach lining. But one thing that truly helped me and it was immediate improvement was drinking Alkaline water from Costco the Iodine Alkaline Water PH 9.5 + 😊 omg it soothe immediately to the extend that I didn't have to take my additional Tums pill so I am going to continue to drink it and see if it continues to help. 🙏 this is so hard and I pray everyone feels better by the grace of God 🙏♥️
My pharmacist also suggested Omperazole I’m reluctant taking it cz it decreases stomach acid which is already low on it so now I’m so confused I have no heartburn just feeling of food stuck in oesphagus
Thank you Dr Hyman. You confirmed my understanding and decision not to go with any medication , I am so scared to take anything because I get side effects easily. I stopped all the food that triggers the reflux and I feel much better. Physicians are taught to jump straight to prescriptions.
I used to eat way too much processed foods and drink coffee more than I care to admit. Me and my mom have been dealing with acid reflux for YEARSSSSSSSS. Gets to a point where I start getting a hoarse/raspy voice, I get a lumpy feeling in my chest, breathing gets shallow, throat tightens up, anxiety ensues etc. I stopped vaping, reduced caffeine to 1 cup a day, stopped processed foods all together, stopped eating late and started drinking 3L of water a day. When I tell you it helps...it really helps. It's all about changing your diet for a healthier one. ALSO there is a video by Dr. Mark Noar who swears behind his method. Get a spray bottle (similar to a nasal spray)...empty the contents and fill it with purified or alkaline water and baking soda. He says 1L of water and 2 tbsps of baking soda mixed. The ratio I use for my nasal spray is 0.004 tbs of baking soda in a 20ML spray bottle. Once mixed, I just use it all day (once every hour or 2). I do one spray per nostril (while breathing in) and 1-2 sprays in the back of the throat (while breathing in). Really helps.
Thank you for delving deeper into the root cause of heartburn and GERD. I’m almost 100% sure I have gerds I just had a son and it’s getting to the point where I’m experiencing a awful burning sensation in my stomach and throat all the time i find it happens when I get stressed out or physically stressed, pretty much every you’ve said makes a lot of sense because I live spicy food, coffee is a big one for me I love coffee but honestly if it means I won’t feel like crap anymore I can do away with it sugar I eat a lot of sugar again coffee and sugar go hand in hand, 2 or 3 cups off coffee a day can really compound over a short period of time and I also eat a lot of red meat particularly steak which I usually season the crap out of, it tastes like meaty heaven by the time I’m done. I’ve been getting more books on foraging a lot of common plants previously considered to be just weeds have been used for food and medicine. Unfortunately I live in Canada in the middle of a city so I don’t get to go out and out what I’ve learned into practice too often I’m obviously taking a safer approach in identification. I’m hoping I can make a major change in my life style but I think I need to try and get my girlfriend on board too if I’m going to fix the root cause of the problem.
I am 78 and now suffering. I was drinking black coffee first thing in the morning plus love spicey food. Drink water and stop the sugar too. Cancer of the eosophagus is something that you do not want to develop.
I am so shocked to see a functional medicine doctor not mention potentially one of the biggest root causes of reflux, which is that your stomach acid is too low. You need a low enough pH ie lots of acid in your stomach in order to keep that flap between your stomach and your esophagus closed. It works on a pressure gradient, and if you don’t have enough acid, it gets floppy and allows the acid from your stomach to go up into your esophagus, which is where you feel the heartburn pain. Your acid lowers as you age it lowers with stress, etc. Supplementing, under the care of a practitioner with HCL acid has completely reversed reflux and so many people. It should definitely be added to the list of things to look into when you’re trying to find the root cause.
Sometimes I have to stop eating meat for a couple of months to get rid of reflux. This happened to me recently and this time I also incorporated Dandelion teas, ginger tea and chamomile tea. This has helped so well! I’ve even been losing some weight. (But I also had to eat lots of veggies, fruit and very minimal to no sugar and processed food)
Long term PPI user here. No mainstream doctor ever helped me get off them. My eventual IBS has led me to functional medicine and root cause healing. 3mths into a change in diet and I am rarely having symptoms anymore!
My doctor told me to use PPIs for life and that was like 12 years ago. I thought he was crazy. Used Nexium just for 6 weeks and the problem largely went away...for years. Until now that is.
Something you said about "Not wanting to digest your food while being chased by a sabortooth tiger" made me think. I've always tried to make a calm environment while I'm eating but it should go beyond the time it takes to sit down and eat. Going right back to stressful job or situation after eating keeps you from digesting your food properly. ((((light-bulb-moment))))) Thanks for the sound advice.
Very valuable insight. I'd add that "using the body to calm the mind" (as opposed to trying to use the mind to calm itself) is generally more effective for humans; thus, doing activities like controlled breathing for five to ten minutes is likely to help us sufficiently relax for healthy digestion. Better yet, for the added benefit of burning off excess glucose in our blood (which contributes to all kind of short-term issues and long-term disorders like insulin resistance, diabetes, irritability, brain fog, and much more), we can do a light physical activity like walking "mindfully" (to get the added relaxation benefit) for 10 to 15 minutes directly after finishing any meal (something that I particularly aim for whenever I eat a meal that includes carbs).
@@kabsatdajaj Lying down after a meal is the worst thing you can do. After eating you need to sit up for at least 3 hours so your food doesn't reflux back up.

After being prescribed Omeprazole over 10 years ago and basically being left to carry on taking them with no intervention from a GP I fully agree with the flaw in the medical care system, we have to realise that it is both cheaper and easier for a GP to simply prescribe a medication to supress a symptom rather than invest the time with a patient to find the route cause of a problem and solve it that way. Over the years I have tried many things to solve my issues with GERD including some lifestyle and diet changes but still have not managed to really solve it without the dependency I have on medication, recently I have found evidence linking stress and general wellbeing to acid balance problems and I am hoping that easing this along with further lifestyle and diet changes can help me find a resolution to the condition that has severely impacted my life for the last decade. Thank you for this video and some further insight into acid reflux.
THE ANSWER: APPLE CIDER VINEGAR. This will eliminate acid reflux 95%+. One full tablespoon with water (4-8oz.) and again in the evening. (Add lemon juice to cut down the vinegar flavor if desired). All it takes is literally 1-2 days to work!
Everything he says, I was recently told by Nutrician, I’ve been suffering with this for a few years, on pantoprazole prescribed after scope by Gastroenterologist. Everything this Dr says in video is spot on!
Awesome advice, my problem was biliary reflux caused by motility issues like Dr mentioned. Taking medicine is all good and well but effective supplementation and elimination diets worked best for me. A little tip if (like me) you find quitting coffee hard, oat milk (for beta-glucan) and a bit of ginger if you're going to have it works great and you will quickly get used to the flavors.
I got acid reflux and multiple pneumonias from acid reflux that I didn't know I had. I would come home from work and eat Knors Mexican Rice and lie down on the sofa on my left side and sleep. Later I found out that Mexican Rice has powdered Jalapeno peppers in it. Anyway, 13 years later I'm still dealing with breathing problems from GERD due to that.
A man from latin America told me that insufficient acidity caused malfunction of the stomach that resulted in heartburn. He told me to drink straight undiluted juice from a lemon to boost stomach acidity. It sounded very unlikely but i had to face the truth that losers follow assumptions while winners test the assumptions instead of acting on assumptions. So i tried the lemon juice AND I COULD FEEL BUBBLES POPPING AS IT PASSED DOWN MY PASSAGE. Then i realized that the low acidity was allowing bubble formation which permitted digestive fluids to contact the passage area above the stomach. I used this awhile and the symptoms reduced over time. Now i take lemon juice 2-3 nights per year. That was 30 years ago. Thank you God.
There’s also an amazing herb in Brazil called Espinheira Santa, which not only stops acid reflux, but all kinds of stomach pain or issues. A doctor in Brazil asked my elderly friend there to take twice a day for her pain. I was having both. Acid Reflux and Pain. Stopped! As simple as that!

PPI's destroyed my digestive system. I wasn't digesting foods (I had the proof, believe me) well at all and my LPR became dependant on it. Not until I got the courage to add HCL along with a digestive multi-enzymes did my LPR start to fade and simply by working on my gut health fixed my problem. I will NEVER take an acid stopper or reducer again.
@@marilynwilson618 yes, about a week and then a couple days with only gaviscon to give me a little relief before starting the HCL. There may be a few different reasons people get LPR. In my case the HCL helped and I now am feeling good while continuing on a relatively gut-happy diet.
I actually hear a lot of interesting critical discussion about fighting GERD. The problem is, the moment I go to a physician, all they know is prescribing PPIs
Exactly!! my Dr pushed it on me for years and then the last time I saw him right before he retired, he told me not to take the PPI "they are not good for you" he said...
That seems to be all they know how to do about everything. Instead of doing what’s best for the body they prescribe a pill. I wonder if they even know about apple cider vinegar or any of these things! It certainly worked for me and I had been onpills for years for acid reflux. We need to educate our doctors!

I was able to go from severe GERD to having my reflux gone within a few days. Now two months later I'm dealing with the underlying causes while being and to not have reflux and heal. If you don't have a hiatal hernia or some other musculoskeletal issue. Then you likely have low stomach acid. This low stomach acid isn't giving your LES the signal to close tightly. If you've gone this long, then you very likely have a bacterial or candida overgrowth in your stomach and intestines. You must get your LES to close first. Usually from adding betaine hydrochloride with meals. I had to take 4,000 mg per meal just to get rid of my reflux. Now I'm finally starting to wean off since the antimicrobials (oregano oil capsule I filled myself, Canxida Remove, Canxida restore, completely eliminating sugar from my diet for two weeks) Once you see all kick it naturally videos, then move on over to Canxida channel on RUclips to know high how kill the bad microbes. 1. Get stomach properly acidified to get reflux to stop 2. Eliminate all real and fake sugar (small amounts of honey are okay I think) 3. Start an anti bacterial and anti candida regimen (NOT Rx's) natural herbs and extracts. Canxida ingredient list has them all 4. After 1-3 months, you should be able to slowly reduce taking betaine hydrochloride as your stomach acid is now able to keep up without the microbes neutralizing all your acid I hope you can find relief. This is good advice unless the acid is caused by a hiatal hernia. I just went through two radio frequency ablations to remove Barrett’s tissue. The doctor told me that if I don’t get the hernia repaired, I would be coming back to have more Barrett’s removed, over and over again. At age 72, I’m not prepared for a surgery that is both thoracic and abdominal. The recovery is lengthy and comes with a liquid diet and no workouts for weeks. I do follow your advice. No sugar, no ultra processed food. I don’t eat after 7PM. I’m not ready for the weeks of recovery that comes with hiatal surgery so I do take an acid blocker every morning. My PCM checks my blood annually to check for nutrient deficiencies. I also work out 5 days per week with moderate weights and maintain 25% body fat. Been taking omeprazole for 10 years and my last colonoscopy was clear and I have no issues with the stomach, except the hernia. I had a very weird situation, my acid did not show any symptoms in my stomach, but my throat was all the time red and itchy. Like everyone else, I thought it was just some virus, but then it was ok and again came back many times. I realized something was not right, so I went to the doctor. Turned out I had reflux, so she gave me an Esomeprazole-based drug. But I did not take it and as many doctors here including Mark suggest not to block acid. I will try to sort this out with healthy choices, cut coffee, and alcohol, hopefully, it will work. Because it is easy to swallow a pill that does not treat the main problem.
Wow, this is me, no stomach symptoms but I have had on and off throat and ear issues, and 4 weeks ago I had to rush to ER with laryngo-spasms! ER dr was baffled, chest & neck X-rays ok. The dry cough has persisted, wanes some then flares up. Today I did my research- there is a rarer form that causes head/neck symptoms rather than stomach ones, it affects the upper esophageal sphincter. I had seen ENT before and they suggested TMJ. Back then I had only ear and throat discomfort, dismissed by several doctors till I went via ER. I do all the wrong things- my cultural diet plus the Indian one I adopted a few years ago are full of tomato, onions, garlic and spices. I am a shift worker and eat at wrong times all the time. and I have put on some extra kilos recently. I will see the Dr this week, may take pills initially because my throat is really angry right now and I am a little hoarse, but plan is to go it the lifestyle change way! Best wishes to you!

Doc, what about the recommendation to take Apple Cider Vinegar (.. that the stomach is not making enough acid thus causing the stomach sphincter to stay open ) ??
Long term use of PPI makes GERD worse but I got myself off the PPI slowly…baking soda water helped, fennel seeds etc. then started introducing digestive enzymes with HCL. To get rid of acid reflux, try eating red or Fuji apples. My wife and I had acid reflux before and we used those apples to treat the problem after a friend recommended them. It worked and the problem never came back,
After years I fixed my reflux. Like many I followed all the rules, what to eat, what not to eat, supplements, apple cider vinegar, sleep positions etc. Nothing worked. I eventually did a very very detail spreadsheet of everything I ate and at what time and the time I had reflux. It wasn't until I got several weeks of this before I notice that my reflux would always happen at night and on nights when I drank a hot beverage. That's something I like to do around 9 or 10pm especially in the winter. I guess now that I'm older something changed. My guess is that the hot beverage is relaxing the sphincter muscle keeping the stomach closed and my body is in the midst of digesting my dinner. So when I drink my tea, the acid leaks out. I decided to test this with just warm water and sure enough it wasn't the tea but just hot liquids. So I went back to eating all the things I shouldn't for heartburn and now I'm fine. I noticed that if I wait 4-5 hours after meals the hot beverage won't be a problem.
Dr. Hyman - this was eye-opening. I a good-health-enthusiast and was hooked right at the beginning when you talked about citrus foods, tomato-based foods, spicy foods, sometimes even eggs being a culprit for my acid reflux. I will try lessening those foods one at a time and see if it helps. I also take a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar before each meal (2 times a day). Don't know if that helps or hurts. Many thanks for all of the great health information you provide.
Yeah I tend to believe this is what happens, because I know I classically have low stomach acid, even tho now its rising up with gerd symptoms, which also makes me a little afraid of taking ACV and HCL supps...
My mother started getting acid reflux after getting a pacemaker. Now if she eats anything acidic, fatty or spicy she passes out then comes to and vomits. She started getting it yesterday after a tiny piece of fat that was in her meat. I noticed her panting so quickly gave her a double strength Mylanta then it stopped and she was burping and hickuping. Thank God she did not pass out this time. It has been a lot of trial, error and stress. I have psoriasis on my neck & scalp. I used to have debilitating body aches in old injuries until I stopped eating bread. I no longer have the aches as much now. It was getting to the stage I could hardly walk. The difference has been miraculous.
@@johnotto989 We have seen a specialist. I have changed her diet and she has been good. I have bad scalp psoriasis. It drives me nuts. We mainly eat fruits, salads (no dressing) and grilled chicken. I tried tissue salts but they did not agree with me. I have weird high blood pressure and numbness around the right eye sometimes. I cut out grains and it fixed my back problems and soreness.
I have pain in my chest after I eat or drink certain stuff. Its been a few years now suffering like this, i went to the hospital, all they gave was anti acid. On my own i stopped everything that makes me suffer to an extreme level. I stopped all drink or flavoured water that has bubbles in it. I cant eat cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, wafer biscuits, whipped cream, chops from the barbecue, apricot jam, brown bread, certain beans, tomato sauce, rolls or buns, viennas or hotdogs, I starve myself most of the time because i already know the pain i feel after eating and drinking is so bad, i also burp a lot after eating, i struggle to swallow my spit and i lost my appetite to live, gave up on the doctors in my country, they are quick to take your money and quicker to get you out their doctors room, you go home and you still have the problem years later, the anti acid never ever helped so i stopped taking it. I give up😢
I pray in the name of Jesus that you get healed of this horrible pain. I also suffer with gerd and this is the worst it’s ever been. It’s very hard to eat most foods without feeling tired and not breathing well. I pray you get a good diet and that God blesses your life with solutions❤️
Feel for you. I too have this so trying to drink way more water, sit up straight at the computer, sleep on two pillows, no coffee or tea or wine or spices... very boring. You must be your own doctor. Please check our the gerd doctors on line.
So Nexium withdrawal causes rebound acid reflux hey? THANKS for mentioning that, I'll try weaning myself off it more slowly this time. That was really good advice.
Proton pump inhibitors work very well. However, they can cause vulnerability to C. Difficile infection, which leads to many deaths every year. Many doctors now recommend that patients stop taking PPI's at least a full week prior to entering a hospital, to allow the stomach acid time to recover. That stomach acid is an important line of defense, and PPI's impair your body's defences.
PPIs also delay gastric emptying causing food to rot in your stomach, and eventually leads to SIBO which is what I have now. This has a knock on effect on the colon as well. Doctors are too quick to fire from the hip like Wild West Cowboys without even bothering to figure out the root cause of our acid reflux issues. In my case, I suspect calcium channel blockers (which affect the hiatus sphincter) started my issues off...
Did you have your esophagus check to see it your Acid Reflux is cured???? And how long did it take for you to take noticed , that you have no more reflux ???
My wife and I used to have the same problem because of acid reflux. Try eating red or Fuji apples. They are natural remedies which can neutralize too much acid in the stomach. You will not have to worry on what to eat anymore.
Nexium for years but still ended up with oesaphagus cancer - removed with Ivor Lewis operation. Nexium wrecked my kidneys. Fat people suffer reflux but I was slim. Still managed 21 years post operation. An apple seems to help calm things.
Love your videos, I'm happy to subscribe! Recently, after a full cardiac workup in an ER, I was told that my radiating chest pain and nausea (and headaches too!) are due to acid reflux. A new drug was added to my already 6-drugs-per-day regimen. I wondered why I should take another drug every day for a condition that only affects me (badly enough to worry about) maybe once a month? So I started with Dr. Google (where else?) and looked up the side effects of my beta blocker, ARB, calcium channel blocker, Metformin, anti-spasmodic for my bladder and an anti-diarrheal, and guess what? ALL OF THEM CAN CAUSE NAUSEA AND HEADACHES. So I was already caffeine-free; I haven't smoked cigarettes in 30 years, and I don't drink alcohol EVER. And I've been on a low acid diet for my bladder for the past three years: nothing spicy, no tomatoes, citrus or artificial sweeteners. So it must be the drugs! Most of you damned doctors are all quickdraw artists with the prescription pads, yet NOT ONE OF MY 5 DOCTORS HAS EVER GRANTED A REFERRAL TO A NUTRITIONIST OR DIETITIAN! EVEN AFTER I ASKED FOR ONE! I've waded through tons of confusing info, only to determine that, for my hypertension, type 2 diabetes, bladder issues, and random bursts of diarrhea caused by frequent antibiotics for UTIs, I should be eating nothing but tree bark and sand. But not too much tree bark, it's all fiber, which is carbs...! So I've switched to lactose-free, lowfat milk and reduced the amount down to one pint (yes, I measure 16 ozs.) a day, from 5 gallons a week. No other dairy except for nonfat, lactose-free and sugar-free yogurt, a 5.3 oz. cup every day. No ice cream, chocolate candy, pasta, crackers, bread, gravy, potatoes, rice, ... can't eat much fruit bc of the sugars. No happy stuff. I have no appetite. I'm taking roadtrips over the major holidays; California is beautiful in the fall and winter, and I don't want to be anywhere near other people who are enjoying real food. So this is now a social issue for me, as well as a physical one! I wonder how well I'll eat on the road...?
To elaborate on Frankie's comment, fasting can put you into a state where your cells start to break down and then rebuild themselves. An extremely healthy process. Check it out, intermittent fasting and perhaps for a few days at a time. Good luck with all of your stuff.
You were drinking up to 5 gallons of milk per week?! No wonder you had all those issues. That can’t be good for anybody. Holy cow! Pun intended. You are a human not a calf😂🐮
Blueberries are great for the gut. Just found this out yesterday by researching. I’ve started with the blueberries with a tiny bit of coconut sugar and it actually feels soothing to my stomach. I drink lemon water every morning also.
Does anyone have more acid reflux and gets super hungry if don’t eat before going to bed? No matter how much I eat for dinner if I don’t eat after 7 I get super acidic and hungry during sleep hour ? What is the cause for this and how to treat ?
My wife and I used to suffer from acid reflux years ago. I got it from drinking too much fruit juice in bottles and my wife from drinking too much coffee and plus we like eating spicy foods also. A friend at the church suggested that we should try eating red or Fuji apples to treat the problem. It worked and the problem never came back. Now we don't have to worry on what to eat and what to drink no more. We found a natural cure in apples. I think any apple will work except for green which might be acidic.
@@rodrigobalibalita12 I ate those apples , it didn't see like it worked for me . Just keep after your acid reflux , it could come back if you don't eat right . You might not of had it very bad , not like the rest of us . I buy organic apples.
I’ve been there open, horrible nighttime heartburn). The op hit the nail on the head.. There are many things or a combination of things that keep your system out of whack. First, Google the elimination diet to see if you have a food intolerance or a food allergy that is causing your problems.. But no matter what the case, if you eliminate most processed foods (especially sugar), and get your fiber (oatmeal, vegetables, brown rice, you will be much better off. Processed foods and sugar, feed the bad bacteria, and everything goes south from there.. I still take an H2 blocker if I suspect heartburn might come on at night, but I’ve mostly weaned myself off of the need for heartburn medicine (I’m 65 years old, and it feels amazing to not have to take heartburn medicine anymore).. Fixing your heartburn is much more about eliminating the bad things (listed in the video), taking a pill might give you temporary relief or get you through the night, but that’s no way to live.. now that I’ve eliminated processed foods (really hard to do eating at restaurants, read the labels. When you grocery shop, ingredients should be things you understand); - now I am able to have many things on the heartburn list, such as coffee and fruit juice (in moderation of course, without heartburn. Over time with a healthy diet (more natural foods / getting your fiber), your body, and your stomach will get stronger and stronger. When sugar and processed foods, feed the bad bacteria, the mucin in your gut does not do its job, which leads to inflammation, which leads to many bad things, one of which is heartburn..
Thank you all for your feedback and advice. I do not suffer from this condition but I'm very interested in finding root causes. One that I did not hear about is a Hiatial Hernia. This can cause as it reflux or GERD and all the symptomalogy discussed. It's asymptomatic and when left untreated can cause these symptoms as well. I have a 73 year old relative who I've monitoring his progression and I feel his condition is a chronic one. He has changed his diet, lifestyle and abstained from triggering foods but his persistent voice changes tells me it could be longstanding. One thing that caught my eye was him recently developing pneumonia. I understand there's a correlation between long-standing GERD and pneumonia in some patients. He's now finished with his antibiotic regimen (Cipro) and is waiting to reassess his progress. The treatment left him weak and in need of recovering and his gut microbiome has suffered. In the near future we plan on assessing his microbiota through Genova Diagnostics to rule out bacterias and check for a Hiatial Hernia.
@@trudyhattendorf1821 h pylori Never take over the counter medicine , even if you got rid of H Pylori , it can come back again . Then you would have to take 3 ( triple ) antibiotics to get rid of it again .......
Everybody has different trigger foods. You’ll have to tailor your diet to suit yourself. For me, though, I cut out pasta, rice, bread, potatoes, I don’t eat many vegetables at all, in fact, going carnivore did it for me, but I like the idea of a more keto diet going forward.
So grateful Mark, thank You for your Wilson, I’m suffering from Silent reflux, going to make some serious changes thank you for the sensible helpful content!!
Stopping PPI may be good advise for many. For those with Barrett's Esophagus, a precancerous condition, it may not be best. Sometimes it's a balance between PPI side effects vs cancer. But the dietary changes he discussed are good.
@@carolyncumming4277 I have Barretts too and my dr. wanted me to take a PPI and after researching I said no way. I just do my best with nutrition which is not always easy as we all know.
I also drink fresh aloe vera mixed with water and a little fruit in the AM. And an hour later I make a raw spirulina smoothie with protein powder, spinach, flax seeds, mango and banana. You can also cut the acid in coffee by adding either a pinch of baking soda or Javacid.
Dr. Hyman. I've been taking Nexium for 15 years and every MD I've seen has told me that its fine. I only just learned last week while reading through some medical journals how bad it is for me. That's how I found this video. I have many health issues including Hashimoto's and I cant help but feel FAILED by the medical system. So i spend a lot of my free time reading anecdotal evidence and medical journals to try to learn more to help myself. In my experience, Dr's are vending machines for the pharmaceutical companies. I wish i could be seen by you
Unfortunately, that's how most of the medical system is. You might have a nerve in your back that has too much pressure on it. You could go to a gonstead chiropractor and that should fix the issue. Sounds silly but think about it. If a nerve is being cut off then it won't be able to reach certain areas to do its job.
What do you do if you have acid reflux or more like gastritis if you have too little stomach acid? I have often been told that that can give the same symptoms and it is more common to have too little stomach acid when you get older (I am 65).
Catharine, a study out of Missouri, ( pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/9272898/ ) found that only 11% of older adults actually had too little stomach acid production. That means almost 90% have no issue at all. This is an uncommon problem, despite many doctors' belief that it affects all older adults. My wife was told she needed to take 1000 mcg of vitamin B12 every day, the very day she turned 65. Why? Because "older adults can't absorb B12 properly". I did my research and found that only 6% of older adults actually have a clinical problem with their B12 uptake. We told the doctor she needs to stop trying to treat non-existent conditions in her healthy patients. My wife has no desire to be a guinea pig.
I say if you are for sure you have little stomach acid, then incorporate in your diet foods which can increase acid. In most case like what me and my wife had experienced is we used to ate too much spicy foods, drank too much coffee and bottled fruit juices such as orange, grapes, etc. Finally we had acid reflux. After we started eating red and Fuji apples the problem gradually gone in a couple of days.Amazing the problem never came back and plus we don't have to worry on what to eat or drink no more. We found the cure.
I’m dealing with the same thing. Just diagnosed with BE last October. On a low acid diet, no alcohol, coffee, tea, citrus, tomatoes, spicy foods, onions, garlic, the list goes on. My Dr. told me I will be on a PPI forever. I actually think I made things worse by trying to get off my PPI last summer, which didn’t work anyway, then scoped and diagnosed with Barrett’s. Trying to focus on what I can eat instead of what I can’t because this is no fun 😢
magnesium bisglycinate and omega 3 supplements really helped me with sleep/anxiety/stress which most of the time triggered my reflux. still have to work on my trigger foods especially caffeinated drinks, my kryptonite as they are hard to avoid :) and lose weight! I stayed away from ppi's as they made things worse for me.
Getting off Dexalant which was only one left that worked . Can’t cut it in half since it’s a capsule but eliminating dairy and gluten and nightshades and going carnivore no sugar and I have elevated the the head of my bed and taking HCL Betaine and Thiamine and no coffee now but mushroom type and maybe green tea no more consumption near bedtimes now either I MUST DO this 🎉
If it is chronical condition, the chances are that diaphragm has one not working properly side and another one in hypertonus ( working for both sides). This condition creates shifting of all structures are going through the diaphragm. This is the result of hernias ( permanent, sliding) and related to them acid reflux.
Having acid reflux is annoying! I've been suffering for the last 2 days with it and haven't had anything to eat. The doctor prescribed Famotidine for me which I haven't taken because of the side effects. I never like to take any medicine not even Tylenol.
I take 1/8 tsp baking soda with half glass water and instantly neutralizes the acid. Take it everyday. I hope that's not bad. Do not take medication for it. Also, butter, bananas, lots of caffein, smoking(do not know how to quit), eggs, (no alcohol), carbonated drinks(can't swallow) a few things that give this.
Lowering the acid in your stomach can actually have the opposite effect and push it to generate more. If you stop, you might end up with more reflux than ever before, which is what happens to people who take anti-acids. It's best to know the cause and address it.
Thank you so much Dr Emovon on RUclips for all your hard work and support during this difficult time. Your humility, kindness, and strength are greatly appreciated. Keep being best doctor that you are.. for helping me get rid of my acid reflux problem totally....
Thanks for letting me know about low magnesium causing the sphincter not to close and low-stomach acid. It's great to understand what happens inside and what I can do naturally. ☺
I have a hiatal hernia, too, and have been taking PPI drugs for many years. I’ve been doing the keto diet, intermittent fasting and gluten free for two months now and have no more GERD. I quit cold turkey! I tried the ACV before all of this and it didn’t work for me, but now that I’ve changed my lifestyle, I’m able to drink it with no problems.
Heartburn and acid reflux are caused by low digestive enzymes; your body compensates by secreting HCl, which is what causes indigestion and eventually acid reflux. So to stop acid reflux you should supplement with digestive enzymes.
Tu for your information! I love to read comments on this subject, I have had this mess for years. I read another person said to get that and also betaine hcl.hope this helps.

That is true.
Thank you for your comment.
Thanks for this information.
i suffer from lpr and whenever i sit straight i feel better, i breathe better, will fixing my posture will cure my problem or i have to take supplement
I suggest looking up carnivor diet. There is few videos on RUclips.
The Carnivore code book by Paul Saladino.

True…very few come out in open to emphasise the importance

For acid reflux try eating red or Fuji apples. It worked for me and my wife. They are natural remedies and should work for you also.
Physicians are taught to jump straight to prescriptions.
stop gluten dairy sugar and ultraprocessed foods, your sensitivity might become less.
How has this worked for you in last yr? I saw this video just this past wk that you mentioned. Thanks
Cancer of the eosophagus is something that you do not want to
develop.
Exactly..APPLE CIDER VINEGAR will fix the weak acid causing reflux pretty fast but Dr's don't prescribe non pharma drugs..Only anti acids.
Me too, how long were you on them for? How are you feeling now?
They say new evidence PPI cause dimentia
My doctor told me to use PPIs for life and that was like 12 years ago. I thought he was crazy. Used Nexium just for 6 weeks and the problem largely went away...for years. Until now that is.
Something you said about "Not wanting to digest your food while being chased by a sabortooth tiger" made me think. I've always tried to make a calm environment while I'm eating but it should go beyond the time it takes to sit down and eat. Going right back to stressful job or situation after eating keeps you from digesting your food properly. ((((light-bulb-moment)))))
Thanks for the sound advice.
I try to take ten or so min after the meal to lie down or just recline in a chair and look up at nothing or close my eyes and breath deep.

I can help u out... Tell me what ur diet routine and ingredients. Hopefully u will never need antiacid medicine again
Dr. Hyman is really amazing. His passion and dedication is inspiring.
Just change ur diet.... U dont need anti acids medicines
Where can we get it? I am in the USA.

My primary causes: chocolate, especially when I’m eating it in bed at 3am. Secondarily, orange juice. My two loves.
Did you slowly wein off your rx?
@@marilynwilson618 yes, about a week and then a couple days with only gaviscon to give me a little relief before starting the HCL. There may be a few different reasons people get LPR. In my case the HCL helped and I now am feeling good while continuing on a relatively gut-happy diet.
I actually hear a lot of interesting critical discussion about fighting GERD. The problem is, the moment I go to a physician, all they know is prescribing PPIs

After 10+ years on Omeprozole per my Dr, I have just learned about the long-term effect. This video is very helpful as I make the plunge into using my diet to control my GERD. thank you.
I suffered from GERD for 10 solid days, took Omep for 3 days, and then got bad again. Only to find out that d-limonene, betaine hcl, and bile salts would finally give me relief. Thankfully I was only on the Omep for a few days. Today I took none. But I'll keep doing the DL, betaine, and bile salts, and Beet flow until I can get things back in balance. I don't wish GERD on my worst enemies. Wow it's terrible.
I know I need to watch the video again but could you elaborate a bit because I've had GERD for three months and it's crazy horrible with acid flowing up esophagus and now esophagus is all burnt I guess? I'm having coughing fits to where it ends up throwing up acid. I feel like there is a monster living inside of me. I'm barely eating. I can only do yougart, shakes and broths because my esophagus hurts so badly. I never knew GERD is a thing. What does taking these things look like , when and how much?
@@ZFern9390 OMG I'm so sorry to hear this. If it need direct simple fixes to get your healing started, I would highly recommend go look at the videos from kick it naturally on RUclips.
Now I'm finally starting to wean off since the antimicrobials (oregano oil capsule I filled myself, Canxida Remove, Canxida restore, completely eliminating sugar from my diet for two weeks)
Once you see all kick it naturally videos, then move on over to Canxida channel on RUclips to know high how kill the bad microbes.
1. Get stomach properly acidified to get reflux to stop
2. Eliminate all real and fake sugar (small amounts of honey are okay I think)
3. Start an anti bacterial and anti candida regimen (NOT Rx's) natural herbs and extracts. Canxida ingredient list has them all
4. After 1-3 months, you should be able to slowly reduce taking betaine hydrochloride as your stomach acid is now able to keep up without the microbes neutralizing all your acid
I hope you can find relief. Please read this comment a few times to make sure you really understand.
Other considerations are needed if you have hiatal hernia or have had your gallbladder removed. Kick it naturally has videos on everything.

Big thing is watch your diet, stay in shape, and monitor your blood work.
I will try some of these. I have been trying to get off omeprazole for years. I hope this helps.

I had a very weird situation, my acid did not show any symptoms in my stomach, but my throat was all the time red and itchy. Like everyone else, I thought it was just some virus, but then it was ok and again came back many times. I realized something was not right, so I went to the doctor.

Like an apple a day?
@@GwendolynGraves It is a natural food and I don't see any harm in having it as part of diet. An apple a day keeps acid reflux away.

Fasting has wonderful properties.
Our doctors are ran by big pharma and they want to treat us not cure us
To elaborate on Frankie's comment, fasting can put you into a state where your cells start to break down and then rebuild themselves.
Very good because Deeply concerned about it
Does anyone have more acid reflux and gets super hungry if don’t eat before going to bed? No matter how much I eat for dinner if I don’t eat after 7 I get super acidic and hungry during sleep hour ? What is the cause for this and how to treat ?
rt - i have the exact same thing. i'll be fine until literally bedtime sometimes and then theres a ton of acid all of a sudden
Lemonade works for me. Counter intuitive I know, but it gets rid of my acid reflux.
Interesting defo the h hernia good luck
Possibly check for H-plyroria, not sure it's spelled correctly but I believe it's close. Heard it could be a culprit too, causing acid reflux
Yes, it sure does

Wow am so happy for you❤❤❤❤❤
Please can you tell me or list the type of food you were eating that improved your acid reflux condition????🙏🙏🙏🤝🙏🙏🙏
So grateful Mark, thank
You for your Wilson, I’m suffering from Silent reflux, going to make some serious changes thank you for the sensible helpful content!!
Stopping PPI may be good advise for many. For those with Barrett's Esophagus, a precancerous condition, it may not be best. Sometimes it's a balance between PPI side effects vs cancer. But the dietary changes he discussed are good.
I have that and do NOT want to take medication. Cancer risk is also minimised by correct diet and I am relying on that.
Does protein powder not increase your GERD?

Dr.
Most MDs don’t go after the problem. They just prescribe you something to deal with the symptoms. That’s why it’s called “medicine” and not “health”
Dont use anti acid... Just correct ur diet
@@syedumair6040 "correc ur diet". What does that mean? lol
People find relief from many different diets, keto, low acid. Everyone is different.
Thanks, wonderful advice clear! No Drugs! ❤
I take straight apple cider vinegar (through a straw- protect your teeth), but it's not pleasant. Betaine Hydrochloride tablets are easier.
Take spoon of apple cider vinegar every day
I say if you are for sure you have little stomach acid, then incorporate in your diet foods which can increase acid.
@@rodrigobalibalita12Do you have an explanation as to why eating apples helped reduce or eliminate your symptoms? I will try this.
It's the flap to the stomach not working properly. Known this for decades. M all rights reserved
Just quit eating and drinking everything there is you should be fine
I agree with you
Hi Dr Hyman, can you address the treatment options when Acid reflux turns into Barrets, and how to prevent it from getting worst?
This is the result of hernias ( permanent, sliding) and related to them acid reflux.
how to a person heal Hiatal Hernia ????? Thank you
Having acid reflux is annoying!
Please stop doing that every day. Baking soda causes high blood pressure
Lowering the acid in your stomach can actually have the opposite effect and push it to generate more. If you stop, you might end up with more reflux than ever before, which is what happens to people who take anti-acids. It's best to know the cause and address it.
Baking soda destroys vitamin B..look it up..🇨🇦
Any proof.. Its not Salt?

Heartburn and acid reflux are caused by low digestive enzymes; your body compensates by secreting HCl, which is what causes indigestion and eventually acid reflux. So to stop acid reflux you should supplement with digestive enzymes.
