can anyone tell me if it is better to use a knot or some form of connector to connect the braid to florocarbon
I think knot its better if you can tie a proper one,slimer profile

Are you limited to fishing right at your feet with a drop shot?
No! You can cast away and retrieve making small twitches upwards alternated with some pauses. Sometimes make the lure go un and down more frantically. It might cause fish to bite!🙃😉
