Love the review! Have to say, such a badass move putting on the cruse control, flicking the passenger pegs down and riding the pillion seat down a not very strait section of road.
For a “retro-influenced” bike, those were some interesting changes to move the rider position down and leaning more forward, but by your assessment, it seems to have improved the overall experience. Thanks for another great review, Zack.
@DennisJPolsen. I’ve an original Rd 250 air cooled. The riding position on this Xsr is very similar. In the day, most of us fitted clubman bars to make it even lower. What isn’t original is the sheer amount of power the XSR has, amazing handling and brakes that work haha.
@@DennisJPolson Absolutely, but scary handling and braking compared to the xsr. It also loves drinking petrol. Strange they compare new xsr to old, because the xsr will blow the rd’s away power wise. I still cover the clutch on the modern bikes though haha.
I agree, add the giggle scale to the daily ride. Glad you are honest about it’s turning radius it matter when making a purchase decision. Another great video Zack!

Coming from a current 2022 CB1000R rider - I can confirm that back-to-back, the XSR900 is "more rowdy and less refined" than the Honda, but as a 42 year old with a few bikes, the Honda is my pick for daily riding to work and maybe hitting the mountains after work on on the weekend (live in the Denver suburbs)
I'm going between which of the two I want to buy. I really like the styling of both. The biggest two reasons I'm leaning towards the xsr instead is price, and cruise control
Im 63 and chose this over the MT09 becourse of the longer swingarm. Its more stabel and not so flicki. Its so fun to ride, så,i can really recomand it. 🤩👍

It's the generalistic, and typically unbiased views. Add in the fact he's responsible (for the most part, sometimes he gets a bit wild) and he's an all around decent seeming dude. I'd ride with him or ask him for advice any day.
That's a great point you bring up about the lower gear fueling. I was literally just riding my 2020 MY today and crushing corners in 2nd gear, it's an absolute blast of a bike and I don't think I'll upgrade now!
I don't like that gap between the seat and the tank and I think it could be problematic and looks weird. You're the only reviewer that even mentioned it, thank you. Maybe it's not a big deal, I have not seen this bike yet, let alone ride one. It's on my radar though, I like the relatively light weight.
Thanks Zack for the amazing review. I've been waiting for this since Yamaha announced it early this year. And also the badass move flicking the cruise control to test the passenger seat and pegs and picking up the trash, hahaha AMAZING!
I got a 2021 Can Am Spyder in November. It has the 1330 Rotax motor. Pretty fast and fits my needs to a tee!!! I have been ridding 2 wheelers for my whole life. About 5 years ago I had a major stroke, a blood vessel in my head popped and I had 3 brain surgeries and spent the next 9 months in rehab and recovery. I recovered quite well, better than most. God was with me! Thank you lord. Well, I saw the Can Am at a customers shop and thought that might be my answer to getting back in the wind!!!! Yea baby!!! The only problem I have is my balance is not so good as it was in the past. No problem with the 3 wheel bike.
I daily ride a 2018 XSR900 all year round and the answer is yes you can definitely use it as a daily commuter. Never had an issue with the snatchy throttle in all conditions. 24k Smiles and counting.
@@gavin3810 Yep! Got her going to the shop next week. The backup bike will get some loving in the meanwhile since I also plan to yoink out the ECU and get it tuned.
I'd prefer one in black, it's more subtle and less colour mismatch. If I had to own one, I'd possibly add foam to the riders seat and maybe even go over the trim behind the tank. Regarding electronics... Traction control, yes. Slide control, indifferent. Wheelie control, definately and independent of any TC settings... And race ABS with front brake only, please! I haven't ridden the XSR but ridden the '22 MT09 quite a few times. One thing the blipper could benefit from, is being enabled with a cracked throttle, similar to a Tuono. Fun bikes otherwise...
While I tend to prefer the blackout looks different bikes have instead of chrome, I'm digging the gold color manufacturers use on their rims and such as an alternative to chrome. Not my style of bike but I really like the blue and gold Yamaha went with on this bike. Kawasaki also has something nice with the green and gold on some of their bikes.
Awesome vid Zach, I would really appreciate a quick rundown on headlight performance. For myself and many others, half our commute is in the dark so that would be a great addition to this awesome series!
It's a sweet looking bike. I couldn't go back to a 200kg, $10,000 bike after getting a 104kg enduro though. Half the weight is so much more fun to throw around.

MSRP: $9,999. Dealer markups, these are over $12,000 now, if you can find one… my issue with that is you can buy a new Monster 950 for that money (my Ducati dealer refuses to up-charge on bikes, a reason they get my business), which handles 10x better and has the lovely Ducati V twin sound track.
Love the analog twin gauges of Z900RS.Overall Kawasaki is way better looking and even better sounding machine. What puts me off XSR900 is the dash.Wished Yamaha had more traditional looking gauges.

I always liked the look of the black and yellow old school Yammi colorway on the XSR. You should be able to roll those bars forward and grind the stops down for better turning radius.
oh man, I am a lurker, this is my first comment, watched all your stuff and it is the best on the RUclipss, by a country mile, but now you've broken the seal, retro sports classics! I so want one, but which one? Yammie? Triumph speed twin? kwaka 900 rs? you gotta do them all man. you're the only one I'd trust.
😆 WOW... that litter pick was impressive 👌👏👏 (that's not to do the review down in any way either... always on form, informative, a good piece of video, thank you) 🙏
Thanks for the information. That bike is a stunner. Despite the 2022’s refinement, I’m still keeping my 2019 model, with it’s agro throttle and attitude.
Only negative I can see, and it's minor, is those bar-ends. They look great but really mess up the lane splitting. I love the new version! I had the old one, it was "okay" but the new one has so much more presence, and it looks phenomenal! For ten grand, this is hard to beat. The motors on these are as close to perfect as a motor can get. Smooth power, great torque, and awesome sound. One other small negative I just remembered: The right side of the motor (think it's the clutch) sticks out really far you notice this if/when you put your right foot on the ground. Great daily rider.
@29:27 Why would you not also say that another reason to take this over the MT-09 would be corner stability and other handling/performance differences as a result of the longer wheelbase? The longer swingarm is a nice thing to have for certains kinds of riding. That's what would sell me on it, anyways. Great video as always.
Great video Zack…owned a FZ09 for over 6yrs and cannot denied that amazing engine my problem with Yamaha is the design specially for a retro stand point if they want to compete with speed twin and Z900rs. I sold my Fz09 and purchase The Z900rs Café and yes the XSR is more punchy and fun with all the tech but don’t come close to the feeling and the beauty of The Z900rs not even with the Speed twin. Hopefully you’ll be able to compare them on the daily rider…✌🏽✌🏽
My favorite you/tube , just a awesome way to review bikes , same route , same review at same area of route reviewing same topic of what makes a great daily rider , just surprising the 2022 xsr900 didn’t make it higher up the leaderboard??? Well I agree with the 2021 bmw 1250 as top dog , kudos
Digging the genuine Dzus fasteners on the sidepanels. That blue is magnificent. Imagine this bike in retro Yamaha racing livery... Ago red/white and Kenny Y yellow/black both with speedblocks. OMG. Seat is fixeable.
Finally! I wanted the MT-09 but basically the same thing. I’m a little surprised with where it landed on the daily rider board but maybe it’s the seat. I got a base model MT-09 and while it had to break in. The stock seat is surprisingly comfortable because there’s so much space to move around and adjust yourself. That’s also coming from a 300lb rider so not your typical rider you’d expect on a sportier motorcycle. The thing that makes the XSR more desirable to the MT (looks aside) is the cruise control. $500 more is all it takes? The SP has it also which makes me feel like you’re being punished for buying what is imo the more practical version of the 3
Yeah, the leader board position says a bit about the challenge with overall scores. I have had the MT07 and 09SP and apart from price and slow turn radius the latter is waay ahead in everything, even the giggle factor (which is great in both though). Still when it came down to the leaderboard comparisons with the neighbouring bikes I understand Zacks reasoning
Nice review for nice bike. I can tell you had some fun with this one! The Daily Rider board needs some more "sticker" categories. You've got the heart for classics, the $ for the expensive ones, fire for the "spicy" ones. You need to add the giggle for the fun ones, and the wheelie sticker, and the backing it in sticker.... and maybe an accountant sticker for the boring ones.
In regards to the tight turning radius, look at how close the switchgear is to the fuel tank, when in full lock at 28:20. My '22 XSR700 has a much better turning radius, and is supposed to have the same size tank. Hmm..
Excellent review!! Very informative outside of all the other reviews that cover all the general. You covered everyday use amd its more unique attributes. I have one ordered expected in the nexts couple weeks. Im very excited. Thank you
Hi Zack. Most of the comments cover my thinking as well. I’ve been waiting for your take on the XSR900 myself as a fellow 6ft 2 guy. Awesome control from the backseat. If I wasn’t poor I might buy this or an MT09, the turning radius thing might suck in Taiwan traffic however. I’ll have to wait to see when I have money and whether or not I can talk myself into a faired version of one is coming. I still think this is a good size to scare myself enough after 20+ years riding in 250 naked to 300cc maxi-scooter range.
I feel the xsr700 would probably be better for Taiwan streets- My 900 feels better than my old xsr700 on the California highways at 90mph…but even the 700 is probably overkill for most roads throughout the world. Just my .02 cent opinion 🤙🤙
@@macc1370 Thanks Mac. I’ve ridden the old MT07 a couple of times. It’s pretty good but maybe not scary enough. I have a300cc maxi scooter and have ridden that for the past 5 years, just worried the MT07 will be boring too fast and since I am skint paying for two high school kids I can not afford to buy then buy again given the double US price for motorcycles here. Plus none gives test rides which would be the best way to compare.

Seems that it could be more confortable for longer rides than it is but those looks and colour combo are, IMO, fantastic!
This is going to be my next bike! Whenever Yamaha get around to delivering it, that is.
This will be my next bike, I think it looks stunning in this color, I even like the seat.
8:44 “Sitting bones”… 🤣
Great video! Very informative.
Yes, they're called sit bones.

Then I learned something new! Thanks Mac.
After using cruise control - any bike without this stuff is no more in my list.
I'm so excited for this. This is my dream bike!
If I didn't buy a cb650r last year I would have definetly checked this one out as an amazing contenter.
Same
I love the giggle scale. Looking forward to see more bikes rated on the giggle scale.
I'm glad Zack also enjoys the Street Triple RS. Love my 22. The mt09 seems like a good comparison just isn't as raw.
I love my XSR900! Very happy with my purchase
Zack's feelin himself and I'm here for it.
That whole lovers lane section stressed me out to no end 😆
In regards to the tight turning radius, look at how close the switchgear is to the fuel tank, when in full lock at 28:20. My '22 XSR700 has a much better turning radius, and is supposed to have the same size tank. Hmm..
Haha - reviewing passenger accommodations from the passenger perch, while riding. This is why I love your reviews!
💯
The "sitting on the pillion with cruise control on" trick always FREAKS ME OUT :( Oh well, Zack's a pro, dammit - wooo! :)
Just got mine a few days ago Zack
So in love with it..awesome bike indeed ❤
Been waiting for you guys to review the XSR900! Wanted to hear your thoughts on it!
Heard it before i know, but thanks for making things a lot more real.
