    As someone who loves Tudor history, I remember watching this scene and getting soo frustrated! It makes no sense for any person in such a desperate position to be insulting the person whom they are asking for aid over and over again. I remember yelling at Mary to shut up as she was clearly tanking this entire meeting. The acting was excellent but the writing... oof.

    It’s the way they made Elizabeth age and look “ugly” but Mary is forever the young and beautiful woman. Mary by the time of her death, also wore wigs and had smallpox but only Elizabeth gets shamed (even tho Elizabeth recovered fairly quickly and had only small acne scars)
    As far as Elizabeth being jealous because of Mary’s beautiful well there is, unsurprisingly, little real evidence as to who was more beautiful - both were flattered by friends and slandered by enemies - but Mary’s sensationally ill-judged love life, contrasted with Elizabeth’s image as a repressed career woman, has ensured her survival as a romantic heroine and continues to enthral even contemporary male historians.
    A lot of romanticization of MQOS really comes from the Victorian era and it’s because Mary was seen as the “proper woman” who got married and had a child while Elizabeth didn’t and so she is seen as the horrible ugly woman. You can also see that trope in this movie as well when Mary gives birth.
    Anyways this was a great review!

      that was one of the points that angered me as well. This was supposed to be a feminist movie, but one woman was shamed misogynisticly , while the other was hailed.

    I'm at the beginning of the video so you'll probably cover this, but I HATED it when Mary said Elizabeth should bow to her queen. What??? No way would that have happened!! Elizabeth would have lost her mind if Mary had said that to her (if they had ever met in person anyway).

    I agree - sometimes the modern infusion just doesn’t work in a scene like this. I also enjoyed the movie! I do think that the writers portrayed Elizabeth as a little too uncertain and vulnerable though. That’s surprising about Mary using the coat of arms of the monarch of England. No wonder Elizabeth wasn’t a huge fan of Mary’s. History books and shows always put her dislike down to jealousy of Mary’s looks. Clearly, the coat of arms issue was also if not more of a factor. Great episode, Dr. Paranque!

    I've also heard the argument that was Elizabeth was worried she might be swayed by Mary's charm and charisma if they'd met in person.

    Its really a shame too because the scene had an almost ethereal, dreamlike quality. It just feels wasted on this monsense. Theres also no way that Elizabeth would have removed her wig in front of Mary! When Essex barged in on her without her hair and makeup and then she executed him, i think thats a pretty clear indication of how she would have responded. I kmow there was a lot more to Essexs execution than that, but it definitely sent her over the edge.

    I was bothered by their meeting and the conversation that took place in it. But, what I was MOST annoyed by (because it was in every scene and so inescapable) was Mary's 'brogue' - SERIOUSLY!?? She had been raised for most of her life in France. It should have been FRENCH! other films have done so.

    I'm so glad to have found your channel! I'm in the middle of reading "Blood, Fire, and Gold," which I immediately purchased after listening to your conversation with Suzannah Lipscomb on "Not Just the Tudors." Thank you for this video. I found this movie to be ... well, a lot of nonsense. The acting was superb, but the writing was incredulous. I do believe Mary was victimized by many people over the course of her life, but not so much by Elizabeth. Do you believe there was anything Mary could have said or done to sway Elizabeth more fully to her side?

    • @ElleHistory
      @ElleHistory  Год назад +2

      First of all, thank you so much for telling me this. I put my heart and soul in my books so it means a lot when someone reads them :)
      And that’s a very good question. I think I need to make a video on their rivalry and explain as best as I can their relationship as it is so complex. I think by 1568/9 there’s nothing that Mary could have really said. It was too late but I want to explain why…

    • @daughteroftime8047
      @daughteroftime8047 Год назад +2

      She could have apologized for using the arms of England and admitted that Elizabeth was the rightful queen. I still don't think that would have changed anything but Elizabeth would have at least liked her a bit more. Elizabeth didn't mind flattery that's for sure.

  • @helpinyerdasellavon

    I totally agree. The Script for this scene was awfully written and away from historical facts which is a shame. Both Queens had totally different upbringings but one was born to rule and that's Elizabeth while Mary was ruled by her heart. The problem with Mary is that she made mistakes putting herself in an awkward position considering the circumstances during her times. Great insightful review as always. Thank you, Dr Parenque 🙏

    I have to laugh a bit because I've not actually watched this movie yet. I have it in my digital movie collection and bought it when it was on sale. I've been meaning to but just haven't gotten to it yet. But this scene reminds me a bit of Braveheart and there was a major battle, can't remember the name, and it involved a bridge in real life. There was no bridge in this scene. It makes you watch historical movies with a critical eye.

      It does. I mean by all means watch it and tell me your thoughts. I just can’t wait for a movie on the two cousins that is more grounded on historical evidence. It’s dramatic, entertaining, and moving enough this way..

    I also think the dialogue is daft but the interplay visually was good. I think Elizabeth looks like the Red Queen in Alice in Wonderland but she does show her jealous and fear here.
    Mary had every right to deny Elizabeth as Queen. Elizabeth was deemed to be illegitimate in most of Europe and Mary was raised in France so she would have been taught that all her life.
    I prefer the meetings in the original film, based more on their letters.

    • @ElleHistory
      @ElleHistory  Год назад +5

      Funny enough the French royals kept telling her she had to recognise Elizabeth’s legitimacy so I think it was from her family, the Guises.
      Yes I agree with your comments about interplay.
      The dialogue though.. argh…

    • @banditqueenbanditqueen9110
      @banditqueenbanditqueen9110 Год назад

      @@ElleHistory Quite possibly. She went there as a child of 5 or 6 and her mother was Marie de Guise, so yes. They were very powerful and devious. A child has to be taught these things so I can understand how Mary developed this as a belief.
      Many of the early letters between Mary and Elizabeth, interestingly are very diplomatic and friendly. They use the language of Monarch to Monarch, calling each other sister. It all seems to go downhill after Elizabeth tried to tell Mary whom she could marry and sent Robert Dudley. Oops. ❤

    What I also found jarring in this movie (as an Elizabeth and Mary geek).. was the Scottish accent for Mary. Having been most of her life at the French court, don't you think a French accent would have rung more true?

    I don't understand why filmmakers find it necessary to show Mary Queen of Scots meeting Elizabeth.

  • @Pablo668
    @Pablo668 3 месяца назад +1

    I was a lot less charitable with this film, ergo, I never watched it. From the get go it was Mary speaking with a Scottish accent, possibly a West Scottish accent (Glasgow!) that turned me right off. It's petty I know, but I just can't look past it.
    I am a Stuart? Big deal! Like you said, it was her Tudor blood that gave her a claim. Even then, if the Greys had played things a lot better the Stuart/Tudor claim could have come to naught.
    Fun fact I'm sure you already know, both Tudors and Stuarts had common Beaufort ancestors.
    Elizabeth might just be the best monarch England ever had. Her hold on power was not overly strong. There were religious tensions, plots, a fragile diplomatic situation, through all of that she survived and prospered even. Very admirable.
    Mary's record not so. She made a lot of unrecoverable mistakes.

    This scene made Elizabeth look cowardly and intimidated, which we all know was not the case. To be called inferior by a queen without a throne or country, would have resulted in Henry and Anne’s daughter telling her off in a way she would have never ever thought possible.
