      If you really want something to make fun of, try Ever After. It's delightful but so wildly inaccurate. My favorite is that instead of the historical marriage the prince actually made TO CATHERINE de MEDICI, he instead married Drew Barrymore. Also the costume history is extremely inconsistent; different periods and countries of clothing are all thrown together, and near the end one of the step-sisters wears change-color velvet, which didn't exist until the 1980s.

      Unless this film is shown on Netflix (to which I subscribe), I am not seeing this film. From the information shared in this video, the history seems far more dramatic, violent, exciting and entertaining than the film, Mary Queen of Scots seems (full disclosure have only seen the trailer).to be. While an impossibility without a TARDIS, I would have loved to hear what the Tudors and (current) Windsors would say about one another.

      NGL I loved Reign for entertainment value, but for historical accuracy? Nah. I hate the Tudors (and things like it, like Versailles) because they're just so centred around sex scenes and I aint about that chief.
      At best, these kinds of 'historical dramas' get the figures' names right, and maybe some reference to some events, but they're notorious for being overwhelmingly inaccurate. So I'd suggest watching them with a grain of salt!

    Okay I am going to stop watching for a bit here, just to say that the chances of Henry actually having killed the Princes in the Tower are slim to none. Most historians nowadays agree that it was still Richard III (who, even if you take into account Tudor villification, was a pretty shitty person by most accounts too) because of the timeframe involved. By the time Henry even got to London, the princes had been missing for years and rumours of their deaths were circulated everywhere (motivating a lot of people to jump ship to Henry's cause). If they were in fact alive, Richard could have just shown them off to the masses once in a while to disprove the allegations (or just have them continue playing in the courtyard, so there'd be sightings?) before shuffling the boys away again into the Tower.
    Imo I think the whole "Henry killed the princes" theory is mostly backlash against the very Tudor-centric narrative post Bosworth. And while I get wanting to move away from the Lancaster/Tudor = good, York=evil, there just doesn't appear to be any solid evidence for it and a whole lot against it.
    Sorry, I'll move on with the video now. Even though I am not British, I am pretty obsessed with England during that time period, so I get vocal about it. No bad feelings against you intended. haha;;;

    • @floraposteschild4184
      @floraposteschild4184 5 лет назад +6

      Even with the best will in the world (and he hadn't) Richard mislaid not one but two princes. And he never made a serious effort to find them. That one fact goes far to indict him, but he also had means, motive and opportunity. But Richard's fans are living in a lala land of far-fetched theories. Because one person might be bad, it doesn't mean his rival is good.

    • @tealkerberus748
      @tealkerberus748 4 года назад

      Or Henry bribed someone to murder the princes, Richard knew when he found out that there was no way he wouldn't be blamed, and put off dealing with the problem until it was too late and the damage to his reputation was done. Richard didn't need the princes dead, Henry did.

    • @oliviamackenzie9725
      @oliviamackenzie9725 3 года назад

      On the other hand - everyone knew he was keeping the boys prisoner. If, like they did, they mysteriously dissidents, everyone would immediately blame Richard and that would NOT paint him in a good light.

    Oh God. Henry VII forcing Elizabeth of York into marriage and also forcing a pregnancy on her prior to said marriage is A MYTH. Jessica mentioned that she is a fan of Philippa Gregory, and having been a fan myself I kind of know where she might bave gotten that historical fact from -- Philippa, while a good writer, also heavily fictionalized certain things (which is fine, as a historical fiction writer) and really enjoyed villifying Margaret Beaufort and Henry VII for some indiscernible reason. Like for some reason Gregory REALLY loves making Margaret out into a dragonish mother-in-law, a religious fanatic, and controlling authority figure while conveniently leaving out how she was a paragon for education and quite the scholar, not to mention codifying the customs and cares for childbirth at court because she was impregnated AT THIRTEEN, resulting in a very troublesome, painful birth and possibly rendering her unable to have more children. She sure as hell wanted to make sure that didn't happen to another woman. Furthermore, the marriage was arranged by Margaret and Elizabeth Woodville (EoY's mum) themselves, and there's been PLENTY of debate over the timing of EoY's pregnancy, but it's never been confirmed or agreed that Henry VII forced her in order to confirm that she is fertile.
    By certain accounts Margaret Beaufort and Henry VII didn't try to make grand claims that they were the legitimate claimants to the throne, especially not with the main Yorkists and Lancasters duking it out, and they only really went for it because, after a while, it was the only way Henry could feasibly return to England -- go big or go into exile forever and maybe possibly be assassinated. Henry VII in turn didn't try to reference his Lancastrian heritage during his reign, knowing that people were aware (or would be aware) that he was of a distant line, and focused on stabilizing the kingdom instead of making big moves. He was famously devoted to his wife, never taking a mistress (believe me when I say this ia a big. ass. deal) and going into a deep depression after she died, and there are accounts showing Margaret Beaufort and Elizabeth of York being quite close.
    It's a trend I've noticed in certain circles of historical readers (scholars or otherwise), where they choose to put the more popular, well-known historical figures into villainous roles in favour of the others, as a "gotcha!" to people used to seeing them praised as heroes. Like trying to subvert Elizabeth I as the good virginal queen, but instead getting a LITTLE too carried away. (Don't get me started on Philippa Gregory seemingly having a kink with the idea that Elizabeth inherited her Anne Boleyn's supposed seductive, sexual behaviour as a young teen, and almost near fetishizing Elizabeth's stepdad molestation of her. THE GIRL WAS A YOUNG TEEN, A CHILD, and there are accounts of her being afraid to be near him, always wanting to be close to her governess, thereafter. But no, Gregory really enjoyed playing the idea that Elizabeth was secretly another Anne Boleyn at the age of thirteen. This is also the same author who wrote EoY as in love with Richard III, her not-even-distant uncle -- which isn't terrible as one could read it as a precocious crush, a young woman who didn't know better or thought it was normal, but it becomes terrible when she writes it as a tragic, forbidden love story, oh-so cruelly thwarted by Henry, that horrible horrible man.)
    Neither is right, and some historical revisionism is important sometimes, but dear God not like this.

    I found the film skewed to Mary fan fic (I guess the film makers know who'll be buying the tickets.) But people tend to forget that not only France but the most powerful empire in Europe, Spain, wanted to see Mary on the throne, and England taken back from the Protestants generally. The attack of the Spanish Armada in 1588 was in part brought on by Mary's execution in 1587; that and they thought a weak woman would be easy pickings.

    When they tore away her dress to reveal the red one underneath I did burst out laughing, I mean who knew that velcro was a thing in the 16th century!
    But seriously I would be interested to see a film or series on James the First as he was known for having favourite male courtiers and being 'inappropriately affectionate' towards them in front of everyone at court.

    Great and fun analysis of the history behind the film. When is first heard about the film, I was very excited to see it. Then I heard how loosely it used the history of these two women and was not impressed. There’s a good documentary on RUclips somewhere of two actors reading the letters of Mary and Elizabeth that’s really well done and made very real to me their relationship to one another.

    I LOVE your explanations of English history. I've always been fascinated with monarchies and the gossip is just so much more entertaining when you describe it! I haven't seen the movie yet, but I definitely plan to. Accurate or not, I can't pass up a fun period piece. The clothing alone looks like it will be worth a watch!

    Not a film, but you should do a historical review of the TV series (or book series upon which the TV show is based) Wolf Hall, based around the life of Thomas Cromwell.

I then went on to see if you had made any more on this topic, so I hoped over to your channel. Fantastic run through of the history. I haven't seen the movie and apparently missed my chance as it was removed from the streaming service I was going to watch it on... None of your videos should EVER be demonitised & @RUclips needs to figure out more about the real world. Also, since I'm watching this after New Years 2021, congratulations and I hope everything is going well!

    Great video! I always think it's funny that the film makers change so much. The real story clearly contains enough drama on its own and doesn't need to be "spiced" up! I think it would be awesome if you reviewed the show The Crown!

    This is so interesting! Since you talked about Catherine of Aragon, have you seen the series that just came out? I think it's called the Spanish Princess and talks about her early years with the English court. It seems really intense thought with all of Henry's wives x.x

    I had some kind of pox that I got after chicken pox and it had very little physical effects. I have some purple-y pock marks on my thighs, stomach and inside of my elbows (The squishy bits) but most are barely noticeable. While it was most likely a weak ancestor of cow pox, it's unlikely that Elizabeth's face would have been so heavily marked.
