Charles II: His family tree was a wreath.
haha that's a great description
Lol
Every part of this comment was perfect.
I had a friend whose girlfriend described her family tree as "more of a bush".
So accurate! 😂👍
"Lover of massive dresses-- probably not a lover of where her life was going." Relatable, honestly.
massive dresses are awesome
I've never related more to anything Jessica has said before. XD
Yes!!!! I would buy all of that merch.@Sarah Hamilfan
That was the best line in the video. I loved it💜
Sounds like the life of a drag pageant queen
The most Habsburg Habsburg to ever Habsburg.
true!
Dani Wood my favorite part
"Don't marry blood relations...For seven generations."
Fair advice, I'd say.
Actually its six
@@ryujinxyyeji that makes it even better advice.
Cirrect.
Correct, "Do Not Marry relatives to the 7th genetation."
Don't marry your cousin. Not even for the throne of Spain.
yeah seriously!
@@annaswanson5903 my culture doesn't mind marrying your cousin. But you uncle, now that's taboo as hell. I knew their blood tree was weird but I never knew it was that convoluted. I thought it was just cousin marriage and was perplexed for a while because it's not a problem in my country. Turns out it was much much worse.
@@hajarmdn4883 actually there have been lots of problems with cousin marriages especially when there have been multiple generations of cousin marriages the same thing happens as what happened to the king.
you lose genetic diversity within the gene pool and recessive genes are more likely to come up as cousins share a set of grandparents
@@hajarmdn4883 If you only marry 1st cousin to 1st cousin in many successive generations, though, you raise the likelihood that the gene pool will shrink and contain many duplicate recessive genes that otherwise would be phased out over time. The gene pool shrinks more quickly with niece-to-uncle or nephew-to-aunt marriage because of the statistical likelihood that the niece or nephew shares more genes with their parent's sibling, but simply turning to just 2nd cousins (or even 1st cousins one generation removed) the chance of compounding recessive genetic problems actually drops to that of any random woman and random man within a generation or so. The mathematics are involved, but rather straightforward, and you can work them out using dog or cat traits (spots vs no spots, normal tail vs bob tail) as examples with Punnett Squares. Genetic diversity is VERY IMPORTANT! :)
don’t marry your aunt... even to be the ruler of the seven kingdoms
When the family tree forms a circle, you know you messed things up.

DrGrukar McNinjaSixthGun ...Habsburg jaw..:
@@yama5182 If you and your sons inbreed with your cousins and nephews... Of course the most primitive recessive genes will manifest. Maybe your greatgrandkids would have ... joe. :).

double relatives marrying more double relatives ... so glad this is illegal where I live
@@annaswanson5903 where is it illegal and can you explain further what you mean by that?
@@minksrule2196 its illegal in a lot of the 1st world, as in you can't obtain a marriage license and any children you have are so likely to have genetic diseases most ppl abort them to protect the child from a miserable life or early death
@@Natalie-101 but I live in australia and it's legal here, if it is illegal elsewhere give me a specific example, don't just assume it is

The most Habsburg Hapsburg to ever Hapsburg. Greatest sentence ever.
so witty
Well I sure do love a history lesson from my favourite out of century gay gal❤️🌎👑💁♀️

I read this as gal pal at first
For a lot of the video I kept thinking, "how is she not bothered by that beautiful wave of hair flopping into the corner of her left eye? It would drive me nuts if I kept seeing it bob in and out of view no matter how pretty it looks." But then I remembered you're blind in that eye 😅
Please cover how Victoria’s descendants just basically took over Europe. Or perhaps how Napoleon eventually had family throughout European royalty.

And lycanthropy according to Doctor Who
@@emmapaley9352 Yes!
Charles IV was horrifically unfortunate. I mentioned him and Julius Cæsar, another ruler with epilepsy in a class I was teaching on living with epilepsy. But I must say... “The Habsburgiest Habsburg that ever Habsburged” made me spit coffee.
I feel the same way
That jawline was *sister* snatched - because it came from marrying brothers and *sisters*
haha that's an interesting way to convey the point, let's all make a pact not to marry relatives!
"The most habsberg, habsberg to ever habsberg" - I'm crying I'm laughing so hard
I've been reading this book called "When Women Ran the World." It's about 6 female pharaohs/regents. One of the biggest factors that end a dynasty is sterility through SEVERE inbreeding. It kinda makes me feel icky that humans have been turning to inbreeding for thousands of years.
it's actually not too common because most people have a natural instinct against it ... royals did it to preserve wealth and status
@@annaswanson5903 I thought people have a natural instinct towards it. I reckon people only have an instinct against it because it is seen as taboo in western culture. It is still very common in some parts of the world and it's pretty normal in my culture (cousins only though, not uncles and nieces etc).
@@annaswanson5903 It's actually proven that you are more likely to be sexually attracted to people that are DNA related when they have not been raised in the same family. F.i. children given up for adoption falling in love with their half siblings without their knowledge of the genetical connection or children from the same sperm donor falling in love.
@@naamahnotorious955 yes I've had experience with this. I once met someone who I was automatically attracted to like there was some sort of big connection between us and then I found out we were first cousins (and he was already married).
@@minksrule2196 That must have been an upsetting experience... (especially finding out he was married already), your poor heart! Hope you had better luck in love lateron xxx

His family were screwing each other.
I love these history videos, I feel like I wasn't wasting my time on RUclips for once 😜👌
she makes it a lot more fun and less dry than my textbooks
If you wish to continue the madness that is incest (and the corresponding genetics) you could make a video on King Tutankhamun
I once heard a quote that said Charles II was "a man murdered 200 years before he was born"
That's perfect!
Wow Jess it's amazing how you suddenly develop fluent Spanish like that ;)
And a perfect Valencian accent!
I'm here so fast damn, I love history and I'm gay, this video is a treat

“This is history what were you expecting, for a woman to get her way?”
I love when you talk about history! You can hear the excitement in your voice. Also, the sarcasm is top notch!

If I had you as a history teacher back in school, I may have retained some of that information. I could listen to you speak for hours! You are very engaging 😊
she would make a great history teacher!
To paraphrase Darth Vader: "The sarcasm is strong with this one...."
My brother has that on a shirt
"I mean, I'm not inbred but I feel your pain." Thank you...I needed that laugh!

A year later and “the most Habsburg Habsburg to ever Habsburg” still has me dead
his family tree is a ... CIRCLE ⭕️ 😂
Fun fact: this video totally saved me on my Giant European history test today in school! I never would’ve remembered the Habsburg model if I hadn’t watched this. So thanks Jessica for always having fun, cool, and educational videos, especially for a kid who loves history
Thank you for this highly disturbing history lesson. It's a nice distraction from my life. I found out yesterday that my state has denied me disability benefits for the final time and I now have no choice but to go back to work.
can you appeal?
Are you in America? Have you contacted a lawyer?
@@shalacarter6658 I am in America. And this was my final go at it with a disability specialist lawyer. ☹
Habsburg family tree is like the endless knot...
You should really host history shows
that would be very fun
You should do Christina the Queen of Sweden (a maybe Lesbian queen!) And as always this was a lovely video! :D
Yeah, she was lesbian. But they say that she was very intellectual.
She was intersex i think .
I love this topic. You should do other people from history who had disabilities.
yes plz
Gorgeous woman with a brilliant mind
yeas!
and a kind and generous soul.
It's stuff like this that makes people's shock with Game of Thrones so odd. Inbreeding was quite historic among royals. Adds to the realism. Especially with the latest relationship.
yes, they (Royals) are!
I was in hysterics Jessica, you make it so easy to understand and amusing, I think you should definitely do a history series for schools, you’d be brilliant at it! I follow your explanations and I’m 33!
that's a really good idea
I just started watching Versailles this week and I am obsessed!! I love a good historical drama!
I'll have to watch it
The one person that disliked this video should be ashamed of his/herself. Who could dislike all of this amazingness?
maybe they are on team- What's wrong with inbreeding? I married my cousin and it's fine
Anna the Amazon Hahaha. That would be the type.
I am not a history person but I love these videos you do! You would be a great history teacher. You make history interesting and entertaining! Thank you! ❤

Absolutely love your history videos, you're an amazing teacher! Loved the "The most Habsburg Habsburg to ever Habsburg" line x
haha I feel the same
That dress is so pretty! I love the ties on top and the color

Great video! Considering I watched a Dr. Phil episode yesterday about a pair of first cousins who legally married in one state and are fighting to make it legal across the country, this video is especially useful as to why that's such a bad idea. They complete discounted all of the potential health risks for their future offspring as being comparable to a woman over forty having a baby. Completely disregarding scientific facts. Also, I loved the Spanish-language voice overs from Clara.
in the US there are a few states where you can marry your first cousin and the rest of us find it bizarre ... but hey, not judging, just saying
Any episode of that jerk's show is a bad idea!
Shala Carter Totally agree, but when your grandma controls the TV, you don't question it.
As much as I love all of your content, the history episodes are definitely my favourites. You have such an elloquent and enthralling delivery of what would usually be harder to digest. Thank you for sharing your interests so enthusiaticly.
her voice control and delivery are top notch. She talks without error and in an almost "lilting" way. Magic.
I love your historical videos because you present them in a way that I rarely see! Very easy to follow and always witty, thanks! 💛

I love learning about history! This was a great video. On an unrelated note, I needed to take a screenshot of another tab, and seeing "Royal Inbreeding Gone Wrong!" in the screenshot makes me giggle
the title is awesome!
I'm just screaming at the Versailles mentions because it is absolutely my new favorite show and I want to cry every time I remember it got canceled
I'll have to see it again now because everyone is talking about it
Great history lesson, thank you! Always love your videos

Jessica I really enjoy these videos!!! Wonderful job as always!!☺️☺️☺️❤️

I never stop appreciating the captions.
I'm so happy you did a video on this family! I love looking into disabled historical figures as well since I'm a disabled person and a cultural anthropology major. Would you be interested in making a video about Vincent Van Gogh and his depression? I think a lot of people need to see the importance of mental illness and learn to separate this idea that depression fuels creativity, or that one must be sad to create art. I've heard many people say that his talent came from sorrow and I hate this idea that people with mental illness need to be mentally ill to be creative. Horrible stigma.
What an excellent idea and a great point!
You make this more interesting than my lecturer does...
You missed your calling...you could be a history teacher...you make it so facsinating!!
Indeed
I would be interested in hearing about events which precipitated changes in disability rights
Anne Lister please! I am obsessed with Gentleman Jack 😍

There were 3 uncle niece marriages in his family tree.
The odd thing about my home country is, it is perfectly legal to marry your cousin. I think I heard something along the lines of maybe the couple needs to have the approval of the family or something, but more distant relatives are a-okay to marry? Of course it still sounds weird to most people and they wouldn't consider their cousins that way, but the way I've heard some foreign people talking about family relations, that you can have exactly zero shared ancestry to be an acceptable partner, is a bit harsh to me. I mean, if I meet a person that I fall in love with, and it turns out we share a great-great-great-great-grandparent, I wouldn't really think it was something uncomfortable. If you're that distant relatives, you share basically no blood at all.
But yeah, I don't think my country is particularly incestuous, the cousin thing might be legal but it's still such a rare thing, it's just that we have been a very secluded country with a small population for a long period of history and have only in the last century started to open up, I guess? :D
Where are you from if you don't mind me asking? I'm quite curious
Marrying your 1st cousin is perfectly legal in the US & UK, & not even that rare in the US, tho it's more common with ie Amish, fundamental Mormons etc. In the UK it's mostly South Asian families. Rather than outlawing it, governments try to educate people, but loads of kids are born with severe disabilities- a doctor in Pennsylvania specialises in treating a few diseases only found in Amish communities. So your country isn't unusual at all, imo!
This is my day off from school but YES HISTORY LESSONS YES PLEASEEE

This was great.
You're great.
I wish I had discovered your work much earlier in my life.

she makes it so funny, when it actually is not
This was absolutely fascinating.

I love this so much!! It was exactly what I thought when studying about this in school. My teacher came with a giant family tree and we were all so confused, don't really know why they ever thought it was a good idea to marry your niece.

I love this video I think of it often, actually. Here's why: I loved the phrase "the most Habsburg Habsburg to ever Habsburg." But also, in small bits there is a slight vibe of disability hierarchy and/or disparaging certain conditions. I found it jarring in this video, because I know you are aware of/have mentioned the hierarchy of disabilities in other videos, so I'm certain you never intended this vibe to be here. But that might be something to watch out for in how you frame things.
As always, I love your videos and they bring me calmness, joy, and geeky goodness. I'm so glad you're here. :)
I always "loved" that Queen Elizabeth was the descendant of Queen Victoria through a George>Edward>George>Edward>(Victoria)
And her husband, Prince Philip, was the descendant of Queen Victoria through an Alice>Victoria>Alice>(Victoria)
all the Royals are related, maybe that's why they have finally allowed their heirs to marry people who are not Royals

We don't really learn this stuff in school in Ireland (our history classes focus on other areas). So, when I was inter-railing around Europe, I was a bit flummoxed at first by the prevalence of the Habsburg family in museums across the continent. Also, by the love for King Wencelas. 😅
