Hi Jessica, I work as a guide at Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, the Habsburg family's summer residence and also the place where Maria Theresias family including Maria Christina and later on, Isabella of Parma with her husband Joseph lived. I really, really, truly appreciate your video and because, as you say, history™ very much paints Isabella and Mimi just as close friends (GAL PALS!) I often tell their love story in my tours to change the narrative around them a bit. Thank you so much for this piece of gay Austrian history that is so often overlooked, also from me personally as a bisexual Austrian woman/historian :D Also, nice work trying to pronounce all of Maria Theresia's titles and the German place names! My mom grew up in Spain in a Catholic family, and she and all her sisters' first names are Maria, and then they all have different middle names that they go by.
My father's family was catholic, and his mother's generation were *all* named Mary. my nana was the eldest, so she was the only one of the ~10 sisters that actually _went by_ Mary, while the rest went by their middle names (which doubled as their confirmation names, and often they took them on legally after marriage - Mary Theresa Cabin might become Theresa Cabin LaRose, for example). Confusingly, my nana and her (1-2 years younger) sister actually had the _exact same name_ - they were both Mary Alice, but my nana went by Mary + her sister went by Alice 😹
That’s funny, in the catholic part of canada it was still common in the 90s to do the opposite. Give regular names to girls but then give them all the middle name Mary which never gets used. Same with boys and Joseph.
Mimi's life may have mirrored that of every lesbian movie that came after, but it is lovely that she did get a "happily ever after" at the end with a man whom she loved and who sounds like a class act. Preserving and publishing Isabella's love letters to his wife, clearly (to me) because he understood how cherished that relationship had been, is such a beautiful act of devotion by Prince Albert. Of course we all wish Isabella herself had a happier fate, but I personally have no doubt that she'd be glad that her love ended up with someone who valued and respected her so.
As an Austrian bisexual lass who has studied the Habsburgs, especially the very likely gay Empress Elisabeth of Austria, for over two decades I just wanted to say that you did GREAT here. I've got a possible lesbian historical figure: Saint Ætheldreda. Or commonly known as St Audrey. Apparently she begged some priest dude to ask her 2nd husband to not make sexual advances on her and to respect her wishes to remain a virtuous nun. Sounds good and all, doesn't sound at all gay.... She fled to the island that her 1st husband (who had passed at that point) with 2 other nuns. One or both of those nuns were bound to be her lover(s). Just saying. As one of my 2nd cousins (back a gen), had said (I'm paraphrasing) "you think all nuns aren't in relationships and having sex with each other, as well as invite men in"
I've been told by numerous friends, including those of the lgbt variety that I was obviously not bisexual anymore since I picked a *gasp* MAN to spend the rest of my life with.... Weirdly mainly other women told me that.
My sister in law is bi but chose to spend her life with a man. That does not however prevent her from grabbing my butt when she can get away with it. It's not a hidden fact among us she finds me attractive and I dont get offended when she does manage to sneak in a butt grab.
It’s simple probability. Many bisexuals will find a compatible life-partner in a person of the opposite sex. There are going to be more male’s interested in women to chose a life partner from, than females interested in females to choose from. (And even fewer trans, or non-binary people who are interested in people of your gender and biological configuration).
@@lynn858 I know, I was commenting this because it irks me that people are still like that "You ended up in a het relationship so you're obviously not bi anymore" still the same today as it was a long time ago, see the historians argue that this princess couldn't have been anything but straight, she was happily married to a man...

As a bisexual woman myself, historiacal figures like Mimi and Isabella are very important for me. You can say many things about the internet, but it allows us to learn about things, that was/is considered a taboo in the schooling system.
Watched this last night, just wanted to come back and comment THANK YOU because even seeing the word bisexual in a title is so huge for me and seeing my orientation represented. You and Anna Akana just happened to post bisexual related content at the same time which made my little bi heart so happy. 😍
I absolutely love these lessons!!! 💜💜💜 May I suggest an historical figure who I recently discovered: Charles-Geneviève-Louis-Auguste-André-Timothée d'Éon de Beaumont, best known as Chevalier d'Èon (I had to copypaste from Wikipedia😅), a French diplomat, spy, adventurer and freemason who lived half of life as a man and the other half as a woman between 18th and 19th century. Albert was so sweet and supportive about the whole relationship too, he is one of the only historical male figures I actually like! How I wish they made a movie or a documentary about these three...

@@jasminehagerman6329 being bi however does not mean flirting with everyone or being unfaithful to your partner, as I'm sure you know
@@lynn858 I know, I was commenting this because it irks me that people are still like that "You ended up in a het relationship so you're obviously not bi anymore" still the same today as it was a long time ago, see the historians argue that this princess couldn't have been anything but straight, she was happily married to a man...
@@DaemlichesStueck her hubby is fine with it as he knows I'm straight and 100% faithful to his brother. Plus he knows that there there will be retaliation if I about go through the ceiling if she scares the crap out of me, he finds it hilarious to hear the yelp and then see her running with me hot on her heels to get her back
Me, casually browsing RUclips:
Me, seeing that Jessica uploaded a new historical profile video: yyeEAAH HERE WE GO
How could I resist a title like that
Let's just take a moment to appreciate how Jessica's hair is always on point.
Thank you for this video. While I was in school, we studied Maria Teresia and Joseph's life in great detail, but Isabella was mention only once "she was his first wife, the end" and we learned NOTHING anout Mimi. As a bisexual woman myself, historiacal figures like Mimi and Isabella are very important for me. You can say many things about the internet, but it allows us to learn about things, that was/is considered a taboo in the schooling system.
Bisexuality and princesses, everything I love! 💕
god the ending of their story is more emotionally impactful than the ending of Titanic 😔😔😔
Watched this last night, just wanted to come back and comment THANK YOU because even seeing the word bisexual in a title is so huge for me and seeing my orientation represented. You and Anna Akana just happened to post bisexual related content at the same time which made my little bi heart so happy. 😍
Immediately after reading the title I thought it would make a great children's book story, but a miniseries would be cool too!
i mean, it seems too dark and depressing for children to read, and too serious to bowdlerise. but a miniseries would be cool
I´m loving these videos of non-straight historical characters, great job Jessica.
So fascinating!
O.O so many apostrophes...
I WANT THE HISTORICAL DRAMA OF THEIR STORY SO BADLY!
Oh I'd absolutely LOVE to see a miniseries about Isabella and Mimi!!
I ordered the pin, because I can’t wear my “Because Gay” shirt every day.
I want this pin so bad but I didn’t see it on her store :(
@@horrorfanatic6990 Look in the description of this video, near the top is “Because Gay and other enamel pins” with a link!
@@horrorfanatic6990 Took me a minute to figure out, because I’m not all that text savvy, but this is the link to where to buy the pins:
store.dftba.com/collections/jessica-out-of-the-closet
Thank you! I was going on her tee spring website! That explains why I couldn’t find the pin ☺️
@@horrorfanatic6990 i’m glad you found it!
I havent had time to watch this, but my heart gets so happy every time I read “bisexual princesses” in my subscription box 🥺💕
The hair in the portrait at 15:10 is on point. Also I love growing up in an era where people are calling out historians for not noticing or being willfully ignorant of the obvious.
The first thought I had when reading the title was "I wanna see that Disney movie"
10:38 Oh, my goodness! That reminds me of how the legend of Orpheus and Eurydice was used to symbolise the forbidden love shared between the two female protagonists in the French film 'Portrait of a Lady On Fire.'
16:22 She's been watching a lot of ContraPoints.
Haven’t we all?
And if someone hasn’t, they should.
@@katherinemorelle7115 I mean... I may have had a bit of a ContraPoints binge watch this past week. Just a few more left to rewatch...
I LOVE Jessica's videos and all, but I wish she'd provide some references for these obviously well researched videos not only so we can do our own reading but also to give credit to her sources.
Oh yes that would be amazing!! 💜
I was so excited to get this video today!!! I love your voice. I’m able to read less and less because of my macular degeneration. History is my favorite, and listening to you tell history is better then listening to Sir Attenborough.
Hiiii thank you for covering my favourite princess story of all times!!! Also for the same names in the family, those were only repeated because the first daughters of such names like Marie Carolina died as infants. Albert and Mimi also fell in love only after Isabela passed away, even though they already knew each other by that point! Albert was so sweet and supportive about the whole relationship too, he is one of the only historical male figures I actually like! How I wish they made a movie or a documentary about these three...
OH YEES my favorite lesbian talking about my favorite lesbians, thats pure happiness
I’m straight but I absolutely love these recent videos you are posting. I think it’s so good to go over history and definitely talk about the parts of history we all looked at a little side-eyed when they tried to mask it to fit the “norms” of those times. I think these would actually make fantastic podcast episodes
the fact that i'm LITERALLY FROM PARMA and never knew anything about their relationship is driving me mad.
I don’t know where else to say this but my history prof in uni is currently teaching us Sappho and saying she was completely straight with no female attraction and I’m so mad bc I chose to do my final on her thinking I could finally do a paper on being bi and now I have to write pretending she was straight. Thank you for coming to my ted talk
...how?? she’s literally the ur-example of a lesbian!
she lived
on an island
called lesbos
for which lesbianism is named
because of her
and her *very* *gay* poems
...your prof is whack, man, is all i can say
So many Marias. Im also a Maria Alexandra❣️I love the historical knowledge you share. So much I didn't kno thank u💓❣️💓
I know we always say that about all these historical profiles, but out of all the historical profiles, I want to see this one turned into a movie the most.
Bad fatigue and feeling stressed about the world not being accessible today, so really appreciating this video 😍 needed to hear about disabled and queer people being real and historical 😍
Historians think it’s easier to say friend not lover, thank you for this video and I’m learning every video you share from you. Love these videos so much and enjoy your videos a lot.
The irresistible urge to complete that one lyric of I Feel Pretty...beautiful
I clicked so fast. where my bi people at?
Bi enby here.
Yo!
Here
Hello!
Bonjour
Your German pronounciation was really good! Teschen is spot on.
I read about them and there was a lot of "there were really good friends, guys" Its soo good to hear you talk about those two
4:12 Lodomeria and Galicia are basically one thing, it was a part of Poland that got rebranded to "Lodomeria and Galicia" when Austria took it
kind of interesting the finger to the chin gesture- maybe letting on that she gets the d2bw or just a random gesture? Either way good to know about d2bw
Honestly these history and movie videos are my favorite ones of yours now. I could listen to you explain history to me all day long.
15:37 “Favoritism hurt your favorite child too, parents.”
FUCKING THANK YOU. It’s a bad business for everyone when that happens.
This is literally my favourite branch of history, I've spent ages learning about Marie Antoinette herself and had no idea this was a thing too omg
the video title sounds like an interesting punk band lol looking good my dudette , love the hair, looks like something from the 40s, very cool
Your voice is so soothing, I love your videos
As a bisexual, that was So romantic. Would love this as a movie! Off to read the letters now.
Jessica you did a great job pronouncing the German and Hungarian names.
This is a beautiful love story. Thank you for sharing.
Yesss I waited the whole video for the “gal pals!” joke! It’s spreading!
I want that mini-series too, Jessica!
Stop tempting me with your club, I cannot afford it 😞
Anyways, I love your channel and everything you create, especially content about your marriage - it gives me hope I could have a wife too, one day ❤️
Loved this! I would also love to see a historical t.v. series based on these princesses.
I love it when Lesbian Mom tells stories!!!
Have you read "sex with kings" ? Its another good history book on women of the crowns and the turmoil they faced.
Hold up, a princess being betrothed to a prince and falling in love with his sister??
Guys this is LITERALLY Of Fire and Stars. Like, there's already a book about this.
just think, the book mightve been inspired by this :)
I would 100% support a mini series about this. Honestly, BBC needs to get on this.
Make it. Make that mini series!
Really really really love your history videos. You are quickly becoming one of my favorite RUclipsrs. Im a cis white male so hopefully your ok with me really enjoying your content.
I just wanted to say that I love your channel. You’re so pretty and positive, in spite of your circumstances. And I am sorry if that is a clichéd thing to say, but with you it’s so true! I love listening to your viewpoints and your history lessons, and I was especially interested in your upbringing as a Quaker because I thought of becoming one at some point years ago (but ended up becoming Catholic)
Writing this historical fiction novel seems like a great future project for you, Jessica!
