Visiting the USS Midway Museum in San Diego

We wrap up our series on San Diego with a visit to the USS Midway Museum. This decommissioned aircraft carrier is permanently docked in San Diego and offers interesting exhibits about WWII era planes, navy helicopters and aircraft carriers. Touring this extensive floating museum immerses you into what life was like for the crew of the USS Midway. You'll see the galley where their food was prepared, where officers dined, the post office, the barber shop, a briefing room, the flight deck and much more. These elaborately decorated areas of the ship provide a glimpse of what it was like to live at sea.

After watching the Doc, I just left San Diego and visited the Midway and made it so much more worth it.

Fascinating video! I've never seen an aircraft carrier in person, but they are massive and super impressive. I loved the food hall and shop. I really wish they didn't have such a problem with homelessness. So sad to see and hear about. I'm glad you enjoyed your trip though. Definitely had a lot of epic videos.
This was such a cool experience for Jack. He loved exploring the aircraft carrier. There was a lot to take in. San Diego is beautiful. But California needs to figure out how to resolve their homeless issue. Lots of people living in terrible situations there. Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment!

We've done tours of a battleship and submarines, but we haven't toured an aircraft carrier yet. I always find these tours fascinating.

Colin grew up in southern CA, but neither of us has been to San Diego before (we're in WI now). So good to know the negatives along with the positives of traveling there. Can't believe those gas prices. I'd be moving out! But, this museum was awesome. Loved seeing what the daily life might have been like for the workers aboard.
Yeah, I am not sure how people afford to live there. The cost of living is so high in California compared to many other places. Though it is going up everywhere these days. The USS Midway Museum is great. Jack loved exploring this ship all afternoon. We definitely highly recommend this place if you ever find yourself in San Diego. I love touring ships like this. I would love to tour the Midway. My dad use to take me down to San Diego to tour these ships. But I think the Midway wasn't there then.
Yeah we noticed there were a number of ships you could tour in San Diego. Jack picked this one to go to and is glad he did. He really enjoyed it and was fascinated by things he learned along the way. We used less than half the footage he recorded so there is still a lot to see there. We definitely recommend it if you find yourself back in San Diego. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!

We loved the Midway too. There was a ceremony going on the deck the day we went. I completely missed the patches somehow. I also enjoyed the gift shop. And I have to agree California was very expensive too. Thank you for sharing 😊

This museum is the kind of place Steve would love (and I would like!) (Actually, my Dad would love this too... I feel a family reunion coming on in San Diego!) Some of those insignias (is that spelled right??) looked like Disney! Wow. The tour looks amazing, so much to see and learn. The food requirements alone are mind-blowing. Nor sure I could handle the ride simulator! Fabulous museum.

VERY cool! We toured the USS Wisconsin in Norfolk last summer and it was really neat. Obviously, it was super small compared to an aircraft carrier. It was neat to see the similarities and differences. It was a bit cheaper to tour the battleship, too. I would anticipate the homelessness to just get worse, too. So sad! I hope that some new solutions can help. Thanks for a great tour!
We toured the USS Wisconsin in Norfolk back in December. They decorated it in Christmas lights and Christmas decorations as a fundraiser for the Nauticus museum next door. It was a very cool ship too. Unfortunately, you may be right about the homelessness getting worse. The same local elected officials doing the same things year after year is unlikely to bring about change. Hopefully they start considering other possibilities. Seeing the inside of an aircraft carrier would be awesome. Great show guys and it sure appears there is no shortage of things to do in San Diego. The homeless problem is big in our town of Seattle as well. We need to invest heavily in treatment facilities and mental health hospitals, but the leaders of our cities refuse to acknowledge the problems for what they are and that's primarily addiction issues which may require forced treatment, similar to what they are doing in Rhode Island. It was an awesome experience for Jack to be able to explore an aircraft carrier. He was fascinated by the whole experience. We agree about the need to invest in treatment facilities and hospitals. There are few limited situations in life when people need to get help whether they want it or not - and drug addiction and mental health issues are two examples of that. Their lives would be so much better if they were able to overcome these challenges and society should be helping them towards these goals not protecting their right to “camp.” Thanks for watching and leaving such a thoughtful comment!

Sweet, we just love touring Navy ships. We have not been on a carrier yet. We been on several battleships and submarines. So interesting seeing the difference of the crew area between the ships.
We had been on one battleship before this one. Jack actually thought he wouldn't enjoy this tour much because he thought it would be the same thing all over again except for a hangar deck on top with some planes. But there were plenty of differences and still a lot of fascinating information to learn so he had a great afternoon touring the ship. Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment!

Indeed. We look forward to going back to San Diego. I need to tour the whole ship in person since all I have seen is the video Jack took. So a return is in the plans so we can finish the tour Jack didn't have time to finish. But we also got a lot of other cities we want to check out too. So many places, so little time. I was there back in 2011, really a great museum. Certainly worth the 16 dollar admission fee.
It does not look like a comfy sleeping situation. I would think we’d want people fighting for us to get some good rest though. Can’t sleep? Here’s Total Recall starring Arnold and Sharon!
This really was a great museum. And the price is good. The price of food, gas and hotels in the area are not good. But the attractions in the area seem to be reasonably priced. Thanks so much for watching and commenting, Wade!

I'm sure the movie was informative but I bet it wasn't narrated by Henry Fonda! I'm glad you pointed out this Midway wasn't commissioned until 1945. I think much confusion exists about what carriers took part at the battle of Midway. It must have been an interesting life that took place on these and current carriers or any ship or worse yet a submarine. One I wouldn't care to live but it's interesting to see. I prefer Norwegian Cruise Lines! But we enjoyed the tour and the whole San Diego series. Thanks so much for bringing us along.
Cruise ships definitely have much better amenities than this aircraft carrier. But it is fascinating to consider the experience that people had living and working on this ship. I love that they take decommissioned ships and make them into museums like this. It is a great piece of history that should be remembered. Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment!
That is so cool. We toured the Lexington in Corpus Christi. They are so interesting. Thanks for sharing this one. They have so many similarities but enough differences that it would make it worth going to both.
Yes - we have been to tour another Navy ship (USS Wisconsin in Norfolk). And they certainly have things in common. But there were enough differences to that it was still fascinating to see both. Jack was actually considered as he went that he would be a little bored because we had seen another Navy ship and it would all be the same. But there were differences - and they way they were exhibited were different too. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!

I really enjoyed the visiting the Midway myself. You need hours to fully explore the ship. California is very expensive place to live. Within the last two weeks be paid $7 a gallon for gas.

Yeah, I don’t know how y’all make it with the cost of living in CA. The monthly rent for apartments there is twice what we pay for the mortgage on our house in the Carolinas. I will say California is so gorgeous and there is a lot to see and do there. But we are always stunned by what gas and hotels and restaurants cost. If you ever do go to San Diego, the Midway Museum is a must do. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!

Hi Alice & Jack! Great experience in San Diego. There is so much to do in the area. You're right the cost of enjoying California is way too high. I hear San Francisco is not the safest place to visit.

We love these kinds of places, we've been to the USS Alabama and USS Missouri and this looks so much like those! Sorry you missed it Alice! Loved seeing inside the engine, and the flight simulator rides looked fun! Yeah I've heard CA is more expensive on gas which makes absolutely everything else go up because everything is delivered by trucks, boats and planes. Sad to hear about the homelessness. Yeah, I wish I could have seen it all in person with Jack. We both have jobs that occasionally send us out of town for conferences or conventions. Since we can both work remote, we usually both go and the person who doesn't have to spend hours at a convention center gets to see more of the town than whoever is working all day. This time it was my turn to work half the trip. But we would love to tour USS Alabama and USS Missouri. We have toured the USS Wisconsin before and it was fascinating as well! The homelessness does make sense when you look at the prices of everything in California. It is sad to see though. We are familiar with some good ministries in southern California who are trying to turn it around but the problem seems so huge there. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!

I love that they open up these old aircraft carriers and battleships for tours. It is fascinating to see what life and work was like for the crews on these ships. The good news is that it isn’t very expensive to visit this museum. But if you want to eat, buy gas or stay in a hotel while in California, it will cost you.
