I served aboard the USS Oriskany with VA-155 during the last 3 years of the Vietnam War and hung out with 2 crazy guys from VA-93 aboard the Midway. We were all Stationed at NAS LeMoore CA. But sometimes between line periods off shore of Vietnam our 2 ships were doing R&R at Subic Bay at the same time and we would hook up and head into Olongapo. San MaGoo and lots of Booty.
I was 17 years old traveling from France alone and I visited many times Nas Miramar in 1989 / 1990 and 1996 San Diego is a Fantastic city ! Also visited North Island and the USS Ranger.
As a Navy vet - and having served on the Kitty Hawk - I still enjoyed visiting the Midway. It’s well-worth the time for a family visiting SD to give them a glimpse of what life was like for a “Blue Water” sailor.
Got to tour the Kitty Hawk; our guide was a "fireman", who was on watch the night they hit the soviet sub; he also told us about "newbs" that were told about the "bowling alley" on board.
I served on FDR (CVA-42) in the mid 1960s . When I first saw Midway I nearly broke into tears. While still on the pier, I walked past the refueling station 7 and all the memories and hours I spent there came flooding back. Being in engineering I was a bit disappointed in the present status of Main Engines Control where I stood watches. But the rest of the sister ship was very delightful and appreciated.
Thanks for the tips. I hope to visit her sometime in near future. I was the Electronic Warfare Officer on her from 1962 to 1964. Your tour brought back memories. Lt Commander USN (Ret)
I was station on the U.S.S. Oldendorf in Yokosuka, Japan with the Midway Battlegroup. The Midway sat across from us when in port and we were her shadow.
You and perhaps I as well MAY have served at the same time. I was privileged to have served on the USS Midway while on duty-my first time aboard her in Yokosuka, Japan. I worked primarily in the ship's laundry department-I saw it freatured on the video. How About That! I was a ship's service man during our deployment in what is known as Westpac. I always, always enjoyed serving our country and always will ! There is certainly more to my being in the Navy to tell you! So thank you for your service in our USNavy !! Thank you. C/O RDRT.
Plankowner CVN-73 here, I went a a board Midway yesterday and really enjoyed it other than ducking my head nearly everywhere due to those dinosaur ships being so small and the smell of JP-5 giving me a headache for the last couple of hours. $18 with veteran discount + $10 for parking on the pier.
In 2004, the year the USS Midway Museum opened, I had the great pleasure of serving as a docent. For your visit, I recommend that you arrive close to opening time (9:30 am) and proceed directly to the Bridge Tour. This is the best way to avoid the long line that forms there during the day, and the Bridge is the most popular place to see.
I've been to this music museum quite a few times. Just to let everybody know the best place to park is at the Museum it just a one-time cost and you don't have to feed a meter around the street there or next to the the restaurant next to the Midway itself.
I served aboard the USS Oriskany CVA 34 from 71 to 74. I remember one night off the coast of Vietnam 1972. Midway had terrible Flight Deck accident we came to her rescue.
This museum ship is absolutely awesome. She barely gives you a tiny taste but it is well worth the time and money. Plan on spending the day. The fantail has been turned into a nice little hamburger shop and there is a great "ship's store" at the aft end of the hanger. The docents were outstanding too. The Midway is separate, and yet a part of, the maritime museum stretched along the waterfront there. Great place to enjoy a day or two. Oh, check out Anthony's grotto; best seafood in San Diego.
Nice to visit but getting too crowded and they have too many events now and parking is difficult so get there early. Still, worth it if you have never seen it.
I'm sad to say this but Midway's last years were a (questionable) failure. She was built to support and operate aircraft of the 1940's and '50's. She was modified to operate aircraft of the 60's, 70's, 80's, & '90's and did well. She was modified again (1990's) to operate F/A-18 which was a limited success. Additional weight at the 03 level required additional bouyancy at/below the waterline. It all sorta worked but left her rolly in moderate to heavy weather. She is a legendary ship and I am proud to have sailed in her in several oceans including the Pacific, Indian and (I'm not sure of this) Southern. We were close but I'm not sure we made it that far south.
I think there is ongoing planning to use her as a museum ship. Wow CVA-63 was oil fired and CVN-65 Nuclear. There's a massive change in technology in almost sister ships.
@@Joe-gu6oe It would be great if the plan goes ahead ( I suspect it might), I remember reading she is in excellent condition, she will probably be released after more Ford Class carriers are completed & finished trials.
Sorry, Midway was originally to be a battleship but WW2 ended before she was finished. Converted to a carrier she was commissioned in n 1948. I served on her 62-64.
Seeing the video makes me want to explore several of Bianca's top attractions.
She definitely has attractions on top.

I want to see the emergency flotation devices, and I'm not talking about the ship. . .
I served onboard Midway and damn.... Bianca is hot as hell!

I just want to go home and wander around. I don't need a guide or a docent. I can find my blindfolded.

Hope you are right
