Just got back from a trip to San Diego. Took the tour, What a fantastic experience. Especially the retired guides who served on the Midway. So much history. We ran out of time, so they simply stamp your ticket & let you go the next day at no extra charge. A must see for anyone visiting SD.
My husband, proud United States Marine, served in intelligence on the Midway in the 60s in the P.I. He showed me the desk where he worked. Buried by the Marines here in San Diego in the Kaplan section of the cemetary with other Marines going back to the 1800s.
I served about the USS Midway from 1988 to 1991, including Desert Shield and Desert Strom. I have been back to visit the grand lady several times over the years and am pleased that she is still thriving in her post-Navy afterlife. Thank you for this expose on this amazing piece of Naval history.
In 1989 the midway entered port in my home town of Perth in the port of Fremantle. The ship was open for tours and we managed to take one and walk around the ship. As an 11 year old it was the first time I'd gotten to see F-18's and other planes up close. The experience has stuck with me over the years.
I live in San Diego has been a staple of the city forever and when I was a kid and saw it for the 1st time it blew me away I’m thankful I live such a diverse city with so much history and good weather
I was able to tour the USS Midway while in San Diego on a business trip. Loved the tour. As an Army vet, it was great to see how sailors lived on a carrier.
You should definitely check it out if you ever get the chance! I've been on it twice, once with my family and once for a field trip in school. It's awesome.
I rode this ship to the Philippines in 1991 as a Marine to evacuate our Air Assets due to the volcano, Mt Pinatubo! She was a steam driven ship and when they went flank speed it down shifted like a damn cars..it was an amazing time and it had a lean..Awesome!
Yay! I have missed your informative videos. This one did not disappoint. Love how you incorporate some humor into each one. Another great one! Keep up the good work!! 👏🏻
I remember visiting the USS Midway museum when my family visited San Diego for my uncle's Marine Corps graduation. It was one of my favorite parts of the visit.
I served aboard the Midway in 1980 with VMFP-3, a Marine photo recon squadron flying RF-4B's. I've been back to the ship a few times since it opened as a museum. Thanks for this video!!
I served with Marine Air Squadron VMFP-3 during that time period, 1980-81, working as Radar recon tech on RF-4B reconnaissance aircrafts. Thanks for remembering. Semper Fi.
Huge respect to you and ur service I live in San Diego and the ship is a huge staple to the city u can walk on the side of the coast with restaurants and then u see the midway with all its history it’s so huge it always surprised me how humans were able to make such a ship thank you for everything you have done 🫡 🇺🇸
I was looking for my son father use to be in this ship way back 1989 my son and his father has pictures together and that's the last day we seen him after USS Midway left Philippines 1991
USS MIDWAY CV 41 was my first ship 83-85 ⚓️ it was an epic time in my life. At the time the midway was out of Yokosuka Japan 🇯🇵. I left the midway & was assigned to the USS Carl Vinson CVN 70 (HS4)

Push a bunch of expensive helicopters overboard to make room for one Cessna to land on the flight deck? Why not send them up in the air for a half hour, clear the Cessna to land, then bring the choppers back in?
Many of the choppers were of questionable flyability, having come in from the Vietnamese army and air force: (1) sending them up for a half-hour or so might have killed or injured sailors and refugee civilians crowding the ship; (2) the ship had to be ready to undertake its own flight operations and needed a clear deck, just in case; and (3), taking the time to refuel each chopper and then get them to lift off to make room for the Cessna would have resulted in the Cessna running out of fuel and crashing into the sea. Thus there were no room for excess Vietnamese helicopters: they had done their job, so pushing some of them into the drink -- quickly -- was the correct decision. BTW: Only those helos actually in the way of the landing area were pushed overboard. Some remained on board and out of the way after the Cessna landed (you can see two of them as the Cessna comes in for a perfect landing).
So it launched with Hellcats, Corsairs and maybe Bearcats, and by the time it saw combat it had F4 Phantoms.... That's a big difference in plane size and power. It makes those Skyscrapers look like cottages by the lake.
Heyyyyyy I use to been there there was manacins and one robot I was in a tour and I said this image the manacins came to life and would kill us that ship was amazing
"The longest-serving aircraft carrier of the 20th century"(sic) Incorrect. Lexington - 7 February 1943 - 8 November 1991 48 years 264 days Midway - 10 September 1945 - 11 April 1992 46 years, 214 days
Went there today. Was in the infirmary part of the ship when I saw a door that said do not enter. About 3 do not enter areas later, im 2 floors down from where I started and had a huge metal door shut behind me from a mysterious draft that came about all of a sudden. That was the last time i went exploring by myself. Really wish I had the opportunity to go see what was behind all of the do not enter areas though. cool ship nonetheless
I served as Signalman on several Destroyers during the Vietnam War. We escorted and did planeguard for the Midway many times. I always enjoyed operating with Midway She was a very Professional Ship.
Sorry, the Lexington CV16 was longer serving carrier. Midway was decommissioned from 1966-70. The kids working there wanting people to get their pictures taken. After being a Midway member for many years, I canceled my membership, because of the idiot kids. I've been on all 5 carrier museums. Midway is by far, the least exciting ship. Many people would rather have the Hornet here
My husband was on from 79~82 and 89~91, he was one of decommissioning crews. Bring back some memories.
Nicely done great video. I served on midway from 83 to 85. An amazing ship.
I was 82-85 . I still miss her.
@@TPaine1776what’s the longest you went without seeing the sun?
great video, cannot wait to see her again next time I am in SD!
Lived in San Diego from 1982 to 2006 and never saw the Midway! Guess I'll have to take a trip back to see it! Great video.
Definitely worth checking out! Thanks for watching!

It's possibly my favourite museum in the world
It's marvelous for the History.
My Dad was on this ship during Vietnam.

Glad I grew up there.
I remember visiting the USS Midway museum when my family visited San Diego for my uncle's Marine Corps graduation. It was one of my favorite parts of the visit.
The USS midway is my favourite aircraft carrier because of its big size and design
I served aboard the Midway in 1980 with VMFP-3, a Marine photo recon squadron flying RF-4B's. I've been back to the ship a few times since it opened as a museum. Thanks for this video!!
I was there in 2010, really cool place, he must be improved over the years.
Was there back at October when visiting Cali. Great ship. Love some the vintage things there.
AWESOME! Hope to visit a US aircraft carrier museum.
I was on her for 4 years. Built the brig. Don't forget the almost year long tour because of the Iranian Hostage crisis.
I served with Marine Air Squadron VMFP-3 during that time period, 1980-81, working as Radar recon tech on RF-4B reconnaissance aircrafts. Thanks for remembering. Semper Fi.

My Father was on it's sister ship the Franklin D Roosevelt # 42.
Wonderful video. I learned a lot. I wanted to confirm that its ok to fly our drones to video the Midway? Thank you so much again.
Did 3 tours on the Midway and cross decked to the Indy after Desert Storm. The old girl always kept me safe

Cool!
Happy holidays!
Fun video!
I had no idea this only opened in 2004. When I use to drive around that area after 2004 I wondered why that area is always jammed packed with people
Just slept on the uss midway

Went to a reunion on it 2019. Was in VA-115 81-83 and VA-185 1987-89. VA-185 had a reunion on it too.
Midway, Minneapolis st Paul has a midway
Coincidence? Seems like a practicality there

Nah the US Government is very rich you're not aware of it❤😂🎉❤😂🎉
AIRBOSS little.
The Birddog was very low on fuel, with family on board....
... by CVA-41 CAMERAMAN AT THAT TIME🫡
She was home for me and my other Vigilantes from 1986- 1990.
Dram to see her again one day.
Wait, why do you need to get rid of helicopter though?
To make space as the helicopter is blocking the plane way of landing
How did she avoid Korea?

Okay, im confused. When you mentioned the first African American commanding officer, you showed a picture of what clearly looked like a white guy
I believe he may be half African American? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawrence_Chambers

Lexington spent a lot of time as just a training carrier out of Pensacola FLA
