      Same here. Went to Filson to buy the rust buffalo like he’s wearing in this video, but they had the green in stock in my size, and well, I went with it and love it. That said, I kind of want his, too, but I definitely don’t have the finances for both.

    The polyester sleeve is nice as it won't snag your clothing if wearing multiple wool layers unlike the cruisers.
    The cotton lining, I'm a bit torn on it. The risk from a survival aspect makes sense, but it's something I have never experienced even from all my years wearing a cotton-lined waxed jacket in winter.
    That said, it feels like a low-activity jacket to begin with. Something you shouldn't be working up much of a sweat in. Something you do a lot of sitting and standing around with. Not like the mackinaw cruisers.
    That said, I really enjoy wearing mine. Certainly not one for the faint of heart. It's heavy, bulky and stands out.

    Have the charcoal black/rope stripe. Amazing coat, but if they'd used the Alaskan guide flannel in the sleeve lining, I'd have sent it back. I hate fighting to get my arms into a coat because they didn't have the forethought not to use a high-friction fabric for sleeve lining. Look at any expensive overcoat or suit jacket. Filson made the right decision here, as usual.

    Great looking coat. I almost purchased that version myself. I was weirded out by the cotton, flannel lining. Plus the Coat is EXPENSIVE! I might have preferred a Removable, quilted nylon lining. { I don't like nylon much but it dries fast, and if it was removable,... then I guess it would be fine. } I don't know how You manage to afford all of Your Filson Gear, but: CONGRATULATIONS! Good for You. I would love a Filson collection like Yours.

    For anyone ordering online. I wear medium in every other coat. 39R for blazers. Schott medium or 40R. I need an XS in Filson packer and most filson wool coats. A small in the Cover cloth woodland jacket.

  • @RR-bk2sr
    @RR-bk2sr 2 года назад +1

    True, that's why I don't wear my lined jac shirts when doing physical activities in the winter. The cotton lining gets wet from the sweat, and gets cold after so I find the wool a little useless in that situation.

  • @hiddenname9109
    @hiddenname9109 2 года назад +4

    Funny I was about to ask your height and weight before getting to the end. Thanks for vid. Cotton lining for me is an unfortunate deal breaker as I can't stand the idea of getting wet and impacting the insulating ability. Maybe they know something I don't and if that's the case I am happy to hear of how it wouldn't be a problem somehow. Guessing you prefer the medium to layer thick stuff under it. I wear a small with the double mac myself and am 175 5'11".

    Do you know if it'll keep you warm at -30 to -40? I can't find a review anywhere mentioning how it rates at temps that low.

    • @wildforwool3821
      @wildforwool3821  Год назад

      I just got another question similar to this on the double mackinaw. it’s currently minus 39 celsius right now as I’m replying. I was outside a couple hours ago taking some square straw bales to the animals and pitching hay to the horses, I was wearing the mackinaw wool anorak with a long sleeve wool base layer, a cotton button up shirt and sheepskin vest underneath I was very warm almost to warm I was starting to sweat. The double mackinaw or packer coat would be warmer than what I was wearing so I probably would have left the sheepskins vest out but still kept the base layer and button up. But.. there is no wind tonight. With a cold wind I’m sure I would have been colder because the wool isn’t the best protection against wind. Also if I was standing around not doing anything for the amount of time I was outside I would have gotten pretty cold even if I would have had the double mackinaw or packer on. So the temperature rating all depends on what you are going to be doing outside. And than you will need to layer accordingly to that activity. I could be standing around doing nothing at -15 and get cold but be doing chores being active at -40 and be warm. For weather like this if you want to know you will be warm my sheepskin is the warmest coat I have and protects against wind.

    They are lining it with cotton now because Filson is catering to clientele that don't actually DO anything in their clothing. Okay, almost nothing, but like you said, in a survival situation - no good. That would have been sacrilege back in the day as an "Outfitter" company. Great fkn video!

    I'm sorry, dude, but you're dead wrong about the cotton here. Cotton sucks as a thermal insulator when it forms the "loft" component of the garment. This is the reason waxed canvas is still used for parkas and why polished cotton is used for wool coats. Even if the cotton gets wet, the wool surrounding it will keep you warm. Also, a note about blended melton/mackinaw fabrics:
    1. When synthetic fibers are incorporated, it's usually in the form of a monofilament core around which the wool is spun. This means thst the wool still acts like wool.
    2. Melton is actually originally spun around a cotton yarn. Bear in mind, melton is what is used in navy PEA COATS.
    3. The reason blended jackets are less warm is because they use less wool. The synthetic fibers aren't screwing anything up, it's just that instead of getting 24 ounces of wool per square yard, you're now getting 20. Just size up your fabric weight.
    Love the coat, you have excellent taste.

    • @rustyshackleford17
      @rustyshackleford17 2 года назад

      I think you're misunderstanding what he is saying. The wool in the jacket is 100% wool. Not mixture.
      However, the lining of the jacket is his concern. The liner in the torso is 100% cotton. The sleeves are 100% polyester.
      Having 100% cotton next to skin can be a problem when it is wetted out in cold weather.

    • @varun009
      @varun009 2 года назад +1

      @@rustyshackleford17 you're misunderstanding what I'm saying. Put on a cotton sweater, soak yourself then put on a wool coat, you'll be warm in 5 minutes. I mentioned blends because that's usually what you get these days. So for people who 2ant something comparable for a lower price, they can.
