    I bought the dbl Mack 30 years ago in the forest green, shot a buck in northern NY one day, wet snowing coming down that day, 3 hr drag back to my truck, when I removed my Filson dbl Mack I was bone dry underneath. The coat still looks new.

    My filsons slot pockets always host a pocket knife, flashlight (aa/aaa) and lighter (ferro rod). Those items are just short enough to not show or be easy to get out, so I added oiled leather strips, with a knot on the end (slit on one end to just hook into the pocket clips). with the solid green wools, the touch of reddish orange leather looks nice.

    Good review. I see the single Mack as a field shirt and the double Mack as a coat.
    The sizes run big to allow layering but also so very important is the layers are not compressed from tight fit that would other wise compromise warmth.

    • @RB-xv4si

      Man, you have some pretty loose standards as to what qualifies as a shirt.

    • @tbrew8222
      @tbrew8222 2 года назад

      I do too. I wear the single most of the year and consider it an extra thick flannel. If its real bad and I wont be active, I put a double over it; or a leather shirt (very large) or a rain shell. they seem pretty water resistant, but some lanolin will really take it to another magnitude, but will increase the wool smell when wet.

    I have had my green double mack for nearly 20 years and have worn it every condition possible. The only negative is that is a very heavy coat and the weather has to be pretty bad/cold to wear it. Otherwise it will get to hot. Looking back I feel like the single Mack would server most people very well and be more than enough coat.

      What temperature do you feel the single mackinaw is rated for? I live in Alberta Canada, -20 to -30 during the winter.

    • @JH-lc8xd
      @JH-lc8xd 11 месяцев назад

      @@timreid5103 With proper layering you should be able to wear a single Mac in those temps. It also depends on how well you personally can tolerate colder temps. One thing to keep in mind that wool breathes (meaning it does allow some wind to get thru but helps keep you from sweating). For temps lower than that , I cant speak for because once it hits -30 I just dont go outside anymore.

    Thanks for posting this which was most useful. I have had my single in charcoal for three years and love the quality and materials but not the design. It is simply more of a shacket than a coat and you really need to wear something warm underneath like a thick knit jumper in cold windy weather. I just wish they had put a larger overlap at the front and put a jacket rather than a shirt sleeve design after the cuffs - why use a great wind resistant wool to keep the heat in if you let it all out through gaps? Also - can you fasten your top button avoiding strangulation?

    Wore the single mack in -5°f in 40mph wind w/ snow this year. Plenty toasty with it an a modest sweater underneath. Cannot imagine how much of a heat stroke the double would have given me. I wish I bought the mackinaw cruiser years ago.

      Im in Alberta too, it’s currently minus 39 right now as I’m replying. I was outside a couple hours ago taking some square straw bales to the animals and pitching hay to the horses, I was wearing the mackinaw wool anorak with a long sleeve wool base layer, a cotton button up shirt and sheepskin vest underneath I was very warm almost to warm I was starting to sweat. The double mackinaw would be warmer than what I was wearing so I probably would have left the sheepskins vest out but still kept the base layer and button up. But.. there is no wind tonight. With a cold wind I’m sure I would have been colder because the wool isn’t the best protection against wind. Also if I was standing around not doing anything for the amount of time I was outside I would have gotten pretty cold even if I would have had the double mackinaw on. So it just all depends on what you are going to be doing outside. For weather like this if you want to know you will be warm my sheepskin is the warmest coat I have and protects against wind. Hope that helps

    I have the Mackinaw Vest in Charcoal. Love it! So, the big question is which one do you like best if you could only keep one... the Anorak, Cruiser, or Double Cruiser? I want to buy one of them, but I'm really torn here, I love the Anorak, think the Cruiser would be perfect for Archery hunting, but really love the Double Cruiser!

    • @wildforwool3821
      @wildforwool3821  3 года назад +4

      It all depends on the climate you live in and what you plan to use it for. That being said. If I could only choose one I personally would go with the cruiser because you could use it in a wider range of temperature by layering for the temp. The double would get to hot in many situations. Also the amount of pockets on the coats are very useful where as the anorak is more so just an over sized sweater. The single Mac is also durable enough for the bush but classy enough for the city.

Its now more like one lifetime or a few decades of daily wear, rather than pass it to the next generation quality. Still not many things that compare. Pendleton cruisers are nice too, but the handwarmer pockets on the filson are very very nice to have. So are the slot pockets if you carry a pocket knife flashlight lighter or whatever small trinkets might otherwise just clutter pockets.

    You ever sell any of your filson gear? I own a few of there jackets (double mackinaw, older down cruiser, down cruiser vest) a few sweaters and shirts, I absolutely love there products. I don't know how you can afford it all! But I do envy you haha 😄. Do you happen to know any sources to get used filson or similar gear?

      At this point I don’t sell any of it I love it all way to much. Eventually id like to give away a filson product on my Channel tho. I know there’s lots of filson on eBay but make sure you look very close at the pictures and write up on it to make sure your getting one with no flaws or minimal wear. Also you could follow @filsonhunter on Instagram he sells filson all the time. There’s also two Facebook groups one is called “filson gear-buy sell review” and the other is “cc filson trading post” you should check out to.

He said it had been in storage for 20 years or so, I got it for a pretty good price (300) considering it's around $650 canadian before taxes.

      Glad you liked it! Thank you for the comment. I was under the assumption game pockets are either lined or have a removable liner to wash. Personally I’d never put game in the filson map pocket. My understanding is the map pocket on this coat was designed for the old loggers back in the day when they still used maps or charts.

      @@wildforwool3821 You are correct. The wool cruiser jackets are named for the timber cruisers who often wear this style while out evaluating a timber stand. The pocket is called a map pocket because that is often what they held. Of course the smallest pockets over the breast pocket are for pens and items like thermometers. These days I use the map pocket to carry a tablet. Stay warm!

    I have the single mackinaw and I’ll be honest, carhartt is better than that thing. If it’s windy at all you’re going to be miserable I don’t care how many layers you have. I’m curious to know how much better the double is, anyone have an opinion?

    • @wildforwool3821
      @wildforwool3821  Год назад

      It’s currently minus 39 celsius right now as I’m replying. The double mackinaw or packer coat would be warmer than what I was wearing so I probably would have left the sheepskin vest out but still kept the base layer and button up. But.. there is no wind tonight. With a cold wind I’m sure I would have been colder because the wool isn’t the best protection against wind. Also if I was standing around not doing anything for the amount of time I was outside I would have gotten pretty cold even if I would have had the double mackinaw or packer on. So the temperature rating all depends on what you are going to be doing outside and the amount of wind. And than you will need to layer accordingly to that activity and adding a wind barrier if needed like leather or waxed cotton canvas. I could be standing around doing nothing at -15 and get cold but be doing chores being active at -40 and be warm. For weather like this if you want to know you will be warm my sheepskin is the warmest coat I have and protects against wind.

      Well the coat arrived! The coat is very well made and nice. The weight is noticeable but good. At 5’9 220-230 the fit is very tailored, buttoning the coat was not an issue, but no room for layering. The sleeves are fine. But I think it will be the large for me. If you like it, just consider that it will last for generations. Also, you can always sell it at any time and get about 75% of what you paid back. Can't do that with most other coats. Personally, I found the wool to be too abrasive for me. I prefer a lined coat.

      Why would you watch this video if you are clueless about benefits of fabrics over other fabrics. Gotta love people who shop at H&M thinking they are fabric experts...
