  • On Day 4 I took the group to see the ruins at Pompeii! This thriving ancient city, sitting at the base of Mt. Vesuvius, was buried in up to 20 feet of volcanic ash in 79 AD - perfectly preserving life at that moment. We got an incredible, comprehensive tour of the ruins - seeing the incredible destruction this still active volcano can cause.
We then travelled around the base of the mountain to Bosco de Medici, a zero kilometer vineyard that uses the incredibly nutrient dense volcanic soil to grow their grapes. The concept of terroir is in full view here - the volcanic soil, the salty sea air, the elevation of the volcano - all contribute to the flavor of the wine; and the food! This allowed us to see the life this volcano brings to the region, and why, knowing what they know, people still live there.

We arrived at Pompeii at sunset in our rental car, who knew they close. Good thing because we barely had time to drive further on to get to the ferry in Naples that took us overnight to Palermo, Sicely. We were lost, but the locals were friendly enough to guide us in the right direction. I am not joking when I tell you, we were the last to board the ship, they closed the gates behind us! Such an amazing memorable trip. Thank you for this beautiful video, reminding me of our trip!

You should make your own Limoncello back in Jersey when you get back. Verona? If I'm not mistaken. I seem to remember you mentioned that on Ch. 5 in the AM filling in for Mike or Inez several years ago. I don't remember which. That's when I started to follow you. I don't watch them now. Great post. Love the family style dining/tasting. But that's typical in many restaurants in Italy. Keep up the good work.

@@CaraDiFalco Thank you for the recipe. I will start making it tomorrow. Don't have organic lemons. Have regular ones, but won't chance it. Good thing I bought a case of quart size Mason Jars.❤❤
