I was fortunate to go tp Pompeii in 1974 as a 12 year old boy from California. My Grandfather was from Naples and returned with his family some 60 years after immigrating. The day we explored Pompeii was a rainy October day and we had the entire site to ourselves. Could you imagine letting your 12 year old run free wherever he wanted as long as he returned for lunch. Great memories
i went last november and it was similar to your experience, very few people but it was a glorious sunny day. such an amazing experience when theres not many people
Go visit Pompeii! My wife and I were there in October of 2022. It was truly amazing. As Americans, we had no idea how cool this was going to be. You can read about this place in history books, and see videos like this one, but the scale of the place is immense and makes a much bigger impact in person.
I am one of a few artists trained in Fresco. When I visited Pompeii it was shocking how well preserved the frescos are! In some places you can still see the sheen from the beeswax that was rubbed and buffed into the plaster.. very beautiful! I plastered and painted a fresco on the exterior of the bay window of my house. When I sold my house the new owner painted over it! Ihopein a thousand years someone uncovers it!
When I heard the word "fresco" I always imagined that the painting was very coarse, with more sand in it to hold it together. These Pompeii wall paintings are so finely detailed and beautiful! Just Amazing!❤
That is not really true, there was art like this in medieval times. "Renaisance" was a term coined by Georgio Vasari, essentially, it was a creation of art historians of the time who began systematically studying past works. But art, including Roman style works, never went out of fashion, the difference was the historical study of them
@@Tugela60 Again, show me an example of realism and perspective from the 600s to 1300s after Rome and before Renaissance. The terminology is irrelevant. The Romans had complex realist art, it was revived in the 15th century but it did not exist during the dark ages. All art is art, but your original statement was "there was art like this in medieval times" meaning realistic perspective art. OK, Where are the examples?
@@Metal0sopher Look up "Dutch primitives". Art did not disappear in the middle ages, the dark ages were not dark. I studied Pompeii as a child and thought nothing remained but ash and ruin. This tour through the House of Vettii was eye-opening, jaw-dropping and beautifully done.
We visited Pompeii in 1974. We toured the House of the Vettii and marveled at the vibrant colors on the walls, the garden, and the layout of the house. Your video brought back many memories!
Glad to hear. Yes, we remember the site in the early 90s. So vibrant, but now the level of attention and conservation is at another level. So glad to see it return to the public!
I remember at the age of 12 I read the story of Pompeii.... I wanted to see this so badly. I lived long enough (58) that I actually made it! Woke up early in Rome and took an excursion on a 3 hour bus trip to Naples and spent the day in this amazing ancient city.... one more thing off my bucket list :)
You're lucky. I went there with someone (who lived in Roma) who wasn't that interested in it and was only able to spend a couple hours there! He drove and I didn't want to be annoying. I would have loved to have explored everything and was sad to not be with someone, while exploring the ruins, who wasn't as amazed with the place as I was.
I visited Pompeii in 1972 with my friend Bonnie as students resident in Rome. There were no hordes of tourista. We wandered through the city alone and unguided, marveling. We turned a corner and before our eyes the city with its inhabitants was alive again, with a market, commerce, horses. It was like we'd stepped back 2000 years. A most glorious shock. We dared not approach and stood there with our mouths open. Then we noticed some subtly placed klieg lights; a film was in process. I shall never forget that trip back over 2000 years, no matter how we got there. BTW. for good reason, more of the city remains buried and undisturbed than has been excavated. Who knows what wonders may be unearthed in the future.
Yes, it is wonderful time to visit Pompeii. There is always a street to explore without the crowds. (Obviously, you can choose a less busy time to visit as well, say February)- but each visit is special and unique!
My wife and I visited Pompeii last year with our son while he lived in Naples. Absolutely awesome place to see. Many times larger than we could have imagined. Looks like we will have to go again to see this!
I saw the House of the Vettii in 1996 but haven't been to Pompeii since. So excited about the restoration there and new excavations reported from the area. Must have another look before too long. Thanks for the report - and the guide to the illustrations.
In October 2019, I saw Pompeii and Herculaneum for the first time in person and as an Art History Major many years before, I was blown away by what I saw. Pictures do not do it justice. I will never forget my experience there.
This is absolutely stunning. I loved Pompeii when I visited over 20 years ago. You can spend days looking through the ruins. Amazing to have survived the Volcanic eruption and to be able to see these Fresco’s.
Pompeii is the most interesting thing for me. I wonder often what it must have been like to live in those days, the smells, the people, their humor, their business dealings, their music etc. I would love to visit some day. Thank you for the presentation
wow. we often imagine rome as being a place of shining white marble, but its amazing to see all the vibrant colors that have faded away over the centuries.
So beautiful. I watch Rome and Domina over and over because I’ll always see something new in their set designs which are superb. You can see how much inspiration they’ve taken from Pompeii in many places.
The house is mesmerizing. I would get lost in the wall paintings, knowing without Vesuvius erupting there is no way we could understand so completely what a Roman house looked like.
And to think that we have all this beautifully preserved artifacts because of a horrific disaster where so many died....terrible...yet wonderful....nice place to visit...as long as its not 79ad
You could just strap a camera on yourself and walk around , I would watch you all day ❤️❤️ Thank you for allowing us to see this magnificent home. The restoration is amazing, much love ❤❤
Would like to see a 3D version, looking as it would have looked in its best form. I've seen some like that, they're stunning. (Don't remember where I saw them tho. Sorry.)
Provided the camera was pointing away from you. No offence, but seeing a guy always in front of stuff I would rather see unblocked gets old rather quickly.
This house was open four years ago when I was there, but only parts and the garden was still off limits and shrouded behind tarps. This was a very impressive home.
The Romans not only great in civilization but also nourishment, you will surely find roman bath to the remote area. Thank you for sharing the stunning ancient Roman civilization..really incredible
Vetti's house ❤ I got the chance to see it in 2003 before it was closed 😊 I was nearly 15 and it was my first trip outside France 😂 frescas are vibrants even today 😊
Absolutely amazing. Compare to what will be left of "modern" buildings. We pale in comparison. Our immediate fall will leave little of consequence behind. Thank you so much for sharing this. Will continue to follow you 😊
Pompeii is absolutely stunning! Seeing it with Vesuvius in the background really brings the history to life. It's one thing to know it but another to see it.
My husband daughter and I climbed Vesuvius with other tourists and the Bay of Naples was a picturesque blue water view. It was hot and we brought water for the climb. A wonderful vacay .

I am particularly impressed by the perspective images in the frescoes. It would take around 1,500 years before the perspective was rediscovered by the artists!
It’s beautiful and amazing, thanks so much for showing us! It’s a shame that some of those fresco panels were hacked out in previous times. They probably wanted to ensure their safety by putting them in the museum, but they should be secure enough if the house gates are carefully locked every night and the site is secured. Pompeii is on my bucket list.
So true. I was shocked how much material is there. It’s amazing how they built all that as private homes not huge cathedrals
We visited in 1997 and was blown away and now over 25years later there is so much more to see
Especially when I remember what I have seen in The Last Day of Pompeii - in the '70s... ❤❤❤

There are a lot of houses and more to see in great shape.
Saw this at the beginning of February, barely 2 weeks after it reopened and it was amazing. They did a good job restoring it

It is clear that the Roman artists were well aware of the laws of perspective.
Absolutely
Saving money to go there, hopefully will make it to go there 🙏

It's interesting to see the use made of perspective in the wall paintings when this has been attributed to Renaissance artists.
Pasiphaë's story seems wicked enough with that scene, but researching into it reveals even more insane twists. Greek mythology is fascinating.
