    I was fortunate to go tp Pompeii in 1974 as a 12 year old boy from California. My Grandfather was from Naples and returned with his family some 60 years after immigrating. The day we explored Pompeii was a rainy October day and we had the entire site to ourselves. Could you imagine letting your 12 year old run free wherever he wanted as long as he returned for lunch. Great memories

    Go visit Pompeii! My wife and I were there in October of 2022. It was truly amazing. As Americans, we had no idea how cool this was going to be. I am one of a few artists trained in Fresco. When I visited Pompeii it was shocking how well preserved the frescos are! In some places you can still see the sheen from the beeswax that was rubbed and buffed into the plaster.. very beautiful! I plastered and painted a fresco on the exterior of the bay window of my house. When I sold my house the new owner painted over it! Ihopein a thousand years someone uncovers it!

      That is not really true, there was art like this in medieval times. "Renaisance" was a term coined by Georgio Vasari, essentially, it was a creation of art historians of the time who began systematically studying past works. But art, including Roman style works, never went out of fashion, the difference was the historical study of them

      @@Tugela60 Again, show me an example of realism and perspective from the 600s to 1300s after Rome and before Renaissance. The terminology is irrelevant. The Romans had complex realist art, it was revived in the 15th century but it did not exist during the dark ages. All art is art, but your original statement was "there was art like this in medieval times" meaning realistic perspective art. OK, Where are the examples?

    • @Tugela60
      @Tugela60 Год назад +9

      @@Metal0sopher Look up "Dutch primitives". Art did not disappear in the middle ages, the dark ages were not dark. Styles changed, much of it reflected religion until the renaisance, when neo classical directions became more prevalent.
      The renaisance did not rediscover ancient techniques, they rediscovered ancient subject matter.

      You're lucky. I went there with someone (who lived in Roma) who wasn't that interested in it and was only able to spend a couple hours there! He drove and I didn't want to be annoying. I would have loved to have explored everything and was sad to not be with someone, while exploring the ruins, who wasn't as amazed with the place as I was.

    I visited Pompeii in 1972 with my friend Bonnie as students resident in Rome. There were no hordes of tourista. We wandered through the city alone and unguided, marveling. We turned a corner and before our eyes the city with its inhabitants was alive again, with a market, commerce, horses. It was like we'd stepped back 2000 years. A most glorious shock. We dared not approach and stood there with our mouths open.
    Then we noticed some subtly placed klieg lights; a film was in process. I shall never forget that trip back over 2000 years, no matter how we got there.
    BTW. for good reason, more of the city remains buried and undisturbed than has been excavated. Who knows what wonders may be unearthed in the future.

    This is a remarkable building, with such beautiful frescoes. Darius, i would love to see a video on what was done by the conservators and architects to preserve and prepare this house for future visitors. Thanks for your videos.

    The relative wealth of these individuals must have been great. I love the layout of the Roman houses with airflow, light and the peristyle garden. We could take a lesson from them in house building.

    Imagine this is a *close to average house.* Imagine bigger and more luxurious villas... That gives you an idea of how glorious Rome really was.

    The depth conveyed in that artwork is amazing. I cant even imagine how great that must have looked in brightly glinting condition, being lit by some warm collection of oil lamps. Also, I'm lookin at those walls and wonderin how much of the visible damage is the result of plundering, and how much more complete and impressive they may have have looked.

    It is clear that the Roman artists were well aware of the laws of perspective.

    It's interesting to see the use made of perspective in the wall paintings when this has been attributed to Renaissance artists.

    Pasiphaë's story seems wicked enough with that scene, but researching into it reveals even more insane twists. Greek mythology is fascinating.
