My day driving the Amalfi coast was the best experience I've ever had in Europe. Our lunch looking over the sea was spectacular and worth the price. Two tips. Don't rent a manual if you are not comfortable driving such a car. Secondly drive East to West. We drove from Naples and began in Salerno going to Sorrento before returning to our cruise ship. You hug the wall not the sea. Unforgetable.

My don’t for the Amalfi coast is have to go to the hospital. I had a very severe allergic reaction while there and it was difficult getting to the nearest hospital due to the small winding coastal road and heavy traffic. Don’t stay in any of the small touristy towns like Positano or Amalfi, unless you’re on a honeymoon and willing to feel ripped off. Otherwise stay in Naples, Sorrento, or Salerno, and just bus or boat in for the day. They’re much more affordable, there are actual Italians that live there, unlike the small touristy towns on the Amalfi Coast. You’ll pay easily 15€ for a pizza in Positano when it’ll be 3€ in Naples and much better.

I just spent four days in Amalfi and it was stunningly beautiful. We had an Air B&B located on a cliff with mountains behind us and the ocean in front of us. I rode a Vespa from Amalfi to Salerno and back and to Positano. The driving is crazy, so be patient.

I drove north along the inside, not the outside, of the Amalfi Coast highway in a 9 person manual transmission passenger van with a group of UW Rome Studies students and professor in June 1986! Everyone was so grateful because the professor was a terrible driver and I was really good at 21! It took nine hours to drive from Salerno to Ravello! I remember we were caught on a hairpin turn to the right by a large tour bus and I wrote my name on the side of the bus we were so close! In one small town a group of locals physically picked up a tiny car parked too far out in the street and put it on the sidewalk to help clear the traffic jam! When we arrived at our beautiful hotel at the north end of Ravello and at the top of the hill, I was shaking and exhausted. When the host's son heard how well I'd done, he offered to let me drive his Ferrari or Lamborgini around the parking lot but I couldn't get the clutch right after the passenger van. That evening, I had champagne and wine with dinner for the first time and when we left in the morning I was driving. The only problem is that I think the alcohol was still in my system and I had to stop driving within 20 minutes for safety! The professor insisted on driving the rest of the trip back to Rome. For some reason, the professor didn't even offer to have me drive on a northern trip to Tuscany and we all suffered his horrible shifting and steering. What a memory! In my last trip to the Amalfi Coast in 2017 with my daughter, we stayed in Naples and took the ferries back and forth for two days. It was much easier and cheaper!
When we spend our holidays in Italy on the coast we only eat fresh fish with lemon and salad. The fish tastes so delicious there. And then don`t forget the delicious homemade ice cream for dessert.
I went on a day trip to Naples and Pompeii along the coast (with a tour). One tip is if you are visiting Pompeii in summer, wear a hat, and bring a water bottle. Even though I had done these things, I still came close to passing out from the heat and the sun.
I did the walk in Sentiero degli dei, it's a must, but you can skip sleeping in Positano or Ravello if you have a budget (view and sunset were outstanding tbh, but it was +300 EUR/night). The small beach is meh. Food, taxis are expensive. You hear a lot of english. If you're on a Airbnb it's hard to do shopping. If I should do again, I would stay in a budget hôtel in Agerola to start in early morning the walk Sentiero degli dei (path of gods) towards Positano. I had a diner expérience in a farm with local farmer, a couple of two female us students and two germans, it was the best night of my trip.
Hard to expect there to be big beaches with such a coastline, is it? 😁But in Maiori you can find a relatively large one. Even with something resembling sand. I grew up in Atrani and have always avoided the beach in Maiori. 😂 However, congratulations: the idea of the hotel in Agerola is genius. Hello Mark, Another great videos. Paestum is kind of a distance from Napoli but we’ll worth the time and money investment. Also this little gem is not on everyone’s itinerary so you might get a break from the summer herds. Greek ruins in Italy, what a concept.
@@ninadukette3340 Both places should be on everybody’s Italian Itinerary. The only problem was that it’s a little out of the way but really worth the time and effort to see. The manager at our hotel in Sorrento could not believe we went there. Paestum also has great restaurants and shops.
We went to Italy for 16 days and spent the last 5 nights in Positano but we were there late October and it hit 80 which we weren’t expecting. Staying during shoulder season was great! Way less crowded and our hotel prices were less. There were a few restaurants that were closed but not many.
Water taxi is great for the Amalfi coast. Even with a car, it is best. You are at the water, not walking down from parking somewhere, if that is even possible.
How is the weather during last week of November ..? I am planning Rome, Pisa, Florence and Venice during last week of November to first week of December. Needed your suggestion on the weather, if it's ok to visit Amalfi during late November.
driving the coast is challenging , prices are not cheap , stay in naples or somewhere else, then day trip to amalfi coast , ferry from sorrento > positano doesnt go at night only day
I see all these videos and i have to ask... for someone who has to travel in a wheelchair, what countries outside of the U.S. are the most handicap accessible?
If you want a mega cheap version go to broadstairs Kent its stunningly beautiful looks like mini positano theres even Italian restaurants lol and the sand is golden not grey beach, its is free :)
Bud, your videos are all very good thank you. This is one of the places i want to go. Now question is the small roads the same as Greece's small roads when theres not enough room one side with the least amount of cars have to back up and let the larger line through. Also can you take the ferry in and just get a cab or whatever at night back
I am going to the Amalfi coast in September and after seeing more videos like this, I'm contemplating hiring a driver for the day instead of taking the bus. Does anyone have any advice on how to go about hiring one?
If you’ve ever driven on Highway 1 down the California coast through Big Sur, then you can probably drive on the Almafi coast. Two of the most beautiful coastlines in the world and two of the most treacherous to drive. Personally not for me.
That's kind of hard to answer without knowing where you're going on your trip. Naples is the furthest south major airport. So if you want to visit Puglia, Basilicata, Calabria, and maybe even Abruzzo, then Naples is your best bet. Milan gives you the easiest access to Piedmont, Liguria, and Lombardy. Rome gets you close to Tuscany, Laiza, Abruzzo, and Umbria. Now, you choose where you're going and choose one of those airports.
The cheapest airport will depend on where you're flying in from. I personally use Kayak's explore section set to where I'm flying in from to see what's cheap.
Best thing to do is rent a scooter in Sorrento and ride it all throughout the Amalfi Coast. Don't pass up a gas station because it could be miles before the next one. Another way is catch the boat/ferry to each towns and Capri and to Naples for pizza
How far in advance should you try to book dinner reservations? We are heading there in mid-September for our honeymoon and I’m wondering if calling day of is appropriate or should I try to book before we leave? Thanks so much for the insight!
We stayed in Praiano on our honeymoon, and it was beautiful! Also, if you’re a pretty active person, maybe hike up Vesuvius while in Pompeii. It was hard, but the view/experience was worth it!!
Don’t fall asleep on the ferry or a bus. My expensive camera was swiped right off my neck on ferry to Capri. I didn’t feel in danger while there but obviously got ripped off!

Melhor cidade pra se instalar por dias é Agerola, no topo do morro entre Amalfi e Positano, muito pra se ver por lá
The amalfi coast is beautiful!
Really cool info, thanks indeed, and supernice of you❤
Thanks so much🎉😊
Hey Mark, awesome video
Very helpful advice
Yes i went to Pompey it was amazing
This is great video and thanks for sharing the tips. Do you think 5 days are enough to explore Amalfi Coast? Day-1: Capri, Day-2: Positano, Day-3 Positano Day-4: Boat tour of Amalfi Coast, Day-5: Amalfi, Ravello, Atrani. We are travelling with 2 small kids age 2 and 5. Please advise.
Thank you so much.
When I was in the Amalfi Coast we stayed in awesome Minori. Not that touristy and incredibly beautiful
Yes, I agree. I've stayed there years ago loved it!!!
@@magicspider76 The Amalfi Coast rules!
Hello Mark, Another great videos. Paestum is kind of a distance from Napoli but we’ll worth the time and money investment. Also this little gem is not on everyone’s itinerary so you might get a break from the summer herds. Greek ruins in Italy, what a concept.
Not a strange concept. 😁 'Magna Graecia' (Megálē Hellás) was for centuries the real Greece. It went from Sicily to Naples (more or less).
Paestum better than Pompeii. No crowds. We watched two young women sifting through dirt for artifacts. Real-time stuff.
Glad I read this, we are going mid/late October this year, was wondering what the weather would be like, hoping we are lucky!
U r great ,so helpful
Just been there 3 weeks ago , amazing 🥰
Very helpful
Water taxi is great for the Amalfi coast. Even with a car, it is best. You are at the water, not walking down from parking somewhere, if that is even possible.
Excellent tips.
How is the weather during last week of November ..? I am planning Rome, Pisa, Florence and Venice during last week of November to first week of December. Needed your suggestion on the weather, if it's ok to visit Amalfi during late November.
There isn’t any parking and if you do use public parking, it’s 12 Euro an hour. I went in early June, it was beautiful.
Super helpful info. Great video. Thank you !
Cheers am going next March
Great tips
Good info. Do you have any advice about taking boat tours down the coast?
driving the coast is challenging , prices are not cheap , stay in naples or somewhere else, then day trip to amalfi coast , ferry from sorrento > positano doesnt go at night only day
Hey I'm coming for Christmas. You think that'll be ok climate and weather wise? Thanks 👍
I saw on luggage only instagram you can take trains too to those towns.
Great tips!
Thinking it might be best just to stay in one location, like Positano, and hire a guide to take us on day trips?
Hi, Wolter! Can you suggest a company or people who can be hired as guide when visiting the Amalfi Coast?
I see all these videos and i have to ask... for someone who has to travel in a wheelchair, what countries outside of the U.S. are the most handicap accessible?
If you want a mega cheap version go to broadstairs Kent its stunningly beautiful looks like mini positano theres even Italian restaurants lol and the sand is golden not grey beach, its is free :)
Broadstairs Kent ?
Bud, your videos are all very good thank you. This is one of the places i want to go. Now question is the small roads the same as Greece's small roads when theres not enough room one side with the least amount of cars have to back up and let the larger line through. Also can you take the ferry in and just get a cab or whatever at night back
Facts!
Just spent 2 months in southern Italy. My advice is to skip the coast and head to capri or taormina instead.
I am going to the Amalfi coast in September and after seeing more videos like this, I'm contemplating hiring a driver for the day instead of taking the bus. Does anyone have any advice on how to go about hiring one?
Luckily I hate travelling during summer months. I want to travel only when it's as cold as possible.
If you’ve ever driven on Highway 1 down the California coast through Big Sur, then you can probably drive on the Almafi coast. Two of the most beautiful coastlines in the world and two of the most treacherous to drive. Personally not for me.
The two don’t compare
Why? They are both twisty coastal roads that are not recommended for nervous drivers. @@claudiomarangone614
Highway 1 is pretty big and open though, not as narrow as the amalfi coast.
@@Metaltherebel92 At some spots, yes, you are correct. At others though, it can be a real nailbiter.
Asmara to Massawa on the Red Sea in Eritrea… it’s crazy and scary!!!!
Still the worse I’ve ever seen!!!
Hello Walter!
Can I ask what is the best and cheapest airport going to Italy 🇮🇹 as a first timer?
Thank you for all awesome videos, big help for me 😊
That's kind of hard to answer without knowing where you're going on your trip.
Does it take long to drive in a scooter from town to town?
@@julianacarranza9926, the towns aren’t far apart from what I remember. Great way to get around
How to visit this place with knee problems if you need to take all those stairs 😅😅?
How far in advance should you try to book dinner reservations? We are heading there in mid-September for our honeymoon and I’m wondering if calling day of is appropriate or should I try to book before we leave? Thanks so much for the insight!
At least 2 weeks!
Thanks a bunch - we actually got home on the 22nd but had a phenomenal time! @@oranathlertwongrath5910
Positano accommodation is very expensive indeed.
We dove our rented call from Rome Prainio was great but we didn’t touch our car for the whole week

Hey, can anyone recommend a good and affordable photographer for couple’s photoshoot in late march. My husband and myself will be there for 3 days. Any leads would be appreciated
Why take the bus when you can take a boat from sorrento and go to Positano 3:21 and Grotto Esmeralda etc
