Thanks Jocelyn and Mark for your honest appraisal. It is so needed these days as Instagram etc has made everywhere look paradisiacal when obviously there are cracks in every tourist destination that need to be taken into account when visiting. Bravo to you both ☺️✨🌷.
That is really nice of you. Thank you. Yes, ive tried to put out more videos on more channels to help combat the horrible tracel advice ive been seeing online lately. Travel hug to you from jocelyn and myself
I've been to Sorrento no less than 12 times and I NEVER had a bad experience anywhere CLOSE to what is being portrayed here!
There are plenty of wonderful restaurants, Azz! being my favorite, and the options for lodging are incredible!
I've never spent more than 80€ euros per person for VERY nice places WITH breakfast!
And it is the single best location to stay for a week or more and be able to experience everything the Bay of Naples has to offer!
This makes me so sad. We visited Italy for the first time last May, spent three days in Rome and about 10 days in Sorrento. We couldn’t have loved Sorrento more. We explored Sorrento over several days (saw The Three Tenors, took a wonderful cooking class with Carmen, etc.), in addition to eating pizza (twice in one day) in Naples, taking a boat ride to Capri, hiring a driver (who became a friend) to take us to Amalfi, Positano and Ravello, taking the train to Pompeii, walking to the top of Mount Vesuvius and many other memorable experiences. We couldn’t have loved Sorrento more. The local people were friendlier and kinder than anywhere we’ve been (and we’re from the Deep South of the U.S.), the views were amazing, the history was plentiful, and the FOOD (including lemon-everything and the best olive oil imaginable, in addition to all the tomato-based dishes) was out of this world. We hope to go back again and again. It’s even on a short list of places we would move to. I have enjoyed watching many of your videos on RUclips and appreciate the work you put into them and the information you deliver. However, your description of Sorrento (based on your real but unfortunate experiences) doesn’t resemble our family’s experience at all. I hope that anyone who was turned off of visiting Sorrento based on this video will do their own due diligence and give it a try.
I think American hospitality standards are just really, really high. We went to Italy multiple times, simple, non-luxurious hotels or B&B but clean, and we were perfectly fine with it.
what was the best way to get around? we booked tours in October leaving from the sorrento port/marina but from our airbnb it'll take over 30mins to train ride. would you suggest taking the taxi? can you give me more input about that?
Stay with the Nuns at La Culla. Also the train to take is the Campania express.
Not being funny the views are staggering.
Beautiful thanks for the tips❤
I loved Sorrento there was 8 of us and no matter where we went they were always accommodating we all feel I love with it. We did the almafi coast Capri loved it all. We went back to Italy and chose lake Como stayed in Bellagio and the people down in Almafi were much nicer and accommodating. We are going back 9-25
You have the best videos! I’ve been watching your videos for a couple of years and find them very helpful! I was glad to stumble across this one as I will be traveling to Italy in October 2024. I’ve only been to Italy, Rome, once. We are planning on being in Italy for 12 days. We’ll definitely be visiting Rome for 3 or 4 days; however, we’re undecided on another location to spend the remainder of our trip. My spouse and I are outdoors and beach type of people. We prefer the hiking in the countryside opposed to a big city. We like museums but they aren’t at the top of our list on ways to spend the day. We are undecided on one of the following three locations: 1) Sicily, 2) Naples/Sorrento/Amalfi Coast, 3) Florence/Naples. We are also big foodies, local not touristy. Any help on making this decision will be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
Mark's wife here, imo if you like hiking the Sorrento/Amalfi option is probably best of those...we hiked to Anacapri one year, it was great. But also, look into Cinque Terre and see if that may fit y'all well. We obviously have vids on all those locations. There's also good hiking/walks in Tuscany.
Sicily will be less art and architecture. I would probably do the amalfi one. Though look at puglia as an alternative maybe for another italy trip
Have a fantastic trip! That is so exciting! SanRemo Italy is beautiful. We never stay in the mainstream areas. Always go down the off beaten path. Just a personal preference. This channel is the best channel ever hands down.
I highly suggest staying at Hotel Ulisse; affordable, close to everything, and wonderful service and personnel.
Why the circum line over the met line from naples? Met seems much better 🤷♂️
I booked an Uber and don't forget to negotiate
I love Sorrento. I've been twice and both times the hotel was great! It's a great place to base your adventures from Naples to Amalfi. The little railroad makes it very easy to visit the ancient Roman sites and Naples. You have your choice of ways to visit the Amalfi coast. And for all it's touristy qualities, Sorrento is still beautiful.
Guys, go to Sant' Agnello instead. It is less touristy and is only a 15 minute walk/ 5 minute train/bus/car ride away from Sorrento. It also has the rail to Naples, Herculanium and Pompei. PS. Don't take the train from Naples to Sorrento when coming from the airport, instead there is a Curreri Viaggi bus directly from the airport. It is only 10 euros a person each way.
On Ana Capri find the drink stand that serves a lemon slush with fresh squeezed blood orange juice on top. Fantastic!
So good!!
@woltersworld Been to Sorrento and Capri twice. I should have added two other tips.
For 2 couples we used Sorrento First Choice driver for a private day long trip to Amalfi, Ravello and Positano and highly recommend them. Also, down close to the boats on Capri, there is a small grocery deli, and they made us fantastic sandwiches.
@@larrydalton2205 nice!
Wow! That sounds like it's got our names written all over it. Added to our "must do" list. Thanks!
Took a bus from Napoli airport to Sorrento for about 30 euros. It was great. Picked it up at the airport. Didn’t have to go to the train station.
Thank you so much - I am literally about to go to Sorrento and was searching your channel and then this new vid popped up. Fantastic tips as always!!
Glad we could sync up in time 😀 have fun!
I REALLY enjoyed this video too.
We based out of Salerno (much more Italian) and went up and down from there and home from Naples, however the bin workers were on strike in Naples again 😮
Aren't they always on strike? They were on strike on both of our visit's!
I loved Sorrento when I visited there. Definitely try the Limoncello there!
It's so good!
Capri is the home of the legendary beverage "Capri Sun" or the amazing automovil Caprice Classic
I love this comment 😀
Im still laughing at this one. Even shared with jocelyn and she is cracking up too
Love Sorrento! I had a great place to stay at Villagio Verde. I had a little bungalow with a kitchenette and a private patio. It wasn't fancy, but the staff were great, and the poolside bar was reasonably priced. I took the bus from Naples to Sorrento because it was cheap and I was too late for the last ferry. Loved the video!
I love your videos and watch them since years. But somestimes I would wish to keep environmental aspects in mind. It's not great to fly from A to B for short distances just because it is cheap. Or to eat tuna or swordfish... that is so bad actually.
That’s not our experience when we stayed in Sorrento. We truly enjoyed our hotel stay in Sorrento and all the restaurants we went to were amazing.
Thank you! I agree, as I've been there many times and keep going back. There's more room than Positano and Amalfi and you can see them on day trips anyway
We took a tour with Perillo. They did a great job and all those problems were taken care of for you. It is expensive but well worth it. My suggestion for going to Capri is to take Bonine or Dramamine, I got sick on the ferry. What a fabulous trip though. Everyone should go to these places.
Sorry, that is partly BS...been there 3 times. Parking in Sorrento is no issue, and we have a big car. Directly next to beginning of the downtown area. Compare to other Tourist attraction Cities it is fine, but no comparison to Capri for example...I would never pic a Place to stay where I have the tiniest doubt about cleanliness - yeah its going to be more expensive - they know the Americans will pay for it... ;-)
This is the most informative video I’ve seen for navigating Sorrento/Capri 👏🏼 thank you!!
That is really nice of you. Thank you!
Going to maple cruise at the of October. Where can you find such place not so many tourists?
Not sure about all that tourist treatment statement he mentioned. We went to Sorrento in May 2024 and our AB&B was great and the hosts were very nice and attentive. Do your research and read reviews is my advice. All restaurants staffs were super welcoming and attentive too. And friendly. We had a great time and food was so much chipper and delicious than in the east side of the USA.
Waste of time. This guy could’ve said it all in two minutes. Could he be a chronic complainer?
My dad is from Sorrento and we often spent our summers there during the 70s and 80s, staying at my grandmother's apartment literally across the road from Marina Grande. It was a proper beach back then. We were sometimes there for the festival of St Anna, which from memory takes place in August. I haven't been there since 2007, but even then it had changed so much since my childhood. It's a beautiful part of the world and well worth a visit. Important to remember when visiting churches that shoulders and legs need to be covered.
Thanks for the great tips. Your videos are wonderful.
We are going there in 4 weeks (trip actually starts in 2 from Barcelona then Greece) and we can't wait. Lots of walking for these lazy Californians, but Greece would have prepped us for Amalfi. That's one thing most people don't plan for: the exercise of walking for hours, up and down stairs and cliffs. It's part of the experience. 😂
We’ve stayed at Hotel Del Mare twice, lovely little hotel. And love Sorrento.
From Naples you can go also with the ferry to Sorrento. We used the ferry a lot.
Just got back from Italy and Athens 3 weeks go (April 2024). We love Sorrento. Wish we could stay longer. Love the seafood antipasto, their wine/beer and dessert! ❤
Rubbish my friend been going there since 1967
“Been going there” AKA “touring” 😂
Don't agree with you about Naples, People were super nice to us and friendly that when we continued to Rome it felt like something missed in Rome
Hey Mark, awesome video
Thanks Tobi
💙🕊️🕊️💙 I really really enjoyed this video! I always watch on my TV and never come on my phone to comment. This time I had to comment. It was really enjoyable. Was hoping you'd have a video on your eats channel but, I guess you covered it in this video. BTW... when I came on here, I noticed I was unsubscribed. I did not do that. It's happened before on your channel. I did re-subscribe. I watch ALL your videos on TV.
It was a few years back, but I got a great deal on excursions at the shop next to the rail station, their card reader never worked so take cash, also if going to Capri get your cash before you go, i struggled to find an ATM that worked with UK banks
We based in Meta which was a couple miles from Sorrento on the Circumvesuviana train route. Stayed there for a month. Much cheaper than Sorrento and the rental was wonderful .
What’s up with Naples? Genuinely curious.
Thanks for this - it sounds like hell on earth and I'll avoid it and go to less regarded parts of Italy.
you're awesome. Thank you!
I loved riding my motorcycle all over the Amalfi coast. Never any issues with getting through traffic.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Great video! I can't wait to go back. 🇮🇹 ❤
Thanks!
We just returned from sorrento..stayed a week in the conca park hotel.. absolutely fantastic hotel.. highly recommend..only a simple five minute walk from the front of the hotel across the road and sweep round to the right and your in the main piazza with all the shops restaurants etc ..only ten minute walk down to the grande marina beach and next to bus stops for positano and amalfi coast tours etc..bus tickets you can buy in any newsagent or tabbaci shop for a couple of euro...sorrento is absolutely heaven on earth and we would quite happily live here ...the best cocktail mocktail place is called D'anton .. very reasonable prices and atmosphere of the place is to die for...has to be experienced... people are very helpful and respectful and yes we did meet a few rude ones but thats anywhere you go ..couldnt praise or recommend this place more...explore every side street off the main square ... fabulous food and shops etc to die for...
I am Italian from Naples and live in England but what you are telling people is not accurate and is not fair. The main one being how to get to Sorrento from Naples. Unless you are on a budget no Tourist would dream of going to Sorrento on the Circumvesuvian train whoich os for locals and does not allow big suitecase like a tourist would have. And please get it right how you say Napli Centrale. Foir you Americans its chay tra lay ,
Thank you for lots of great tips and advice. Are packing for a gew weeks traveling in Italy now, and theese videos definitely made me prioritize different than my original plans. 😁👌
I just booked The Hilton Sorrento! Do you have any private drivers that you can recommend? Or anyone here can send me some info on a driver to pick us up from Naples airport to sorrento RT? It’s soooo expensive lol
Thank you Mark. Our family is flying to Italy during July, and will be traveling to Sorrento (down from Milan-Florence-Rome) via car.
As we plan on keeping the car parked at the hotel during our stay in the area, who should we contact in order to hire a local driver along the Amalfi coast?
In late April by 3PM the supermarkets are bare empty of most food. And the lines to take a bus and ferry were way too long. Lets not even talk about the Vesuviano train which broek twice during my week there. Never seen a place more overrun by tourist than this. Still such a beautiful place to visit.
Is there some free places for swimming and go to sea, like beaches but totally free and maybe local?
I know it's touristy but i love Sorrento haha. The views across the bay to the volcano are just insane and why I'd always prefer it over Amalfi
We stayed at the single most amazing hotel in Sorrento: La Favorita. Would go back in a heartbeat
Love Sorrento , me and my wife spent 5 days nearby ,,, visited the isle of Capri and did a boat trip of the Amalfi Coast ,, gorgeous place , just wish had double the amount of time we had
The Blue Grotto was not a pleasant experience. Would not do again. Sorrento was fun.
Can you say why/ more please?
@@allyson1691 You have to wait in line an hour in an area with blazing sun. You have to lay down in the boat and are in and out so quickly and hardly see anything. Even one of my guide books said it is a tourist trap. Everything else in Italy was amazing.
@@groove9tube thank you for sharing that
We are planning to rent a car from Rome and visit Capri. Do you know if we can park in Sorrento somewhere and take the ferry to Capri and stay there? Is parking expensive?
Sorrento looks great! I've been to Italy several times but never been there. I have a lot of reasons to go back. And never come home. :) Limoncello is soooo good. And negroni. Italy is amazing. Basta.
Who is editing these? Jarring jump cuts you'd usually see on a tiktok or teenager's video.
When I see this amount of Corona masks, I'm already fed up with all this 😞
You should call it "The Barf Bus" instead of vomit bus.
Wow, just when I am about to embark on another journey, another incredible video of yours pops up! This will be my 6th adventure with your advice! Thank you for all of the information!
whats your thoughts on having neaples as base going out from visiting the coast and capri
Soooo, you have the Carabinieri driving you around? Wow...
Life in italy isn’t suitable for cynics… respectfully 😘
Can you make a video on Don’ts of Vietnam please?
I love Sorrento!!! I had gnocchi for the first time ever when I was there and it was sooo good!! I went to Pompeii twice and it just wasn’t enough time to see everything. Great video!!!
So good! I agree! Yummy!
Not sure if you're into cooking but, it's the easiest dish to make.
@bluebutterfly7233 I’m actually making gnocchi bolognese for dinner tonight 😁. I still don’t think mine holds a candle to what I was served in Sorrento but it’s still pretty good!
@@FineBreezy5 oh my goodness! To funny. Hahaha Yes our home cooked meals are delicious but, rarely holds a candle to real Italian dishes. I get it. I think the ambience in Italy makes a difference too. Enjoy your dinner!
Hey Mark. When walking down the streets of Venice or the squares or walking around in Rome, can you smoke a cigar? I know you can't indoors but I mean just walking around ouside. Thank you
It’s going to be very crowded and you won’t feel comfortable with a cigar. Heck you’ll probably want to light one up after you get out of the crowds just to destress :)
I'm allergic to lemon 🍋 😒
Caprese cake is the BEST!
Can you get Lemon Crepes in Sorrento?

Skipping Sorrento.
Well cheers for that. I WAS looking forward to going to Sorrento. Now, not so much.
Sorrento is a wonderful place, it's definitely worth going...he said he's been 4 times ?
DON'T, DON'T, DON'T, DON'T, DON'T, DON'T...........
Did you read the title lmao

What is the best way from getting to Pompei from Sorrento?
From Sorrento take the "Circumvesuviana" train to Naples, and get off at the "Pompei-Scavi" stop
Nice
Literally wouldn't go even if half these things are true.
Well, i think more than half are true or else I wouldnt have said them
We've been there a lot and it's all true in our experience. So...
Does it ever snow in Sorrento? 🤔
Never
Happy St. Patrick's Day to Mark and family today! 🍀
Thanks Josh! You too!
@@woltersworldNo problem and thank you!! 😁
Number 1. Don't get black out drunk and pee on someone's front door. Found our the hard way 😅 Italians might be small but they're strong I'll tell ya that
Air B&B is no longer something I'd even consider. It jumped the shark long ago.
Well two minutes into your vlog I have cancelled going to Sorrento. It sounds horrendous. ‘Get doing the blue grotto over with first’, I won’t go at all.
Love Italy, disagree a little bit on the driving part, if you're an experienced driver, you can easily drive there beautiful view, yes you need to focus on the driving part, maybe because where I'm originally from we have roads like that. We drove from Rome to Sorrento and then went to Luca, Florence, Pisa and Naples. Naples was the only place I felt unsafe during our 10-day Italy trip. Can't wait to go back.
Stayed in the hotel Caravelle with a beautiful view of Mount Vesuvius.
I've been going back and forth about staying in Naples or Sorrento. I want Naples because of the museum and underground experience. I've heard Naples is pretty crime area though so leaning more towards Sorrento.
Naples isn't ever on my list of places to stay for more than a few hours. Grab pizza, see museum, get out.
Napoli is the best city in the world ! Best Pizza , Best Metro , Best Museums and much more Italian than any Italian city i went to , Just because this city is not for tourists it doesn't mean Naples has no charm and beauty!
