I don't think he was rated highly as a player and everyone knew he was good, not great. It was his phenomenal skills that made him so popular and such a drawcard. He may not be the most efficient or have the best numbers, but man, he was a pleasure to watch.

As a heat fan I will never forget him hitting 10 shots in a row in the 2006 ECF against Detroit to send us to the finals. An unbelievable performance. I do think he could have hit his potential if he had been with a team like Miami from the start. The structure of the organization would’ve matured his game much faster and made him more about substance then flash. The j-will Miami got was indeed the best version, but he was already declining physically.

This video is pure slander. I don’t even want to rank J Will against other players because no one was ever like J Will before or after him. • @williamdavis9562
      @williamdavis9562 Год назад

      He reached his max potential.
The reason he could never be a true star was because he had a terrible basketball IQ. Which back then was a kiss of death for point guards.
Skilled? Absolutely. Entertaining? One of the best ever.
But again his lack of IQ kept his potential ceiling very low. All the talent in the world can't overcome stupid.

Don't really agree with this video. Not sure Jay Will was ever that highly rated, I mean, sure the first few years in Sac he was for sure, but after he was traded from Sacramento he was really almost completely forgotten and he actually became quite underrated in Memphis and then as you pointed out in Miami. Overall I think the way he was remembered is more or less accurate to who he was as a player: a solid player who early on in Sacramento had a bunch of crazy highlights. No one thinks of him as an all time great PG or even one of the great PGs of his era imo.

Anyone claiming White Chocolate was overrated doesn’t know what they’re talking about. He played 12 years on 8 playoff teams, 7 as a starter & has a ring. Getting the kings to play high level basketball was no small feat, especially when Webber didn’t want to be there until he realized how much Divacs & Williams would help him. In Williams 3 years as a King they ranked #1 in ppg all 3 years & got better on D every year, ranking 13th in his final year as a King. After being traded for Bibby, they never ranked higher than 17th in D & also never ranked #1 in O ever again. His willingness to share the ball kept teammates alert & encouraged them to create TOs. If the kings would’ve traded Adelman instead of Williams, the kings would have a ring too.

Flashy, innovative, and has an edge that many other players don't have. As well as the fact that he is 6' or so is much more appealing to the general public.
Watching 7' guys do boring dunks, and average guards chucking up 10-15 3 pointers per game isn't very entertaining anymore. While I respect guys like Tim Duncan and Giannis, I don't think they are as entertaining to watch as guys like J Will. I don't think he was overrated.

Anyone who witnessed him at the time knows he wasn't a top 10 point guard in the league. He wasn't ever considered great by any stretch, he had great court vision, but extremely Immature at times, and very questionable decision making... he was perfect for the Kings, and perfect for the time... Right after Jordan retired, amid the new young highlight players of the early 00's (Vince, Kobe, T-Mac, Iverson, etc.)
Not sure I'd really call him a legend? But he was most certainly a fan favorite, and really fun to watch!
Him and Webber were iconic, and even though he toned down the flashiness, he and a young (and agile) Pau Gasol were just as fun a duo at times!
I think his influence is more imprinted in the basketball/streetball culture, more than any lasting legacy in the league. But J-Dub was my favorite player as a kid, and still a favorite of mine 20+ years later!

He was always considered like a mid tier PG, good at handling the ball and adequate scoring, and I think some people might have been over enamored with his really flashy handling skills and passes and stuff, but he was never considered in the same league as someone like a Jason Kidd for example. I think at his peak, Jason Williams could be seen as something of a poor man's Jason Kidd, but Kidd was better for a lot longer, he didn't take the risks that Williams did that you mention either. Also, Mike Bibby was a lot better than him as well, Bibby could shoot the lights out, wasn't much of a passer but overall a way more effective basketball player and a huge part of the Kings' success. When Bibby and Peja got hot from beyond the arc, they could just absolutely destroy your team in short order. Those Kings are the ones I remember a lot more than the Jason Williams era Kings.

      Agreed.
Jason Williams was A LOT more talented than Bibby. But Bibby had something Jason never had. A high IQ. Which made him the better point guard.

Jason’s passes were put on highlight reels.. You listen to teammates tell stories of him is great.. Shaq, Christie, divac, and especially Webber always said his passes were off the scale..The players who played with him said it was beyond fun and helped team bonds.. So in so many ways J will was a highly rated player and his influence has changes the whole league in many ways.. Ball handling today is way better than the old days and it fills arenas..

I would hardly say Williams was overrated. He was never a superstar. What he did to was help revive a franchise that had been horrible for years. And his creativity brought back the fun back with his passing skills. Although he would at times take stupid 3 pointers out of nowhere...he was a key part of the kings making it to the playoffs.

But still worth buying a ticket to see him play live even though your team would prob lose if they gave him major minutes. Great video!

Jason Williams was extremely skilled and he’s got a ring. He’s rated exactly where he belongs. Not a legend. Not even a hall of famer really, but he had more heart than anyone else when he was on the court. His style of playing is iconic
He’s not on Kobe level. He’s not even on AI level. But he is a one of a kind

  • @morganlee2806

Williams wasn't rated that highly in his own playing days, but as with a lot of players the revisionist history is strong. You throw out his NBA mixtapes to a bunch of young kids and before you know it the next generation is calling him the "illest white boy of all time".

I don't think anyone says he's an all time great, he's beloved because he represented a team, that had generally been bad and was accustomed to having high draft picks that were just total busts, swiftly become a playoff team and then a contender and remember that Sacramento was playing a style of basketball that was fun to watch at a time when almost every other team was mostly playing iso ball on offense and grinding it out defensively (which means being fairly conservative on offense in order to minimize transition opportunities).
