  • The 2008 Boston Celtics had one of the best seasons in NBA history, and they will never let you forget that. The Celtics were led by the big 3 of Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, and Kevin Garnett. In their first season together they would win 66 games posting the greatest single season turnaround in NBA history, and would go on to defeat Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Finals. Despite these accomplishments, this team has developed a reputation over the years. A team that views their singular championship as perhaps a greater achievement than it actually is. So why are the 2008 Boston so hated?

As a diehard Celtics fan I think the team gets overhyped mainly because it’s been so damn long since we’ve won last. For being a team tied with the most championships it’s really underwhelming to think we’ve only won once since the championship in 86.
08 was definitely an amazing team and with the overall culture in Boston I definitely enjoy the reunions but can see why people get annoyed too. You could argue the number reunions come from them all simply just really liking each other and wanting to see each other more often outside of the win. Though maybe other one off championship teams should take notes and have reunions too. Would be cool to see the older Mavs meet up sometime.
Fingers crossed the C’s now can pull us out of another championship drought though, but I wouldn’t be surprised if guys from the past couple iterations of the team these past few seasons try doing reunions as well. Can definitely see Smart coming back to chill in Boston with Tatum and Brown later down the road after retiring for example.

The 08 team was very good, but quite frankly wouldn’t be talked about as much if they didn’t annoy people as much as they do.

As a Miami native, that's a BS excuse. They say the same thing about us, but the truth is winning made Miami into a basketball city. Something Atlanta hasn't done.
Miami is a giant melting pot of a city. Arguably ground zero for immigrants who come here for a fresh start. As such, basketball is not always a predominant sport in many of those citizens' homeland. They come here and learn the culture. When the team is good, and winning, it's easier for them folks to acclimate and become fans. Once they do, they stick around.
So Atlanta's problem is not there is too much to do, it's that the team sucks, and nobody cares.

Let's not forget that horrible Game 2 in the 2008 Finals where Leon Powe was somehow awarded more FTA the entire Lakers team (13 for Powe, 10 for LA) and the Celtics had a 38 to 10 FTA advantage. Even the infamous Game 6 of the WCF wasn't that lopsided (25 to 40). I remember a play late when LA was making a comeback, Pierce was chasing Kobe and got hung up on a screen so he reached out and grabbed Kobe's right arm, who ended up putting up and making a shot with his left hand. This happened right in front of a referee,. No whistle.

I think the special thing about them is that they were the only Big Three that I can think of in recent memory where all three guys had been star players who kept falling short of a title, but getting together finally got them one. It’s how you think these things ideally SHOULD play out. When superteams are made up of one or more guys that have already won, it feels obnoxious, like stacking the deck so the rich get richer. But the fact that all three were in the latter half of their careers and had all failed to get there until they joined together makes it kind of cool to me. In that way, it’s also better that they didn’t win a bunch of times. So, they may not be a dynasty or whatnot, but there is something special about them.

Please stop with this dumb narrative, injuries happen all the time and to say that the Celtics would have beaten the Lakers that year in 09 100% with KG is stupid. That Lakers team was built to beat the Celtics that year. With Trevor Ariza healthy, Bynum healthy that year and winning 67 games they were not the same team in 08. Who was guarding Paul Pierce in 08? Vladimir Radmonovich, that’s a big difference from a young Ariza. And the Perkins getting hurt narrative doesn’t hold much water because he got hurt in game 6 not game 1, the Celtics had 5 games before than to beat the Lakers and they didn’t. And what bench player took Perks spot after getting hurt? Just a player named RASHEED WALLACE a player more than capable of getting offensive rebounds and rebounds in general, not to mention he gave you more offense with his outside shooting.

    @rumarspencer7302 2 месяца назад +2

Well guys, I think to me, the reason the Celtics of the Pierce-Garnett-Ray era didn't win another title was because of their age, they was able to beat my Lakers in 08, cause we didn't have Bynum clogging up the middle and a fully healthy Trevor Ariza, Bynum getting hurt allowed us to trade for Pau Gasol, Celtics likely still would've won cause of the 66 wins to our 57 wins, but not having a healthy Bynum and Ariza not being at full health revealed itself in the finals. The Celtics in 08-09, even if KG didn't get hurt, they weren't gone to repeat, my Lakers getting Bynum back healthy and Ariza back at full health, and Bynum and Gasol teaming up for the first time, that 09 Laker team was determined to get back to the finals and this time come back winning it all, they were ready to rebound from the previous year's loss, nothing was gone stop them, not the Celtics if Garnett didn't get hurt, we would've denied their repeat attempt, but injuries are a part of sports. In 2010 finals, Lakers dominated the Celtics on the offensive boards, and that included the Celtics having Perkins, but the Celtics in game 7, seem like they didn't miss Perk at all, they was up 13 in the third, Lakers cut it to 4 after 3 quarters, then Fisher hit a three, Kobe hit a jumper, it was back and forth, KG scored, Rasheed hit a three, Rondo hit a three to keep Boston close, but Metta hit the 3, Pau made the baseline pumpfake on 3 Celtics, Kobe had shooting struggles, but he did good in other areas, kept grabbing rebounds and getting to the line and hitting them, then Sasha hit key free throws to seal it, Rondo tried for the jumper and missed, Pau rebounds to Odom to Kobe all the way down to the court and Kobe puts up his index finger in celebration, Lakers came from 3-2 down to repeat as champions by beating the Celtics, and it's the first time the Celtics blew a 3-2 lead in the Finals, how fitting by their rivals after all the battles. And guys, it was Doc's championship in 08, Thibs helped no doubt, even Tony Allen always said he will listen to Thibs, but Doc is a good motivator and defense coach, he had his share of blown 3-2 leads and 3-1 leads as coach, trying to improve the defense now with the Bucks. Thibs himself after 3 head coaching stops, is still searching for his first nba title on his own, and first finals appearance. He so far has been to one Conference Finals as coach in 2011, won game 1 vs Heat big 3 first season together, before dropping 4 straight. Got a good Knicks squad, though dealing with injuries. Many of his players have always said he's worked him hard in practice, always his approach and reputation, which is nothing wrong with. I do have to say, you guys do sound like teenagers when yall talk.

To be fair, it was nearly impossible for the Cavs to lure elite free agents to Cleveland when lebron kept signing short term contracts. No one was trying to go to Cleveland unless he showed that he was committed long term. He never did that so they never came.

It's easy how at least one of the trades happened. Kevin McHale was with the T-Wolves at the time. He may have worked for the T-Wolves, but he will always bleed Celtics green. That's how KG landed with the Celtics. And I was for it because like any great player, KG deserved a chance to compete for an NBA title with an excellent core of teammates. KG was in basketball purgatory late in his career with the T-Wolves.

As a celtics fan who grew up during the mid 2000s thru 2010s, I can say that we milk tf out that ring. I wanna see us win another, but I cant stand going to the garden and seeing hella old celtic fans from '08 talking about that ring. I get it. We won, yay. Now lets move on. Just a Celtics fan talking here

Pierce called himself the best player in the world after winning in 2008. KG and Pierce still flaunting that title to this day isn’t surprising. Garnett was the anti Tim Duncan. He thought being loud would scare opponents but it only got him 1 ring that he had to team up with other superstars to get. He really overvalued himself. Same with Pierce.
They were a damn good team though but this was also a team that should have won more with that talent they had.

I'm a Celtics fan and when I think about our history I just think about the whole 17 banners not just the 2008 one. I don't fixate on this one championship and no one on the Celtics sub on reddit does either. The only reason it gets talked about a lot more than it should be is because a) 3 of the guys on that team was a top 10 player at their position in that time and it was the only ring they ever won and b) 3 of the guys on that team went on to become broadcasters where they got to talk about it so often. You don't hear Dirk or Chauncey Billups talking the livelong day about their one ring because they're "humble", they don't talk about it because they don't have the soapbox to circle back to it every two to three business days.

1:48 the sonics did not botch their pick by picking up Jeff Green. he was a good player considering the rest of what was available in that draft. put some respect on Jeff Green

the comment I was looking for lol. That draft is actually super weak in hindsight. Jeff Green one of the only players left from that draft class and one of the 3-4 players left that is still contributing

It's an interesting group. They were arguably the best team in the league for a three year period and had a very good shot to win all three chips from 08-10 if not for injuries. They also started the Big 3 trend which "broke" not really Lebron but the league itself as now the only way to be consistently good was to create your own big 3. They were probably a top 10 team since 2000 but definitely not all time

I never really got that, but I was pulling for em at the time to a point. But I think its the context around it that makes em feel so good about it all. Without that it's just whatever.

I think you forget that rondo was coming into his prime (averaging a near triple double) when the big 3 was aging so I feel like they still had another chance to topple the Heat but Ray decided to jump ship and the rest was history for them.
So I do believe if he didn’t do that they had a good chance to win a second
