My case: 1988 Michael Jordan. MVP, scoring title (averaging 35 points btw) [FG: 53%, FT: 84%], Steals leader (3.2), DPOY, All defensive first team, AllNBA first, All-Star Game MVP, led the Bulls to 50 wins (not a single all star teammate). Nearly a perfect season, his only flaw was that three point shot, but this wasn’t the three point era, and that never held him back from being the most dominant player in the league
I'm 69 years old and I didn't know I would get more sentimental the older I got. I sometimes get mad at myself, but I almost teared up, with the section on Bill Walton. It was a great tribute to Walton, who I believe would be in the, Greatest of all Time, conversation, if he could have stayed healthy.
Bill Walton is a special human being. His love for his fellow man and he don’t judge people by money. He judges people by character. And so full of love for his teammates and respect for everybody he played against. I miss this team so much. It’s all I do is watch 80’s Celtics games on RUclips. Only one I can’t find that I wanna see so bad is game one bucks at Celtics ecf.
I played against Larry Bird in 1986. True story. He came to a camp at our school in Kentucky and when he picked a few kids to come “guard” him I was lucky to be among those chosen. Supposedly he picked our school for our proximity to our world class crappie fishing at Kentucky Lake.
Yep, sounds about right. For all of his worldly experiences, Larry seems to be a simple man at heart. He sacrificed a lot of time honing his game so I’m sure he enjoys spending his free time doing what he loves. We should all do that more often.
@ Dave Whitehead You were given a once in a lifetime gift to have done that. I'd love just to meet him but to play against him? Wow!! He was my hero then and I realized his legendary greatness at the time. I tried to pattern my game to be like his. Never able to shoot like him but his fearless and tenacity and total team player were things I always tried to base my game on. He is still my hero today.
Dennis Johnson really doesn’t get enough respect as an all-time legend. Gus Williams and him brought Seattle a Larry O’Brien trophy (something the Jazz, Nuggets, Suns, etc. still can’t claim).
Everyone talks about the infamous Joe Barry Carroll for McHale and Parish trade as one of the most lopsided in league history (and it most definitely was). But no one ever brings up the fleecing that Boston inflicted on Phoenix in ‘83. Red Auerbach received a former Finals MVP, one of the greatest defensive point guards of all time and a future Hall of Famer, Dennis Johnson, in exchange for Rick Robey. Now, that’s criminal.
Like you I'm guessing, I bled Sonic green back in the Sonic Boom years. Loved me some Gus, JJ, Lonnie, Jack, Downtown, all of them. But DJ I think was the straw that stirred the drink, not just because he was Finals MVP in '79. He brought a championship dimension to the Sonics that was a little hard to define because it involved stuff like intangibles and went way beyond just the stat sheet. Defense, offensive rebounds, hustle plays, huge clutch shots and just overall team play from DJ is what gave the Sonics an edge against any team they played. When they traded him, they lost that edge that he brought, which is why they never got within sniffing distance of a title again. All DJ ever did was win, no matter where he went. And when he left, he always left losing in his wake. I think every season of his career except for maybe one year when he was with the Suns, his team made it at least as far as the conference finals, not counting his years with the post-championship Celtics when he was past his prime in the late '80s. There will never be another player quite like him.

Well ya convinced me dude. Then again I witnessed that team back in the 80s. As soon as they got Walton, I thought look out Lakers, they're coming back with a vengeance. Well they sure did, even if they only got two shots at the Lakers that year. They beat them twice, once without McHale, and at the Forum. The first meeting, Walton went nuts, blocking shots left and right., rebounding, dunking, leading the way to a lop sided win. He gave that team, for one year, arguably the best 6th man ever. Add in the rest of that crew, lead by Bird, and I can attest, it was special to watch.
Please make more anything. Making the cases, rants, analysis. Past present or future I will watch it all. You are one of the best things about youtube!
The 86 Celtics were what Pep Guardiola's Barca was in football and what prime Muhammad Ali was in boxing. Never has the game of basketball looked more beautiful.
@@GOPMAN71 If Sonny Liston ,and Henry Cooper couldn't succeed at knocking Ali out in his prime ,who by the way always had one of the greatest chins in boxing history ,his only stoppage was against Holmes when the corner through the towel , how was a psychologically fragile Tyson engaging against the greatest psychological mind playing master in boxing history going to knockout Ali .Tyson never defeated a in prime great opponent in his whole career ,never won a fight in which he was knocked down or was trailing after 6 rounds , benifetted by entering the heavyweight division at a time period in which no apex predators were present at the time to challenge him, when he encountered a stiff challenge he fail apart , particularly against a true Heavyweight Hof opponent ie Holyfield and Lewis . Spinks was a glorified heavyweight ,true hof credentials are at light heavy weight , who should have been ruled the loser inthe 2 Holmes bout ,so that Tyson win isn't authentic in terms of defeating a prime great heavyweight opponent . The 86 Celtics lacked the athleticism to matchup with the 87 Lakers ,and Kareem owned Parrish when he desired to impose his will , James Worthy's athletic ability would neutralize McHale defensive presence , Mychal Thompson , AC Green and Kurt Rambis through attrition would limit his effeciency offensively , Magic vs Dennis Johnson ?? Get real ,and I'm a Dennis Johnson fan ,but he's not winning that matchup . Cooper always gave Bird fits ,Byron Scott speed too much for Ainge , Wedman and Sichting , Bill Walton's pedigree passing ,interior defense ,good low post scoring via sweeping hook ,short 8 foot jumper would be minimized because he would have to run up and down the court so much he'd become tired , physically brittle he'd break down . Wes Mathew and and Billy Thompson bought additional athleticism off the bench .
Barcelona did not play beautifully under Guardiola. The incessant passing, sometimes going for minutes and minutes, on and on, just in order to tire an opponent out, is just plain boring to watch. The closest thing to it in basketball are the San Antonio Spurs of Gregg Popovich; however, I have a lot more respect for the Spurs than I do for the little Catalans.
I forgot how good Walton was at this point in his career. Near the end, but still dominating in stretches.. Hands down best frontline in NBA history-Bird, McHale, Parrish, Walton.
I remember when these games were originally televised that you HAD to watch the instant replay in slow motion to keep your eyes on the ball during some of the impossibly quick passes flying around the court. Main camera movements often got lost or faked out.
Thank you for this. I needed reassurance that my 10 year-old self, who watched the finals games against the Rockets on VHS tapes until each cassette was eaten by the VCR, was not being hyperbolic about his hero worship.

This is the second one I watched in this series with the 2001 Lakers being the first. I am telling friends about your content who love basketball. Great work man.
@@hirshja If you ask me, the Celtics would have won four more NBA titles. Meanwhile, the Lakers would bolster their roster, trading for Barkley, and possibly Ewing. Johnson also cuts out his swinger ways, doesn't get AIDS, plays until 1996. They battle the Lakers for titles. Bulls eventually land a discontented Olajuwon in a trade in 1993 - only then does Jodran win titles. What happens after 1998 is anyone's guess.
Had Bias lived, the Celtics would have won again in '87 with him playing for an injured McHale. Also, Bird says he would have retired in 1989 if Bias had lived.

Great video! This team played the most aesthetically beautiful NBA basketball I ever watched. You could hardly hate them mowing everyone down....because it was unstoppable and amazing....something that had yet to be encountered by the NBA. It was comparable in football terms to Dan Fouts and Joe Montana totally revamping what an NFL offense could do. There might have been better teams, but I never saw a team so superior to the rest of a league with HIGH QUALITY competition than this C's squad. They made so many Hall of Famers look ordinary or have some of their weakest professional performances. PS: I think you left out that this squad holds the all time home record (including playoffs) at 50-1....possibly unbeatable.
I posit that the 2001 Lakers would have taken both of those teams to game 7 at least. The 2001 Lakers are the very greatest team I'll ever watch. I wasn't around in the era of the Celtics , and I didn't even know about the NBA during the Bulls runs. But from all the tape and analytics I have studies, I can say that the playoff version of 2001 Lakers. The version that walked all over 4 X 50+ win teams, and had the hardest road to any championship by quality of total opponents, and STILL WENT 15-1 with that 1 loss being a close overtime affair vs Iverson. That version of the Lakers would beat anyone, or at least take them to a close nail biter game 7. I don't think the combo of Rodman, Scottie and Jordan alone could quite hold off MVP Shaq + 28 PPG Kobe with their support cast of defensive specialists and long range bombers like Fisher. The 2001 Lakers literally have an answer to everyone.

Great video from one of the best sports channels on RUclips. Other channels might do more with things like analytics and film breakdown, but I don't think I've seen a channel that's better at telling a story around basketball than yours.
Clayton congratuulation on 50.000 subscribles! Boo Ja man!
Your videos confuse me man..... Every time I watch your "making the case" videos, you convince me, only to watch another video and you convincing me again that another team is the greatest.... I am in the land of confusion 😂😂😂😂 that means your vids are soooo good you make a case for every team.

Clayton that intro man! Chill!! Good shit
I feel like Bill Simmons is gonna hire you at The Ringer eventually
Especially if he puts out more videos like this one!
Well ya convinced me dude. Then again I witnessed that team back in
the 80s. As soon as they got Walton, I thought look out Lakers, they're
coming back with a vengeance. Well they sure did, even if they only got
two shots at the Lakers that year. They beat them twice, once without
McHale, and at the Forum. The first meeting, Walton went nuts, blocking
shots left and right., rebounding, dunking, leading the way to a lop sided
win. He gave that team, for one year, arguably the best 6th man ever. Add
in the rest of that crew, lead by Bird, and I can attest, it was special to watch.
As a lifelong Laker fan, I have to say that K.C. Jones is the most criminally underrated coach of all time.
Please make more anything. Making the cases, rants, analysis. Past present or future I will watch it all. You are one of the best things about youtube!
I finally understand why this team is so great. Thanks Duncan!
BROOO! this is seriously one of the greatest web series. It is just beautiful content
This team was easily the best interior and post defensive team ever, even the best interior and post offensive team ever.
Only real competition is the bad boys pistons
@@thomasbrady3827 Gay boy Pistons lol
GREAT video! THe '86 Celtics were extraordinary on so many different levels - and extraordinarily FUN to watch!!
Another great video! As a die hard Celtic fan I couldn't agree more. It's too bad Len Bias past away. The Celtics dynasty could have continued.
Let's go Clayton! Lets go baby!
The 86 Celtics were what Pep Guardiola's Barca was in football and what prime Muhammad Ali was in boxing. Never has the game of basketball looked more beautiful.
Prime Tyson would knock prime Ali's big mouth out in 2 rounds tops, just like the 86 Celtics would've mopped the floor with the 87 Lakers or 96 Bulls.
Yeah they were the 1948 Invincibles of basketball.
@@GOPMAN71 Have you seen Ali's first Patterson fight? The peek a boo style of Tyson would've been easy to prime Ali.
Mr Crawley, we’re gonna need another making the case for the 2024 Celtics
I forgot how good Walton was at this point in his career. Near the end, but still dominating in stretches.. Hands down best frontline in NBA history-Bird, McHale, Parrish, Walton.
Awesome stuff again. I’ll definitely be spreading the word
McHale's post moves give me chills
I remember when these games were originally televised that you HAD to watch the instant replay in slow motion to keep your eyes on the ball during some of the impossibly quick passes flying around the court. Main camera movements often got lost or faked out.
To me the 86 Celtics was the most complete all around team ever, not to mention the best passing team ever!
Thank you for this.
I needed reassurance that my 10 year-old self, who watched the finals games against the Rockets on VHS tapes until each cassette was eaten by the VCR, was not being hyperbolic about his hero worship.
Bird was the best player I ever saw and this team was insane
Absolutely correct.
“The hive mind.” 🐝😄👍🏼
Another great video, Clayton. I’m trying to watch every one you’ve ever done. I also like how you catch your own errors and call them out. Nobody’s perfect, so there’s no shame in being imperfect.
I love these videos. You are doing a fantastic job. Articulate bordering on poetic and pretty darn funny here and there. Keep up the good work Clayton!
Excellent video! I was 16 and watched it all. ❤❤❤❤❤❤ the Celtics and Lakers of the 80s were the pinnacle of NBA basketball.❤
“ I don’t give a shit about Boston “ 😂 love your videos man
I finished your making the case players series and it was honestly some of the best content I have seen. The non bias you present backed up by facts data and logic are sound. This is the second one I watched in this series with the 2001 Lakers being the first. I am telling friends about your content who love basketball. Great work man.
And imagine if Bias lived. It would have been 60s all over again.
Easily a top 5 "what if" in modern sports history. He was supposedly around the same level as MJ.
Long story short, MJ would have lots of competition and won't dominate the 90s like he did in real life. He never wins a ring without Olajuwon.
Had Bias lived, the Celtics would have won again in '87 with him playing for an injured McHale.
Also, Bird says he would have retired in 1989 if Bias had lived.
@@daveverplank If Bird wasn't bluffing about retiring, I'm sure the Celtics would talk him into staying, showing him how many more rings he could win. McHale probably won't get injured, Bias would have eased the burden.
How does this guy not have millions of views? Some of these youngsters get the youtube bucks way too easily for not doing much, but this a deserving channel.

I remember hearing that Walton was deeply disappointed that the Lakers didn't make the finals in 86 because he wanted to play against Kareem.
I always look forward to your videos man!
This Made my day
This is def one of my favorite teams to go back and watch
I highly suggested a video of the 1966-1967 Philadelphia 76ers.
Still feel. Even today 67 sixers is one of the top two teams ever strong back court greer and Jones strong front court Jackson walker and legendary wilt Chamberlain
Hes not gonna do teams b4 1970. Speaking of 6ers, i think 82-83 76ers should make the list.
@@mikegillins4992 they are.
@@akashkarthikeyan7765 I think that 83 sixers team is in the top five convo
@@Amick44 even thou I like 86 celtics as best team I always said the 67 sixers is the one team that would have a legitimate shot against them cause of there strong front court and Chamberlain scoring, rebounding, passing and shot blocking ability
I still remember that third quarter against Atl. In Boston’s 5th game the bar was going crazy!
how about making a case series on 'Best Robin' (as in 2nd option to a batman) or most underrated player?
I was gonna say David Robinson before I read all of it
For a a bunch of seasons is scottie pipen for a single season is Kobe 2001
Best Robin is a great question. I'm sure someone will suggest Pip or Kobe, but those two were Batman and their teammates were Superman.
@@Suporchin Sure but pip was always a batman, whereas kobe had played superman for his team, for long stretches of his career.
I’m glad that these videos spaced out and probably planned, these are more polished then the individual GOAT videos.
My favorite was the Celtics in the 1950s Cousy, Heinsohn, Russell, KC Jones, coach Red Auerbach.
Dang, you must be pretty old Madelyn.
40-1 win/loss record at home. Enough said! PERIOD!
the playoffs count the most
the best playoff teams ever are the first 10 celtics championship teams and the 1967 76ers led by the goats tied bill russell and wilt chamberlain
50-1 if you include the playoffs, that's insane!
@@TheBrett04I would be willing to bet that they still get irritated they lost to the trail blazers at home
Excellent video.
This team and the ‘96 Bulls are my 1-2.... and I go back and forth on the order.
I was so glad that Walton went to the Celtic. Loved the way he played for UCLA, Like Bird, Smarts plays.
